segate goflex external hard drive??? - G Tablet Themes and Apps

Hi guy,
I have tried repeatedly to try to get the gtablet to recognize my external harddrive- segate goflex but the tablet wont recognize it.
Does it have enough power to power an external harddrive if not is there an app for this?

USB port does not have enough power to power a portable drive.

Thumb drives and external drives with "brick" power supplies work fine, but like aabbondanza said - not enough juice to power the 2.5-inch single-cable drives.

Not entirely true. My friend has a 2.5 inch 320gb buffalo external hard drive that runs entirely on usb and it works perfectly with his gtab and mine as well. He uses vegan froyo while I'm on gtabcomb.

Power, power wherefore art thou power

Then he would be one of the lucky ones. The USB2.0 spec allows max .5 amps to be drawn from the port. HDs use their most power during spin up. If you plug it in & it goes clickity, click or starts to spin up, powers down & starts to spin up again, guess what, not enough power. It is hardly likely that Viewsonic (or Malata) designed it to power an HD since the the VS documentation only mentions USB memory sticks & in designing it to power an hd it would have severely affected the battery life that is such an attraction with tablets. If I had to connect my tablet to power even 3-4 hours, I might as well carry my laptop!
Try it & if it works consider yourself lucky. I've personally tried my year old 500GB Flex & 650GB WD drives & neither power up. If you are lucky enough to get yours to work, don't be suprised if your gTab battery doesn't last nearly as long.
If you are wanting to use a larger, portable storage device with your gTab, your best bet would be a GoFlex Satellite with built in battery & wifi. Don't have to worry if the gTab can power it up or drain your battery.

Although I did not manage to get my Segate GoFlex to work on my Gtab I did get a WD Passport 320gb to work. So far I have only tried it out with some word documents and movies. All appear to work fine. I am currently using CM 7.0.3
Android tablets are pretty finicky about partitions and the WD Passport is partitioned so that their pre installed software cannot be removed from it (other external hard drives are the same way). to get around this I had to use Eraser and Fat32 Formatter. I cannot vouch if this will work for any other hard drives or if it will work on every WD Passport but it did work on mine. I do know however that the formatter provided from HP will not work as it automatically partitions the drive into multiple partitions instead of one large partition.
You will have to PM me if you need links to Eraser or Fat32 Formatter as my new status in the forums prevents me from posting links. This information may help you find it in google, Fat32Formatter is freeware and made by TOKIWA. Eraser is usually the first or second link in google search.
I was using a different formatter when I tried to use my segate goflex and after many attempts gave up. I will try this method that I have used on my WD and let you know if it worked or not.
You are right about the battery. I watched an hour and a half movie in mp4 format off of the hard drive and it drained my tablet to about half. Though, It did get through the whole movie without any lagging, crashing, or any hiccups of sorts.
I also agree that the GoFlex Satellite would be the way to go. The only downfall with this drive is that the battery life only lasts about 2-3 hours or less depending on what you are using it for. So for long ocean flights and such it may not be the best storage device. That being said unless you have a powerful back up battery, using a hard wired usb drive will drain the tablet to about that anyway.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Tab as USB monitor?

Hi - just a random question.
So, samsung made this cool 7" monitor you can connect to your computer via usb called SyncMaster U70. It would be nice small screen to put gadgets/videos through desktop.
I am not so sure how it works, but I thought it would be a neat function if galaxy tab could do it. Is it may be possible?

Yeah that would be nice, but there is just one problem... AFAIK there is no (really simple) possibility to charge your tab via usb.. so if you don't have a dock that can charge and sync at the same time, you'll run out of juice really fast :-/
And as for iDisplay -> it is a cool app, but framerate is still low and I got now and then crashes, but works rather well.

Are you sure. My tab charges using USB(connected to a computer) just fine(very slowly), although it's now showing the normal "charging" icon.

yeah at least for me it doesn't work (Unlocked Euro Tab with overcome) It might charge (without indicating it, at least it didn't the last time I tried that... weeks ago), but it is/was too little to keep up the charge... if I use the tab it is still losing power and if you run some app that is more or less powerhungry like iDisplay it might be a problem :-/
I am not 100% sure but my experience tells me that... buuuut I think that the power from usb SHOULD be sufficient. I speculate that there is a small charge that is enough to keep the tab from losing power while syncing or in mass storage media mode, but too little to really charge the battery... I suspect it is by design, because I don't think the tab is THAT powerhungry, that justifies almost none charge while being plugged in.. (remember, it is just a oversized Galaxy S just with a larger screen)
Maybe the solution is somewhere in the software that manages the charging logic/circuits.
I often charge my TAB off my laptops usb port...seems to work.
I have overcome 1.4.4. installed.

