Iv noticed since the last OTA update for sprint that my tab will no longer allow me to keep the screen on while charging. I've flashed 2 other roms with the same issue. One being the stock rom + root. And the other is oldmacnut v1 of his cmda sprint rom. Can anyone confirm this is an issue for them as well?
I would have posted directly on oldmacnuts thread but I dont have 10 posts yet.
thanks in advance!
This is a good place to post the question. Are you refering to the red x on the battery icon when on usb or usb/cig charger? If so, I think its more a ui feedback thing than an actual change in the way the rom charges. We have had a few tabs at work that froze up on froyo because they ran gps nav constantly with screen on while connected to usb cig charger. I have been on both roms you are referring to and have not had any issues charging on wall charger or usb. I do get the red x and it seems slow to charge on usb.
Hope this helps!

Guess I've never needed to keep my screen on while charging... Tpike is right though.. Even with the red x.. It's still charging, just slowly..

Its not that, iv read about that change with the last update
This is connected to charger that came with it. And is enabled to stay on while charging. After "X" time, whatever i have the screen time out set to is when it goes fully off. Not Dim like my Evo. Sure I could change the time out setting and set it extremely high but I rather this function normally. Hopefully ill have 10 posts soon Thanks for the reply's so far guys!
there is also a way to modify a cable to get around the red x when charging and having the tablet on. You have to cut the cable and rearrange the leads a bit, but it works to get a faster charge from USB etc. Do a search for USB charging and you should come up with a couple threads that go over exactly what you need to do. Only downside is modifying the cable it will only charge and not connect to the pc any longer so it's best if you have an extra cable to do this with.
Thanks for the information on the cable. But again this is a settings issue with the GB update sprint sent out.
The unit is connected to the 2000mamp charger. The icon is green and states its 100% charged.
The issue is the following setting:
Settings>Applications>Development>Stay Awake > This box is checked to stay awake while charging. The tab is no longer doing this with any version of EF17 iv flashed. Can anyone else running EF17 (From sprint) confirm this?
Yes you are right mine wont stay awake.

Having the same problem with my Samsung tab!
Hi rock2702,
How were you able to solve your Galaxy Tab charging problem?
maybe he deleted the batterystats or installed betterbatterystats
Or (re)installed a custom ROM.
What was your solution if you don't mind?
well, this is how i solved it...
if it's rooted...
use battery calibrator....
or keep tab switched off for 4 hours or so...and then connect it to charger while switched off
if this also doesn't help then after connecting to charger while it's still off you can see a battery icon charging...simultaneously press switch on button and touch the screen ....if on aokp rom your tab will instantly reboot as i've noticed....if on stock rom which i was on when this thing happened to me....your tab will show a black screen and then again the battery charging icon shoots up....
One of the above things worked for me....i was enjoying my vacations when i encountered this problem and so i cannot remember exactly which of these things worked....
Hit thanks if i've helped..
Battery Not Charging
Well i don't know much about this, but it happen also on my SGT7 P1000 tab. What was notice is, if Usage (mA) value is below zero/negative value during charger plug-in. the battery won't charge. What i do is to turn off the screen an leave the tab on that mode, then battery charging start to increase.
Any one can give explaination on this situation?

The battery in our phone is faulty...this is whats i heard...
But this problem is due to faulty battery stats..
If this problem never happened again then you are quite lucky
I had noticed that the battery increases but after an increase of 20% it again stops.....
But the solutions I gave worked fully without any probs...

my same issue....
is caused by not using original samsung wall charger...when i use a different brand charger, none of my tabs charge unless i turn them off. i purchased extra one from samsung just in case my original breaks or gets lost. Cable is hard to find made by anyone besides samsung (RETAIL). In fact, most samsung accessories are easier to find online than in stores....I think rooting and using different roms affects the way tab reacts to the charger. thats my 2 cents.

Yes, we must use the original charger but the problem stated above clearly shows that it's due to faulty battery stats......
If you have noticed this......charge the battery to full 100% and then notice the battery stats it spontaneously drops down to 99% in a sec....that's due to our battery stats I guess..
Again keep battery on overnight charging...sometimes this happens...
The battery drops down from 99 to 1 % and then you have to restart phone and battery stats are back to 99...that's a battery stats prob

