Hey guys,
My warranty for my captivate ends 08/23 and my phone has stopped charging.
I checked if it would charge with different USB cables and chargers but it still won't charge. So I guess it's a hardware problem.
The phone was dropped once probably from 5 ft. to rough concrete(Im 6'1 btw).
I had a skinomi screen protector since I had this phone so the screen is fine.
It has some minor scratches around the phone but you can hardly see them.
The scratches in the pictures below is what's making ask this question.

I would like to know if AT&T would consider this physical damage? Don't want to send the phone and be charged because of this.
Also I have a Device support center in my area.
Should I replace it by phone or should I visit the support center?
Well, that one is pretty iffy. My experiences with AT&T is that if you take it to a support center, it really depends who happens to be working the desk. They could look at it and replace it, or tell you that it is too damaged and "abused" and you are basically out of luck. Over the phone may work a little better, because you could mitigate (or bend the truth, whichever phrasing you prefer) the amount of damage, and the call warranty centers *seem* to replace just about anything. So it's really up to you.
Also, did it stop charging before or after you dropped it? That one could matter. You could also lie ahem bend the truth.
I replaced my hard bricked Cappy yesterday at a customer support center, they looked at it for 2 minutes and then decided it was "dead". So if that's anything for you, take it or leave it.
I dropped it months before this problem started. Ill probably go tomorrow to the service center. If they can't replace it ill just hard brick it and replace it over the phone.
Thanks

I had the same issue with a return then got a case (body glove) dropped it several times aand no visible damage. At any rate I ended up having to do the return over the phone.
Edit: also, with the case on my phone has been thrown atleast 20ft down an asphalt road with no visible damage still. I didn't throw the phone by the way. Long story lol.

Ive been running stock for two weeks already. My power button was stuck and I couldnt get into download mode. Then one day it got unstuck and I didn't want to take any chances so I flashed stock. Stock is killing me lol
Thanks for your responses

Yeah, if you really want it replaced, I would go ahead and hard brick it. Just flash a bad bootloader and you're good xD. Isn't it scary that we know how to break these things better then we know how to fix them?
I couldnt replace it cause the usb cover is broken they said it voids the warranty.
Luckily I got the mobile insurance but now I have to pay $125 to replace it.
I'll make sure to take care of the replacement
Yea that's what I said. Accidents happen though and I use my phone way too much for these things not to happen. Get a case! Bodyglove ftw!

my phone won't vibrate when it turns on or when receiving texts or calls. even if i switch it to vibrate it won't. if i shake the phone a bit before i make a panel selection i get a click from inside the phone when i select the panel. it's like it wants to work but it won't work all the way. anyone else had this problem? if so how do i fix it? this is frustrating. thanks for any help
EDIT: (just so you don't have to search through the whole thread)
Found out that the problem was HTorch. I used it for only a few minutes on high power and it melted the Led on top of the vibrator motor and locked it down. Heed these words, comrades. Take special care not to use htorch on its bright setting. cheers
if hardreset dont do anything then
i would say that it's a hardware malfuntion

me too!
There's a thread where someone else had the same problem, more than likely the motor has burnt itself out or the weight/cam has dropped off the end of the shaft (LOL). More than likely a return to SE/your provider to get it fixed.
God you just jinxxed mine! Vibration is dead now. Nothing on calls texts or anything. Even when I go into sound panel to test it doesn't work.
Just done a hard reset and nothing.
Looks like a service job already....

I sent my X1 to service last week because of the same problem.
christ... that sucks you guys! i'm gonna attempt to open mine up and see if what squidgyb said about the cam falling off the motor might be the case. report back later

that piece that looks crooked with a yellowish square piece on it shouldn't be crooked. it should only be occupying that blue rectangular space. it seems to have overheated and melted itself out of place. if you look here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWDurQrRt-Y&feature=related
at 2:26 you see what it should look like on the right side of the camera. it's new resting place is (guess where ) snug on top of the cam and motor. it's locked down. i would just like to know what it is and why or how it overheated. it seems like a simple fix... if i knew where to buy that black plastic thingy that is now melted. i just figured this was some interesting info to share. i really can't go without my phone for however long it would take for them to repair and ship it back to me so if any of you know of a place online that i can buy xperia parts, feel free to post a link. thanks you guys
that's the one...
Good job in finding out what it was. However, I didn't pay good money to fix it myself so it's going back to O2
O2 have no stock and are giving me the 'sometime next week' crap again. Then he said go into a shop and see if they can fix it as it may be software.
Looks like I will re-flash the ROM back to normal and then bring it into a store. Then it's either send off for repair or wait for stock. My Jedi senses are telling me that I am going to kick off very soon....
i thought about what i asked earlier about someone posting a link to buy replacement parts and then i remembered that parts shortage they went through that delayed everything. if sony/htc can't even get the parts they need to make the phones, then how am i supposed to get the extra parts that i need to fix mine lol so despite my impatience, i guess i'll have to send it back
Vodafone or O2 figurine?

