Lets get this out of the way first. I am not responsible if you screw up your phone, but you are probably here because you already screwed up your phone. I have now been through this several times over the last few days. Some will say this process is overkill, but there is no denying that it always works, so please refrain from stating the obvious.
If you have installed or updated CM7/MIUI and lost your baseband, IMEI, or both, this should help you. Due to the amount of people currently having this problem, I would recommend this be stickied at least temporarily until things are straightened out, so people can find it easily.
For Windows only, I do not have a Mac.
Step 1 - Read the entire post and understand everything involved before you attempt this. This is a long ride, probably 30-40 minutes from start to end. This is not for new people, and will assume you have a certain amount of knowledge because you attempted to flash CM7/MIUI.
DO NOT SKIP OR SHORTCUT ANY STEP IN THIS PROCESS, UNLESS I SPECIFICALLY STATED YOU MET THE CRITERIA TO DO SO. DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT TRYING THIS UNLESS YOU CAN REACH DOWNLOAD MODE AND RECOVERY USING BUTTONS WITH THE PHONE OFF!
Step 2 - Gather what you need...
1 - The AIO Vibrant Toolbox : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509
Install according to directions in the post. Donate to this guy. He spent alot of time making this easy for you to do.
2 - The old CM7 install files : http://www.mediafire.com/?gn4qoonoe3cjyp6
Unzip to a location that is easy to get to.
3 - The new version of CM7/MIUI you want to install, from the thread of your choice. Donate to the developer you are using, they spend alot of their free time making your phone better. They don't get paid for it, and they dont charge you for it.
4 - Your phone, with a full battery.
Step 3 - Odin to JFD and install Clockwork 2.x
1 - Fire up the AIO Toolbox. Do not connect your phone yet, but power it down and pull your battery. See that sticker under it that says IMEI? Write it down! You will be referencing it a few times throughout the process. Start Odin and select your pit and pda files, they should automatically come up if you are using the toolbox. Hold down your volume up and down buttons, and insert your USB cable, then insert your battery. You should go to download mode, and see Odin connect. Hit start and let it fly. Once it reboots, unplug your phone. Go to settings/about phone and you should have a JFD baseband. Hit status, and check your IMEI. See how it matches the one you wrote down? Yay! Move on to the next item. If it does not, you have some reading to do because you really screwed something up, and it is beyond my power to help you...
2 - Mount phone and put the following files on the root of the sd card:
vibrant-efsbackup.zip (if you already have a backup/efs folder on your sd card you do not need this)
cm7-vibrant-initial-20110224.zip
The zip file of the new CM7/MIUI rom you want to flash.
3 - Download ROM Manager and install clockwork recovery 2.x (if you already have the update.zip on your sd card, which you should, you can also skip this) and power down your phone.
4 - Boot into recovery using the 3 button method (holding volume up and down and power, releasing power when the word VIbrant appears on your screen), hit reinstall packages, you may have to hit it twice to get to clockwork recovery. Choose to install zip from sd card, and select vibrant-efsbackup.zip. Let it do its thing. Then select reboot, and when it does, check your sd card for a backup/efs folder. Got it? Good. Power down the phone. (Obviously, if you already have the efs backup completed, you could have skipped this step.)
Step 4 - Install Clockwork 3.x and Old CM7
1 - Fire up the AIO Toolbox. Do not connect your phone yet, but pull your battery. Start Odin and hit the pda button, select the file cm7-vibrant-initial-kernel.tar from the CM7 package you unzipped (Remember, in a place that is easy to find). THIS IS IMPORTANT - UNCHECK AUTO REBOOT!!! Hold down your volume up and down buttons, and insert your USB cable, then insert your battery. You should enter download mode, and see Odin connect. Hit start and let it fly. Once it is finished, pull the usb cable. With the download mode screen still on your phone, boot into recovery using the 3 button method. You should now be in clockwork recovery 3.x. Move on to the next item! If you did not get in, you can try to pull your battery, replace it and boot into recovery from there. If you still can't get there, you get to go where the people who do not properly follow instructions go... back to Step 1.
2 - In clockwork 3.x, choose factory reset, and let it do it's thing. Then go to mounts and storage, and format system, data, and cache. Choose install zip from sd card and choose cm7-vibrant-initial -20110224.zip. As it is installing, one of the last things you see should be "restoring efs". Hit reboot when finished, and boot into CM7. When it boots, make sure you toggle the lockscreen a couple times so it connects to service. Check baseband and IMEI again. Baseband should have changed to KB1. IMEI still the same right? Awesome! Power down the phone, move to the next step! It's not? You my friend, get to meet all your other friends back at Step 1.
Step 5 - Installing what you really want...
1 - Boot into recovery using the 3 button combo. Do a factory reset, wipe cache partition, go to advanced and wipe Dalvik cache. Choose install zip from sd card, and pick that shiny new version of CM7/MIUI you picked out. You are almost there. Flash it! Reboot, and when it comes back up, take note of what time it is and DO NOT TOUCH THE PHONE FOR 15 MINUTES. You have no idea the amount of bugs this squashes. After that, check the baseband, it will be KB1 unless the rom you just flashed changed it. Check the IMEI, even though you already know it is right anyway. If it is not, do i have to say it again? You know where you are going...
2 - Destroy the paper you wrote your IMEI on, you would not want that info in the wrong hands...
3 - Enjoy your new rom
FAQ:
Q: I did everything you said, and it did not work!
A: You either skipped a step, or did not stop at the point I told you you were screwed.
Q: No, seriously, I did everything you said!
A: Seriously, I have done this 5 times in the past 3 days, and it worked every time.
Q: I installed CM7 nightly #9,10,or 11 with this method, and I have no sound on calls. What gives?
A: These builds have known issues with in call audio. Flash CM7.1
Q: Once I am on CM7/MIUI, do I have to do this every time or can I update normally?
A: Once you are on CM7 or MIUI with the proper IMEI and a good baseband, you should be able to update via the rom posting instructions. If you decided to switch from CM7 to MIUI or vice versa, I would go back to this process to get your initial installation.
Q: I installed CM7.1 and then tried to go to MIUI, and lost everything again, what happened?
A: There are changes betweeen CM7 to 7.1 that have made this difficult due to compatability issues, which is why I recommend doing this process again if you want to switch between the two.
Q: I thought there was an easier way to do this, why so many steps?
Read the first paragraph of the post, but I guess that is also asking too much...
Great post. Thanks for the info...
Pretty sure you can install the latest CM7 just via clockwork2.
i thought the baseband loss was due to kernel compatibility with the newer versions of CM7/Miui? Good post nonetheless hope it helps people out.

