[Q] Which sub-forum? Incredible 2? - HTC Incredible S

Greetings -
Alright, I am INCREDIBLY confused.
I have an HTC Droid Incredible 2 on Verizon in the USA.
(Not yet rooted, in a few days I will)
I have read conflicting answers, and wish to settle this once and for all.
Do posts regarding the Incredible 2 (not "S", the twin brother) belong in the original HTC Incredible sub-forum or in the Incredible S sub-forum?
While the two devices, Incredible 2 and the European/Asian twin, Incredible S, are almost identical, there are some minor differences such as CDMA and another partition on the Incredible 2. Therefore, (from what I understand) development, such as ROMs, cannot be used for the twin device. There seems to be tons of development on the Incredible S...but not on the Incredible 2
Off topic, but if you know of a complete, fully functioning Sense 3.0 ROM for Incredible 2, please let me know.
Also, if someone is willing to take the time to make sure that I am doing the whole procedure (S-OFF with AlphaRevX Open Public Beta, and root, flash ClockworkMod, recovery, etc) correctly, PM me. Yes, I know there are dozens of guides, but it would help with my confidence in rooting. I am not a complete noob, I know how to use a computer, and once I get it I should be fine....
Thanks,
[::AP::]

Posts regarding the Droid Incredible 2 belong in the Droid Incredible 2 forum. There's a sub-forum dedicated to that device.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1138
Likewise, the Incredible and Incredible S belong in their respective dedicated forums.
Hopefully I'm understanding your question correctly.

Woooooow. I feel so stupid.
Thanks for taking the time to post that - in your eyes I must look lazy, stupid, etc
(Excuse: Used CTRL+F to search for "HTC Incredible..." not "Verizon..." on the main page to find sub-forum.)
Anyways thanks. This can be closed, and/or deleted. Serves no use, not even for archival purposes.
[::AP::]

Of course not, different forums have different layouts and it takes a little while to get used to. We were all new at one point or another.
Enjoy your stay at XDA!

New to DX? LOOK HERE FIRST / Help Build DX WIKI Together

EDIT: 09/09/2010
The Wiki is comming along nicely, a thank you is in order to everyone who contributed. Of course it can always be improved, as such I am keeping the original post below. While we still don't have a great following for the DX on XDA we at least have a nice and organized page in which you can find links to the major breakthroughs and how-to's. If you are new to the DX and are looking for a place to begin, thanks to the fine people on this forum the XDA Droid X WIKI (Found Here) is a great place to begin
As new things are discovered for the Droid X we encourage you to add them to the Droid X WIKI, it can always be removed later if need be. It is a great start however. Thank You all, and good work.
From Sleuth255: Just a quick (slightly off topic) note to also say that XDA mods are here to help. The basis of XDA-developers is after all, development, and it is within device specific development forums such as this that all the magic happens. So here is my promise to all Droid X/Android XDA developers using the facilities of this forum: If you need help keeping a development thread "on topic", PM me and I'll place XDA's cosmic moderating powers at your disposal. Obviously, there's give and take here; we're a community based on idea sharing after all, but the point remains: Let's work together to make the Dx something truly amazing.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have more reading to do so I can further acquire "mad Dx/Android skills" without having to resort to noob tactics.
Original Post:
So I have just come from my Droid Incredible... Yesterday as a matter of fact... And could not help but notice the complete lack of organization of all significant breakthroughs for the Droid X. As well as a lack of anything at all in the WIKI.
It actual made me miss the XDA Droid Incredible forum, which was a joke in comparison to the XDA Droid (original) forum... Point being it doesn't say a lot for our Droid X Forum...
SO! I figured I would put out a request to get this forum a bit more organized, even if that means doing so through the XDA Droid X wiki. At least here we can place links to the most significant breakthroughs, etc. I will start working on it myself as soon as I locate some of the more important breakthroughs, such as root, bootloader, Froyo upgrade and downgrade, and any others.
Find the Droid X WIKI Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=File:Motorola_Droid_X.png
I invite everyone to help, after all not everyone was reading the forum from the start, and just for kicks some time, try searching "root" on any of these forums, you might as well just start scrolling through the pages without searching, because you'll get about the same number of results...
EDIT: So I have decided it is not the lack of effort for this forum as much as the number of occupants. Even the Droid Incredible Development forum (which is considered to be a phone lacking development backing) is being viewed by around 200 people at the moment of writing this. Ours (DX Development) currently only has 20 occupants... I have yet to see a phone in which XDA was not the main forum used for communication, perhaps this is the first?...

