[Q] Won't Install Apps after Froyo Root - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

New Poster, but been lurking here alot.
I have a Captivate that started out 2.1. I rooted the phone using One Click Root. Shortly after 2.2 became available. After updating to stock 2.2, nothing installs properly. So I decided to fix my phone.
I downloaded the Captivate Tool Kit here. Installed the drivers. Flashed it back to Stock. Rooted the phone. Then updated to stock 2.2 again. It erased the root, so I rooted it again using One Click Root because the Tool Kit would not do it. And now I'm back to the same problem. Is there a fix for this?
I'm not familiar with the SDK Tools or using the ABD commands...Can this be fixed without this knowledge.
Reason for root: I use a sideloaded Wireless Tethering App.

It appears that the problem is before Root. I flashed back to stock 2.1 then updated to stock 2.2 through Samsung Kies. It let me install a few apps then it appears that when I put my SD Card (ScanDisk 32GB) in, it stops me from downloading anything off the market.
I just pulled my SD Card out and rebooted. Now it lets me download and even successfully installs apps. At one point, I had a Market Access Apk that I sideloaded onto the phone. It needed Root and my phone was already rooted. I was trying to see the T-Mobile market. I do remember setting the Install To option to SD Card only. Maybe that has something to do with it? Can anyone help me?

Not to steer you away from here, but maybe it would be worth looking for an application called the Sideload wonder machine to put your wireless tethering app on your phone, without having to deal with rooting it.
If you're trying to see the T-Mobile market and you have wi-fi access, try pulling your sim card and/or putting your phone in airplane mode, then turn wi-fi on. That might get you to where you're going.
If it's the SD card that's giving you trouble, you could always move the stuff you want to save on it to a safe place, reformat, and move the stuff back onto it. Granted you might have to reinstall some apps (and if you're not up to using Titanium backup, you'll lose saved data from those apps), but it could be worth a shot.
Or you could install a custom rom. But that's a whole other can of worms.

I'm beginning to think the SD Card is the problem. After a reformat, it appears to be working fine again. I'm going to attempt root again. The root is needed for the Wireless Tether apk I'm using. I do use the ACSWM though.
Its what turned me onto what more our phones are able to do.

That sounds promising, at least. Hopefully the reformat was all you needed.
If you ever decide to make the full plunge to a custom Rom, I don't think you'll regret it.

[Q] Rooted nook color suddenly missing apps/settings

Hi all,
I turned on my rooted nook color (which was running fine for a month) and suddenly, instead of the way I had customized the NC, I got the android logo on the screen, and was prompted to set up my google account again. It was similar to what you see as soon as you root the device for the first time. If I go to the 'extras' screen, all my downloaded apps are gone other than the default ones that came with the device. Superuser and NookColorTools are still there though. Anything I got from the market as well as all my custom settings are gone.
I have no idea what caused it. The process I used originally for stock rooting is here (using autorooter) and the device has 1.0.1. It was loaded to the internal memory.
nookdevs.com/NookColor_Rooting
Anyone know how I can return it to the way it was without losing my apps or data?
Sorry for my lack of correct terminology but I'm still new to this. I am afraid that if I try re-rooting I'll lose my settings and data. Thanks
EDIT: Just discovered something. I plugged in the NC to charge it, and it automatically installed an update bumping the firmware up to 1.1.0. I never manually did this update. And now I'm back to the default 8 apps under the extras screen, no NookColorTools or Superuser anymore. Seems it's back to factory defaults. Any way to at least salvage my angry birds data?
If you want to disable auto updates, you will need to follow these steps:
1. Re-root your NC
2. Download ADB or Root Explorer
3. Rename a file that is located in /etc/security. Change otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip_DISABLED_OTA_UPDATES
Thanks. It's odd that it was able to update the firmware at all, because it was always my understanding you needed to have the device back at stock (like new) before installing those, and this happened while it was still in a rooted state.
So you think there's no way to get it to the way it was without rooting again?

