I seem to be getting around alright. With some help from this forum, and the stickies, It's been a good transition. I'm coming over from a BlackJack, but had only used it for a couple of months. So far, I find WM6 to be fairly intuitive and easy to manage.
As a work tool, this is going to be sweet for me. I'm a teacher, and I travel from class to class. The coolest thing is that I can now load my grade book program on the Tilt and only sync to my laptop at weeks end. I've been lugging that monster for three years. I'm looking forward to leaving it at home.
For other "newbies", the search function works like other vB forums. I've had great luck.
From one newbie to another: Welcome
Just a word of caution, in rare cases if you happen to open the file on your PC and also on your PPC it may decide to "update" the file on your PPC and wipe out all your latest info. Didn't happen very often to me, but when it did You can either store it on your memory card and copy it over from there or...
Right...I’ve been using xda-dev for a while and decided its about time I contribute something back....especially as its my uni holidays and I have nothing to do my software idea is basically something to tell you prices of near by fuel outlets. Unless something like this already exists (a quick search of fuel prices on the xda-dev of fuel prices shows nothing)
Firstly I have no previous programming experience but we all have to start somewhere right?
Secondly what would I use to write the program in?
Thirdly how difficult would such a project be?
Sorry if questions I ask don’t make sense, I am a total noob.
I'm a noob aswell, but from what I can see to be able to do this your going to have to have access to all the necessary fuel prices, which are going to be updated how and from where?
Unless you could get access to an existing sql database, i cant see it being practical, well not for a noob anyway.
Anyone Correct me if i'm wrong.
Hmm i guess its best to learn programming before you attempt to write a software. Visual Studio is probably the best one to write in, and i believe the phone uses .NET. (Which can open up more languages and its pretty damn easy to program in)
Too lazy to write a program myself for PPC, but i recommend Visual C++
Video Tutorials -For programming in windows mobile
http://www.cplusplus.com/ -Good place to learn stuff
As for the difficulty, it depends.
Getting the gas info is the easy part, (ie some gas websites have easy URLS such as www.gasblahblah.com/index.aspx&?area=ZIPCODE
then parsing the page is trivial.
As for the functionality, try looking on sourceforge for some sample coding you can use, such as a skeleton for a today plugin etc.
Its not gunna be easy but goodluck!
good luck
As hirst89 said, it will be difficult. First of all, you need to build an up to date database (go check mysql or sqlite on google which are truly wonderful database softwares). Then, about the program itself, you have to learn how to develop in .NET with visual studio and .NET framework 2.0 (license fees are awfully expensive for the whole solution but you could try light versions don't know if they are trustable go check http://msdn.microsoft.com/fr-fr/express/aa975050.aspx). After that, you'll need a good server with an average bandwith (depends on the country you live in, for france go check www.ovh.com).
Good luck, you'll need it!!!!
goorht
Yeh I think my post only touched on the difficulties of it. How would you go about collecting data from presumably the majority of fuel stations? Especially on a low budget, I presume from the fact that your a student.
And as for the programming, I wouldnt like to guess how much of an in depth knowledge you would need of .net for it to be basically functional.
Hope this all helps....but hope it doesnt squash your ideas and aspirations
Thank you for your quick responses...can you think of any more practical or easier to implement which I could start with?
well you could use c# which is use alot for software running on the windows mobile environment. there is Visual C# express version for free if you odnt want to shell out the money for visual studio.

i think i'll start with express and if i enjoy it and get some interest in wat i'm doing then give something else a try.
I'm really worried going into this...i have no idea wat to expect

I had a brief look at creating my own software but my programming and coding knowledge doesn't stretch that far, I think I'll just stick with what im good at CSS, XHTML & Graphic Design
visual studio is easy, VS8 is free but it doesn't do much, if i'm not mistaken and i believe it was mentioned above that visual studio works in .NET but first you should try a couple easy things, try writing a small game like idk SKI FREE!!!! i haven't gotten around to it, but writing a game or other such is one of my projects for the summer while school is out. but that feul idea is fantastic, but windows live already tried it and it is extremely out of date. start small and work into the bigger stuff.
p.s. if you write ski free and get it to work on the phone let me know
Visual Studio Express doesn't allow you to develop mobile applications. Students from selected countries can grab a free copy of VS2008 Professional from here. Otherwise, the next best free solution would be the outdated eVC++ or eMbedded Visual Tools, which only support up to Pocket PC 2003 SDK. However, those apps will still work on WM5/WM6, etc. The main limitation is that the you don't have access to the APIs in the newer OS.

There are some programs that retrieve current and local gas prices. Windows Live Search is one.
I don't want to discourage you from writing your own, sounds like it would be good practice to start with. I wish I had the time to learn how to do it.