USB Charging in CM10.1

hi, i just installed CM10.1 on my HD+ and love it!! the only problem is that i have seem to have lost my ability to charge my HD+ while synced with my pc (debugging mode i guess). i have searched but i have not found anything that helps with the Nook HD+. so i ask here if anyone can help me out with some info. thanks in advance with any and all help.
I have a motherboard which can provide 3x normal USB power. It can only charge my tablets (Nexus7, Nook HD+, TF101 ...) while the screen is off.
I think this is normal. My USB ports can charge the Nook pretty quick.

hhmmm... thanks for for your input. everything seemed to work when i was running CM10. my HD+ charged with or without the screen on but since i upgraded to CM10.1 my HD+ doesnt charge when plugged into my pc. im trying to search for reasons why but still cant find anything.
I'm running CM 10.1 (6/30) build and it charges over my pc usb.
I did initially have a problem where it didn't recognize it as a storage device for copying files over,
but then I got it working. Not sure if it wasn't charging at that point but I think it was. Wish I could
remember what I did to get the mass storage working.

[Q] How to use the Note without a Battery?

Right I am sick of seeing Samsung Battery's die, not the other day I saw at lest 5 note battery's in one of these recycle battery bins and all of them was ballooned just like mine, I want to use the device without a battery this phone is used as a home entertainment device and 3G modem nothing more, its not used as a phone any more, I want to integrate it in to my Bluetooth speaker would look nice and fit very well.
Problem is I have no idea how to go about doing this without the battery, if there a way to to trick the phone to thing it has a battery or has anyone made a factory cable for the Note?
I feel all companies that make these device to run off a battery only are destroying our world faster as there is so much life left in old android devices if we just could power them from mains power only.
I would like to power it from the battery side if I could so I can still use the USB host but this is not 100% important the 11 gig free on the device and the sd slot will do our home music needs.
Any advice would be great but please don't reply 'get a new battery there cheap', the unit once built wont have access to the battery so making it impossible to keep changing the battery when it balloons again.
Thanks, Rex

For a member with only 5 posts you clearly have no idea what your talking about, how is wanting to give my device a new lease of life
disrespectful? The only thing letting the device down right now is the lag of battery well damaged balloon battery, Housing this with my 50 wat
bluetooth powered speaker would really give new life to this device and how I am using it as a 3G modem I would also like to use the USB host
that this device supports.
I think you should be less disrespectful in your posts next time.

I could use wifi to access content on my network but I was hoping to set up RPI to send the phone to the TV making the device able to also stream my videos to the TV, I am not sure that Android or this device could support multi wifi connections if it could I could do that and also have a dedicated stream for my netflix.
If I can find a way to power all this then I think I will also open a build log post later with all the parts and steps
I was going to use our Acer Iconia Windows 8.1 tablet but the USB host on that is like a wet fist out of water, the android is much better at this task then the tablet.
Recap, I would like to power the device without a battery but via the battery pins so I can still use the USB host.
I need to be able to draw enough power for the device, the USB and Wifi + Bluetooth at the same time.
If any ideas on how this could be done it would be great, I was thinking using some kind of meter to find out what the battery gives the battery circet and then find some kind of multi power block to offer that.

No Android doesn't support Multi-Wi-Fi Connections. (Don't think anything supports that...)
I've tried using Note 2 without charger, doesn't work, probably doesn't for Note either. Though it might work with a socket that supplies loads of power.
Smack that Thanks button if I helped!
KitKat came in on my OmniROM, running on my Note 2.
Sent from a small country called Singapore.
P.S. Time for school, not much time for XDA

Yes by default almost all phones don't let your power them on without the battery, but many newer android devices can be powered
by outlet power when in been programmed a factory mode, this is what I am asking people about if anyone has taken the chip of the batter
and provided it outlet power to fool the phone in to thinking its on battery.
You could cheat, find a power adapter and connect it to the battery connectors.
In case OP is still interested I have an idea about this issue. I had exactly the same question, how to power up an android phone without a batery plugged in.
Ignore daedric's post. Smartphones are powered by batteries which, when fully charged, provide 4.2 volts. Power adapter's output is 5 volts, so you would most probably damage your device. Supposing that phone chargers' output was 4.2 volts you would still not be able to use the device because the device draws a lot more current than a charger can provide.
My idea is to use a reliable DC-DC step down converter, and a powerful power adapter. I don't know how much current a Note could draw from its battery but I would try to find a step down converter that could at least handle 3 amps of output without damaging itself. Then I would try to find a reliable power supply like a 12v 2A. The idea is to connect the power supply to the step down converter and the converter to the battery pins on the device. Of course you would also have to set the potentiometer of the converter to output 4.2v.
BUT, there is one more problem. You have to trick the device to make it "think" that there is a battery connected and I don't know exactly how this can be done. I found on the internet a blog where a guy did so by connecting a resistor between the negative battery pin (on the device) with the third pin on the device. So, I don't know if it's possible on the Note, and how to do it. All I'm trying to say is that it might be possible, it just needs more research.