You are correct.. I am sad as well coming from the HTC touch where the XDA following was huge...
There isn't so much love for the X here on XDA and you are not alone in hoping it changes!
I'll help out when I get back in town tonight. This place is not user friendly.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
**EDIT** - I just updated it with some standard info... more will come soon.
BUMP!!!
This thread needs to be stickied!!!
Yeah I agree... Seems like a popular enough phone, apparently not with the devs though. So, I have decided to go ahead and start building my own rom. My first theme is almost done too...

Ill give a helping hand...
I agree, with everyone who has posted so far. I'm bummed that there aren't people flooding these X forums... I'm not great at development or anything, but have done a decent amount of information compiling for the Wiki at the server lab I manage, and would be willing to help contribute in any way I can!
Agreed.
I usually lurk around in XDA, but it is the first place I check out DX info.
I'll help with whatever I can.
NOOB would love to help
Although I am not new to XDA forums, ( I owe my sanity to you guys for getting me through some of the hairy spots in the WinMo days), I am totally new to Android. I started with the HTC Aria, then got tired of AT&T's BS, so I went to Verizon (where I now have 3G in my home!!). I started there with the Droid 2 but I wanted a better screen and the extra memory so I just picked up my Droid X (after waiting 3 weeks) today. I'm excited, but I know that there are deficiencies - such as no update yet for the DX.
I don't know what I can do to help, but I've always learned that the best way to get acquainted with something is to sometimes just dive in with both feet. I'm just a lowly System Admin Manager for an IT company. DROID X excites me and we truly do need to bring in whatever is needed to get our membership to a level that's worthy of Moto's 'flagship' phone.
Just let me know what I can do to help and I'm there - as I said, I owe you guys big time.
Maraming salamat (many thanks),
Miguel
Now that this is stickied... you should change the title and first post to something along the lines of: "Look Here First" "New to the Droid X" "Noob ALERT!!"
Lol, ok.. maybe not the last one but something similar. Then edit the first post to something explaining the wiki or just the link.
It will help out on confusion in the threads and open ppl eyes to things that are going on and getting lost in the shuffle.
The biggest issue I have seen, is that XDA is an HTC forum, and the Devs dont mess with the Motorolla devices. Other forums have devs that work on the DX and that is where the traffic is. P3Droid, Koush and Birdman have completed the most significant breakthroughs, and they are not a part of this forum. I wish this place had more of a DX following too...for now, I stick with MDW.
Well I just recieved my DX yesterday. Thanks to this great wiki and the people behind it, I was able to root and do some modifying with in the first hour of having my phone, and I didn't have to tear through the forums. Thanks for all of the effort and keep up the good work.

I like MDW alot as well, man, but I DO notice that a good number of posts there will link back to something here in the DX forum on XDA. So, it seems that the higher ups at MDW do at least lurk or contribute here as well.

nice!
after 2 months, I still want to keep my 2.1 OS (in case I want to start some coding on it & 2.1 is a safe version to test on). But I will definitely upgrade to official 2.2 OTA.
btw, is there a list of reasons in the wiki to root & upgrade to 2.2?
Hi! Thanks for getting this wiki and DX forum organized, CaptainTaco and all! I'm relatively new to Android, the DX, and rooting, and all that entails, and was looking for a place to start... and here I am! Have been hearing about XDA for a while, and look forward to learning and contributing as I can!

