Hey all,
I was trying to flash from stock (I897UCKF1) to 2.3.3 (I897UCKF1), which were both flashed using Odin. Partway through the 2.3 flash, it froze (which has happened to me many times before), so I disconnected my phone and pulled the battery. Now I've got what seems to be a hard brick; I've tried every button combination I can find and nothing will force it into download.
Would a jig help me here? If not...would I be able to send it into samsung, considering it's still under warranty (I could even throw in an "I dunno what happened, I was just doing the official update!")? I'm really hesitant to drop the money for a jtag, but I will if I must.
Any help is appreciated.

Before you do anything, does the phone show any signs of life at all? Lights come on, makes sounds, levitates several inches off the floor, etc? If you can get it to respond in any way, it's most likely not bricked, just "clay".
If you're in a clay state, you can most likely use a jig (make your own or buy one) to get into download mode and get rolling again.
If it's totally lifeless, JTAG or warranty service are pretty much your only options.
Nope, this one is actually 'bricked.' No lights, no noise, just that damned solid black screen.

If you're under warranty, you could send it back to samsung and hope for the best. There's a monetary risk involved with that, but your other choice is mobiletechvideos (connexion2005) and the $50 Jtag service.
So it's either maybe pay a lot, or definitely pay less.

they sent me one with a blemished screen so im going to eventually pay to jtag my old one and use it as a primary and keep the new one as a backup.

It sounds like the bootloader flashing was borked. One of a couple scenarios is currently in place:
1. Mismatched bootloaders (froyo or eclair and GB bootloaders)
2. Corrupted bootloader (one or both)
When Odin was pushing bootloaders to your phone and froze, something didn't completely write, and now the phone can't reach the necessary stages to continue the boot process.
You may want to read up here, as this poster does a really good job of explaining all of this.
My understanding is that JTAG physically connects to the motherboard of the phone and pushes correct bootloaders over whatever is there now.
To prevent this in the future, make sure you have a computer that has a solid power connection, a solid USB cable that has shown it works properly on smaller, non-dangerous flashes, and a good download of whatever rom you're flashing.
And if at all possible, don't pull the cable when you're doing any sort of bootloader flashing (basically jumping to or from gingerbread bootloaders).
For the cost of 3 small resistors, it's worth a shot to build your own jig.
Many people have had good luck that.

Sometimes it will help if you keep the battery out of it for 5 mins, or press the Download Mode button combo for 30 seconds.

he was flashing KF1, the captivate gb. that has the same button combos, its only the I9000 bootloaders that have different (better) combos.
Had the same thing happen to me last night. Mine at least shows life. Froze up while trying to upgrade to 2.3.3. None of the button combos do anything but bring up the Phone <!> PC death screen. Bought the resistors for a jig today, it turned the phone on but right to the death screen again. Any ideas? Guessing jtag is my only option now...
thats not a death screen that is the "flash incomplete" screen, when odin freezes before it writes the image for the download mode screen that screen is all that is there when download protocol is initiated. use the jig and if odin sees it from that screen try flashing from where is is.

My phone (model 1007) had been rooted and running Serendipity. All was well until I had trouble with phone calls. So I unrooted and reflashed to stock. I reformatted and it was like brand new, out the box. I didn't have the time to reroot so I kept it clean. I pressed on 'update' on the settings menu (was that stupid of me?) and it just shut down. So NOW,
I can't turn it on! My phone starts to turn on but just shows this little spinning circle and the screen goes black. I can get into download and recovery though, so that's good right?
The phone will only charge. The very FEW times I actually got it to turn on the phone said that the USB was connected when it wasn't!
Could someone please, please help me?
Also, this is a phone from the warranty dept. It's refurbished because my other Captivate wouldn't turn on (I'm just having some sucky luck, right?)
So am I still able to return it? It's been less than 90 days i got it and has never been in contact with water or dropped. In fact, I always cradle it in a nice case.
I'm just terrified of the horror stories I've heard about Samsung warranty dept and AT&T's warranty dept. I don't want to give it to them to have some crazy $500 charge, you know? I think I don't have anything to worry about but it just freaked me out.
I had a similar experience, but mine caught itself in a reboot loop. I wa able to get back into download mode and re-flash, fixing the issue.
Have you tried to see if it will at least go into download mode?