best thing really, you don't expect to pay all that amount of money for a phone that is 99% working. This is my first SonyEricsson that I have sent back within 3 weeks for a hardware fault.
mine is an x1i unlocked from the uk and i'm a kid in the u.s. on t-mobile lol. wish i did live there though. that'd sure be swell
really though, these ARE the first on the market so ppl shouldn't expect them to be without their flaws just as with any other high-end item be it phones or game systems. time must be allowed for all the creases to be ironed out.
Good luck figurine lol
And yes I do expect problems and I am not that mad with SE but O2 should be able to support their customers in a reasonable timeframe as we paid good money for them....
that wasn't aimed at you guru... it's these ppl that make a big deal about having to send their phone back within a few weeks of getting it due to hardware or software issues. It's to be expected. they should wait a few months until the bugs are worked out or something

That's your LED screen. Google "screen replacement for (your model)" Should pull up a bunch of sites. Install yourself if able, cause some of these companies are ridiculous on prices. Did my wing for $28.00, I think. Been awhile. Good luck

wouldn't that mean i couldn't see a picture? my screen works fine its just cracked. I was told it is most likely the digitizer (but my touch gestures still work as well).

I assumed it was the screen itself. Is the screen plastic or glass. I would think plastic, but who knows. Google it. Most screens include the digitizer when the screen is purchased. Personally I would replace both at the same time if cheap enough. You'll have the phone apart anyway, If you plan on doing it yourself.
I found it fun & a bit educational. might have to order a tool or 2 but there very cheap. Be careful of the ribbon connectors, you can break them very easily.
Wow sorry to see the HTC Dream/G1 suffer the way it did.
I think its time to hang up the phone for good.
Save the money you would pay to fix it and move onto something newer.

Is that really a fair comparison ? It's a non-rooted G1 running 1.6. I'd like to see the results on a rooted/flashed w/Froyo 2.2 Also not overclocked like some of them.
Screens are cheap, relatively easy to install fix for a $400 phone. Seems a waste to "hang it up".
Interesting info @ site though.

The HTC Dream/G1 is dead last in benchmarks.
Unless he can find a screen for dirt cheap I believe it would be a waste of cash.
If he is eligible for a full upgrade discount from his provider let him decide for himself.

Agreed, it is his decision.
Root/Flash and overclock the G1 and your saying it will still be dead last ?
So another words, you break your $400 phone and "you" would just buy a new one ?
So here's the deal, I have been having random shutoffs for a while now and they are getting worse no matter what rom I am on. I plan to return the phone for a replacement, but there are two problems. One is that the phone fell out of my hands onto concrete and made a TINY crack on the buttons part of the glass. And the other, is that I am a flashaholic and want to be able to flash it as easy as my 1007 model. So my question is, will At&t provide me with a new phone despite the crack and if they do, what are the chances I will get a 1009 (or whatever the regular odin3 cutoff is) model or higher?
Bumpety Bump T_T
Id take it to the store to ask mail it in and they see the crack and you'll get auto charged. Take a picture of the crack and upload it. Dont worry about the Odin issue there is always a way. But that power off thing is so awful I wonder what causes it and why it gets progressively worst.
Call the warranty dept adn talk to them. Flash it back to stock if they are going to take it back. Make sure your IMEI number is the same inside the phone as it is on the back. Make sure your product code is good. As far as what series you will get, who knows? My fourth phone is in the mail and I've had a 1006, 1008, and a 1007. This last one they sent me was defective. If the crack looks like a scratch, call it a scratch. Give the reason some frosting and make it sound good, but don't lie and say its not there. Be nice, tell them you know that its a known issue from ATT and Samsung and you would like to have it replaced. Took me all of 20 min on the phone. Doesn't hurt to play a little dumb too. No big words that reference to flashing or bricking. Just it keeps shutting off and I don't know why! lol Good luck!
Ill upload a picture so you guys can see. I've been a customer for like 7 years so im thinking i can maybe play my aggrivation up a little and try to get upgraded to the infuse when it comes out on the 10th

