[Q] Samsung repair. Will they charge me? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
my captivate has been freezing when using regular phone features such as calling, sending txts, opening up contacts, and etc about once every two days.
It's been doing that ever since I've been messing around with this captivate
Factory reset and returning to stock did not help. I did not flash back to saved rom either. This even happens when using stock version.
As I could not find any solution, I called AT&T and told them that my phones been doing 'this' after upgrading to 2.2 and also told them that my desktop shut down due to power outage during the process.
So the question is... will they know what I've done and charge me?

They won't know. I took one back (to a service center) when the GPS was complete crap, after I flashed several ROMS then went back to 2.2 stock via KIES mini. The guy took it inthe back for a few minutes, then came back with a replacement. It probably was a refurb but hey, it works perfectly, has great gps, looks brand new, and all the button combos work great. I don't think they will know what you did with it, as long as it has the stock 2.2 on it that came fromo KIES mini.

[Q] Galaxy S not booting, black screen!

Firstly, may I apologise, I know this has been covered, I've trawled the internet for hours but just can't seem to get an answer.
I recently updated my UK, unlocked Galaxy S to Froyo via the registry hack, all was fine (ish). Because Froyo had been delayed in the UK and wasn't as great when it was running on my phone I thought it would be safer to revert back to 2.1 and wait until the official UK release came out (I know some will ask me why I did this, I just felt that Froyo was held back for a reason and I couldnt get an answer as to if I could update to the UK version if I already had the Scandinavian one). So I did the reg hack again and was offered 2.1. Everything seemed to go smoothly until the phone rebooted after downloading from Kies. Now the phone's animation starts then the flashing S symbol displays for an extended time. After that, the screen goes black. If I touch the two touchscreen buttons they stay on but do not go off. If I hold the power button the phone turns itself off and when the phone is powered off and I plug it into my PC with a USB, the battery charging sign comes on.
The phone was rooted and I did have the OCLF on but uninstalled that and un-rooted before changing the firmware so it was back to stock.
Before I get 20 people telling me to put the phone in download/recovery mode I must tell you that I can't. My phone has never been able to do it. I've tried every single way and button order suggested. I'm not the only one who's phone won't do it either so it's not just me. The only way I ever saw recovery mode on my phone was when I used the one click root on the PC.
I'm at a total loss. Debugging was turned off because Kies won't let you do anything with it turned on and so ADB recovery is out also.
Please help if you can.
Many thanks,
Ryan
Boot to download mode, do a repartition with Odin and 512 pit flash, remove battery and boot again to download mode and then do a odin firmware flash to which ever firmware you want.
thanks intratech but I can't boot the phone into recovery or download mode (sorry should have stated that). Believe me, I have tried every combination. I did a lot of research and discovered that there are quite a few people for whom that feature was disabled.
if the 3 button combo is not working on your phone, you should not do these risky stuff actually
take a look at this thing

thanks Noobproof. I remember coming across that thread last night. Although I consider myself ok with software, soldering and slicing just isn't my forte. I haven't got a clue about soldering, etc. I've just come back from the Carphone Warehouse (Samsung suggested I go there as they are the service centres listed on the Samsung UK website). The engineer had the phone for half hour and said that the "board was faulty". Haven't got a clue what he meant by that, unless he meant the internal SD which a few people have had go on them. Anywho, he told me to ring Samsung and send it in for a repair. I did that and need to send my phone special delivery to a company called regenersis in Scotland.
I knew rooting and flashing custom roms was a risk, that's why I never touched Odin, etc. I used Kies to upgrade to Froyo and Kies to downgrade back to Eclair. You would think that sticking to official Samsung software would be safe. I must admit, when it was going well I loved my Galaxy but more and more I'm starting to wish I'd opted for the Iphone. It just seems that there have been so many glitches and bugs, I mean, why should there ever be a need for lag fix in the first place? I often found myself keeping my fingers crossed when downloading simple apps as that was usually touch and go!
Feeling a bit deflated now. Was hoping some clever boffin had designed a software solution that would recognise the phone and force it into download/recovery mode.
Ah well, thanks for taking the time to respond anyway.
Best wishes,
Ryan
You know i was very happy when i for the phone for the first time and while i was doing a research (i live in turkey and there is no stock android market here) i came along this forum. And i have learned that i havent got the 3 button combo. I downloaded the 3 button fix abd took the phone to samsung centre.
They told me that they cannot flash it and i made a huge fight then they accepted and i have my 3 buttons. Never give up your phone. I dont think the internal sd is faulty it is just corruppted if you can access the recovery menu you could fix it. Any way you have to find a service centre that has an anyway jig box other a jtag box otherwise they will have to replace the motherboard. Good luck