The OTA update ATT sent out has been known to cause these issues on some phones, Here are your 2 options. 1. Return it and get another referb. 2. Go down to your local Radio shack and get the parts for a jig, (directions in the forums. A search for Jig will get you there) and then not worry about much flashing roms from then as a Jig will work 99.9% of the time.
That is of course after you see if you can get into download mode without the jig.
lol I've tried jigs before. I suck at making them and it never worked for me. Clearly, I've been too sloppy in making them. I can get into download mode. But I've already reflashed with the same results. If I keep getting the same results I'm afraid someone will tell me I have a hardware issue.
Is the jig the only thing left to try?
Thanks soooo much for replying!

Ok you can get into download mode so you should be ok. What have you been flashing?
#1 dont need a jig - just 3 resistors
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10112309&postcount=1
HINT dont touch the resistor leads with your bare fingers, it can change the resistance, especially if youre sweaty. USE TAPE on the ends
#2 if you dont think you can do that, you can buy a premade jig on ebay DELIVERED for under 10 bucks, i just ordered one for 8 just in case.

use this one buddy and be patient with it. it works if you need help you can pm me cause ive been there before.
OK well i was installing Darkys latest rom. I was at the point where i was in
download mode and odin. While odin was loading files the usb slipped out of the
phone because nothing besides the stock usb cord happens to stay firmly in the
charging port on this phone. This is the 2nd time this happed but when it
happened this time my phone just stopped working and by stop working i mean i
get absolutely no picture on the screen. nothing happens when its plugged into
power cord or usb cord. nothing. tried holding all 3 buttons in tons of times and
nothing.
Im out of warranty and got no insurance. I did get att to give me 180 credit cuz
i threatened to cancel. so if i cant fix this im gonna use a crappy prepaid phone
for the time being. If the SGS2 doesnt come out by march then ill probably get
an axtrix even tho i would rather get SGS2.
So please does anyone know of anything i can try?? i'm probably gonna goto an att store and try a new battery. Any suggestions would be appreciated???
You tried pulling everything, plug in usb, hold rocker, put back in batt? My understanding is, if you have the bad luck of that cable coming out while loading the boot loader then you r indeed SOL.

Double spacing isn't necessary. We aren't going to grade your post.
You hopefully now understand that flashing to stock isn't the way to avoid problems; it's the way to create big ones.
Try removing the battery, wait a couple of minutes, plug in USB, hold volume up+down, while holding up+down insert the battery and see if that gets you back into download mode.

I tried all that. Ive probably flashed every single rom in the development section of the forum.
If it gets unplugged while doing an update then usually it displays the phone..!..computer picture and you can still get into download mode from there. I'm getting nothing tho.
the reason i think it could be the battery is because it may have been pretty close to dying which is stupid for flashing when it was close to dead but i wanted to hurry up because i had to leave the house. i'm wondering if since the software on there now is corrupt would that make the phone unable to charge. thats why i want to try a new battery

Besides a jig, I have nothing else for you sorry.
But on a different spectrum, if you do get a new phone, dont get the atrix, it is the worst phone out of all the phones coming out on att. Get the inspire our the infuse if you dont want to hold a dinner plate to your head.

phone needs to be able to power on for a jig to work.
how are you out of warranty? (besides the custom rom) the phone has a 1 year warranty and it is not been on the market that long.
if the phone *happened* to be *dammaged* in a way that they would never notice AND would NEVER be able to read the memory (with out spending thousands of dollars), THEY WOULD NEVER KNOW you flashed custom rom and voided your warranty. they would try to test it, nope, broken, NEXT...
and SGS2 expected in june

Ive heard the international version of the SGS2 will be out long before the att version will be. So i might use my upgrade on an iphone 4 and then sell it and buy the international SGS2.