For some time to time since CM9 (1 time each month maybe) my tablet does not charge anymore with any chagrer, I tried restock, tried a lot of thing but the only thing that seems to work is charge it on usb of a computer (low speed charge) up to full charge (a night) which is in my case 99%.
Most of time it fixes the problem untill it happen again, but enerally It's ok for weeks.
I've got two GT7 and only one seems to have this problem with the same rom on it, so I think it is device related.
Hope this help
The charging problem is here the same...
With screen off i could load battery over night yesterday to 100%... plug th charger of and battery drops down to 46%.
Will try the usb loading with pc at work now
Howdy all, long time cappy user and now I'm running into a problem that i can't solve. I'm hoping others have encountered this problem and can provide a solution.
When my phone is completely powered off, a grey battery icon intermittently and will continually flash when the phone is unplugged. Normally i wouldn't care but in this instance, i can NOT power the phone back on unless i plug the phone into a power source. When i plug the phone in, instead of getting the green horizontal battery indicating it's charging, i get a white battery instead that's vertical.
This creates an inconvenient problem because if i encounter an instance where i either A) need to do a battery pull, B) 3 button hold to reboot or C) the phone randomly turns off, unless my charger is near, I'm screwed. No matter what combination of buttons i push when the phone is powered off, it will not power on from an off state unless it's plugged in and i get the white battery indicating it's charging.
Some background info..I noticed this happening when I initially started flashing JB ROM's. I've odined with every package out there, replaced my battery, flashed several different ROM'S and nothing has fixed this issue.
Thanks for reading and a bigger thanks to anyone that can offer some insight.
TLDR; Phone, when in an off state and unplugged, shows an intermittently flashing grey battery and will NOT turn on unless connected to power source.

Hey, sorry I don't have an actual answer for you, but I can throw this in-- I'm also running JB on my Captivate (Slim Bean 2.7 atm, having previously run SB 2.6 and Cyanogen 10, 10/03), and I also notice some weirdness with the charger. The main thing is, the phone no longer seems to notice when the charger is connected. It actually charges, so it hasn't been too big of a deal, but the battery status still *says* "discharging", and once it's fully charged up, the battery statistics don't reset like they did on Gingerbread. This has only been an issue once-- I ran the battery all the way down to where the phone turned itself off. So I plugged in the charger and restarted it. It came up, briefly, only to complain about the battery and immediately shut itself down again-- it didn't realize the charger was connected. With the phone off, but the charger plugged in, the screen just stayed black. I didn't get the green battery icon that GB used to give when it was charging while off. However, it did charge, and I was able to restart it fine in the morning.
So again, sorry that's not a solution, but it does seem there's something weird about the charger recognition.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure it's not my cable. It's the same cable I've been using for two years, and it worked fine with GB.

Unfortunately, I plugged it in one night running Gingerbread and it worked fine, upgraded to JB the next day, plugged it in that night and got this issue. It would be a mighty big coincidence for a hardware problem to have developed just then. But I guess it's not impossible.

Yeah, i agree with you. It's so tough to pin down these little oddities that occur with these phones because not all phones are manufactured with the same components. It appears Samsung used whatever was on sale during that period of time of production

Hello,
First off, I have googled over the last 3 days for a fix, I have also searched these forums so forgive me if I have overlooked something.
I got a ReFurbished Droid 3 as a replacement for my old device(HTC Trophy) from Verizon Tech Support. I can not keep this device powered up! I have factory reset from within Privacy, and also from recovery. The device does this at random times and within 3 minutes of me pushing the power button. Sometimes during bootup(Where the Red Moto logo is) it will shutdown. Sometimes during the boot animation. Finally, if I somehow get the lucky chance of making it into the launcher, I usually get 30 seconds or 2 minutes. I tried to verify that the battery is working by downloading and installing a Battery app to check the voltage and see if the battery is bad, and there is no significant drain happening when not charging. Also, in the fastboot menu, Battery Status says "OK". So I have narrowed this down to being a PHONE issue and NOT a battery issue.
The device is on the 5.7.906 or w/e the newest firmware is. The phone does not feel hot. Also, in the recovery menu, I could probably leave the phone on that screen forever or until the battery would drain without the first reboot.
So the questions:
1. Is there a fix for this?
I fear that the replacement Droid 3 that is being sent to me is going to do the same, seeing as to how I got a replacement Trophy and it was doing the same as my old Trophy(Loved this phone). So this is going to be the 3rd device that Verizon has sent me and I really need a phone for work.
2. If I can install a custom ROM, would that help at all?
If this is a software issue, I would imagine grabbing any of the roms would fix this phone.
3. I know this is a known issue, but are there clues to maybe point towards a fix that needs to be done?
Maybe if I knew what the problem was(e.x. line 32 of build.prop says 'y' instead of 'x') and no one knew how to fix that, I could try to figure a way out to fix it.
Thanks for the help,
-Peperm1nt

yes, it goes to the charging screen when it is plugged up while powered off and shows 100%. I'll give the SBF a shot. A different device is being sent out and should be here Monday. Thanks.
ok, good that charge screen works
one thing you could do, is see how long battery lasts, in android recovery or AP Fastboot
should be hours, not really sure, though
Well, I was going to try and SBF but I don't wanna chance it now.. I did a Fastboot test and the device still randomly shuts down. Couldn't make it past 2 minutes. Guess I'll wait on the other phone.
my guess is battery is bad, bad connection, or hardware failure

