I roooted my galaxy s some months ago to apply the one click lag fix (Super One Click, v1.6 i think, tho not sure about the version number).
I have since removed the lag-fix and unrooted. The whole process completed without any problems. However, when i tried to update to Gingerbread, it tells me my software version cannot be updated.
When i checked the software details on the phone it has the Kernal as 2.6.32.9 [email protected]8#1
Im pretty sure this still identifies the phone as being rooted.
I tried rooting and unrooting again (this time using v1.9), as before the whole process completed as it should, but nothing has changed on the phone.
I understand that if I flashed the firmware, it would remove the rooting, but would prefer to avoid this route if possible.
The phone is running stock froyo - PDA:JP7 / PHONE: JP3 / CSC: JP5 (TMU)
Any advice on this would be appreciated

Flashed again!
OK, I have flashed with 3-file JPU, then flashed single file JPY. But still showing the rooted Kernal.
Can anyone help me find a stock kernal to download, as I have had no joy myself.
Samfirmware.com
Or,
This will unroot your device.

Thanks, but the firmwares I used to flash are from samfirmware. Com
I did check the link but it states to only use that method to unroot if you have rooted with their method also

Actually the bolded line doesn't indicate whether you're rooted or not. Once you have flash a stock rom via Odin, you're good to go without any root access.
Sorry if I'm being a bit dim... but what holder line?
I'm pretty certain the phone is no longer rooted, but as long as it still has this root kernel on it Kies won't allow it to update.

Hi,
I got a Galaxy S captivate today from the US (I am from India). It was SIM locked. Then I read though the ways sim unlock, most required rooting. So it started off from there, I wanted to root using Odin, but it was held up in the middle and I was into recovery mode. I read through the forums further and tried to flash it back to stock ROM (multiple times - failing at different stages of the Odin). Now I am able to get into the "Downloading Do Not turn off target".
Even now in the Download mode I am able to use Odin to flash back to Stock Rom, but I keep getting stuck in "Sbl.bin" phase.
I do not want to pursue further and hard brick (I do not know if I had already did). I would request some of the members here to please please help me out of my situation. Do not want my new phone to be bricked.
Fingers crossed, expecting a positive response from you guys - please help me out.
Thanks,
Sid
Hey Sid,
I would suggest downloading an Odin one-click if you are having trouble. http://www.mediafire.com/?5rcofbzusoor6mv
Just open odin without your phone connected to usb.
Plug your phone into USB.
Click the One-Click button.
Thanks for your reply. I had already tried many Odin one click ROMs - 2.3.3, 2.3.5 and even a stock Rom because of recommendations from various threads. All get stuck at one stage or the other. I haven't tried this one though. Given what I said, would you like me to try this one too?

It is a place to start. Try it and let me know how it goes.
Sure, will try and post how it went. Download speeds are a little slow here, will take some time to update.
Thanks,
Sid.
Got stuck in boot.bin
Hi,
Got stuck in different stages of Odin. Finally I changed the USB cable to a cable from Motorola Bionic, it went like a charm..
Cannot thank you enough for providing the ROM and asking me to try again!! BIG BIG THANKS.
Now I have an AT&T handset with Rogers ROM in it, hope that shouldn't cause any problems in the future. I am even afraid of asking should I try flashing a AT&T ROM, I would be very hesitant.
Now coming to rooting the phone, I tried Superoneclick, it got stuck in the "shell rooting device....- step#5". I tried only once, I do not want to keep messing around this time. I tried an Indian SIM, asks for a Network unlock code - so guess it is not SIM unlocked as well.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Sid
PS: Title was drafted during my failed attempts , finally just before posting tried with my Bionic cable.

Thanks for your reply. To use the unlock app the phone should be rooted and that is where I am facing the issue. Superoneclick gets stuck in step7 - trying to connect to the device.

Rooted. Stuck with Sim lock.
Rooting went smoothly. Thank You!!
But I am stuck with SIM lock. Samsung_S unlock does not seem to work,.
Would the problem be because I flashed a Rogers ROM in a AT&T set?