That is the first paragraph of my post. And it has already been stated that people are losing IMEI/Baseband anyway. This always works, period. Thanks for the input.
I did the steps properly and now my phone only boots to recovery...
yup i do this every time - the last few attempts with the quick two file flash method is causing all sorts of crap to go wrong on my phone even from a fresh odin - i am pdy05 and i approve this message
-screen tearing
-wifi drop
-incorrect model
-no cell connection etc....

Exactly why I went back to doing this. My last couple quick flash installs have been a disaster.

I've done this twice now, and yet again I end up in a situation where my phone will only boot to Clockwork Recovery.
If it helps, Clockword always says E:no misc partition at the bottom. Never seen that before with all of my flashing endeavors.

The e: thing means nothing, it is a old CM7 thing. At exactly what point are you getting stuck booting into recovery?
Is this your first time flashing CM7/MIUI?

Nope, I was previously running CM7.1. I said **** it and installed 7.1 from CWM2 and it worked perfectly. IMEI is correct and everything.
It seemed to **** up when ODINing the initial kernel.

Glad it worked out for you anyway, may have been a bad download. Those are the exact files I use to do it... and I am on CM7.1 using this method after losing my IMEI trying to go from clockwork 2...
Was it when you tried to boot into clockwork 3 for the first time, or after you wiped and flashed the initial rom?

