any DS7 custom ROM run directly on SD card - Dell Streak 7

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a Android SD rom available, like those people use for their HD2, etc. I want to try other ROM quickly but I don't want to go thru the steps to flash. It would be nice if I can just boot the rom from the SD card somehow.
Thanks.

That would require someone making a SPL/SBL like magldr.
The s7 doesnt have a custom SPL, do any tegra2 devices have a custom spl?
Until that time dont even bother thinking about something like that as it's a massive feat to pull off. The HD2 already is recorded in the annals of history as one of the few devices to have a good working custom spl as it's exceedingly rare for a device to recieve so much deep support to make it happen.

I was asking because I noticed there is a custom ROM running directly on SD card for nook color...hope someone will figure out...

The nook color was almost designed with that in mind wasnt it? It's prob easier if that's true, more importantly there's many nook users/devs in comparison to the S7

Newbie HTC Tytn II owner query...help greatly appreciated

Hey everyone. I have had my Tytn2 for about 6 months now and am generally displeased with the speed of its operation. As it is my first Windows Mobile phone(v6.1) I hoped that it could supersede my older non smartphones but i am now currently doubting my investment. The idea of system optimisation and sub standard/non existant drivers has recentely come to my attention by surfing the internet trying to find the reasoning behind its sluggish operation. As i am not up to date with many technical terms used on this website and the reasonings behind the slowness of it i am making my post fairly general. I have reaslised though that there are things out there that can boost its speed and operation and make it an overall better phone.
If anyone has some favourite, worthwhile or must have tweaks i can do to my phone it would be much appreciated if you could fill me in, send me a link or generally point me in the right direction.
Cheers for your help in advance and thanks to the people out there who are working on these such things
Put a ROM on it that isn't loaded down with ATT bloatware, and HTC's slowness. You'll need to install a HardSPL on your device, SuperCID unlock your device, flash a radio, and choose a ROM to install on your device.

thankyou for your post. Excuse my ignnorance but what does a ROM actually do to the phone? I have no issues with doing so, i just really dont undertand what it does/the reasoning behind it. And also a radio? i have searched threads but there is so much about installing them etc but not many explinations on their workings. cheers k-semler
ok.. i have been looking around some more and found some more answers to my questions...so it basically boosts the performance? so once this is done what can i load onto my phone to make this all worthwhile? And also once this is done does is load as per normal, just faster? Or does the phone have a whole new layout etc. that the creator made?
cheers

The ROM is equivilant to the OS on a desktop computer, the radio allows communication via cellular, wi-fi, and GPS communications. The HardSPL is equivilant to the MBR on a desktop computer, and the Super CID is equivilant to the BIOS on a computer. (A locked CID will only allow you to install signed ROM's from either your telephone service provider, or HTC, while after a SuperCID unlock, you will be able to flash any ROM you so desire.)

The easiest way to describe it is if you went and bought a name brand computer, when you initially set up the OS, (or use the recovery discs that came with the computer), it will install the OS along with a ton of bloatware, half-functional trial ware, and other unwanted software. However, if you were to boot off of a Windows retail disc, you would have the same operating system, but without all the unnecessary software that the retailer included as an added "bonus". So yes, the computer will operate faster due to not being loaded down by unnessecary software.
Yes, once a new ROM is flashed to your phone, and it was a successful flash, it will boot up as normal, and go through the customization process. After the customization process, it will soft-reset the device, and your phone will boot as normal. It will be as fresh as it would be had it come out of the box that way. Yes, this means that you will lose your contacts list, emails, and everything else you have stored on the phone's main memory. (just like you would lose everything on your HDD if you wiped out your OS and installed it again).
To back up your contacts, simply copy the file PIM.VOL from the root of your device to a microSD card, or your desktop. After you have flashed the phone, rename the new PIM.VOL on the root of the device to PIM.OLD, and copy over your archived PIM.VOL to your phone. Soft reset your device, and boot it up like normal. After the phone restarts, verify you have your contacts list restored, and then delete the file PIM.OLD from your device. The same goes for any other data you may wish to preserve. Copy it off to an SD card, or your desktop computer. After you have flashed your phone, simply copy back all data you have archived. You will obviously need to re-install any applications you wish to have on your phone.
With a customized ROM, you can get anything from a bare-minimum install, (just the OS and nothing more), to a completely new layout with TouchFlo3D, Manala 2D, HTC Home, etc. Look at the ROM development forum, decide what you want your phone to do, and go with it. There are also betas for Windows Mobile 6.5 if you wish to try it, as well as ROM's with PIE 8.5, Opera, and virtually any combination you could possibly want to customize the layout of your phone. The phone will be as a completely different device if that is what you so desire. As far as customisation programs, look into Advanced Configurator 3.3 or Kaiser Tweak. You can also install a registry editor and do the edits manually if you so desire.
thanks for that, that simplifies it somewhat. Should i be attempting to do this to my phone in fear of a major screwup if i lack in depth undertanding of what i am actually doing? i can download the files and follow steps and probably get it right but if something goes wrong i will have not a clue of how to fix it or what i did wrong. Thats my only fear.... what your thoughts?
also can you recommend any decent ROMs for a first timer/do you know anyone i can ask?
RE: Fears
Yeah, first time flashing is pretty scary. Believe me, I know all too well how nerve wracking flashing ROMs can be the first couple of times. Just make sure you follow the directions to a "T" and you should be fine. =]
But, if by some freak accident or some screw-up on your part...there ARE a few fixes depending on what broke. There are various threads in the ROM area on this particular thing.
With that being said, just follow the flashing instructions, make sure you backup your PIM, and then pick yourself a good ROM! =]
For first-timers I'd go with either a standard 6.0-6.1 ROM or something by Dutty or L26. It's been so long and so many flashes since my first that I've honestly forgotten which one I started w/ but Dutty & L26 both make wonderful ROMs and I've had various builds by both.
Best of luck!
i am with 3 mobile: does this influence which ROM i chose. Or is this dealt with during the unlocking phase?
That is dealt with during the unlocking step. After you unlock your device, it will not matter who your carrier is. You could insert a SIM from Hong Kong if you wanted to.

