Apps for 2 Year Old - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi There!
I am looking for some apps my 2 year old might enjoy playing with very occasionally? Something with BIG bright colours etc..

Play to him Tom & Jerry episodes. You can not miss with this

My daughter's favorites are kidpaint and five little monkeys

I use Kid mode for my 19 month and 4yr old.

I found a heap of the old Dr Suess books, I believe I paid for them on he market but they read the story to the child, my nephew, and allow you to point at pictures in the story. It tells you what they are and spells them out. At 1, this isn't important, but the noise and pictures seem to be engrossing to him....

My son loves Talking Tom
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.outfit7.talkingtom&feature=search_result

check all the apps-games from this link , its really glowing
https://market.android.com/search?q=glow+hockey&so=1&c=apps

My 2 and 3 year olds love nearly all these apps, get the hd versions for the tab, https://market.android.com/search?q=Intellijoy&so=1&c=apps
Also recommend the little critter books on the market, excellent value for the quality.

Kid Mode is great.
It's already a compilation of a lot of activity that my 2 year old enjoys.

i wanted to feel that way, but was disappointed by the console version. graphics not that great, too many glitches. Horrible enemy AI in single player
i'm personally loving bf3.
i'm waiting to see what people say about mw3. i felt really burned after all the glitching and hacking in mw2 and with infinity ward gone i'm still not quite sure if that's a good or bad thing.

agreed. they say MW3 is supposed to be much more balanced than mw2. If its a mix between the graphics of mw2 and gameplay of black ops, ill be in heaven.
i only play hardcore modes though, not that run and gun **** of regular modes. alot more skill involved with hardcore
i was honestly set on bf3. Until i realized that all of the videos were from the pc version and not the console version. ive read hundreds of reviews on it, many from bf2 players, and ive decided to get mw3 instead
I can't decide between mw3 and battlefield
Battlefield is fun, but I've always been more of a CoD fan. I got BF3 and I will be getting MW3 tomorrow. Then, Skyrim on Friday. Sucks because I'll be at work all night while Skyrim waits on my doorstep.
Had the game for the past 4 days. Haven't played much. F U work. Mw3 is a improvement. Much better game. Bf3 is sluggish, I have bf3 btw

Point of minecraft?

I hear alot about this game/thing... Whats the point of it? It looks like something that you building insanely pixelated. aated cities, lands etc... Just dont get it. There has to be more. What am I missing? I read there were like 200 million copies sold. And few million on phones

Just try to play and you'll understand...
It's super addictive.
It's just basically making stuff and downloading other peoples levels they made that you have to do and like the other answer you got it is rather addictive!
Well, you're also missing stuff like crafting and survival. Depends on what difficulty you choose. Try for yourself.
I was wondering the same thing, because a bunch of guys I know love it. I tried it myself and I was bored within about 10 minutes. It's either you build something which isn't very impressive, or you sacrifice endless hours to make something awesome. But at the end of the day you don't really get anything for doing it... So I see no point either

Right now it's the pseudo equivalent of creative mode only. In creative mode, there are no monsters, infinite resources, and your character can't die.
Survival mode is really what brings out the flavor in minecraft, if for no better reason than you have to "earn" what you build by harvesting everything and *not* dying.
Initially the dev team (Mojang) wanted the pocket edition to be like creative mode only. Now apparantly they're giving it some survival mode teeth, as that's what the community has been clamoring for.
Here's to hoping there wont be too many corners cut. If so, I may have to hunker down and actually buy this one.
There is a free demo version for anyone who's curious. The demo version doesn't let you save your worlds, so whatever you build is gone when you close thr game.

i simply find it grotesque, i can't fathom the ugliness of such game
it's like worse than going back to the computers from the 70s, just with color instead of monochrome
i still remember Atari games that looked exactly just like that

Game Boy on Nook

I use GBC A.D. with NoRefresh which made it possible to play any game normally.
Playing Kirby is a bit difficult with things constantly attacking. Pokemon on the other hand is easy to navigate with some practice. I don't need the sound, I'd rather hear real music anyway
I want to try Beavis and Butthead for Sega Genesis on it next. Sadly, the sounds are half the fun in that game and they will be missed while playing.