Completely clueless, but that is why I put this up, so after I had a definite way to fix mine, others could fix theirs. The problem itself seems to be more with MIUI than CM7, but it is happening with both. I would not be surprised if it happened to more people who have simply not checked their IMEI, and are working off a generic one because they have service.
Curious what happens if the imei is in the wrong hands and stolen
- excuse my grammar im using swype-
My external sd card is not recognized after successfully booting MIUI. This has been bother me for days now... I see sd card icon in the status bar and it says "sd card safe to remove" I tried mounting/unmounting/formating - I only see the main partition when i plug usb cable to windows. EMMC folder is empty as well.
Does anyone else experience this?!
what i dont understand is Rom manager premium made it so easy a baby could install it! download rom off rom manager premium CM7 nightlies make sure u flash clockwork recovery vibrant mtd and 3x and not 2x! install download and wait......way too easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Make sure u wipe data, wipe dalvik and backup rom when it asks its pretty simple.
I've got a better way, install Rom manager, select rom, click flash. TADA!!!!
If you have more than 10 posts its a better idea to ask ur questions in ROM thread, else this thread is for you.
Safe Flashing from Gingerbread
Thank you for starting this thread
I am currently running Apex 6.3 and want to flash to a newer rom, Apex 7.
I have a Rogers phone I896 and so I no longer have my volume buttons working to put it in to recovery or download mode, I have read not to load any kinda fix for that(something about two boot loaders being a bad idea).
My understanding is that I have to go back to stock before flashing a new rom(I have seen you have roms that can be upgraded rather then re-flashed) but I want to wipe my internal sd card and flash like new.
Do I just use ODIN 1 click and go back to stock and use it to clean my sd card, is that a safe option or am I missing something?
If I remember correctly I had to do like 2 or 3 steps to flash Gingerbread from from stock rom, load boot loaders, load kernel, load rom. So I am wondering if it is 1 step to go back to stock ?
I know I have seen a post on a thread on this but to find it when needed is not so easy, XDA-Developers has grown big time since I started with WM5(Android is all new to me)
Hi I had a question concerning running new boot animations for APEX 7 with Update-1 package.
I found this boot animation http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1121014 that I would like to install but it seems as though it isn't working. Is it possible with this ROM to get new boot animations?
Thank You
So you can't put the phone into download mode?
Odin 1 click is pretty straight forward from what I remember. First I boot up the phone normally and hit "master clear". Second I put the phone into download mode and hit the "Start" button which goes and installs the stock firmware. Obviously you need to be in debug mode to do all this so make sure you're good with that.
I don't know if you already have it but here is a link for the Odin 1 click I use.

Will have to wait for boot animations to work buddy, as of now kernels dont support it
If you are already on ApeX 6.x you can flash 7 using CWM.. No need to ODIN back to JF6.
In worst case if u have to ODIN back that should be to stock GB.
But as i said just flash 7 on top of 6.3 by going into recovery mode

First off I want to say thank you for making an awesome ROM. Loving it thus far and has been running flawlessly except for one minor issue I ran into tonight. For the MIUI lockscreen the phone freezes then goes to the android boot animation screen and right back to the MIUI lock screen whenever I try to unlock with SMS unlock. Is this a known issue with the screen unlock concerning MIUI?

hey! amazing job on this one looks really promising! I have GR-12 on my cappy with the latest talon kernel and GB bootloader. my question is, if i want to install this do i need to flash back to stock 2.1 and do the entire process (reinstall talon and bootloader then install your rom)? OR can i just enter recovery mode with my phone currently using gr-12 and use CWM to install APEX 7 rom? either way i have to first install apex 7 then use cwm to install update 1 directly after correct?

Installed Apex_7 on my phone and i used a kernal swap to bypass the froyo file verification instead of going back to eclair first. after i got all working and installed Apex i rebooted my phone the at&t logo came up then the screen went all crazy and then kept replaying the galaxy s animation so then i used odin to go back to stock after odin said success i rebooted the phone and now im stuck at the at&t logo. cant get into download mode
AND i have made a usb jig but it does not work i tried 3 100k resistors and 3 100k and 1 1k and still nothing. Also if i take a ohm meter it will only read up to 2 resistors at a time once i add the 3rd one i get a split second reading then nothing but ive tested them all by there self and they read 0.10 and 2 reads 0.20 then 3 reads 0.30 for a split second then reads nothing.
Thanks anyhelp greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!
I dont wanna make this my new paper weight.
Watsaa, first off I have to say this is an awesome rom. I have tried other GB roms and this one just rocks. I am running Apex 7 update 1 and the only issue I had was everytime I returned to the launcher it seem to reload all the icons and widgets. Then i flashed Talon 2.2 and wow!! It runs much better and no more reloading of the launcher. Smooth as butter.