[Q] Color Nook 1.2 root

Anyone gotten the new ROM yet? I followed the instructions over at the this thread and it doesn't look like it worked.
The instruction that states "Once you are back up, you can use the browser to download and run .APK files from anywhere."..
When I go to the browser and try to select "Zeam-2.9.2.apk" or "Superuser.apk" which are mentioned in the post, I get an 'Unsupported file format'.
Sounds like something didn't work right, but I'm not sure what that is.. anyone here seen that problem?
I tried to post this in that thread, but didn't have access to it....
You can install without unrooting on 1.1 version only. 1.0 and 1.01 need to be unrooted. Once the update is installed, you can use this hack (hamncheese's) to kinda root the new stock froyo version, but it is not a real rooting. As of 4:45pm pst no one has gotten a working root for the new 1.2 version. Give it a couple of days and they will have a method to totally root the nook on the new version. Or, you can run dual boot and be happy for the time being until they get the new root patch.
......
I probably should have been clearer.. my bad.. I did try hamncheese's kinda root, but it didn't look like it worked.

You and me both.......... LOL I d give it a couple of days maybe tomorrow they will have the root patch figured out... Tell you wife it has been only 24 hours......... XDA Devs are fast but sheesh....... they need a little time......
I was unable to do this. It attempted to install, then rebooted, then attempted installation, then rebooted... I unrooted, did a full restore and allowed the update. Not so impressed to be honest with the stock Froyo. Seriously considering going back to rooted 1.1.
Read the thread, it sure does not work hope someone comes up with an answer. Thanks
Just got my Nook and had it updated in the store. The guy says, "it should have lots of other apps plus Angry Birds".
Well, it is 1.2, but no apps and no Angry Birds... Figures.
I too hope someone gets 1.2 Root-able soon.
I sideloaded 1.2 and in the "shop" section, you can "buy" Angry Birds. It's $2.99. Its not RIO or Seasons but it is Angry Birds so maybe you can appease the wife until a root is released. I downloaded it (bought it) and it works great! Ken
anyone know when an new auto-root might be out?
Should be very soon. They got the market working in the manual root.

I know some say the market works but I am still having trouble with it. I cannot seem to install anything. I click the app to download and install, it "starts" the download but the progress bar doesnt fill. Then it suddenly fills, says installing, then dumps me back to the app's description page, with nothing installed. It reports that the "download unsuccessful" so I repeat the install again...no change
I am tempted to go back to 1.1 since 1.2 doesnt offer me anything new unless rooted....

yep. In that case I either get "download unsuccessful" or "installation failed"
need an autorooter
I have tried almost everything to root my 1.2 and am getting nowhere. I am a newbie but successfully rooted. bricked and wiped using instructions and a lot of head time. Just can't get my head arround it this time. I need to root so I can get the NetFlix app running. Thanks guys for your hard work.

Forget about running netflix unless you are willing to flash the cyanogen rom. There are settings that you simply cannot change (at this time) without switching to a different rom. I dont know what to tell you other than to follow the directions others have already posted. The problem with the cyanogen rom is that it does not put the nook to sleep properly when the screen is turned off, so the battery life drains like a leaky faucet. But, I think they have finally started to figure that out so I think that it should be added to one of the next iterations. Once it does, I will happily switch over to using that rom, especially now that the nook app allows magazines etc.
UPDATE ON FAILED INSTALLS: Turns out that only SOME applications do not install correctly, I have been able to install others from the android market place and amazon market place. Angry birds (any version) is one that will NOT install. Any tips? I have definitely used an sd card properly with no change.