That may be the problem. U could try and flash back to android 2.2 and then unlock and then flash whatever. Because once it is unlocked it will continue to be unlocked.
There is a Master Collection of Stock One Clicks available to choose from in the Dev forum. It is a stickied thread.

Any problem less AT&T ROMs
Any suggestions? Any problem less AT&T Odin one click ROM?
Not that I can not search for one in this forum, earlier I ended up in this mess by doing so. Any suggestions on any working clean Odin one click AT&T ROMs? Would favour 2.3 versions.
Thanks,
Sid
Have you ever tried heimdall one click. Works like charm. Will upload it for you tomorrow. Us it and flash back to stock gb. Then just follow the root steps given on the captivate wiki forum. Check for the link on cyanogen website for root . This again uses heimdall

Haven't tried heimdall yet. Will try and let you know how it went!
Thanks for your help!
Regards,
Sid.
Thanks for all your responses and help.
Heimdall one click never got past the driver installation prompt. Kept repeating every time. May be it is again due to the Rogers ROM flashed, not sure. For a while the phone was stuck in the Downloading mode, but managed to get out of it.
Anyways, I purchased an unlock code from ebay and managed to unlock the phone. Now it is unlocked and works on the Indian GSM carriers.
Once again thanks for all your help, suggestions and time.
Thank You!
Sid
A friend tried messin around with his tab when he doesnt even know how to jailbreak an iphone 3g... The tab wouldnt even boot past the Samsung Galaxy Tab screen, but it was able to get to download mode... I used a guide to update it to gingerbread using odin, and everything went well! I opened odin, selected PIT and chose the P1_add_hidden.pit file, then i selected PDA and chose the P1000NVFJP6_P1000NUBJP3_P1000NUUBJPB_HOME.tar.md5 file, and i made sure i checked Re-Partition, Auto Reboot, F. Reset Time, Phone EFS Clear and Phone Bootloader Update.. everything went well, but on recovery it was unable to update the systemfile.. but everything else on recovery updated and installed fine! as it reboots, it gets stuck in the bootanimation in the part it says Samsung glowing.. did i do something wrong? how can i fix this? I am still able to get to recovery and download mode fine..
Use overcome method like described here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1855591
Btw, you should not have checked Clear Efs.
The replace bootloader too.
And best to use Odin 1.7 included in the gb stock safe in that link I give you.

thanks! will check this out now!
Why do some people think its rational to use absolutely ridiculous titles like "hlp plz" etc etc??
Please use common sense and use descriptive titles, ie a short title that describes your topic for people browsing the forum. "help plz" does not describe your topic in absolutely any way other then somebody using a completely generic title.

You a describing your friend to be a noob. Why are you yourself a developer? And do you even know the hard work required to develop a jailbreak for the first time? So don't talk about others' ignorance.

Hello!
I've been searching the web and this site for hours with no luck. Every single root I come across is no longer working, has a cracked link, is for the wrong firmware/model and other such issues. I've tried to flash Kernel with Odin but I can't find any working links for that either. So I've made an account and am hoping to get some help! Sorry for being a noob.
I am on the Rogers network. I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate I896. I'm running Gingerbread 2.3.3.
If anyone could help me out I would seriously appreciate it!
There are stickies and many great guides all over the forum that show you how. If you read on, you will see that this question has been asked a lot and is always given the same answer.

Download and run SuperOneClick Root (You'll find it on XDA). It should root your device.

I've looked at that, it's not for my phone model.

I have looked at quite a few of them and have not been able to find any that still work. Most are from 2010-2011 when the phone came out and don't work with the upgrade or have been taken down. As I said in the first post. If you could link me to one you know works with my model and firmware and is still functioning I would appreciate it.
As stated above...use SuperOneClick to get Root. It works. There are many threads in the Q & A forum that have covered this. A quick search will show this. The i897 Captivate and i896 are pretty much the same phone.
