[Q] Unsigned update - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been trying to flash my rooted captivate with 2.2, build FROYO.UCKB1. I have been trying for hours to flash my device to 2.3.4 (cyanogenmod), but each time have been stumped. The issue I run in to is unsigned updates being disallowed. I have found the pages regarding a resolution, but when trying to copy files to the system.bin folder using root manager I am told I cannot access. I have superuser permissions allowed for root manager, but am still getting this error. Please, someone help. I have never had this much problem when flashing my device before, but this time I am getting stumped!
Thanks!

make sure you click the mount r/w at the top to allow you to change/re-write files in root exporer.
or you could just flash back to stock 2.1 and avoid the problem entirely. find Odin3 1 click to flash 2.1

[Q] Rooting Problem on Samsung Captivate Android 2.2 I987UCJI6 with Recovery <3e>
Hi ALL,
Here's the problem I have been having. I just bought and Samsung Captivate that had android 2.1 I987UCJH7 which I was able to root with no problem with OCLF App from the market. After upgrading to android 2.2 I987UCJI6 I tried it again and it would not work. I looked at app and it says it only works on Recovery <2e> for android 2.1 & 2.2. This made me curious so I looked at my recovery and it updated to Recovery <3e>. So I looked around and tried a couple of the different root updates that are on different threads on this site and non of them work. So question is, What is the right way to root android 2.2 I987UCJI6 with Recovery <3e> on it? If you can provide me with the correct download files and instructions that would be great! Please and Thank You!
Thanks I.I.
You can't. You need 2e recovery as far as I know, or at least until the source is released. You've upgraded to a leaked ROM that doesn't have everything set up perfectly yet.
That said, you can swap out the 3e kernel for a 2e one, then root, then swap back in your stock kernel (3e).
DesignGears's wiki on Ponack explains it.
Or you can just install Cognition like the rest of with a rooted captivate ROM less work....

Ok. so it says " This .zip file has everything needed" blah blah.. where is this .zip file???
#1 I would recommend ditching the oclf (ryans). Plus that app has lost its ability to root you due to terms and conditions of the market....i used one click super root to root my cappy. Have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Thank you! That program worked. I had to do the Shell root first, though, otherwise it goes into that loop error. But after click the shell root button, it passed, then I clicked the root button, all good. Finally hit the allow non market apps button, and installed my first non market ap.. that app just doesnt work..
But thank you! i'm all set now.
no prob! enjoy
<3e> problem?
I flashed 2.2 ji6 no problem, also rooted no problem with super 1 click. Problem I have now is trying to flash pheonix 3.5. ROM Manager wont install from sd. It goes into downloading mode but fails to install. Is this because of the <3e> recovery? How do I fix it?
Help would be much appreciated, thanks!

[Q] Help with rooted N1 wont take OTA 2.2.1 update

Hey everyone,
I rooted my nexus one when it was 2.2, now im trying to update to 2.2.1. However the OTA update wasnt taking, it failed and the installation aborted everytime. I search forums and found one saying to factory reset my phone, which i did. Saved everything with titanium backup. Now im stuck with:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Kernal version:2.6.29-01117-g4bc62c2 android-build apa26#1
Build nuumber: EPE76
One problem is i do not get an OTA update to upgrade to 2.2 or 2.2.1. Also i did a manual update with signed-passion-FRF50-from-ERE27.1e519a24.zip and it fails and installation aborts. How can i get back to at least 2.2, but preferably 2.2.1.
Also when trying to restore my apps from titanium backup, it tells me my phone is not rooted, but I still see the little "padlock" unlocked when i boot my phone.
Thanks, hope someone can help
John
What recovery are you using?
fastboot, then recovery, used a zip i downloaded from another forum that gave me build epe76. just renamed it to undate.zip and let the phone do the work.
What recovery are you using? Stock? Clockworkmod? Amon_RA?
i guess just stock, all i do is fastboot the phone and hit recovery
Have you tried ROM Manager?
yes but i am getting an error that my phone is not rooted. Although it is, the padlock is open when i boot the phone. If I root it again will i be able to install 2.2?

There you go.
Unlocking the phone is one thing. Rooting is another. You need to root it over again, but it should be easier this time since you do not need to unlock your bootloader.
ok i will try but before i do should i upgrade to 2.2 or 2.2.1 first then root it again? Because that was my problem originally, i rooted it when it was 2.2 and could not get do the OTA update to 2.2.1 to work the installation aborted with an error every time.
No, root the phone first. Then you can put whatever the hell ROM you want.
It's like putting your pants on first, then your shoes.
Yeah root first cuz most of the custom rom already jumps to 2.2.1

Also, if you root first, you can make a full backup before doing anything else...