That is not correct; with rooted stock 1.2 it is quite simple (especially with Root Explorer).
As for installing Angry Birds, if you are on rooted stock 1.2, try downloading it WITHOUT the SD card mounted.
interesting
Interesting, I will try to enable netflix by changing the file using this method:
http://reviewhorizon.com/2011/05/how-to-watch-netflix-on-nook-color/
I had read a post that mentioned I needed to use ES File explorer to access the file. ES File explorer didnt want to cooperate and complained about my rom, and i figured I need to be running a different rom.
As for the angry birds, I have tried installing with and without the sd card and not had any luck.

when you first install an app, it should ask you what you want to install it with. One option is "Android Package Installer" and that's the one you want. I chose the other one the first time around and ended up restoring and rechoosing. The other package installer (i think it's called nook something or other) does not allow you to select the permissions for the program, and thus, will not install the applications properly.
To test and see if that is the issue, try to install an app... if it comes up with the permissions for the app upon install, then that is probably not the issue. On the other hand, if it immediately just says failed, then you may have chosen the wrong package installer.
also,
For problems with large file install errors, such as angry birds, try installing the kernel in the this thread... that's what worked for me. Alternatively, if you want to install angry birds, etc, then you can copy the apk over to internal memory, take the sd card out, and then install it. (this kernel makes that unnecessary though)
Rooting nook is easy when using the CM7 Mod. You can get the market working with out problem and would be able to run most application and games. I had raging thunder 2 running with out problem.
The thing that I don't like on it is that, CM7's replacement of the stock softkeys (navigation buttons on the buttom) seems to be designed for mobile phones as they are small buttons.
So i unrooted my nook but would be trying this link and see what i can get:

[How To] rooted B&N (1.3) with market access working .... no really.....it's working.

[How To] rooted B&N (1.3) with market access working .... no really.....it's working.
My goal - a rooted 1.3 stock device that had full market access back the way 1.2 worked w/ market prior to the update.
I'll preface this by saying I've tried nearly everything from almost every post in XDA in the last month, but I still had no market access and had to side-load all my apks. I get the feeling that there are quite a few of us that tried manulNooter and various forms of tweaks but are still w/out market access so it is for us that I write this.
I read this today and with a slight tweaking of the steps, I now have ROCK SOLID full market access on the first try.
I'll flat out say that all of the work can be chalked up to other people's time and effort, it's only the steps that worked for me I'm outlining here.
Beforehand:
Make sure you have a bootable CWM card (linky)
Make sure you have updates 4.6.18 and 4.6.16a.
Get the B&N 1.3 update here since you're going to revert your NC back to stock
START:
1) Before updating to 1.3 firmware you are required to do a complete wipe (which requires an aborted power-up [simply hold power button down during the launch process] 8 times in a row - or MUCH easier: the following command using adbWirless ).
adb shell
echo -n -e "\x08\x00\x00\x00" > /rom/devconf/BootCnt
reboot
Click to collapse
2) I waited for the whole B&N setup after the wipe and I went through the steps of registering the device to my B&N account, then I did a factory reset at the "Erase and Deregister the device". It relaunches B&N one more time. After restarting I simply shut down the device before registering it again.
3) I then plugged in my Nook via. USB cable to my PC. I copied the 1.3 update to the root folder of the NC via. the USB cable. You can obtain the 1.3 update here if you didn't earlier.
4) I unplugged the USB. After 2 min. the NC recognized the update, and it did it automatically. It went through a full boot and I then shut down the NC.
5) I put in my CMW SD card with 4.6.18 and 4.6.16a on it. I then plugged in my USB cable into my Nook again to force the launch of CMW
6) In the CMW backup menu, I launched from zip file the 4.6.18, then right afterwards, the 4.6.16a nooters.
7) I shut down the NC, removed the CMW card, and did a regular launch.
8) I chose ZEAM launcher as default
9) I went into ROM manager and fixed permissions.
10) I went into the Market, signed in, and accepted the info, and saw the full, beautiful market populate and I'm good to go.
Hopefully this is a fix that works for everybody.....
(and yes - I know there's a separate thread on how to re-root after 1.3, but it's more of a troubleshooting thread at this point and frankly there's SO much conflicting info. in there I thought it prudent to start a new thread)

Thks - yes - 4.5.18 - and fwiw, while I was super-happy about the progress - I turned off the NC last night and on launch this morning I'm stuck in a boot loop at the NC logo. Looks like I'm moving to CM7 and use the LCD density method to get market access. SO disappointing.