So I was flashing the steam kernel and it failed using Odin. I then got the infamous pic with the cell phone-exclamation-computer. I have had this happen in the past. No prob right? I have a jig which I've used before several times and it worked. Now when I use the jig i get the same pic, not download. I tried adb. device not found. tried pluging in with both vol up and down pressed, same thing. Any suggestions? I'm hoping this is recoverable. I've even tried taking out the battery, plug in usb to comp than phone, holding down vol down button and putting back the battery. Same prob. Tried reinstalling the drivers....same prob.
The fact that your getting that image is a great sign. The jig you are using may be not functioning properly. If its a home made jig, they can easily become ineffective if you touch the resistors. That changes the resistance of the whole jig and will fail to put the phone in download.

It's a jig I bought of ebay. It's worked several times in the past.
I soft bricked and got that picture. When I plugged into Odin one click it lit up, and I flashed back to stock. It didn't do it the first time. I opened Odin, plugged in, and held all three buttons, as it looped. After two or three loops, it recognized in Odin, and I was able to restore to stock.
I tried what I was flashing in the first place, and soft bricked again, this time no matter what I did Odin was no go, but I was able to fix with a jig.
Give Odin a try. Others have had that too: phone!computer working as download mode.

Quarlow, you are AWESOME!!!!! Got it to stock again. Didn't use oneclick cuz this build is a 1010 build, so i've been apprehensive about using it, so instead I used Odin 3 v1.52 and used ucjh2 in the pda and 512 pit and repartitioned. Odin recognized the phone even though I had the phone!comp thing going on. First time it failed so I tried again and it worked perfectly. Thanks much my friend, I would've never thought to just try it without having download and the shoveling droid.

If you haven't soft bricked yet then your not flashing enough then I haven't needed mine in quite a while but it is worth it to have around for sure rather than when it happens and you struggle to build one or wait to buy one for a few days/week. Cheapest insurance to have around.
Plus I think most roms have progressed enough that is less common to have bugs in them that would soft brick the phone. But maybe 6-8 months ago with trying out all the different 2.1 and 2.2 roms it was bound to happen. If it wasn't for me getting soft bricked on occasions and learning how to recover from it I wouldn't of learned half what I think I know...

Hey guys. I've had my cappy since last august (one year, obviously) and today an act of god happened while I was trying to flash my phone to serendipity 6.4 - lightning struck my dorm building (poor college student), and the power went out.
anywho, as you know the warranty period is one year (stupid if you're locked in for 2 years, imho) and guess what? my warranty expired YESTERDAY. FML. called AT&T and they won't let me get a new one now, and I'm not eligible for an upgrade. so... i have two options - shell out a lot of cash that I don't have for an insurance replacement or new phone, or fix my phone. I've tried making a jig, and it didn't work. None of the key combos work. It always goes to the phone-warning-computer screen. I searched and searched for a miracle solution but found nothing. Does anyone have anything I can try?
If not... is there anyone out there with an HTC inspire or captivate they'd be willing to sell me? This is the only phone I have, I don't have a backup, nor a home phone line.
With the pc screen you can't hold down the volume buttons and plug in usb with Odin running? If you're on gb kf1 bootloaders I remember seeing somewhere that screen is download mode. Worth a try.
That's one of my biggest fears. Precisely why I started using my laptop for flashes.