I was thinking maybe you could take the bust battery and like you said use some kind of step down and psu connected to the battery side of the battery's chip thing so that it would provide the right power to the device.

That's a very clever idea. Unfortunately, I don't have currently any old smartphone to try it. In case you try it, be cautious not to short the lithium battery. They can be very dangerous. In case it vents, the gases are very dangerous if inhaled. There's also the risk of fire.

[Q] (Q) Portable HDD not recognized by TF701

I just upgraded from my tf101 to the tf701 and while I do have the common dock issues the problem that i can't deal with is that the tablet or dock is not recognizing when I plug in my 1TB Seagate FreeAgent. My Tf101 recognized the drive and I can't believe this one won't. I can feel the HDD spin up and the lights will come on, but then they will shut off, but the disk will continue spinning. Also, when I plug in a 32gb flash drive it immediately lights up and gets recognized. It is a Sandisk Cruzer Glide. Any help would be great because the usefulness of the tablet hinges (pun intended) around the dock having the usb port for my HDD. Thanks for any help, -Rich
Sounds as if the TF701 port does not have enough juice to run the Seagate drive. Does it have an external power supply? Plug it in and connect it.

Asus Memopad (me176cx) dead?

The tablet is dead, it was suddenly. Won't charge or turn on and it's not recognised by the PC. Recovery mode (power button + volume-) doesn't work either.
I know that is not the screen, because the PC doesn't detect the tablet at all. I tried with another battery (my wife has the same tablet), but I had no luck. I also know that the charger and the usb cable are fine.
What else I can do, any ideas or suggestions?

I had the same symptoms after disconnecting and reconnecting battery,I hed to disconnect it for like an hour and then three times try to power on the tablet and it did power on. Maybe your battery is dead so after another hour you may try to use the other battery. If it will work, try to connect the batteries together so the dead one can get a little charge (but do some research I am not sure if it won't have a chance to damage anything) then the same after an hour connect try power on and if it powers on immediately give it a charge.

Just wondered if you had tried this and if so, how you got on? Asking because I bought my daughter one off ebay and it was working fine when I got it, am sure I recharged it once , she played it and then again in morning and thinks she played it till battery ran out. I have since tried charging via pc and mains power, and have disconnected battery twice (case was v. easy to remove so concerned this fault may be reason it was sold), but cannot get a flicker of a response on screen. i got my daughter this as she was desperate for an android tablet for mods for minecraft as I had bought her a Amazon Fire 7 and from what I could see just after xmas, it wasnt possible to root it or sideload at that time, and she said Amazon had no mods compared to the play store and she had been ecstatic with the mods she had found for her android for the short time she had it. I do know when I plug it into the wall charger that the motherboard area gets warm if its been plugged in for a while? Bit of a noob on this stuff, and off sick with probs with my nervous system so my concentration and memory can be a pia. Anyway I was wondering how I can find out if its goosed or what I can try? One of the batterys advertised on ebay is about £50 which seems steep to me, esp. if it doesnt fix it, and esp since I have been unable to work for a few years cos of this illness. I only bought the tablets cos I had extra money after I finally applied and got pip, and got it backdated. Any recommendations for a reasonably priced option for her for her minecraft? Should I go the tablet\notebook type route or can they not handle minecraft? Bit confused by these new notebooks esp touchscreen ones as new ones seem to have small amounts of ram yet are v. popular.
Thanks for advice\thoughts\feedback and let me know if I should start ,y own thread...I only jumped on this to see how he got on and then as I do nowadays with this illness, I then jumped from topic to topic that jumped into my head x sorry x

Firt I would try to trickle charge the battery.
BEFORE YOU DO THIS:
Remove the SD CARD. I forgot to do this and snapped my card straight in half removing the back cover.
This started happening to my ME176 as well but of course not until after I retired it and gave it to my mom.
I would start by letting it sit on the charger for about 30 minutes (since we don't know the current charge state and if the overcharge block is functioning). This will give it a slight charge if dead.
Disconnect charger and remove the back cover and disconnect the battery (as posted earlier). Push and hold the power button a few times even though there is no power.
It may take a few tries of disconnecting and reconnecting the battery before it decides to power up, so keep the cover off while doing this.