Thanks for giving this a shot and posting your experience. I am hoping that one of the smart developer types will work on a Manualnooter (let's say 4.7.0) that will take us from stock 1.3 to root with a fully functional Market. Please, I know you are out there.
By the way, if you load CM7 with a -200 nightly or later then you will not need the LCD density fix as it has already been incorporated. Happy hunting!

Did you update flash? Thats what causes the loop, I had the same thing happen to me and had to start again from scratch. Make sure you don't update flash through the market or this will happen again.

I decided to revert to stock and every time I turned my nook off, there was no return. Every time I reflashed, after I nootered I updated everything from the market. I spent 2 hours trying to find the reason as to why I kept getting bootloops.
This fixed it.

There is a fix to allow updated flash, can't remember which thread but after going through it I have updated to flash v11 without issue. I also got the (latest) market working by going into titanium backup and doing a data wipe of the market app.
Well, I followed all the given instructions, even bobzdar's method after reflashing for the 5th time. I still cannot get full market access. Even amazon market cuts me off. I've come to the conclusion that my only solution will be to move on to cm7. Honestly though, I prefer the stock rom over cm7.
All I want is cut the rope, and boat browser. Is that too much to ask for? lol

For whatever reason, the market took a while to load the first time, but now it works whenever I go into it. Try opening it up and doing a search for something and see what happens. I did a search for flash after running the flash fix to go right to the updated v11 and it took 30 seconds to a minute for the search to go through, but once it did the market has worked normally since. It was odd, but what kicked the whole thing off was doing the data wipe in titanium backup and all of a sudden it auto updated flash and a few other things (indicating market was working), which necessitated doing the flash fix through CWM etc. Now everything is working properly, hopefully it's just working slowly like it was for me and you just have to kind of kick start it by doing a search.
Thanks for the detailed steps, and to bobzdar for his tips. I too was having the "Nook Col" problem even after having done the flash trick, so I started all over and all is working...
EXCEPT, now I can't download my B&N books. I get this error: "Unable to Download: Internal error: Exception executing the command".
I did update superuser among other things, not sure if that made any difference. It won't let me install the Nook app thru the Market, either.
Any suggestions? I'd like to read my books and would prefer NOT to do this all over again LOL.

Already in the library. I have about 12 and can't dl any of them. Haven't tried to buy a new book yet, but I doubt that will work either.
It's frustrating because I was w/o the Nook for several days, did all this stuff and it works well other than this and limited market apps which I can live with.
I may have to go thru the whole process again and make sure I dl everything before I apply the hacks.

LG Revolution root help

Hello everyone. I know I'm a noob, but am hoping I can get some help anyway. Tried searching and not too many people are having the same problem, so I started a new thread.
Anyway, I used the one click root found in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348557
( I tried to post in that thread, but can't since I don't have 10 posts )
I'm new to hacking and I'll be honest. I only wanted to root my phone so I could use wireless tether, and then use Titanium Backup to freeze a lot of the bloatware on the phone. I have no desire to install a different ROM. I'm happy with the one it has, and happy to take the updates Verizon pushes. Everything was good until the latest update came through. When it downloaded, and rebooted, instead of updating, it booted in clockwork mod recovery. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get the update to go through.
So I settled on never updating again and froze the updater to prevent my phone from trying to update and going to CMR at random times. About 4 days later, my bluetooth quit working. Couldn't figure out why. Thought I was going to have to send it in for warranty work, so I tried to undo all the mods. I unfroze everything, and then hit the one click unroot button. It said it worked. Problem is, superuser is still installed with no way to uninstall.
My first question is this: How do I get superuser gone so my phone can be back to factory so they'll never know it was rooted?
Next I tried to go ahead and get the update since the unrooting process was supposed to have reinstalled stock recovery. Well, it didn't. I still ended up booting up into CMR again. STILL can't update even after unrooting. Double checked, and wireless tether and Titanium backup both say "no root". On a whim, I try the blue tooth and guess what. It worked. May not need to send the phone off for warranty work after all.
So my second question is this: Would freezing the updater cause the blue tooth to stop working? If so, how can I either keep it working or stop the updates without freezing the updater? It's like I have to choose between having blue tooth or having my phone randomly boot into CMR whenever it tries to update.
Third question, pertaining specifically to the one click root I linked to above: How can I get rid of the CMR? Is it possible to root the phone without installing CMR? If I can get it unrooted back to factory ( without superuser or CMR ), how can I root it again so that it doesn't install CMR and keeps the stock one?
I know this is a lot of question and I'm a noob, but I'm a noob willing to learn. If this problem has been encountered before, I apologize in advnace for not finding the appropriate thread. I tried.
updater app
Yes freezing the software update app will cause your Bluetooth to stop working. I used a app called Gemini app manager to go change the permissions of the software update app so it did not have any permissions to do anything. I have not been bothered with update prompts since.

