[Q] App2Ext on Milestone - CyanogenMod 6.1.2 - 0.12 - Motorola Droid and Milestone Q&A, Help & Troublesh

Hello guys!
I have a Milestone and I'm using the CM6 ROM from milaq which is pretty good!
It has the scripts to make App2Ext works built in: 05mountsd and 07app2ext.
I partitioned my sd card like this: 6 GB to FAT32 and 2 GB to EXT3.
Just this and everything works, because I saw the "/sd-ext" in the ES Explorer. When I installed some apps at "Internal Memory", this apps appeared inside the "/sd-ext" folder.
But, some things seems to be strange for me:
1. When I went to "Seetings > SD card & phone storage > Internal phone storage", the "Total space" doesn't change. I mean, the "Total space" from "Internal phone storage" continued with 197MB like before activate App2Ext. Is this right? The space from ext partition shouldn't be understood as "Internal phone storage"?
2. The phone seems more unstable. I had some reboots when I was installing some apps and sometimes some widgets doesn't load. Is it normal?
3. My method is it ok? Just to create the ext partition. Should I make some other things?
Thanks!

1. Correct. Internal space is not ext space.
2. Widgets cannot be installed on ext partition. It has to be on internal memory.
3. Yes.

But when I activate the ext partition, how can I do to install apps at "Internal Storage"?
I mean, after I activated the ext partition, all the apps were installed over there.
The "Manage Applications" say those apps are installed at "Internal Storage".
Thanks for reply!

You have to move it using apps like rootexplorer.

Some friends with other phones (like galaxy 5) activated App2Ext and the "Internal Memory" goes up!
Why this doesn't happen on Milestone?

That's probably becoz dalvik-cache is moved to ext partition as well. Milaq's CM6 uses CM7 app2ext which leaves dalvik cache in internal memory and only moves data apps to ext partition.

Yes, you have to modify the script to do that. Check this link for the modified script.

I need your help guys: For the first time I need to install many apps and the 190MB aren't enough. So I wanted to use apps2ext. Since I've never used it before I don't know where to start. (Format card, what to install then, if any scripts are needed, etc.)
Is there any guide somewhere?
Sorry if this has been answered before (I'm pretty sure it has... )
Thank you for your time.

Which rom? Have you partitioned your card?
This might help. Read instructions carefully before trying.

You don't need to do anything. The rom has app2ext built-in. You just need to create the ext partition.
Also note that CM7 based roms don't move the dalvik-cache to ext partition. You need to modify the script to do it. I have posted a modified script for that in the same thread. Check the last 2 pages.

@sileshn:
1. Are there some special reason to original script don't move dalvik-cache to ext?
2. What's your recommendation? Moving or not?
3. What do you think about Darktremor App2SD?

Hi, I use froyomod 2.9.3 and I used to use i&f 4 but, I saw better performance on tfm so I switched over, I used to have an ext4 partition but none of the apps showed so I went back made a list and dloaded them again. But the internal memory kept dropping every time I installed an app. w 70 apps my int mem only had 19 megs left. But my ext partition still had 100 mb left (verified using free space- krikun). Please help cuz I cant install any more apps

[Q] Number application limit ?

Is there any limit to the number of application that can be installed to this device?
I'm using app2sd Amarullz script. I've tried Darktremor and also s2e.
But after I installed a lot of applications (only takes about 200MB of my ext partition), I can't install anything more. Everytime I tried, it always get reboot while installing.
but after I remove some apps, I can install it.
i had like 304 apps installed...but no reboot when tried to add new ones...in fact the only thing that happened to me was extreme lags
what a2sd u are using?

sorry I kinda curious what happened to me...

If you mean the ext partition, it isn't. I have 1.28GB ext partition and I've just used around 200MB.
is it because I also use swap?

yes, after I uninstall some, I can install some. That's why i think the problem is application number or too much partition size that the device can't handle?
I've make a smaller partition of ext4. now it's about 800MB.

why u change u'r partition?

I've opened Root Explorer and open /sd-ext. It's r/w.
that's should be right that, isn't it?
I have more than 250 apps, and i'm having problems - launcher forced close.
Problems disappear if i remove - or quarantine/freeze - apps.
Seeem to me that it's worst with apps that scan for apps list - titanium backup, or others apps manager.
I do not use any a2sd progs - just the native 'move to sd' feature, with the hack to bypass original settings, used to mov e in SD freezed (unused) apps.
Another - separate - issue is memory occupation...
Seem to me that updating apps do not remove the older apps - this is surely true with ROM apps - so i get a lot of memory wasted.
Another - separate - issue is RAM, or run-time memory... Android should manage it on its own - but still i'm not so confident that errors do not occurs with heavy load.
I thinj maybe the prob is your sdcard. Try purchase highend sdcard like classt10

I highly recommend using CMW for making the partition. I've had some problems making them through my PC. With CMW you just set the amount of size you want it and wait till its done.
Then install S2E.
yea its better to make it by cwm and its very easy....
but make sure you have the backup of you sdcard before partitioning...
Hey ! I just googled about partitioning sd card and found that CWM may brick your phone.. is it true ?