Here's a video of it with the NoRefresh turned on. I played 2 games, Pokemon and Kirby. I played up until that point only using the nook. When I'm not too lazy, I'll beat the game on it! It's at around 2:00 minutes for the first game. The ghosting is part of the experience playing it on an ereader. It doesn't seem to bother me :good:
x11?
what is that X11 thing you run in the video?
Wow great video! Pokemon ran great with norefresh hack. Thanks for the awesome video.

It's not running X11, it's Mini vMac, emulating old Macintosh software. I'm getting pretty far in Pokemon (when I have spare time) I chose the yellow version because I won't be allowed to dupe items. I always cheat in red or blue, ruining the fun!
Hehe I saw your video with the mini vmac. I was surprised it works quite well on ereaders. I'm running it on my Sony Reader xD thanks for posting the vid. Brings back memories.

If you enjoyed the stealth aspect of MGS4 you'll probably like Deus Ex Human Revolution.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma. It's a greatest hit now so it should only be $20 brand new.
God of War III. Definitely worth at least one playthrough.
One of the new versions of Street Fighter.
Dead Space 1&2
Uncharted, all of them. They're the only games that really push your console to its boundaries, and show what it can do. Of course they are good games otherwise too.
If you like racing games, then I recommend Gran Turismo 5, it's a great driving simulator with a LOT of stuff. Car info and prices are quite realistic, and so is the driving itself.
Also, if you care for arcade style race more, the check out Need for Speed Shift 1 and 2. They're also pretty good, just different.

Same here, Uncharted No question. I saw the preview for Uncharted 3, then looked up 2, then grabbed 2, After I read the reviews, I picked up the first one. Played all 3 in order. OMG I would of gotten a PS3 just for that series. There is nothing like it on the 360 (and I am a much bigger 360 fan than PS3)
Check out the preview for "The last of us", from the same makers as Uncharted, but, this is a game that I will have on release day, it looks that good...
If you like different cop type of games, Heavy Rain is a big one for the system and got great reviews.
You could always do the shooter games, Black Ops, MW3, great games, no question but, they are cross platform. I also enjoyed Max Payne 3 (good story if you like Max Payne, I did play the 360 version tho)
Two ther epic games are inFamous & inFamous 2. That is one of THE best games ever made for a console. ;-) Why have all the best characters gotta die? !

I'm a big fan of Battlefield 3(BF in general) too. PC players say it's not a game for consoles, but I disagree. Sure it's better on PC(64P and HC graphics), but you can't say it's not good for PS3. Love that game. Way better than CoD IMO. Don't like playing with 8yr old kids!

Both BioShock games are really good, the first one has an AMAZING story and the second one lets you dual wield so the gameplay is better. The Portal Games are really good too if you like puzzles, the first one is on The Orange Box which is a great value! It has the Half Life games on it, they are sweet games if you like oldschool style FPS. For upcoming games check out Watch Dogs, Dishonored, and BioShock Infinite.
Battlefield 3 was great until all the worthless updates. CQ is every COD lovers wet dream, people are whoring aim assist, and a number of tweaks have just made the game utterly ridiculous. I will not be buying anymore battle sims in the near future it seems. The game is not anywhere near as fun as it used to be.

I don't understand... The tweaking and updates are only released to balance the game. Practically, there are no over powered weapons due to the active updating. CoD is only updated when there is really really something wrong, a huge bug or something. DICE updates the game to make it fun for every one.