Trying to root my G1 but SD can't be read

Hi everyone. I just joined this forum and I am hoping to get some help from some wise jailbreaker out there..
I bought my G1 from T-Mobile a couple of weeks ago with the intent to jailbreak it and use it as a modem for my laptop. I finally got started on the project and I was stonewalled right from the get-go. Neither the original SD card in the phone nor my new 8GB SD card can be seen by either one of my computers. My desktop is running Windows XP Pro and my laptop is running Vista Home Premium. Neither one will see the SD card no matter what I do. The card does not show up in "My Computer" on either one of the systems, but shows up as "Drive J" in both of them under "Drive Mangement". But it says there is "No Media", so therefor nothing to format.
Since I can't even format the card, I am bogged down from the start. I am hoping someone out there can tell me what to do in order to jailbreak this phone, since that was the only reason I got it. I was perfectly happy with my HP6550 iPAQ otherwise...
Has anyone out there had the same problem?
have u tried formating the card to fat32?
You could try a sd reader. When you pluggin the phone in did you make sure to pull down the notification bar and click the usb thing and hit "Mount"?
Try going into settings, sdcard and storage and format the card that way. If not it sounds like a windows driver issue, you might want to try a card reader, or download and burn a live cd of linux something like ubuntu which will have no problem reading the android phone. You could also use hp as a card reader if it supports micro sdcards
You could just download the files you need through the internet on your phone also, I do all my flashing, downloading and modifing right on my g1, download something like linda or astro file manager from the market so that you can actually download the files
Thanks guys.
pistol4413: That is what I am trying to do according to instructions. But without the card beeing seen by Windows, it is sort of hard to format it...
crpercodani: Thanks for the tip. I will try a separate card reader. And there was no need to hit "mount". It all happened automatically and the phone said the card was mounted. Well, not in those words but it said the card was connected. I tried to unmount and remount again. Didn't do anything.
gridlock32404: I tried that (formatting in the phone). It did nothing. I will try a separate reader. The HP doesn't support micro SD, only mini and standard.
And I can't believe it would be a Windows driver issue both in my XP Pro system and Vista Premium...?
Provided I get this solve first of course, I am also curious if you might have detailed, reliable instructions on how to go through the whole root thing and getting the phone rooted and setup to provide a wireless network for my laptop? Right now I am following instructions from Anthony Moreno on YouTube. He has a few instructional videos on there that seem to make sense. But if any of you know of some other source for instructions, please let me know. I'd appreciate any help I can get to make this a smooth project and not a major headache...
There are many detailed posts and stickys, on this q and a there is a thread for the one click that is really good, it is written by david and is very good instructions
Thanks for the mention gridlock32404. I have a detailed guide in my sig for the one click method. Or if you search for root/hack g1 then there is a good guide that i used to root my phone back in the day. If you use my method and encounter any problems pm me because i will see that faster than a post in the thread also if you do it and go with the rom in the guide (latest cyanogen rom) it comes with a tether app to do exactly what want (at least i think it does)
They are good instructions david and I think that it is warranted to get sticky since most of the new g1 users are using it, I would perfer them to do the old fashioned way so they learn more about what they are doing but the one click is bringing a lot of new users to rooting since it is less scary