If your phone is rooted, follow these steps -
1) Download root explorer or file manager app from market.
2) Open the app
3) Go to system/app
4) Delete the following files
swype.apk
thinkdroid.apk or thinkfree.apk if you dont use thinkfree office(something like that, i dont remember the exact name)
youtube.apk
fmradio.apk and fmradio.odex
voicesearch.apk
voicerecorder.apk and voicerecorder.odex
etc..
Delete these files only if you dont use all these apps. Don't blame me later on.

Apps disappearing from EXT4 partition
Hi everyone. Since I see that at least part of this thread seems to be talking about Link2SD, I wondered whether anyone might be able to offer some insight into the problem I am experiencing.
Before that however, let me explain that I started off with an 8GB micro SD card with a 500MB EXT4 partition. I had been fast running out of space in the internal phone memory, and my SD drive itself was also filling up fast. When I installed Link2SD I managed to regain a considerable amount of free space on the internal memory.
The problem is though that once I had linked the majority of my apps to the EXT4 partition and backed up the device in that condition with CWM, once I rebooted the system all the apps that were linked had disappeared. However there are still some 244MB of files on the EXT4 partition that Link2SD says are in use, and I cannot delete them.
I then purchased a 16GB micro SD card from Samsung, and tried to restore the CWM backup to that card....my apps were missing apart from the few that remained on the FAT32 partition and in the phone memory....I should mention that this also happened before I installed the CM7.1 ROM.
Now things have really become problematic. I decided to remove quite a few apps, then download the latest version of Link2SD from the apps Market. But although there is now plenty of space on all partitions I keep getting the 'insufficient storage available' message, and I cannot install anything. I also did a CWM restore on the original 8GB SD card with the same result. This is why I cannot lay the blame fully on Link2SD, as there has to be a glitch somewhere in my installation.
FreeSpace [Root] shows the following on the 8GB based system:
Cache free space 20.7MB
Data free 16.6MB
Ext free 265.0MB
SD-card free 959.1MB
System free 48.2MB
So what gives? I really don't understand what's going on. I am running the latest CM7.1-RC1 Cooper-Grif ROM build number GWK74, with Kernel version 2.6.35.7-CL-562111 [email protected]#1 with all updates necessary. This is costing me more time than I can afford to lose on this, and I really need to find a solution once and for all, preferable without having to reinstall everything again from scratch, which is what I intend doing once the official Cyanogen Mod becomes available finally.
Thanks in advance, and apologies for the long post.

Make partition in cwm yet easy but...it will format your sd...on minitool is better if u have lots of thing on your sd...
regards,
•ƒγяύs ργяσ™•
I got some problems doing this. This is what I did:
I had many apps installed and moved to SD (8gb class 4), so I made a backup of the SD content.
I formatted it, and created 2 partitions (6.8gb and 515mb) using Minitool Partition Wizard. Both are primary and FAT32 (if I create the 2nd partition as EXT2 the phone says SD is damaged).
Moved my backup content again to the 6.8gb partition and rebooted the phone.
Looks like everything is right but Link2SD says "second partition not found".
What IM doing wrong?
Would Link2SD detect that 2nd partition if I flash my phone and I start installing apps now that my SD has 2 partitions?
IMHO from what I've experience, Link2sd does not accept fat partitions. I had the same problem.
Are you looking for the correct type of partition?
Start Link2sd>menu>More>recreate mount scripts and choose FAT32/FAT16

I don't quite understand what script are you talking about. Is it the one in the CWM. Anyway can I ask how to move app or dalvik cache to SD-ext? I tried moving apps from data/app to sd-ext/app/ and all my apps doesnt work? I think I need the S2E app but I don't think andro-Id can download it. I checked yagya's blog and it says I got to flash it in CWM and someone says that it's not working. Is there other ways to move it?

what did u select in CWM ext3 or ext4 ???
It did not ask me to select anything. It just say 100+mb 200+mb and others. And i already selected ext4 and i linked all the apps i want but it still doesn't free space at the internal memory. Is this how im suppos to move the apps?