When I plug my S3 into the charger of a night time and let it do its thing, part way through the night after it has fully charged the S3 comes off charge and then lights the room up a few seconds later when it goes back on to charge (and will repeat this several times throughout the night). I have used the same charger on my S2 and it works fine, just seems to be my S3. I have done a factory reset (as told by samsung) still not changed the issue. The only thing that I could think that may be causing the issue (it only seems to be a recent problem) is that I am using the supplied charger, but with an extension on the usb plug. Could that be the problem why it will not remain on charge for the duration of the night??? Please help my missus is threatening to throw it out the window because it wakes her up
Happened to me too all the time when I was on stock rom. Waked me up several times at night.
When I flashed cyanogenmod the problem was gone.

probably should have clarified that. I am using the stock rom too atm. I was trying to find a solution to this without having to modify the system (custom roms etc) but thankyou for your suggestion...
Mine does it too if I use a non Samsung charger.

I wondered if it may have been the charger, as I was still using my charger from my nexus S which charges the GS2 just fine. It started having issues so I replaced it with my GS3 charger (with a USB extension - powerpoint a long way from where I need it to be). Have taken the extension away tonight. Will see what happens now. Could using a different micro USB lead (ie not the one supplied with the GS3) cause this issue anyone???
Thanks to all those ppl thus far for your help, appreciated....
In my experience, I'm using the bettery power bank to charge my phone and have to use the normal micro usb cable to charge it instead of using the original cable.
It depends on what power source I'm using it as well. The original cable works fine with the AC chargers but not with the power bank bettery pack. It used to work well with battery pack though.

Pocketlint can build inside of the microusb connector.
Use a thin toothpick to clean out the lint.
Thanks for all the replies guys, I am thinking that I may have solved the problem (didn't see the room light up like a xmas tree last night!) Will persist for a few more days, but I have removed the USB extension cable from the equation. Hopefully that solves the problem. If anyone has had a similar experience could you please let me know.
Thanks all for your suggestions....

So an update. I sent my phone in to Samsung to repair and apparently the main board was faulty, it was replaced and sent back. Charged it last night and low and behold it still lights up the room. Anyone with a stock ROM experienced this?

Yes. I wiped and did the same on advice from Samsung did nothing except wipe all my settings. It seems to me...
It seems to me that the charging problem only happens when there are notifications waiting. As long as there are no notifications waiting, the red LED is on and the phone charges just fine. When a notification comes in and the blue LED starts flashing, charging stops or slows to a crawl or starts discharging. The longer this condition continues, the hotter the phone gets. After clearing the notifications, the red LED comes back on and the phone starts charging normally.
This seems to happen with Samsung chargers and off brand chargers.
Again, I don't know if this really happening. It just seems to all coincide.
my charging problem is (somehow) solved...
I have my battery charging problem solved this way:
On Stock ROM I wasn´t able to charge at a descent rate (10h+). Neither made a difference if the system was turned on or off.
For my solution you will need a kindle MicroUSB charger with 5.0V 0.85A output - or simmilar (?!) This perfoms best with my setting. No other MicroUSB-charger worked for me!
I then did the following:
1. Installed ClockworkMod 6.0.3.2 touch
2. installed CyanogenMod_10.1_2013_05_07 plus an additional openpdroid framework patch.
3. installed GAPPS 20130301
4. Siyah Kernel v1.9.1
5. installed STweaks (from Playstore) - this one is important
6. open STweaks and go to MISC / AC CHARGE and changed it to 1200mA
7. from now on use a KINDLE charger to charge my S3
Now my S3 charges perfectly when turned on. If I turn it off the system still loads the battery VERY slow. So I guess It might have to do with something in the kernel / bootloader.
Hope this helps others.
Does anyone have found out how to speed up charging time when the system is off?
Hey guys anyone experiencing problems with fast charging not working, tried using the moto fast charge cable and charger and still nothing. Seems. Like after the Roger update it only works like 20 percent of the time
I have the same problem after I updated my note 5. I'm just waiting for Google to push another update to fix their f*#$ up.
Yes, works most of the time (90% of the time). Using all equipment that came with phone. Fast charging hasn't worked probably 4 times over the past month. Will unplug/plug back in a few times then magically starts working.
no issues on Rogers here
So I went to the AT&T place to see what the problem was. The guy there switched the wall adapter that went with my charger to a newer one of the same model, and my fast charging capabilities came back. The fix was simple. The problem was in my Travel Adapter.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using XDA Free mobile app
I do not know if that will help you but to be sure if fast charging is working or not, you need to plug it in and turn it off. Then, you should have 3 green LED lights flashing. If only one is flashing, then it is normal charge. If 3 are flashing, then this is the fast charging.