This is a wery good book to start whit. Introduction to Programming Using Visual Basic 2008.
is there going to be a beatmaker for the tilt? if its a stupid question im sry. i just wanna kno bcuz it looks really nice.
call apple and ask them, ask for a mr jobs lol

I was wondering if there was a drum machine app. out for windows mobile that is very similar to the one in the link below? If not is there any in the works or someone willing to make one? If i new how i would, but am not good at program developing.

i didnt know we wanted third party apps for the iphone. last time i remebered, my screen said Windows Mobile?
yeah like i said for windows mobile, but an app. similar to that, the same concept.
I absolutly hate the iphone, but that app is pretty cool. So if you want to slam me for liking a application go right ahead. I to would love to have a app like that on my windows mobile.
I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for as far as beat makers go, but take a look at these.
Pocket Jam
Called a "Techno Studio". Drum Machine/Synth/blah blah blah.
Drum Kit Ace
This is more of a 'game.' Has a freestyle mode where you can play a standard full kit.
I had one more program that was a seemingly decent beat maker, but it appears I've uninstalled it by accident. If I remember the name I'll post it.
I haven't see one as cool as the one in Mattyg986's post, but that doesn't mean there isn't one out there. This is only what I've come across.
Is there anything thats alittle more simple?
I just want a casual fun beat maker
oh and free
is that asking too much?
I downloaded Syntrax for my Tilt, but when I run I get a black screen that freezes my device. Anyone got this program to work?
i had syntrax running on my TyTnII
just installed through active sync onto my storage card
not ashamed to say it was over my head though

Its a very basic visual gui tracker - think cubase but way way dithered down. I personally wouldn't use many of the sounds in it for real production, but its a great writing tool.
Everywhere you look is special applications designed for the iphone. Well...I personally don't have one and I think I should be allowed the same privilege to use said applications.
So what I'm wondering is how do applications run on the iphone? Is it a special kernel?
And if so, would it be possible to incorporate a sort of emulator of the iphone on our mobiles to run these iphone specific applications?

WTF? As you said, they're iphone apps, that are made to run on the iphone... If you want to run them, buy one. Or find equivalents for WM.
The iphone is a completely different hardware and software platform than a PocketPC.

I don't know anything about other than seeing the web page. Let us know if you have some luck.
Thanks for the responces. I've seen the whole launcher before but that's not what I'm refering to.
When you go to a site (meebo or Facebook) they have iphone specfic applications. What makes it so those work on the iphone plateform?
I tried to get one of these applications but it tries to take me to the apple store and I don't have itunes so it stops me there.
lol....WM is wayyyy better than the iPhone! (well in my opinion).
XD but i wish WM had multi touch! Can't wait till WM7 or 8 come out! (rumours say that they will have software enabled multitouch!) :O
Don't think it's gonna happen...
AFAIK, there is nothing that will allow you to run iphone programs on wm, and there is probably about a snowball's chance in hell of that ever happening. Iphone is definitely a different kernel, in fact, it is an entirely different operating system, and to make matters worse, it's closed source too. I would just try to find the equivalent applications for windows mobile. For some reason, despite the fact that there are much more users of wm, many websites are obsessed with being supported by the iphone. It's a sad reality, but unfortunately, this is how it is.

Programmers develop a specific version of their website, or stand-alone programs especially for the iphone in addition to the "normal" product. They could do the same for WM - but now the hype is about the iphone, so that's where developers are investing.
That's 100% marketing and fashion. Apple have managed to create such a hype over their iphone that it has simultaneously pushed developers to develop content specifically for it as they would be assured to reach a large audience with it, and people to get one so they could gain access to the said content and goodies - and it worked way too well. The Iphone is the current trend and everybody must make something for it to be "in the move", while people must have one to be in the move (most of the people I know who have bought iphones did it because it's the current "must-have" item, not because of it's capabilities, and they don't use them...)
WM has been around for more than a decade more or less "unnoticed", so there's not the same incentive for people to make stuff for it.
The Iphone triggered a huge workforce, so many people developing stuff for it in such a short time, that maybe in a few months there have been as many programs developed for it than for WM in the last 10 years... and the appstore gathers them all in one easy to search place as opposed of the large scatter of WM stuff everywhere... makes it so easy that it's attractive.
So in summary - it made such a hype that everybody in the general public is gathering around that thing and forgetting the rest.

I second this motion!
What I'm aiming for is sort of a cross-platform. Like how Linux can be run with Windows now. Trying to knock down some of the propiatory software apple has been getting developed. If they can't keep thier software specific to the iphone, then what would be the reason to get one? Something that can play music and go online?
Just something to throw out there.
I think part of the problem is all you need is a mac and you can start coding an application, there's nothing else to buy. On the WM side, while you can download the SDK for free, you have to spend another chunk of money to buy visual studio, which sorry to say, does require a bit of knowledge to code with.
I have a mac, and had an iphone for a little while, and was able to design an application fairly easily.
If MS would create development tools easier to use and free/cheap, I think we would see more applications. The other tough part is, the windows mobile phones out there are more varied. Different form factors, keyboards, touch screens, resolutions, gps, and now accelerometers. At the moment there are 2 different iphones, but they run the same version, same resolution, same hardware buttons, the other differences are already exposed in the SDK so if you want to code and app that uses the 3G connection or GPS it's pretty easy to do so.
If any WM dev guys have some good ideas on free coding let's get going.
iphones run macosx like macs thats a gui on top of a bsd unix based kernel
iphone apps are written in objectC and use cocoa which is a bit like .net
any cpu can emulate any other if it have access to enough memory
mind you it will not be in realtime but much much slower
not to mention that it could take man years to develop the emulator
and prob give a lawsuit or 2 from apple

Funny how Apple came out with Bootcamp within seconds of announcing they were switching to Intel processors , but let one person come up with an OSX emulator and the lawsuits fly.
