[Q] How to use the Note without a Battery? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Right I am sick of seeing Samsung Battery's die, not the other day I saw at lest 5 note battery's in one of these recycle battery bins and all of them was ballooned just like mine, I want to use the device without a battery this phone is used as a home entertainment device and 3G modem nothing more, its not used as a phone any more, I want to integrate it in to my Bluetooth speaker would look nice and fit very well.
Problem is I have no idea how to go about doing this without the battery, if there a way to to trick the phone to thing it has a battery or has anyone made a factory cable for the Note?
I feel all companies that make these device to run off a battery only are destroying our world faster as there is so much life left in old android devices if we just could power them from mains power only.
I would like to power it from the battery side if I could so I can still use the USB host but this is not 100% important the 11 gig free on the device and the sd slot will do our home music needs.
Any advice would be great but please don't reply 'get a new battery there cheap', the unit once built wont have access to the battery so making it impossible to keep changing the battery when it balloons again.

I could use wifi to access content on my network but I was hoping to set up RPI to send the phone to the TV making the device able to also stream my videos to the TV, I am not sure that Android or this device could support multi wifi connections if it could I could do that and also have a dedicated stream for my netflix.
If I can find a way to power all this then I think I will also open a build log post later with all the parts and steps

Recap, I would like to power the device without a battery but via the battery pins so I can still use the USB host.

No Android doesn't support Multi-Wi-Fi Connections. (Don't think anything supports that...)
I've tried using Note 2 without charger, doesn't work, probably doesn't for Note either. Though it might work with a socket that supplies loads of power.

Yes by default almost all phones don't let your power them on without the battery, but many newer android devices can be powered
by outlet power when in been programmed a factory mode, this is what I am asking people about if anyone has taken the chip of the batter
and provided it outlet power to fool the phone in to thinking its on battery.

You could cheat, find a power adapter and connect it to the battery connectors.

In case OP is still interested I have an idea about this issue. I had exactly the same question, how to power up an android phone without a batery plugged in.
Ignore daedric's post. Smartphones are powered by batteries which, when fully charged, provide 4.2 volts. Power adapter's output is 5 volts, so you would most probably damage your device. Supposing that phone chargers' output was 4.2 volts you would still not be able to use the device because the device draws a lot more current than a charger can provide.
My idea is to use a reliable DC-DC step down converter, and a powerful power adapter. I don't know how much current a Note could draw from its battery but I would try to find a step down converter that could at least handle 3 amps of output without damaging itself. Then I would try to find a reliable power supply like a 12v 2A. The idea is to connect the power supply to the step down converter and the converter to the battery pins on the device. Of course you would also have to set the potentiometer of the converter to output 4.2v.
BUT, there is one more problem. You have to trick the device to make it "think" that there is a battery connected and I don't know exactly how this can be done. I found on the internet a blog where a guy did so by connecting a resistor between the negative battery pin (on the device) with the third pin on the device. So, I don't know if it's possible on the Note, and how to do it. All I'm trying to say is that it might be possible, it just needs more research.

I was thinking maybe you could take the bust battery and like you said use some kind of step down and psu connected to the battery side of the battery's chip thing so that it would provide the right power to the device.

That's a very clever idea. Unfortunately, I don't have currently any old smartphone to try it. In case you try it, be cautious not to short the lithium battery. They can be very dangerous. In case it vents, the gases are very dangerous if inhaled. There's also the risk of fire.

[UTIL] current widget - shows actual current output of a charger

Simple widget that shows power draw from a charger in mA. There is an update button on the widget, you can set auto refresh intervals and record logs.

I think you will need to first uninstall the current one, if you have it. I could not sign the apk with the same key the author used since he did not make it available (rightly so)
I think there is actually a bug in the APK, it should be handling this situation, but it's using a slightly wrong filename. I contacted the author already.

Works for me. Thanks. Please note that for the Vibrant it looks like the current displayed in the file is 2x the actual. Few data points to support it right now, but it makes sense (e.g. USB number ~800 in file, measured around 400mA).