you should buy a bigger sdcard 100 MB space is like nothing even the internal memory is around 178 MB
and it should not be sd-ext 2 it should be 3 or 4

1) create a partition using CWM in advance section of recovery(swap size 0 M) 512 mb is sufficient
2)download app link2sd from market
3)open it...and choose partition type of ur choice (ext4 works well )
4)finally click on any app saved in internal memory and click on CREATE LINK
5)You are done!
Ask if any problem...
Press thanks if i helped
Ext2/Ext3 is pretty much the same using default settings (unless you enable journaling in ext3). Ext4 adds journaling.
Ext2 is the most friendly for SD life. Ext4, not as much, but it has other perks (GIYF).
Also, you might want to show apps installed on the SD Card, select them all then Create Link first. It'll save you some extra space and re-enable widgets if available. Then you can move your internal apps if you want.

Ext2/Ext3 is pretty much the same using default settings (unless you enable journaling in ext3). Ext4 adds journaling.
Ext2 is the most friendly for SD life. Ext4, not as much, but it has other perks (GIYF).

I didn't understand what did u mean by show apps installed on SD card and select them, create link.. Do I have to Create link also for apps already stored in SD card..
And, I think Ext3 will be the best for.. what say?

Once you have Link2SD installed, you can select "SD Card" as a filter. It will show all apps installed on the SD card. It would be a good idea to link these apps ("Create Link") (thus moving them back to phone storage, and then again to the SD Card, but to the 2nd partition this time) for three reasons:
You can move the dalvik-cache as well, which means you'll save extra space.
If the app has widgets, you'll be able to use them again (e.g. SoundHound).
Should you mount your SD card to the PC, the apps will still be available since the 2nd partition doesn't get mounted.
I've tested Link2sd.. Only Ext2 gets detected and mounted to be used in Link2sd.. Ext3/4 doesn't get mounted.( I'm using the Stock kernel)
On stock kernels ext3 and ext4 not always work, fat32 or ext2 always work. Its ok, won't make a real difference, the class of the sd card has way more impact on performance.
If you want you can create partition (with ext4) with minitool partition on your pc. (see this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=SD_card_partitioning)
Same problem, even if partition is formatted as ext4, Link2SD defaults to ext2. I have had a few times where it loses link by itself and all linked apps stops working.
Ext4
If you want to get your ext4 mounted. You must make a partition as ext4 to (I use partition wizard).. Not ext3, or ext2, or either..
I am sorry for my bad english..

I've had this especially when restoring nandroid backups. The 05mountsd script in the init.d folder of some roms creates a conflict with Link2sd. Simply delete that script, problem solved.

I did format it as EXT4 with MiniTool but mounts as EXT2 on Link2SD upon reboot even after choosing EXT4.

I don't have and Init.d support or scripts

Low memory with CronMod on CyanogenMod.

I have CyanogenMod 7.2 on my phone with CronMod memory mod. My internal memory shows that I still have 456 MB of space from my 758 MB ext4 partition. Yet phone show info that I have low storage space. Why?
Which script did you use?
CronMod-INT2EXT4+

That's really weird. It's not supposed to happen. Though I have had some issues like that, it's because you know some parts of the app stay in the internal memory of the phone, they have to be manually moved to the SD over time. Since it's a really small amount of storage that that part of the app takes, it really shouldn't be a problem. But since you have a lot of them installed, you're gonna have to manually move the apps to the SD.
Use Titanium Backup and batch move the heaviest apps you have to the SD and it'll work normally.

are you sure your EXT partition is EXT4? Make sure cuz CWM formats the EXT partition to EXT 3.
Try Cronmod Int2ext+
I am sure

Just use the normal INT2EXT+ with the CWM made partition.

I heard that for every use of 500mb of external memory we need 100mb internal memory as it store some files every time we install a app...

Swap and A2SD are two completely different and non related subjects.

Sorry, I'm just having no luck getting the fixed IN2EXT4+ to work on an international galaxy ace. the script creates a file in the init.d folder, as opposed to the unfixed version, but it still doesn't mount or recognise the ext partition on the SD card. I've followed your guides very closely, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong...
after each attempt, i start from scratch (clean ROM install), and yet I keep failing ;/
I partition using CWM recovery 5, so does that create an ext4 partition or 3/lower?
Thanks for your time

Really. You really haven't noticed it. Look at the script you're flashing and the one on my guide.

Ive used in2ext+, int2ext4+ and in2extv2+ with identical results. I know I must be annoying you, and I'm really sorry that I am, But I just can't see what I'm doing wrong here?

What rom/phone are you using? You should have NO problems if you follow everything exactly the way it is.