Welcome aboard. Just make sure you read everything you can before asking a question. I usually ask Google first before I post in a thread. You can also use the hand search feature at the top of the forum.
I say this cause ppl can get pretty heated for threads started asking questions or posting information that has already been answered or giving.
You can always pm me or hit me up on gtalk. A lot of ppl do and I enjoy turning the light bulb on for ppl lol
I've been lurking since I got my new phone, glad to be here. I'm rooted on 2.2 OTA and have learned some about the signed boot loader and latest updates via lurking and searching different forums each day. The wiki looks very complete as far as I can tell, great job!
Thanks for all the work on the Wiki. Great stuff!
I'm coming up to speed on Android/DX now. Very cool platform. I'll be helping more/developing for the Dx soon.
I may not post here much but I try to pay attention and read as often as I can.
P3droid is also a member here as jimmydafish.
Motorola devices will always be second class citizens on this forum...just the way it is.

Rooting The Incredible S

This phone's been out for a while, and we should really figure something out in terms of how to root this. I had a Desire HD and I traded it for this... Without a root, we can't put any roms etc., and we should really try and figure out what we're going to do about the state of the root. Does anyone know if there's been any progress on the S-ON rooting front?
Rooting The Incredible S
waiting!!~~~
Please at least give the forum a vague glance before posting a new topic. There is a thread stickied with almost exactly the same title in the forum which has all the details on what has been tried and failed, what is being worked on and who is working on it

You should really try and look top post that is sticky!

To be honest getting S-off (and thus root) is not a big deal in most places (well many places anyway) any more, since access to XTC clip seems to be wide spread and getting wider every day. I don't think this is a barrier to Inc S development and custom ROMs any more. Just my opinion.

Raider x710a?

hey guys is there any root/roms for this device yet? ive tried searching and havent come up with anything... it all seems to be for the AT&T vivid...
The Raider x710a is the HTC Vivid, at least that's what it says under my battery cover.
Does the Rogers device have the same code?
Root's always been available for Canadian Raiders as your bootloader was unlocked much earlier than ours. custom ROMs are interchangeable by region.
well its actually a bell one, same device but i tried loading the ics official RUU from AT&T and it was a no go?
set sail for fail, another day, another newb
just newb with this device, if you check my threads i use to cook roms for the magic...so stfu

Learn the art of posting on XDA. This should be in general.
You asked for root and ROMs. For you, this has been available for what feels like centuries. Just looking at the dev board would have gotten your answer.
Now you're talking about ICS RUU, which is neither of those. Searching anywhere would have immediately told you that you need an OTA with the new HBOOT and the Canadian carriers have not released that yet!
Ai ya yai, it's no surprise that PG left.
ok so its rooted, and if im corrected there is no ics available to flash?
Yes.

A lot of it flew out the window when PG left. There were so many people who kept asking the same questions over and over, who didn't search nor follow instructions, then proceeding to come here and whine about why their phone/ROM didn't work. PG got fed up. It's part of why the development here is so weak.
This posed question really is no different. I can provide decent responses to good questions and demonstrated competence, but it's immensely tedious to try to respond to the same questions over and over when the answer is readily plastered all over the place.
It was common understanding in the old Captivate forum that one is to search before posting, then post their question. For some reason, the problem wasn't nearly as pronounced there, and all places in which it appeared was in the General section. I feel like the convoluted (by comparison) HTC setup is causing a lot of angst among those new to this, but the information to do things properly is still present on the forums as much as it was before. All people must do is read thoroughly and follow directions. Nobody is responsible for your device except you, so it's your fault if you brick your $500+ phone.

I can understand the intolerance for whiners, but he wasn't whining. I know the history of PG and the reasons he left.
The quick quips telling someone to search really aren't helpful. Maybe they did and it was confusing or they didn't find the answer.
For that matter, if searching is always the response at XDA, we don't need XDA since all of the same answers are available on other websites and can be Googled.
The Internet is free and we can act however we wish. My wish is for a more helpful, less critical culture.