Here are some real numbers (the 2X is close, but not quite)
Batt_chg_current: 1102
Measured: 600ma
Batt_chg_current: 814
Measured: 450ma
1.8X actual current equals Batt_chg_current is more like it.

Yes, but it is not the widget's fault.that is the actual value stored by samsung. Other phones may use this value too and display it correctly or samsung may fix it later.

It depends how accurate you want to be. Actual measurements show more then half by a decent amount.
So let me get this straight. My 1a charger which the widget reports as 1100 is putting out 1/2 of it's rated ability. The 1a charger in my car that is being reported by the widget at 860 is wrong as well? I have tested two other chargers and the widget is reporting the charger's rated output +/- 100mAh. So are all my chargers rated output all wrong?

Nope. 2 things determine how much current a phone uses.
1) The maximum rated output current of the charger. If the phone pulls more, then the charger will only output to the max rated current.
2) The phone will only pull what it is programmed to. There is typically a built in regulator circuit (could be in SW, HW, or a mix). In the case of the Vibrant it looks like it is around ~600mA which is based on the measurements folks have taken with 1A chargers. There is a reason why Samsung provides a 700mA charger for the Vibrant.
This all assumes that Samsung hasn't messed up with the batt_chg_current file value. The only sure way to measure what the phone is pulling is to get a proven >1.2A charger and hang a digital multi-meter in series and measure the current.

Additionally, charging a battery without destroying it, or causing degradation is a science too. You can't just dump as much current as you want into a battery - you have to take into account heat and internal resistance of the battery. Samsung is using the phone's circuitry as the smart part of the battery charger, and they have imposed some sort of upper limit on current. Hot batteries charge slower (if using a smart charger), so it doesn't matter about the amperage of a charger if the battery is hot. If you are doing GPS, Maps, BT and other things in your car, your battery will get hot and charging (even a wall charger) may not keep up with discharge.
The widget is reporting a number in a file - it is not reporting mA - we know this for 2 reasons:
1. someone has measured actual current with Ammeter and posted it along with file values
2. a charger can't put out more current then it is rated for (well maybe one could but not all)
There is still value in buying a 1A charger as most other car chargers just put out the USB amount of 0.5A
I've been doing some reading on this and can't seem to find the proc in sys for current_now...which shows battery drain in mah or micro amps (which ever it reads). That's how the Nexus version of Current Widget shows charge, draw, or a net gain. I'm assuming this is because of the Vibrant Kernel?
I'm trying to take the charge and deduct the current draw to see what my net gain or loss is charging (or discharging). I have gps, bluetooth, display and media going all the time while driving.
If I can't figure it out I'm going to take an AC/DC converter, plug that into the cigarette lighter and just directly wire it to the battery *poof*.

First of all, im sorry if this is not the right thread - please correct me if im in the wrong place?
This is my first post on XDA.
I must say I love this forum, since I just got my first android, HTC legend.
I have no problems with the batterylife on this phone, but it seems like "somthing" is wrong!!??
I have tried the currentwidget and have logged usage (1 minut interval) for a couple og hours. I have logged both mah and apps running. Most of the times it says that im using 90-100 mah when the phone is on standby. It has been down to 12 mah only a few times.
Due to this, im now charging via usb at work, and this is where my problem is. The phone is NOT charge... well i guess its charging, because the orange led is on, the icon is flashing green etc. BUT it keeps saying 64% and it is not going up, it is sometimes going down to 63% even in standby.
To find out if its maybe a faulty usb cable i need to see how much current is going in to my phone when charging, but i cant seem to figure it out, even though all of you say that the currentwidget shows use of current or input from charger - do you know how to do this?
If anybody knows, please help me.

Kinda the wrong thread and the right thread at the same time. The problem is likely due to the USB port on the computer you're charging from. Have you tried charging on a different USB port? Also, if you load the widget while charging, what value is it reporting?
Some USB ports are unpowered, which means they really won't charge anything and some devices won't work on them. Others, for whatever reason, provide only a small amount of power, which may be just enough to keep up with your phone's battery usage but not to actually charge it.