Childproof Nexus 7

Our kids are using the N7 and I wondered how I could go about making it a good tool for them to learn on (games, letters, numbers etc.) but at the same time hide/restrict the more grown-up stuff, like email, maps and all the other stuff they won't have need of at this time.
I figured I can make a folder for all their games and learning apps, but has anyone got any ideas of how I can tweak the unit so when they use it, it will be "barebones" for them but still allow me access to the full features if the need arises. The unit is predominately for the kids so I won't need access that much. It would be great that once they switch it on, all they see is "their" stuff. Ideas...?
Thanks
As far as the "child proofing" goes, definitely get a good case and screen protector, maybe even something that they can put around their wrist when they hold it so they don't drop it as much.
To hide apps, download something like Apex Launcher and go to the drawer settings, it has a way to hide any installed app.
You could also install Avast! Anti virus. I think that has a way to block certain websites from being accessed and and also includes features to find the device when lost and lock certain apps.
There is also a new launcher coming out called Chameleon that looks a lot more straight forward for a kid to use. The launcher also includes pages of apps that change the feel of the device.

If you press the All Apps icon then touch and hold an icon for a built-in app, you can drag it up onto an Info icon. As well as showing you info about the app, it allows you to disable it. So you can install only 'safe' apps and disable 'non-safe' apps', including the Play Store.
Then all you have to do is make sure they don't have access to the Tapatalk app in case they read this post...

The Play Store definitely has some child-proofing available.
If you're on the more nerdy side, you could actually root the device, set it up how you like it, then either make the Market and other offending apps invisible, or lock access to them.
Just depends on how far you want to go. Something tells me that the Play Store child-proofing may be enough.
There is an app called Switch Me. Basically it lets you configure multiple profiles by setting up a new /data partition for each one allowing you to restrict access to certain apps and so on and even have multiple Google accounts setup for each user. You should check out out.

I would also look at Switchme to set up different user profiles.

I bought my 5 year old an original Samsung Galaxy tab 7" and he is autistic so went through a throwing phase when he first started getting into electronics, like when he'd lose in a game. Anyway we have just a silicon case for it and it has with held the torture of all time and it is still in great shape. He even threw it off a second story balcony and it landed on a hardwood floor... bouncing afterward... but still chugging. No dents or scratches or defects. Thing is a champ.
While the Nexus 7 is a little thinner, I figured I'd reply anyway. GET A CASE.... and a screen protector. The Galaxy tab is a stout device but let's hope the Nexus 7 is AS good if not better. It feels solid.
I just got mine after lots of torturing myself that my Transformer was sufficient, but I must say the more I use it the more I like it.

No, not child proofing the nexus 7, but instead a "Childproof Nexus 7", as the title says, which is basically what that device seems to be. Though this would not help anybody who already has a Nexus 7, it may help somebody looking for a Nexus 7 type device for their child.

Thanks for the link to my blog. As for OP's problem of rendering the "original" Nexus 7 child proof, it's technically doable by "borrowing" ROM from rooted Fuhu Nabi 2. Naturally, presenting the kid an original Fuhu Nabi 2 and taking back an original "adult" Nexus 7 would be more practical.
Pfft! Just don't let your kids use it. Make them go outside and build tree houses, play with an abacus or read encyclopaedias. 80s *****!
I also agree on getting the nabi2 its a really nice device. My 2 year old never killed her nabi1 and the 2 seems even more solid. She has thrown both of them and took a crayon (washable) to it and wild off with no marks or scratches on th screen.
The only issue I have is no root on it, but its nice and quick. Screen is not as nice as my Nexus7, but it has microsd slot and HDMI port. I hear someone rooted one but Fuhu asked them not to release how, so if anyone hears about root please post it here on the forums. I thought about trying the root tool for nexus but she loves it too much for me to risk it.

Them Fuhuans can ask anybody anything, XDA-Devs is a free-rooting country. I think the race is on already, to turn Nabi 2 into a chewable/droppable N7 with SD slot/HDMI. My guess the N7 and Nabi 2 are twin brothers (ASUS 370T being their dad), so a "standard" N7 rooting tool will work. If not at the first attempt, then with some minor tweak.
I'm following Nabi 2 (and Furbi 2) progress in my blog closely, so you're welcome there. Can't guarantee being exclusive bearer of the news though....

Also we got the glow in the dark bumper from fuhu with our VIP Gold upgrade, the new bumpers are bigger and thicker so should take a fall better. Just letting you know, not sure how rough you're kid is with it.