This is precisely the reason why I do all my flashing from my laptop and I have a jig (or two) around me...and an entire pack of resistors on my desk somewhere. I went to the shack the other day and bought the 10 dollar super pack of resistors, and as a Computer Engineering major, I should never have to buy resistors ever again...I gives you somewhere around 500 resistors of differing resistance.
worked with another jig (a better made one)? Gratz!!
My samsung captivate had never given me any problems(in the very short but good few months I've had it) until I tried to downgrade from Gingerbread(2.3.5) to Froyo about 4 days back.
While using Odin 1 click (and the phone was rooted) to accomplish what I just said, the process seemingly carried out perfectly, the "passed" message appeared in Odin and it looked like it was a success, but instead of rebooting as usual after flashing, my Cappy just went completely blank, and has stayed like that ever since. :crying:
I have tried every button combo there is, and since Jigs are for soft bricks, I guess there's no use.
The only remedy that I haven't gone for yet, is Jtag.
Can someone, anyone, PLEASE help me here!?
Hoping someone gets it working here..

Well I've used Odin 3 v 1.8.5 and even Odin3 v1.7 many, many times and it's all run perfectly, but this one was Odin 3 One Click v 1.00
I've never bricked a phone ever, and yeah this one's a badass hard brick for sure.
ANY help would be really appreciated, all!
Can you provide a link to the thread you dl'd from?

As you can see, it's from here. That's the Odin I used, but I don't think there was anything wrong with the file(at least I hope not)
It completed the process, gave the "passed" message, and then the phone went blank, like immediately.
Any thoughts on how that may have happened? 'Cause I thought it may have been bricked due to Odin crashing, but it did go through till the end, seemingly successful.

^ ^ This jig, is it for a hard bricked captivate or a soft bricked one? 'Coz although I'm definitely not confident with tearing up a micro USB cable, I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow. Heading to Radioshack first thing in the morning. Last shot God dammit :/
^
Jig won't do anything for a "Hard" Brick...only J-tag and/or Unbrickable Mod.

Something had to go wrong when the jf6 bootloaders were flashed, obviously. If u did not close that Odin yet (unlikely, i know) u could scroll through the log and see what it says about the boot.bin and sbl.bin.

Well Odin was closed, as expected. So that's not an option obviously.
Is Jtag doable by users, like could I get instructions on how to go about it? Or would I have to send it in?
And any other ideas?
Regardless, i recommend mobiletechvideos.com for the fix.
Respected and reliable !!

Dude if nothing works and you have had the phone for less than 1 year call at&t tell him you had your phone plugged into your computer over night charging, you woke up and the phone won't turn on now. And yiur house lost power and regained and there must have been a power surge around your area. You don't know what happened but it won't respond to anything....also do you know if your tripped the flash counter at all? Or did you reset it? P.m. me if any help needed I just went through this with my note....if all else fails p.m. me I have another fix but it isn't free but its cheaper than buying a new phone outright...

Well I thought of that too, but then there's a problem. I actually bought this phone from a friend, a couple months ago, since I wasn't sure how good of a model this was and I didn't want to go get myself a new Cappy just to be let down and want another one, you know?
Still, spent 160$ on it.
Anyway, he doesn't have the receipt, there's no way I can get att to replace it like you suggested.
And just a side note, the phone was in mint condition, never even been rooted before it got to me, lol!
Btw nope, no flash counter.
Huh? Att will not ask for a receipt when doing a warranty exchange...I've never had an issue with people not having receipts for a manufacturer defect....you will be fine as long as the phone was purchase less than a year ago
This Public Service Announcement brought to you by a pimped out At&t gNote rocking *The Collectives* AOCP CP1...

I thought they'd need it as proof, but thanks!
I'll head over to ATT in a couple hours and see what they say.
I'll let you know.
FYI - the return may have a hiccup in it. Since you bought it from a friend and not from AT&T (or an authorized reseller), they don't have any proof of how long you've had it. There's no way for them to know whether you got it yesterday or 2 years ago, so they may put up a fight about honoring the warranty.
This is just speculation, but I just wanted to throw it out there that it may not go as smoothly as we would all like it to go for you.

Thanks for the heads up though!
Any suggestions on how I should go about it then? Should I even tell ATT that I got it from a friend? Instead I could say I got it from ATT but lost the receipt...maybe a loophole somewhere.
If the phone had been activated for less than a year and its not a refurbished unit, they should replace it.
