[Q] Not booting after flashing TalonDEV Kernel - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry, im new to all this! I have a stocked rom and stocked kernel i had no way to get to the clockwork recovery so i tried flashing talondev kernel and my wouldnt start anymore so then i flashed the setrion kernel and it worked fine but iwanted to install the contiuumm rom and then i tried to install it from the recovery and my got bricked! i unbricked it and restored it stock again but i dont know where to start again! please help me im still a noobie to all this, but ireallly want that rom!

First off do you have Gb bootloaders? Secon after you flash Talon turn on recovery (i897 bootloaders Vol up and down + power button, i9000bootloaders down+power)

is this it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129821
so i just flash that and then flash the talon one? but will that get me to the clockwork recovery too?

according to this Flash GB bootloaders and flash the kernel and it should work. Mind you that's a I9000 rom and it should work with I897 bootloaders but I've never tried it. But I usually recommend I897 over I9000's just because its native, but its a thing of choice i guess.

[Q] Question: How to back up (or acquire) stock kernel for I9000M (Bell Vibrant)

Long part (Skip for TLDR)
I have the bell I9000M vibrant, i have a variety of ROMS, and been playing with flashing with odin. Now im looking into installing darky's rom cuz aparently its one of the best however the lack of a ROM and not being able to boot clockwork recovery has posed a problem.
After looking, aparently i need recovery 2e and currently have recovery 3e, i need to flash a kernel that has recovery 2e so i bypass the signature check to run cw recovery, to intall darky's rom from the zip.
I want to cover my ass tho, since this is my THIRD SGS and i dont have high hopes, so i back up everything three or four times just in case.
TLDR: How do i back up my stock I9000M kernel, or where can i get the stock kernel, or is it included in the UGJL2 stock rom that i already have backed up?
Its in JL2.
is there a way of getting the kernel without flashing the entire rom?

If the phone dies whats the difference. Just flash the whole JL2 rom in Odin.

Not sure what you're trying to do. Kernel has nothing to do with the SD card dying. Flashing stock JL2 with the new secondary boot loader would hopefully prevent it from dying.
And the JL2 kernel has recovery 3e, not 2e, so dunno why you're trying to flash it.

[Q] Please help with brick!

Hi guys,
I have tried to install SimplyHoney 3.5 on Froyo 2.2
What I did:
* Factory reset (to remove the speedmod I had).
* Installed CF-Root-JP6-v1.2-Busybox-1.17.1 (to change the recovery)
* Gingerbread Starter with SpeedMOD K13E
* Then I have downloaded SimplyHoney 3.5 to update.zip
Booted into Clock Work Recovery and installed the update.zip
It ran through some code until it said it was successful.
When I reboot I get stuck on the samsung galaxy screen.
I can make it both to the Restore screen and to Download screen.
Restore is doing nothing....
What should I do??
Please help!
Man,
If you think that's bricked, I'd hate to see your face when you deal with a real brick.
Try to flash from recovery again.
If it fails, flash a stock rom and start over. Your internal sd card may need formatted too.

I'm pretty sure that's your problem. You need to flash a stock JVH that contains the bootloaders. Then you flash the custom rom from recovery.
I agree, if 3.5 is jvh then u need jvh kernel and gingerbread bootloaders (check out nitr8s new ezodin bootloader flash

Clockwork Recovery Rogers 2.3.3

I have Rogers 2.3.3 Official installed and rooted, but every time I go to install Clockwork Recovery from Rom Manager, the Captivate is not listed as a device, I only get Galaxy S i9000, Galaxy S i9000 (MTD), Nexus S, Nexus S 4G. Is there another way to install it? or Did i do something to make the Captivate not show up? Thanks!
there is no CWM update.zip for gingerbread (CWM3) for the captivate.

So how are people getting it on there Captivates then? or do they flash all roms through odin?
If you're gonna flash a ROM, flash a kernel that has cwm included already with Odin, it's probably not going to boot all the way to Android with a different kernel, but just button combo into recovery and flash the ROM.

I tired flashing a kernel that has cwm from this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127578 but everytime I go in recovery it says "E:/can't mount /cache" etc..... Had to flash back to Rogers 2.3.3 kernel.
That's a beta kernel, just try an xcal kernel, talon, or darkcore. Hell even a froyo kernel should work for just getting cwm, and will be flashed over with the kernel included in the ROM.
Thank you so much for the crystal clear answers! so now that I have GB Bootloaders, can I pretty much flash whatever i897 or i896 rom I want?

yup. if you were to downgrade to a froyo rom, most of those use amend scripting (for cwm 2.5 and under) whereas the ginger roms now use cwm 3 which uses edify, so you would have to flash a froyo kernel wirt odin, or sgs kernel flasher app, button combo into recovery so that you have cwm 2.5.

I just try them all and they don't work! I'm getting bootloop! And now when I flashed back to Rogers Kernel, I'm also getting bootloop, I had to go in recovery and clear cache and userdata to fix it.

Bootloop after flashing Fugumod Kernel

Hey guys, stuck in a bootloop after attempting to flash Fugumod on CM7.1 stable on my Samsung i9000 rom as per the title!
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help in advance
had the same problem. Just flash back to stock using Odin as long as you can get into Download Mode. Can you?
Yup can get into download and clockwork no prob. Back to the stock cm7.1 kernel? Where would i find the .tar for that? Or any other .tar that would let me boot and backup everything?
Cheers!
having the same problem...
I've tried Glitch, Platypus and neither of them can pass the boot screen.
But Fugu works in a mod rom based on CM7.1.
Would anybody help us?
I flashed Glitch and booted no prob. Seems a tad unstable though and would prefer to flash back to the stock cm7.1 kernel. Anyone know where to find just the kernel?

Flash the CM7.1 rom again without any WIPE.
If you do wanna backup the stock kernel, after doing what I mentioned above, try SGS Kernel Flasher to extract the kernel.

[Q] Back to Eclair Stock ROM from Gingerbread 2.3.5 (Stock)

I can flash directly from Gingerbread? I tried 2 times with OdinOne Click flash but I have not flash because Odin gets stuck in factoryfs. Thanks to USB JIG I managed to revive my Captivate.
yes you can, but why?
odin sometimes locks up. keep trying. where did you get this one click?
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
I will try with a file .tar i got. I need Flash CyanogenMod 7.1, the Stock ROM Gingerbread is worse than Eclair, I am disappointed, I thought it would be better
Another question. It is necessary wipe/data before flash with Odin?
Just flash CM7 from where you are now. And Odin wipes it for you
Sent from my CM9 ICS i897 Captivate
Are you sure that I can flash directly from Gingerbread 2.3.5 (Stock) to a ROM CyanogenMod 7.1 (Official)? Had I known it would not be with the disastrous Stock ROM 2.3.5. And from any Custom Kernel? I have Corn Kernel v7.06
Yes flash it with CWM Recovery and it will boot loop (supposed to happen). Pull the battery and put it back in. Boot into recovery and wipe everything then flash CyanogenMod and Gapps. Reboot and you're good to go. If you wanna flash a custom kernel I recommend Glitch 13.1