I have been using xda for years, i never post, i do this out of respect for the devs and people who have legit questions in the tread but since i just got my HTC raider last week (i have a G-Nexus as my main device) i started to Rom and ROot this device and i have seen so much anger on these threads, brothers i have the same hate for mundane and stupid questions that can be answered by control -F-, or the search button at the top, i have found a answer to every problem i have had for almost 3 years worth of androids (G1,DEXT,DesireZ,GalaxySVibrant,MOTOAtrix,Xt860,samsung note, galaxy nexus) Just for the love of god please use the search functions that we have at our disposal so that we dont loose DEV's like PG and we continue to make these phones better than they are

I'm not talking about this isolated instance. I'm saying in general. OP didn't whine, but his second question posted a very simple and very common question whose answer is found all over the shop.
Every thread I've read ever since joining XDA has a clear instruction set. Never found any problems, and any unclear bits was usually cleaned up within at most a day. Especially for things that are guided/intuitive like RUU updating or CWM flashing. Anything deviating from that has always had clear and express instructions.
I agree with you on the searching front. It's just that by consequence, XDA is a pinnacle for Android development information and Google's search is not localized to the forum (though it can be forced), nor are all its threads indexed with the latest information on the latest issues, unlike the forum search and its ability to parse posts as they are made. Likewise, most of the information here cannot be found elsewhere unless heavily publicised.
My wish is for XDA's culture to have more autonomy and less incompetence. XDA is more of an instruction manual when it comes to knowing the ins, outs and modifications that you can do to your device.
Anyway, let's end this before it erupts. I am now abandoning this thread.

So you came at XDA-Developers to find help? (Beginners Thread)

So you came at XDA-Developers to find help? Well, this is your thread!
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime"
Hello new user and welcome to XDA-Developers. We are a developer’s forum, with the purpose of development. Our work can be used in several ways, and, we know that sometimes it could help you. So, in order to maintain our forums clean and properly organized maintaining a proper development environment while at the same time to give you a chance to join our forums we created this thread.
This thread is for sensible questions from new or inexpert users. If you think your question may be a little basic for a developer forum then this is the place to ask it.
Here you shall find an atmosphere free of prejudice, where we will try to help you in your problem, answer yourmost basic questions and aid you on troubleshooting your device. We know that learning all the technicalities takes time, however they are necessary in order to interact with us.
Bare in mind that we are not technical support, we do not work for any company or get paid to help, we are just independent developers gathered in a community called XDA-Developers. Therefore all we will do is guide you into troubleshooting your device yourself, but under no circumstance we are abided to do so.
We want you to become the kind of user we see as productiveto a developer’s community, and why not?, to be a developer yourself!
Note to General users:
This is a chance for more advanced users to “give back” at XDA-Developers the knowledge we have gathered together in a decade of development. This is a thread to behave in a tolerant way, taking into consideration that the user posting queries might have never even heard words such as “adb” or “ROM", so, if you are not willing to be helpful, I kindly invite you to browse into another thread.
"Time has changed, Users have changed and so will XDA-Developers"
Moderators will not tolerate "flaming" or "trolling" in this thread as it is specifically provided for those who are still learning the basics.. We will delete and sanction without warning any post that show intention other than to help the new user.
Okay, then, I have a newbie question: can someone explain exactly what "S-Off" means?
Take S-Off for Security Off. With S-Off you can directly write to kernel, bootladers and radio, while S-On devices would need a second device (a PC) to write to those areas. Its like a protection mechanism for us not to brick our phones (at least not as easy).
There is plenty of explanations at our forums if you want t get into technical details or just want another explanation. Just try using the search button in the right top corner of XDA pages, you will be amazed how much you can find .