Also possible that it is the cable. Are you using the stock Samsung cable and charger? That combo should get you ~1100 in the widget. If your using adapters or extension cords take them off.
Best way to check for a faulty cable is set the widget to update every second and wiggle around. If you see the current value jumping around a lot (e.g. from 100 to 800/1100) then it is the cable. The cable can have trouble near the micro USB plug or the actual cable itself.
On the USB port make sure that you have the Samsung drivers installed. They are available in the DEV area.
Finally it could be your chargers. I had some really bad/cheap ones that did around 400. I've also had a car charger that started at 1100 and then drop within seconds to <200.
Has anyone passed the information back to the original app developer? I've gotten 3 app updates for the original app since the OP first posted this modified widget. The original app developer is open on supporting other phones.

its too fancey for me, but i dont see why it would have any problems
Bought one - does charging fine for me - don't use it for syncing.
Cons - getting to buttons isn't the easiest when it's docked. It's a bit "fancy" and takes up a fair bit of space on the desk.
Pros - fairly cheap for a dock at the moment. If you feel like a bit of DIY you can remove the black docking section and wiring and put in a smaller stand bit. Next month's job for me.

This is bugging me too. I was actually thinking of picking this up so that it would allow me to switch at the press of a button.

It will probably work, but you'll have same results (charging wise) as on normal USB. Without original Samsung cable, the tab will always open the USB connection window.
BTW; the tab will charge on any USB, even on your computer USB, only thing is it will charge slower. Also, it will state that the battery is not charging, but it will charge just fine anyways.
You may not be able to charge enough to keep the batter at 100% if you're doing some heavy processing on the Tab, but it will prolong the battery life.
You could make one of these for one side of the switch and then it'll switch the Tab to fast-charge. If you have it plugged into a 1A or greater power source, it should charge faster than just the standard usb trickle.
Or if you're feeling adventurous, just open that switch up and put the resistors inline on one of the usb ports itself.

I can charge the tab fine via my pc; although as you mentioned it indeed is much slower rate. I hate having to unplug from computer to power adapter when I want to get a full charge quickly; thus the switchbox idea.
I actually went ahead and order one, although different one from what I listed above. It was only $13 shipped so I figured I'd give it a shot. Also picked up a universal dock / stand. I'll post back how well it works and picts when I get it.

I bought a crappy battery pack from dx.com.
the battery works but makes a horrible noise when connecting the phone to the 2A port ... 1A no problem
also it was cheap, chinese, and labled "power bnak" instead of "bank"... total crap
and then I thought... I have a practically new perfectly good huge capacity 12 cell laptop battery that is just sitting on the shelf doing nothing since I don't carry around my laptop most of the time and its connected to ac power with battery disconnected all the time....
what if I could connect a Usb port directly to the battery?
It could be a really overkill emergency charger!
Anyone knows how this can be done?

It's possible
Some laptops will keep power flowing to USB ports without being fully on- possibly in sleep mode. Recommend doing that if that's the case, although that's quite heavy to carry around just for charging your phone.
A multi meter can tell you what voltages are coming off the laptop battery and radio shack or a local electrical supply store can get you the parts to convert the voltage to the same as the battery on the "power bnak" then it should just be a matter of making sure you have solid connection and plug in - that big of a power source would be great for camping or power outages.

[Q] Mighty AtrixHD/MB886 killed by digitizer & battery replacement?

Hey all,
Before I even start here, please no snide replies about using the search box on here or anywhere... if the answer is out there, I'm at a loss for the keywords to get it. Fair enough? As FYI, bootloader is (was??) unlocked, rooted, and has cwm recovery.
So I dropped my MB886 cracking the screen (round of applause please) and in the process of disassembling the case to install replacement I tore (severed) the battery connection cable. Fast forward to phone now reassembled with new screen and battery installed --> -->
The phone now has a green LED that will respond with blinks to button certain presses i.e. the simulated battery pull, but the device doesn't show up in lsusb output or device manager. I've read of similar problems where the phone has been brought back, and I've read of the exact problem with no solution. Basically the only two things I've really read that supposedly work are battery pull button sequence and using OEM charger/cable to get battery to take a charge.
Unlike, say the Atrix 2 where the lonely white LED is there to serve as a reminder that it is a hard brick and that's all you're ever going to get from it again, I haven't even read that this is in fact the #1 sign device is now a brick. So could someone verify it is or isn't? I've never tried to access a device this way, but Is JTAG an option?
I don't get why this should be, despite battery issue, it's all simple hardware swapping involved here as the software wasn't touched and was 100% working even with cracked screen.

