Are you rooted?!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Root Explorer should work.
You need to be rooted and have the system mounted as R/W
have the same problem. Phone is rooted, rootexplore asked for super ursser permission, is set to R/W and still i can't change gps.conf in etc folder! i mean i'm copy/paste the change one but it remains the same! WTF?
Have you tried setting the permissions? Long press and hit permissions. Select the ones you want and try again.
Check if the SU permission is correctly attributed to root explorer, or give it again

I am in need of read/write access to my system folder. I am simply trying to copy some ringtones and add a boot animation.
I have SGS tools and ran the r/w script, which allowed me to VIEW the folder with Droid Explorer, however I am unable to actually copy TO the system folder or its subfolders.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
EDIT - I've also tried to push the files to the phone via ADB, but I get an error telling me "Failed: Operation Not Permitted".
EDIT x2 - I've also got Root Explorer installed on the phone and it showed R/W access, but again, I can't get any files pushed to the phone.
Did you allow sgs tools to get a root permission?

I've still got no access to R/W in any of the system folders/subs. Any ideas?
I am having the same problem with root explorer..
I have fixed permissions in CWM
It had worked once but now it wont mount r/rw in system folder. Press the icon and it does nothing.
Superuser permission in SGS tools, Root exploer all show active
Any ideas?
Anyone else have any ideas? I'm totally puzzled at this point.
I have sort of fixed the problem..
I go into SGS tools and run the batch file to give r/rw permissions, then I can mount r/rw in system folder, but I loose this each time I reboot and I think when I connect USB..
but it works for the purpose I needed!
I think I've found a work around (or maybe the way it was SUPPOSED to work)...
I rebooted the phone in recovery. Then, selected "mount /system". Then I went to Advanced and "Fix Permissions" (don't know if I had do, just did).
THEN - I was able to FINALLY push the files to the correct folders! I tried it using ADB commands and also with Droid Explorer - Both worked great.
I don't know if the phone was always supposed to be in recovery to do it, but it worked!
Hey Guys,
Asus just came out with a new writing app for their transformer (I believe?)

trying to turn my xoom into a fully functioning school machinnneee
Thanks in advance

Could i get a link that you say?
im looking for a link myself
anyone any luck with this yet?
I know it's the long way round, but you could probably extract it from this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1283081
So I gave it a try and it worked. Just drop the apk into /system/app/ set the permissions and reboot.

Im assuming you have a file manager installed (Root Explorer, Es File Explorer)
You have to long press the app, after moving into proper folder /sysstem/app/ and set the same permissions as the others (I cant remember which ones they are exactly but you will be able to tell once in the file system).

You didnt follow the instructions. You shouldnt be trying to install anything because the .apk's are not signed.
However, if you move supernote.apk and supernote.odex into system/app and set proper permissions and then reboot it will work.
still cant install this app. I move both supernote.apk and supernote.odex to system/app. try to set permission in many different ways, but this app still not be installed. i guess i give up.

Are you setting the permissions exactly the same as all other apps in system/app and are you rebooting?
I cant remember which set worked for me - I downloaded the Dump and the ROM but I know one didnt work.
Try both.

Yes, there are two types of permission: rw-rw-rw and rw-r-r. I alredy tried and reboot but still didnt work. I download the dump image. Trying down the Rom now.
---------------
Ok. Using the .apk from the ROM, i got the app installed but FC upon opening.
---------------
finally, got the app working.
+ get the app from ROM link, not the dump link
+ copy supernote.apk to sytem/app
+ using root explorer/es file explorer, set permission : read-write for user-group-and other (rw-rw-rw).
+ reboot
Can someone please save everyone a lot of trouble and post the .apk from the ROM?
here is the link for the app: http://www.multiupload.com/GX9O2CTQ1W

Yes you need root and a tool like root explorer. Just take apks out of rom and place in system apps.
Check that they have same permissions as other apps, rw and such and click them to install. Not sure if they install themselves with a reboot.

You will see all applications there. Just Copy and paste to your external SD Card. When you want to restore just paste them to System/app using root explorer and set permissions as rw-r-r and reboot

How you set the permissions? Post a ss if you can.

Ok, download rom you want to restore from, usually a zip file, unzip it. Then with root explorer navigate to tar. Md5 file and open it, you might need to rename to tar file only, then within that search for a fokder that contains the apk you want, extract them, or copy them outside tar file then to your system app location etc etc

Just keep file pressed when selecting, then menu opsbup and scroll in menu to option permissions. Then select those according to permissions set inother files.
All this in root explorer. Not sure if a fix permissions from cwm recovery fixes this. Never tested it.

You might need to mount system/apps as read write r/w. That is a button on top left of screen when you are in that folder, just set it back when done

I'll teach you how to fish instead of giving it to you.
There is a website called google.com type your query there, together with e.g android, or xda or both, and youre sure to find your answers to almost any question.
Might need to query with different phrases or order of words, sometimes in steps.
Thats how I figured out last time. Sorry I wasnt able to answer stepwise step for step. maybe you make a tutorial with print screens, for future users that have same question
Damn I suck at explaining

anyways thanks for the help...
i have just flashed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1864510
now i got system UI stopped and no status bar at all, any help will be great
as I said it's better to do it manually than flashing. This way u can always make a backup and restore if messed up. use root explorer to navigate to system/app - systemui.apk and check if the permissions are set to rw-r--r--
check if there is a systemui.odex file. If yes delete it and reboot

I'm trying to stop the tethering check by editing the build.prop.
Everytime i edit (using numerous editors on my mac, including the terminal via vi) my device hangs on the google logo.
Stock Rom, rooted.
Any thoughts on why this would be?

Tried this too an nothing!
I can't figure this out for the life of me.
You need to copy the build.prop out to your SD card, edit with a proper editor, copy it back into place replacing the current file, and then change permissions to 755 I believe. I suggest keeping an unmodified version of the build prop on your SD card also
---------- Post added at 09:36 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:31 AM ----------
This thread should help a bit. I know its for the g3 but same premise. the permissions appear to be 644 not 755.

In root explorer, explore to /system. Make the /system r/w (it'll have a r/o next to it so press the "Mount R/W"). Long press the build.prop file and select Open in Text Editor, make your changes and save & exit. Press "Mount R/O" at the top to change the /system back to read only. Reboot.