I'd go on with another newbie question.
If I'm not wrong rooting breaks warranty (in most of the cases at least) but I think (again im not sure) we can reboot our device to factory settings before giving it to technical service to fix its problems.
What happens if the device is not working? Is there an external way to fix the rooted system back to normal?
I am going to go with a NO in that subject.
Although there are plenty of methods that have been successful in several handsets in the past by using third party hardware, it can get complicated even for a advanced users to do so, since it might involve technichal aspects only manufacturers know about.
Normally, these methods are developed and posted here, depeding on the handset, it might be easy or not. Not so many years ago, these methods were as easy as flashing a "untouched" firmware, but lately, manufacturers have been implementing methods to detect if we have touched the bootloader and have increasingly making it harder for developers to break them, thus returning to a "factory untouched" state is getting harder with every new device.
In short, If you want your warranty intact beyond the existence of any doubt, do not root.
And why is my galaxy tab crushing with cm 10 mod with latest gapps. I dont really think it is a noob question.
Guys, please keep your questions device specific.
We can't be discussing Galaxy Tabs here.
Thanks
I have a problem and I'm new here, so I just reply in this topic. I'm sorry for my little English.
I have a HTC One S and I dropped it a few days ago, now the volume down button is dented and I can not use it anymore. Since you can still set te volume by pushing the volume up button and swipe the volume down, i thought it was ok.
Now I wanted to turn my phone off and this is what I've got:
*** LOCKED ***
VLE PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.15.0000
Radio-1.11.50.05.28
OpenDSP-v31.1.0.45.0815
eMMC-boot
Dec 14 2012, 17:10:57:-1
HBOOT
<VOL UP> to previous item
<VOL DOWN. to next item
<POWER> to select item
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
FACTORY RESET
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
IMAGE CRC
SHOW BARCODE
Using the volume up button I can select one of the items, but pressing the powerbutton brings me nothing. I have no idea what to do or how I can fix this.
Please help!
I see this is the wrong topic but I am unable to delete this message, I'm sorry.
Well, it is a hardware fault since its broken, so not much we can help you here. Try maybe reading the HTC One S specific forums to find a workaround, but honestly, you better replace the handset.
I have two good question. What is the difference between the HTC One developer edition and the regular one (ha).
What I've seen made it look you would struggle with putting roms on the regular one.
Also, how soon is the one likely to have roms and people putting the latest android on it (like pure nexus jelly bean)? Like a couple months, a year?
Thanks for your help

The difference of the Developer Edition and regular one is that it is already S-Off, unlocked bootloader(no need to go to HTC dev) and has 64GB storage. And it comes only on one variant which is a US LTE type. So LTE won't work on Europe or Asia.
Regarding AOSP(pure nexus ROM) probably less than a month after the release of kernel source code by HTC on which I dunno when it would come.
So this will be my first non-nexus device. Will there be custom roms that will be up to date with the latest version of Android so I don't have to wait for HTC? If so, how will their stability be?

Give it time and there will be. I'm sure they'll be stable enough when released anyway.
I'm also coming from a Nexus and is a first for me to be getting a HTC.
It is possible to use the EU version of the HTC One in the US? I'm debating between the developer version and the EU since I'm located in the US (and want an unlocked bootloader), but it looks like the EU version would work on AT&T?
HSPA/WCDMA:
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE:

LTE:

US (AT&T): 700/850/AWS/1900 MHz

Yeah it looks like it, but, if you want an unlocked bootloader, developers edition should be your choice (that is what I would do)

Hi naeembakakheil.
First thing you might want to do when looking for firmwares for your mobile device, is look in the correct section. Try here for your device specific info.
Second, please browse through those forums, read the OP of each thread which includes the description of the ROM you are about to flash, and then, read through the replies your fellow users have left to see their impressions, you can usually find all the help you need by reading. This would be a good place to start. If you still have any doubts, then ask in the appropriate thread. If after extensive search you still do not find the appropriate answer to your question, then ask in the Q&A forum of the device (although if you do know how to search, you will hardly ever need to open a new thread, almost every question is already answered).
What you must not do ever is.....ask without reading or even worst, read the incorrect information (as in not your phone's forum), you could easily break your device useless by making that mistake.
When can we expect 4.2 ROMs for the HTC One?

No one can possibly tell you that. As a matter of fact, XDA was founded because of the same queries arouse between members...until they started building themselves. So, I kindly invite you to join our developer communitty and build yourself a 4.2 or at least get invokved in the process.
I wouldnt recommend coming to xda with expectations of the arrival of something, since it can be a very long and boring time . Its best to be involved in the making of things here at xda, that way I guarantee you will not get bored and eventually, you will get what you want.