I NEED HELP!
I've recently updated GingerDX from v28 to v29 using CWM. Once updated, I rebooted and now I'm stuck at the 'Sony Ericsson' screen. Nothing happens. Tried everything, but now the phone doesn't go past that screen. I can't even boot with CWM to apply any restore (I did a backup before installing new version of Gdx).
Please, anyone could tell me what to do? How do you boot the phone with CWM after turning the phone on? Is there any way to go past the 'Sony Ericsson' screen? Will I need to fully restore my phone to its original OS or anything?
(and most important... is this 'hardbricking' the phone?)
Thanks in advance!
It's just softbrick. Use PC Companion or Flashtool to install stock ROM, then root, install recovery etc.
repeatedly tap the screen at boot to access CWM. If you can get into there try to reflash rom, full wipe etc.
If you cant get into CWM you have a soft brick and you need to repair with PCC - re-root - re-flash etc..
Thank you for responding so fast.
I've tried tapping repeteadly the screen when turning on, but doesn't seems to work ('Sony Ericsson' screen is not moving anywhere).
And also I've installed PC Companion to do a factory reset, but this won't work either because it's asking me to turn on USB storage to connect to the phone, and since I can't get past the 'Sony Ericcson' screen there's nothing I can do.
Any ideas? I'm starting to freak out a little bit.
Thank you again.
Turn off your phone (by taking out the battery). Open PCC. Open support zone. Choose Update phone. It will shoe you a window, select repair.
Here you have some screens, it's in czech but you should know where to click.
My bad. I wasn't entering 'Support Zone'. It's done, the phone is restored to its awful Eclair system.
Since I'm doing all the process again (rooting, then changing baseband, then CWM, then installing GDX)... I'd like to start clean. Is it safe to format the SD Card? Besides losing pictures and stuff, am I running any other risk?
That should do it. Thank you guys again! I was unhopeful for a moment!
(still... what a waste of time doing all this again... but hey, the price you pay for using roms)

It is safe to format your SD card. Just backup your photos, music etc. to PC and format it. Then copy your stuff back to SD card.
OK NOW I'M REALLY UPSET!!!
I've done it all again:
1) rooted phone with SuperOneClick v1.9.1
2) installed 'xrecovery mini 0.1 beta' (copying the 3 files inside the .zip on the system > bin folder)
3) changed baseband from 006 to 015 using FlashTool
4) installed 'clockworkmod 3.2.0.0 r3 x10 mini Amend' using xrecovery
5) finally installed 'ginger dx v0.29' using clockworkmod
Now the Sony Ericsson screen again. Again, nothing. The phone is not booting. What am I doing wrong? Is any of those steps wrong?
I think I should stick to Gdx v028... if works... now I'm confused.
be sure you have installed the right rom for stucks and addons.and read for the fix.
You are missing the most important part...full wipe/factory reset before installing
Sent from my X8 using xda premium
v029 is buggy for me after fullwipe too so try staying on 28 maybe or make sure the one you install is for your kernel

I think I found what might be the problem:
In the GingerDX thread there are 2 .zips available for download:
.one that says 'Alfs/nAa'
.and one that says 'stock'
I don't even know what 'Alfs' or 'nAa' are, but I believe this version isn't suitable for my phone... anyone can check this? So I downloaded the 'stock' version, now I'm gonna try with this one.
I don't know anything about kernels and stuff... I've always flashed the ROM only... and it worked fine. Now I'm reading all this notes about kernels and Alfs and I don't even know what they are... but I'm starting to believe this has something to do with my phone softbricking.

if you have locked bootloader you have to flash stock version of ROMS.:good:
try downloading and replacing the ROM

What did you mean with locking bootloader?
About a few months ago i rooted my captivate and installed the cyanogen mod and ics with cwm recovery... at first everything was fine my phone was moving a lot faster and i liked the new look and feel to it. But recently all hell broke loose unfortunately... probably for two weeks i kept recieving a notification saying " low on space" so i started to uninstall some apps and rebooted my phone and it went away but it came back like days later. So today i did the same thing but went into my file management and deleted some useless files that i didnt really need (such as pictures and etc). Then i rebooted my phone once again and this time it got stuck on the ics animation screen where it shows those colorful tiles all over the screen but it won't boot at all i took the battery out and everything but nothing. I thought draining my battery would work but it didnt. So ultimately my question is is it possible to flash back to the stock and restart the whole process? Or do i just do a factory reset on my phone? Confused and angry cause ive had problems with this phone before i rooted it PLEASE HELP!!!