I completely agree. People should root their phones the long way first but one click is good for people that know what they are doing
I got 2 guys that work at my local tmobile that asked me if next time I come pay my bill if I could root their phones for them so I might just give that one click a try. I got a ? For you on that regard, can I just pop my sdcard in there phones and set them up that way and when I flash the new rom I can put back in their card without any damge to mine when I put in back in my phone

As long as you power your phone down first i can't see any why your sdcard would get damaged.
That's what I thought, so I guess I will do that tomorrow then or monday
You should tell them you will partition their sdcards and install the new spl, if they leave a mytouch on the table and look away lol.
It's a mytouch and a g1. The g1 guy wants hero so I would set that all up for him. Why do you say that about the mytouch, it's gonna be my first go on that so I am unsure

The mytouch was a joke payment method. To do one click root on the mytouch make sure you put the 1.33.2005 spl on it, since any spl for the g1 (hard or eng) will brick it. Also you might want to get the amon_ra recovery image for the mytouch
Yeah I was planning to put the amon's recovery on their since they can't use the recovery console anyway, I was aware of the spl difference though so I was good on that, I did read up alittle on it

SD vs EMMC booting

I have had my nook for a little while now, and I went like the normal people from nooter to custom roms (I skipped the sd boot). Now I am thinking of going to boot from sd instead of emmc, for the simple fact that there is no timeline for the read to me on the app platform (I think it works on ipad, iphone but don't quote me). And I really enjoy the device I am actually glad that the CM7 is in it final state because this came more like my Windows mobile waiting for new version days. But the read to me feature is excellent it helps me with encouraging my 4yr old to read instead of play "that bird game". Is it hard to backup all my emmc settings and transfer to sd? I know I have to do some research on how to get my device back nootered, and have the sd boot available. But I think that will be my best route for the moment. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Is this in any way possible?

I've been Googling and searching as many different forums as possible. Just can't find a solution.
Is it possible to keep the Nook itself at stock and dual boot two versions of CM7 from the SD card? I'm sharing the Nook with someone else and it's been a pain trying to keep everything separate. We did dual boot from the EMMC and SD for awhile. But to be honest there is very little, if any, performance loss on the SD. So we're hoping we can dual boot off of that instead and keep the Nook itself at stock. Mainly I'm just paranoid about any hardware failures and voiding the warranty.
Is this possible at all?
very doable. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987735 shows one way. with a boot menu you wouldn't even have to swap out sd cards
hmmm, try this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=962708
Thanks for the reply. Though that entire thread confuses the heck out of me.
Essentially I'm trying to:
1. Leave the Nook at stock. Completely untouched.
2. Install two totally independent versions of CM7 onto a single SD card. One for myself, and another for the person I'm sharing the Nook with.
3. Be able to boot between the two. This would give us both our own apps, settings, etc.
I did see a thread with a dual boot Phiremod / Honeycomb SD image. So I know it's possible. Perhaps it's totally out of my league though. It would be REALLY NICE if there was a "profiles" or "user account" feature in Android. Like in Windows / Mac / Linux / etc.
I can dual boot between the EMMC and SD card just fine. And it looks like I may need to just do that. I'm just super paranoid about running into a hardware failure and not being able to use the warranty. (Bad screen, broken power button, whatever.) I've been known to have all sorts of bad luck when it comes to electronics.

Help - No helpful tutorials for basic stuff?

Hey guys, ordered my first Pi 2 Model B today, should be here very soon! I've got the media center ready, (Using a portable HDD with a powered hub) Will be installing Kodi, OSMC with the supplied n00Bs SD card that comes with the package. That's all sorted "I think" should be quite easy.
I've just put Recalbox on a SD Card ready to also install and then I can run both recalbox and my media center at different times. using both SD Cards.
I have a slight problem though, I don't think I'll be able to network into the Pi, to put the ROMs into the proper folders, So how do I put the games onto the SD card? Can I just take the SD card out of the Pi and put it into my laptop and transfer the ROMs??
With Neo Geo, What do I do to get anything working at all? I've downloaded "piFBA" But I just can't find ANYTHING thats even remotely user friendly tutorial for a newbie with Linux etc on what to put where, It's like they just expect EVERYONE to know exactly what to do, And I'm quite PC savvy in some sense, so I'm a little dumb founded why I'm struggling to find much info, Is the Pi just not that popular ? I really don't know.
I "think?" I'll be fine with everything installing, but I think I may be stuck with the roms, and putting them into folders etc. I've even pre scraped the games to get it ready and make it a quicker install!
I also think I'm going to have problems with Mame/NeoGeo.
I'd love some help ! Or a link to a super easy informative tutorial on a step by step guide on exactly what to do.
I think I've defiantly decided on recalbox over retropie and emulation station, I just love the simplicity it's offering, and for now I think it'll be a good choice...
But I'm so lost and confused, I can't seem to find much help.