[Q] Keeps backing up without pressing anything

So I just got a brand new Galaxy S after my old one bit the bullet, and now within 2 days of owning my new one it keeps backing out of everything. It's like the back button is being pressed every few seconds. So no matter what application I am using it won't stay open. Any answers?
Mine is doing the same thing, the home button also gets stuck occasionally. I called tech support and supposedly they are sending me another replacement.
Same here
My third phone did the same thing after I upgraded to froyo. I was ready to take it back but I tried doing a factory reset (dialed the reset number) and after a couple more of the phantom button preses it just stopped and has been okay for a week or so now.
Not the best way to fix it but at least I didn't have to have it exchanged again... yet.

So you say that you upgraded to froyo and now it.s only backing up
Maybe you have to upgrade to android 2.2.1 nobody knows what improvements there are in 2.2.1 maybe we have just found the awnser
Try and report back i want to know
And a last option is to go to the shop were you bought it maybe they can help

Mine has been doing it on 2.2 and several 2.2.1 roms actually. The reset did fix it for a day or so but it came back.
ok, that's weird

[Q] Bought off of eBay and the camera goes black on start up.

Are there any issues with this known, is there any tests that can be performed on the hardware? When I had WM6.5 I could test various hardware pieces such as the speaker, flash or display.

This is a phone that I bought my friend for his birthday. I have a Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S.
I actually plan to sell mine and get a Nexus One. I really like the phone better then my Vibrant.
If you haven't already, do a factory reset (settings>privacy>factory reset). Since your unrooted it's unlikely it's a software fault.
Second resort, call HTC. Warranty's are device based, not owner based, so if the device is still under warranty you can get a new one
As a last resort, if your warranty is expired, I would root it without unlocking the bootloader. Try a couple different ROM's and kernals and see if you get any results.
I actually had this problem a while back. I was getting FC's every time I tried to access the camera (through any app). I figured I dropped it and broke a connection or something inside. I finally called HTC and they sent me a new one.
I had to restore everything back to stock since it was running CM6. After everything was back to stock, the camera magically started working again (and I reverted to some nandroid backups from months before and the camera still didn't work then). I returned it for a new unit anyway and HTC didn't charge me or say anything.

Fixing random shut down

My wifes captivate has the random shut down issue. Already got replacement phone and it started back up after a few weeks. If I use Odin one click to restore ucjf6 (or upgrade her phone to froyo) will this end my shutdown woes? I have been under the impression that the shutdown issue was a software problem.
I can't say I've ever heard of that happening to a stock rom (I'm guessing you never flashed any custom ROMs on to it)...
At this stage, I think it'll be better off if you take it back to AT&T as you've not really done anything to it (modding/romming wise).
Its out of warranty.she has been dealing with it by using an app from the market. I was hoping that upgrade to froyo would over write the defective software. Then I got to thinking that maybe odin would do the same thing.
The app from the market works perfectly, but it kills her battery life(it's called Captivate Keep Alive from Blue Steel).
Hmm, then yeah I suggest for you to flash her phone... Possibly to a custom ROM at this stage. Stock ROMs usually have way too much bloatware.
Also, if you can please check what version of Captivate she has... It'll be underneath where her battery is.
Usually a four digit code (1006,1007,1008,etc).
Hers is 1008.
Yeap, you should be fine to use any of these ODIN files.