If you can get in download mode, you could flash back to stock KK4.
From there, if you wanted you could get the Corn kernel and flash it through Odin 1.85 and finally flash the ROM you want to use (ICS/ or JB)
Do you have the links for them??
Here is Stock KK4 with or without bootloaders...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912

whats the one with bootloaders??
In order to run a GB firmware/rom, u need the i897 gb bootloaders. They are backwards compatible and once u flash them there is no need to flash bootloaders again. If u need to flash back to stock again, use the kk4 without bootloaders.
Be sure to use a reliable micro usb/usb cable, have a constant power source, etc., because u don't want to lose connection while flashin the bootloaders...that's where the potential for a hard brick is (bad bootloader flash...mix matched bootloaders...).

Ok so basically flash back to stock without bootloaders then after that flash the ics again? i believe i flashed bootloaders the first time
And do i do a factory reset before i start?
If u have never flashed the i897 gb bootloaders then u will need them. Those kk4 one clicks will do a full wipe...so back up ur apps and whatever else u want.
Odin or Heimdall Stock KK4. Odin KK4 Corn Kernel. It includes cwm. From there u can flash ur dev rom of choice...same as what BWolf56 had suggested.

ok i gotcha but the weird thing is right now it wont let me go into download mode im holding both the volume buttons but it only takes me to cwm recovery mode :/
Download is with phone powered off, hold volume down and up and plug in micro usb, having already opened Odin or Heimdall and with the usb end of the cable already plugged into pc.

Hi,
As the title says I have small problem. I bought my SGS1 with custom rom and kernel flashed into it already - sometimes it shows wrong time, went into recovery mode without my knowledge, had some problems with apps. Today I pressed Power and chose reboot - now I am stuck at animation that appears after logo kernel Semaphore. Of course I tried to look in other threads, I found a lot of them but still I cant figure out how to do it. You see, I never did it before and it's all hokus-pokus to me even tho I read stuff here at the forums. I managed to get into downloand and recovery mode using 3 button combo What do I do now? It seems way too complicated for newbie like me, every post isn't explaining it enuff for me. Can someone help me or at least give some tips, clues?
Things I got installed are Android 4 .0.4, 3.0.8 Semaphore ics 1.1.2s.
Thanks in advance guys

Get in recovery, clear cache and dalvik cache and reboot.
It will take a while to full boot cause it will have to rebuild it's cache but should work from there.
If it doesn't, You'll need more stuff but we'll get to that then.

Okay. I wiped cache and dalvik. Now I'm waiting on animation screen for 30 minutes. I'll let you know what happens after 1 hour.
By the way does any of those problems could be related to low battery? I had like 20% last time I rebooted my phone and problems started.
One more thing is - I don't have memory microSD card - guy sent me 16GB one but it doesn't work. Can we fix it without it? I wanted to buy a new one eventually
EDIT: Okay, one hour passed after I wiped cache. Everything was stuck on animation but suddenly, after I walked out of phone for a 5 minutes it stopped - everything was gone, I couldn't Power it or use 3 button combo. I think that's cuz battery went low. I plugged it into charger, we'll see if it charges. I hope so. EDIT2: Yeah, that was battery. Still can enter Recovery.

Did you recently remove the sd card? If so, try booting with it in your cell.
If that doesn't work, Mount your phone through recovery to backup your stuff on PC (like pics).
Now you'll need Odin KK4 without bootloaders (found in the stickies). As will as corn kernel and Odin 1.87. And finally a JB rom you wanna use on your internal sd.
Get your phone in download mode and flash KK4 (stock GB). Let it do us it's magic, once done, make sure it boots up fine. Then get back in recovery to flash corn kernel with odin 1.87 (gotta put it in the PDA slot). Finally, follow the FULL instructions provided by the ROM dev you chose.

Damn that's confusing. First thing this subforum - it's for AT&T and other branded phones? My isn't like one of them! I guess I had the wrong subforum all the time. Or maybe your instructions will still work with my GT-I9000? Damn, I got confused seeing AT&T and Rogers everywhere in stickies. My phone aint associated to any of those brands. Am I writing in wrong subforum? :3 That'd sad

Eh yeah you're and it's a really good thing you noticed! Could've bricked your phone.
The lil guide i gave you is the same but you gotta use their files. You'll have to go over there to get them.