Since it was working before, and since you didn't break anything else (to your knowledge), those are the two things I would check.

hey, thanks for the input. I remember battery connections being snugged when I originally took it apart, and to be honest, short of having a mini torque wrench I don't know I could put them back any closer to that. the digitizer could certainly be either defective or perhaps have a bad connection, and i am certainly willing to test/check for either, however do you know that this would prevent the phone from booting or cause it to only display the green led as a sign of life? something of the "halt on all errors" in pc bios? seems logical that the led would (or could've) been used like the oc speaker and blink out some code relaying you've got a bad O2 sensor or the gas cap isn't tight.
Over tightening can cause problems. So loosen them a bit if it's just-short-of torque wrench tight. I don't know why it does, but I've read people had problems when they over tightened those screws. That green light could be telling you that the battery is connected poorly.
Is there a possibility that the battery is so depleted that it won't charge? For that, you need a factory cable to charge the battery with power off.
Sorry, to clarify, no I just snugged the battery connections when reassembling, I only meant that i don't think i could get them any closer to the way they were originally without aid of something like a torque wrench.
As for battery charge as a potential issue... to be fair, I only have a OEM Moto wall charger and I think the cable I am using is Samsung. Surely the cable itself isn't the weak link in this chain? A car battery on a multimeter reading 12.0 volts is something like 50% charged and about 12.8 volts is looking pretty good, anyone know what I should get out of the 3.8V Li-Ion on a meter?
PS I double checked the both data cable connections to the motherboard, so I doubt just a bad connection is to blame here.

You should get from 3.8 to 4.1.

When I say "factory" cable, I'm not talking about the cable that came with the phone. There is a special Motorola cable (that you can even make yourself) that can charge your phone in situations when your phone is normally not willing to accept a charge.

Scratch my previous answer. Seems I misunderstood what a "factory cable" is for. It can't actually charge your battery, instead it is used to power the phone so that you can flash/diagnose it, even when your battery is dead. Normally, you need a working phone to charge the battery (with the stock "charging cable").
This information may or may not help you. At the very least, using a "factory cable" may allow you to power your phone on, which would tell you whether the problem is your battery or the phone.

well, i'll take it regardless... i've acquired one of these mythical factory cables and it gets me into fastboot and recovery, so i'd wager, even though i haven't seen it, that it would boot all the way. so being that i don't have either the original charger (although have one that's motorola) or cable (samsung), my best bet is probably just find a store that has both an OEM motorola charger and cable even if they're not for the MB886? surely one for a moto x would work to charge battery, no?
or is this like a chicken and egg problem i now have? a catch 22? i can't charge the battery without a working phone, and i can't have a working phone without a charged battery? golly gee, anybody out there with an MB886 want to charge my battery for me? can i just hotwire the battery to a couple of leads from a charger and bypass using the phone as the charging device? at least to give the battery say 15%-20% to get something to happen... like get this rain cloud perpetually parked above me to blow over from above my head for a day or two maybe?
so, with phone plugged in with "factory cable" here's what i get and when... the phone bootloops on the "bootloader unlocked" warning screen if i don't press anything. volume down gets me fastboot, volume up gets me recovery. phone shows up in both and takes commands... so is it possible i just need to restore a nandroid backup, or is the battery charge the better bet now? i would just try the nandroid for $h!ts and giggles, but the last one i have isn't as fresh as i'd like, but is certainly usable if i must.