2.2 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QL6NX702
If you need instructions, just yell again
I would probably recommend the 2.2 one (if you're not going to flash any custom ROMs).
If you are thinking of custom ROMs, then I recommend going to 2.1.
Thanks for the help. I, and my wifes battery, appreciate it.
My cappy also just randomly shuts off, but i know it isn't the battery because I've switched batteries from another cappy. I also heard there were re-calls on some cappy's as well. can it also be a hardware problem?
I have installed Firefly 3.0 on my captivate every now and then when the battery gets low to like 30% it turns off and then i gotta pop the battery out and pop it back in because it randomly shuts down. It has happened in games, phone calls from friends that are in iraq, and various other things. I just reloaded fire fly onto my phone but I am not sure whats going on with it.
After trying about everything to kill this gremlin, deleting widgets, CKA, Load Monitor, etc., I went back to JF6, charged the phone fully and let it run. The problem is still here. On the very next battrery cycle after reverting to JF6, the random shutdown occurred again while running off battery with a bone stock set-up. The battery was at about 70% when the failure occurred. (It is a new battery too.)
I bot my fone last Sept, just shy of one year ago. So today I called ATT and after a short discussion with the rep, a replacement is on the way. I described the problem and advised that one by one I had un-installed all the widgets and apps that I thought might be causing problems, then mentioned resorting to the factory reset.
A few questions followed. Then I was on hold awhile. I'm really glad I reverted to JF6 and ran the stock set-up to the fail condition. It allowed me to speak to the rep with confidence, and high hopes that they would get me an exchange. When it came time to answer questions about the Settings About details, it was all right as rain.
Now the question is will the new device have the power-off Gremlin? We shall see!
Guess I'll have some fun flashing different set-ups for these next few days 'til the replacement arrives.
Then one last flash to JF6 and back this first cappy goes...
If you are experiencing this shutdown issue, get back to stock and see if it stays. If you have had your phone less than one year, and it's dying on you, you should be able to get a refurb.

[Q] Stock Dialer Gone Bad, Used Odin and Kies, Still bad! Help!

Ok, so Friday morning I woke up and my phone was stuck in exhibition (desk) mode. I had to remove the battery twice to get it to boot into android and stay there.
This is a NON ROOTED Captivate. Using stock Froyo from Kies.
After I get it into Froyo, I went to make a phone call, and then the dialer sends the call, and vanishes. The phone freezes. The call goes through, but I now have no access to the rest of the phone. No ability to use the dial pad, or even to shut off the phone. I have to manually remove the battery.
After 48 hours I was pissed off. I'm out of warranty with AT&T by a month because I bought it on launch day last year.
So I used Odin to reset it to stock Eclair, and tested it, worse than in Froyo! The phone actually froze and the call didn't even go through! So I re-updated via Kies.
I'm back to square one. I have no idea where to go from here. HELP! I don't want to suffer this until the Galaxy S 2's come out here in the states, and I don't want to flash it to a custom rom if at all possible. Resetting it to stock should have fixed the issue if it was software, right? So it has to be hardware, right? But how does that make sense that only the phone function would be affected?
HELP!
Thanks in advance,
Tiberius Reign
^ Any recently downloaded app, widget, etc. that could be suspect ?? Anything come to mind that u may have done right before this started ??
I see u went to stock eclair, but i ask the above just in case u might have reinstalled everything after u went stock.
I tested the phone without installing any apps. I had a worse problem. The damn phone rebooted. I upgraded back to Froyo, and it became manageable. I saw someone else who was having similar issues with com.android.phone freezing and locking up all the time. Mine does it some of the time, and it's getting worse. I tried the delvik clear etc that was listed, and it still didn't help.
I'm kind of at my wits end here.
A lot of us i think are starting to have this problem. I had started a thread a while back about it but was never able to solve the problem. here is my original thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168128
here are threads of other people having a similar problem that i have also replied in
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204823
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226807
i think would should all stick to replying back to one thread maybe this one because its newer, this way it can be easier for us to help each other find a solution to this problem.