[Q] no luck flashing

This is a rather long post. I want to be as precise as possible regarding my dilemma, so thanks in advance for taking the time to read it.
I own a Samsung Captivate SGH-I897. It was running the stock Éclair 2.1. A couple of weeks ago I successfully flashed Perceptions build 8 by DesignGears on to my phone. I used the very helpful instruction videos by Connexion2005. A week later, I flashed Perception 9 with the same success as the first time. A couple of nights ago I decided to flash Perception 9.5. About 2/3 of the way through something happened, not sure what, but I was unsuccessful flashing it. I tried 3 or 4 more times without any success. Each time I attempted to flash the new rom, I would go through the process of using Odin I897UJI6-OCD-Rev02 to get the stock rom on to my phone. I even used the master clear. Out of frustration I looked at my phone info and discovered that it now has firmware version 2.2, baseband version I897UCJI6, kernel version 2.6.32.9 and build version Froyo.UCJI6. I re-rooted the rom with z4 root and installed rom manager. After this I tried re-installing Perception 9.5 into the root file. I attempted to flash it onto the phone, once by renaming the zip file update and once without renaming it. I tried flashing it through rom manager and by using the 3 button process, all to no avail. Each time I attempted the rooting, the phone would begin normally enough, however, when I try to reinstall packages, a message comes up saying “E: failed to open /mnt/internal…sd/update.zip (no such file or directory) E: signature verification failed. Installation aborted.”
I have read as many posts on this subject as I possibly can find in xda, android central and Samsung captivate forum.com. This is extremely frustrating. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any and all suggestions.
1. Please try to split into paragraphs to go easy on eyes, esp for readers on mobile.
2. Did u try flashing to 2.1 stock?
3. Once u r on stock, u need not root ur phone. Rename the ROM of ur choice to update.zip, go to recovery, and apply update.zip.
A couple of ROMs I tried recently in this way and was successful:
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848066
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882397
my suggestion is Flash back to Stock 2.1 rather than flashing to the leaked Froyo JI6.
Odin 1 click JF6 (which is stock eclair). After the flash use the same odin module to run master clear.
Re-root
Install Rom Manager/CWM recovery
and proceed with fresh custom rom flash of your choice via clockwork recovery

do you realize how many devs tell you NOT to do that?
everyone recommends flashing through CWM, which root is not required for either. leave the CWM update.zip on the sdcard and do it that way....

+1 on flashing via CWM
Thanks for the help everyone. I followed your suggestions and was able to successfully get Perception 9.5 up and running.

Storage not prepared error on SC-02B (docomo)

Hello all,
My phone is an SC-02b (Japanese Docomo version of the I9000)
First off a little history...
I originally purchased the phone here in Tokyo and it was Froyo 2.2.1 build. I used superoneclick root from here on XDA to root the phone and everything worked great
I wanted to try out Darkys Rom so I flashed it with ODIN. Everything was ok with the new Rom except there was no internet connection at all. I did a bit of checking and found out that the Modems are different on my SC-02B the other I9000 versions.
In order to change the Modem I tried flashing Darkys again with the original stock modem (found it here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11614716) This resulted in Odin crashing and I had no choice but to unplug the phone from Odin in the middle of the process.
Stupidly I did not make a backup of my original phone so I used the original firmware above and flashed it back, now my phone is Froyo 2.2
Everything works ok but when I enter recovery mode I get the following error...
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
(No such file or directory)
E:install_applications_for_customer: Can't mount H
IDDENSDCARD
your storage not prepared yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
copy application failed.
I used Samsung KIES to upgrade the phone to Froyo 2.2.1 but now Superoneclickroot doesn't work anymore, the program simply stops responding at waiting for device (tried all the fixes in the forum threads and in recovery but nothing works so I'm assuming it is because of the error above)
For now I simply went back to the original Froyo 2.2 and rooted with Z4 Root but I would really like to fix the problem and be able to have a rooted phone with Froyo 2.2.1
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Bump... hopefully someone knows how to fix this?
The SC-02B doesn't seem to like custom kernels and roms
I rooted mine on 2.2.1 with superoneclick. My only issue was my AV software was stripping parts of the app so it would not work. I had to disable my AV software and then download and run it. After that it ran perfect.
Thanks very much for the reply.
Thankfully the issue has been resolved... it seems as though when I flashed the initial Rom it screwed up the drives for my phone so I had to go into device manager, uninstall everything and then install the correct drives manually.

I am getting this same message how exactly did you fix this?

[Q] Cannot root my SGS. Please HELP!

I have SGS i9000T
firmware 2.2 froyo
baseband - i9000TjjjP3
build number - jjjP8
I have tried z4root. not working, being forceclosed or stuck.
tried "Download One click root tool for SGS GT-I9000" - not working for my build probably cause was tested on jjjP2 and not working for jjjP3 and jjjPw.
think for mine too. is there any way to get root access to my phone.
better with an option to unroot it.
Thanks.
Just look for the CF-Root-kernel.
No option for unroortng though, but why do you want to unroot?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
do i have to unroot too change roms ? or i just misunderstood ?
my phone as it is kind of slow and getting stuck once in a wile.
i want to change to darky's 9.2. i saw it's stable and extremly fast.
the question is ho to backup curent rom without root access ? is it possible to unroot using odin ?
is odin saves the previous rom ? or can i backup my current rom without rooting ?
1)No you dont have to unroot to change roms, if you must root try superoneclick, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuaXu8kusvA
2)Try Darkys 10.1 its the latest and extremely fast and stable, you dont have to root it roots when you flash the rom, check here....
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/v10-1-fast-sleek-beautiful.3100/
3)What rom are you currently on? if its a stock rom dont worry about backing it up you can always get it back at samfirmware.com, if you want to back up ALL your apps etc before the flash, use titanium backup.
4)hit thanks
I've tryied this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728754) automated and manual methods but none of them worked.
The automated I get:
*daemon not running. starting it now*
*daemon started successfully*
error: device not fond
The manual:
First of all I can not find the "sdcard" file. I only have an "sd! file.
First I've created a file named "sdcard",
Then tried to use put the "update.zip" file in the root of "sd" file.
None of them worked because when I try to do this step:
"With the volume down key go to the option: "apply: /sdcard/update.zip""
I get this error:
E:failed to open /mnt / internal_sd / update.zip (No such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Instalation aborted.
I've already tried to created "mnt/internal_sd" file but it didn´t work as well.
My cellphone is:
PDA: I9000XWJPA
PHONE:I9000XXJPP
CSC: I9000TMNJP3
I am only posting here because I'm not able to post on the above thread an I'm looking for solutions in this forum for 7 straith hours...
Pkease help me!!