Any generic USB charging cable SHOULD be good enough to charge and flash your phone, especially a Motorola cable. I'm currently using an old Blackberry cable for everything. They should be all the same. In rare instances, a cheap cable may give you issues (I think I had a cable from an old Samsung phone that I couldn't get to work right).
I guess just keep trying until you find one that works. Hate to tell you to go spend $20+ on an official Motorola charger...
Regarding your battery, yes you may be in a bit of a pickle. I've never had to do it, but I've read of users who had to short some leads in order to directly charge the battery. Trying searching through the forums, I'm sure the info is here.

All hope is lost, I am now looking for a replacement.
Ok, so here's where I am at with this now... As we're basically talking about any regulated power supply that can put out an excess of (around) 3.8V and 800mA I've opted to use an old ATX computer power supply and wired the mini B USB end of a cable known to have in fact to have charged this very phone... nothing. I have also, for sake of hope, even tried using the wall wort from an iPad (which puts out a cool 5.1V and up to 2.1A). The green LED will shut off after a while of being plugged into said charger, but still no booty action.
As stated before, the phone still works with the factory cable.
So, I gather from this that...
A. some hardware component (i.e. resistor, etc...) on my phones board that is involved in the charging process has gone kaput.
or
B. There is some software flag flipped somewhere that could be unflipped with or without some trickery to what actually is VS what I want the phone to think it's seeing.
Anyone have any thoughts on this or something similar pertaining to B as a course of action?
*update to my update* ... umm, which should now be up to date??
I did a complete wipe of the phone (/system, /data, /data/media, /cache, and /dalvik-cache) and reinstalled the rom... and still nothing.

Connect usb c directly to the battery

I got this used moto g6 xt1925-12 and it's having an issue where it's not charging in any normal mode
It does charge in fastboot mode but only up to 70%
There are no charger or cable issues as I already verified it and works with another phone
I am thinking there some chip or control device that is not recognizing the usb when I plug it in in normal mode so I was wondering if I could bypass whatever is controlling it and connect it directly to the battery
If I had a schematic I would try to see what is controlling it and perhaps replace it if that is even available on the market but without that I have to use brute force
So I was wondering if there are any electronics experts or perhaps someone who knows how a usb c is generally implemented in a phone or more specifically in the moto g6

Even though you verified that your charger and cable both work with another phone, I would still try different combinations of cables and chargers. Various things can happen to both cables and chargers that render them less effective (a cable can have one internal wire fail, a charger can have a resistor fail, etc. etc.). Also, some devices are more persnickety about the power they receive than others. My GoPro Hero 5 Black was able to charge its battery and interface with my computer through a USB type C cord that didn't work with my Moto G6 at all.
That said, I can't offer much help additionally. Given the cost of a Moto G6, I doubt it's worth hours of soldering to get your battery working normally again. You might want to look into a replacement battery from eBay, but even then, you might still have issues because as you said, there could be a fault with one of the chips that manages charging. Allowing the battery to fully discharge once or twice might be worth trying.

The phone I verified with is the exact same model xt 1925-12 so I am sure the charging system outside of the phone is fine I also bought a new battery and just plugged it in to see if that makes any difference which it did not and just last week I replaced the charge port and while that looked a little dirty and was missing one pin on the end which upon looking at a pinout found out to be a ground pin of which there is more than one so of course that did not make any difference
I understand it's a cheap phone I just like to get to the bottom of the problem if I can and perhaps do a little troubleshooting inside the phone
There has to some chip inside that controls everything since it's charging in fastboot mode but not in any other mode
I just have to try it and see what happens

I think I found something that may be a little safer than a direct jumper
I came across a video on Youtube where the guy installed a diode The video was about fake charging so that's not exactly my problem and it was on an older phone with micro USB and not USB C but in theory this may work
There was also another video on changing the ic charge ic on an Iphone 6 which was a BGA I am not even sure where the charge ic is located on the Moto G6 but if it's a BGA I don't want to mess with it unless I have to plus it's probably not even available to buy anywhere so I think I will go with the diode method first and see if that does anything