I am a long time iOS user who recently switched to Windows Phone 8. Seeing how customizable Android is, I am thinking of making the jump soon. I have a lot of things to learn about this wonderful operating system, which is why I joined XDA
What goes into making a custom ROM? Do we need any specific files/firmwares/kernels/drivers from HTC to make a 4.2 ROM? Are there not any devs working on 4.2 ROMs for the One?

Are Vivid, Raider, Velocity compatible in terms of ROM's?

I see the forum titled "HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity" but all the subforums mention Vivid only which led me to this question since after some time searching inside the forum the answer still isn't clear to me. I hope this topic can be of use to others.
Thanks in advance.
They are interchangeable for everything but RUU's unless you are s-off with supercid

Can you explain it without technical jargon? Thank you.
No... That's as simple as it gets...
And... If you're not sure what those terms mean... You have some reading to do before you start flashing your phone...

I have been flashing my phones for years, I was thinking of buying and HTC but apparently everyone here is so kind that I already moved on with the idea. Of course it makes a lot of sense to make the important information for HTC beginners (because, after all, you're mentioning things HTC-specific since this isn't how all the other brands work) spread across dozens of posts in dozens of threads instead of in one simple place, for someone to do the reading you suggest. Best regards

I've been there, please quote the place where my question was answered and the terms "RUU's", "s-off" and supercid are explained.

It isn't xda-usegoogle as well. With your reasoning, XDA would serve nothing since you could probably find the same content somewhere else using google.
The fact is that the information just isn't there and me, as many people, probably will leave the idea of buying such a device if they can't find that kind of information without searching for days.
If your intention is not to share knowledge, you have no place in a forum like this.
I will try to help, because the OP asked the questions pretty clearly and politely (and wasn't like some of the posts on here - "hurrr how do i root my phone, tell me now kthx"). I also agree that having info scattered everywhere is not the easiest for people to navigate. And let's face it - not every post in this forum is crystal clear for all. Once the info/methods/files have been established, what is the harm in trying to put it all together? I enjoy the hunt for the information - That's why I've kept a file/info archive for every phone I've messed with.
Custom ROMs should work between all 3 (Vivid/Raider/Holiday). I don't believe any custom roms have been made specifically for one model.
RUU's will not. An RUU is a stock rom. It contains all of the stock partitions like radio, system, etc.). It pretty much returns a phone to stock (based on whatever carrier it is for, I believe - so carrier bloatware will be included). I believe that if you have unlocked the bootloader (for whatever reason), an RUU will refuse to flash. The bootloader will need to be re-locked in order for you to be able to flash the RUU.
When the RUU is run, it checks the "CID" of your phone. If your "CID" doesn't match the RUU , it will likely refuse to flash. You probably don't want to flash random RUU's to your phone anyway. But if you live on the edge you can change the CID of your phone. I think it's like... 1111111 or something. This is called the "SuperCID" - any Vivid/Raider/Holiday RUU will flash. At your own risk, of course! I remember doing SuperCID on my Bell HTC Raider, so I could flash the Rogers RUU to it. There are barely any differences between our 2 main carriers in Canada, so it flashed and worked fine for me.
To change your CID - I believe you will have to have the ultimate access to your phone (meaning, S-OFF your phone). Your phone will be open to flashing pretty much any code to any partition, and it will be easy to brick if you flash something inappropriate.

THANK YOU! Finally someone with good judgement. I don't usually do this but since you took the time to elaborate such a clear and thought through answer I'd like to take some time to thank you in writing. I did not like the way the thread was going, in fact I regret the spam created and fear that it won't promote the very useful content you have just provided. I'll try to get in touch with staff to try and get this done and in the meantime if you're more familiar with the process I encourage you to do the same, thanking you in advance for that aswell. I hope the community can benefit from threads like this and encourage everyone to share and clarify other terms if they feel like so.
Cheers!

While you have been decent about your inquire, you are incorrect on your assumption of XDA.
This was created as a Development site. While over time we have added sections such as Q&A, it has never been based on answering users questions.
BTW, when I searched Google this was the second hit using the criteria of your OP
Now that this has been answered. I have close the thread.