There's no need. MTMichaelson has come up with a easy way to keep your phone rooted during the upgrade from ZV7 to ZV8.

Yes it will. Several people have reported this in different threads. I'm not sure of a way around this, but I think others might have a way around it. If you follow MT's method to keep root during the upgrade, you want have to worry about it!

If I can get it unrooted back to factory ( without superuser or CMR ), how can I root it again so that it doesn't install CMR and keeps the stock one?

There's no need to do this either since you can keep root and upgrade.
Here's what you need to do.
1) Go here and root your phone again.
2) Go here to upgrade to ZV8 while keeping root. There's also a method for reinstalling CWM as the upgrade will remove it.
This will: keep your root, get you upgraded, fix your bluetooth and keep CWM.
Good luck!

Ah, thanks. I'll post again to update how that went. Though, I'd like to keep the stock recovery. I'll try to do it without CWM.

Yes freezing the software update app will cause your Bluetooth to stop working. I used a app called Gemini app manager to go change the permissions of the software update app so it did not have any permissions to do anything. I have not been bothered with update prompts since.

How did you change permissions in Gemini? I turned off all the autorun features and was able to get Bluetooth working but I didn't see anything about permissions in the settings. I could have missed it though being at work and all. Will turning off all the autorun features of the Software Update app stop it from trying to download the update in the middle of the night when I'm not looking like it sounds like it should?
In gemeni select block app. It's the same as freezing in titanium backup.

[Q] Accidently deleted pictures

I accidently deleted a folder containing photos, I tried downloading DiskDigger, Undelete and Hexamob...all for root which I have. When I opened them they ask for root and I allow, then you are supposed to be able to choose which device you want, but there is nothing there. It says if there isn't anything there than you don't have root...but this seems to be a recurring problem after I updated my D4 using the OTA update, that even though I am rooted, a lot of the programs do not work anymore.
Does anybody know of a way I can attempt to recover those pictures I accidetly deleted??!

Did you use something like rootkeeper when you took the OTA? If not then the OTA to ICS probably caused you to lose root. You'll need to root your phone again.

I don't think you have root if most of your programs that required root in GB no longer work after you upgraded to ICS. You need to use OTA Rootkeepr to keep root after an upgrade. So your only choice now is to root and to run those programs to try to recover the photos.
I actually flashed back to orig non-root GB before I updated because I had changed too many things and OTA would fail. I used the droid for win tool and flashed GB system to my phone then went to settings system and got the OTA. After that I rooted. since then most root programs work like rom toolbox, titanium backup for root, root explorer etc. but some programs just don't work anymore, like Droidsheep or Wireless Tether, I believe they just aren't compatable with ICS...I know that a lot of people on google play are saying that after they did their ota wireless tether would not work anymore..everything works on it except it won't switch into AD-HOC mode , which is what I'm guessing changed in the OTA.
I tried using some recovery program for mac but it didn't work, right now I'm downloading riplinux and a couple other recovery distros. since the files were on my removable sd card I am just going to plug it in and try and recover from a computer....does any one have any methods that work best?
When you pull the files off your SD card let me know which program worked for ya... please and thank you