I had a 1007 and had to exchange it because the 3.5mm jack stopped working. I checked and what I found out is that, it's a total crap shoot as to what you get, you can ask for a specific build, but if they don't have it, you don't get it. I ended up with a 1008, no 3 button recovery PITA

I bought this phone 2 days ago and the battery just died on me, the thing is that I charged it full and when it hits around 70% my whole phone shuts down and would not start up again. So I recharged it, and got it full and then it shuts down on me again around that same battery percentage. Can anyone tell me the problem or help me out here? I'm out of ideas. D =
Try going to your settings and checking your power options..
Settings / power / then look at your power saver it might be set to whatever level it keeps shutting down at . If this does not work let me know I have a couple other ideas but let's knock off the simple ones first

Its unconfirmed that's its a battery issue and seems very strange that a company can sell a product with no warranty.
Do a factory reset and if that doesn't fix it, physically go into the store and get refund/exchange.
It seems odd that the phone would do that it seems more like a software issue as you are getting a charge imo if it was a battery.hardware.issue it would not hold a charge at all. U can try and return it if you have a warrinty that permits you to return it it would be a easy fix. But if you have no warrinty I would say try flasshing a new Rom see what happens

agree, you'd butter return it and have a totally test
There are some batteries which comes faulted & it will never be good using anything. Buddy the phone is new just take the phone to the service centre they'll replace the battery. Plz do not take any chance on ur new & expensive device. Happened with me the same thing when I bought a HTC wildfire long back.

Haven't heard of this particular problem but my girlfriend bought two HTC incredible S's last summer ( one for her one for her friend / roommate). Nothing went wrong with hers but her friends had a problem where it was getting real hot and the battery actually started melting so to speak. It caused the phone to form itsself into an arc shape where if laid down on a flat surface you could stack about two or three credit cards and slide it right underneath (I wont get into how clueless you have to be to not notice your phone get this hot). We sent it in for repairs ( with virgin) they determined it was a battery issue and will not cover it with warranty . Fixed the phone and it happened again within a week. Don't even get me started on bell/ virgin policies regarding warranty repairs...

Hi guys,
I sent my OB to get repaired under warranty because my wake/lock button wasn't working properly and i couldn't turn it on/off without doing some funny stuff with the usb cable.
Turns out the MCPB (main board) has the smallest of small cracks in it and my warranty claim has been unequivocally denied
The company sent me this image for referral in the case that i might complain and get their decision to not pay for repairs under warranty overturned. From the looks of the damage, i highly doubt they will.
The damage occurs in the top left hand corner.

Occurs here on the mainboard i think (credits to askor for the photo):
So i am pleading for anybody with any experience in repairing phones to help a brother out.
The place is asking for $280.50 AUD to replace the whole board and i said i'd rather chop my family jewels off. So i suggested that we solder the part back to the board and he said that "there is a very good possibility that i might damage or cook my board". and i rather not let that happen.
So please, does anybody have any ideas? any input would be appreciated.

At that price you can buy a new phone. I'll look at the pictures on my comp in a moment my phone doesn't show it. I haven't got experience in phone repair but I'll try.
EDIT: I had a look at the photo. It looks like it's burned and not cracked, You can't actually see the damage properly it would have been better if they gave a image from the other side. I'm no expert but that my opinion.
I'll be picking up the phone Saturday and since it's no longer under warranty i shall take it apart and have a look for myself and post some updates so i can better assess the damage.
@xonar_ thanks for your help, it is greatly appreciated. What are your thoughts on the warning from my authorized repairer? They said that they can't re-solder it for me due to contracts with manufacturers, but if i do it myself (or send it to another repairer) would it be possible to cook the board? I mean they would have had to solder the parts in the first place.

It's a strange contract they have. I think it is to avoid the manufacturer being blamed for bad workmanship and just allow quality controlled replacements.
Soldiering a circuit board isn't usually a good idea for various reasons. Try another repair shop. Doing it yourself is a possibility but if something goes wrong you are going to be one very unhappy person.

I would think that you are right, he said they used to be able to do patch up jobs about 10yrs ago but thats changed know.
The phone is pretty much useless as is because the only way i can wake it up is by plugging it in using the mini-usb port. So any fix that doesn't cost $280.50 is a fix that is worth considering in my book. The only thing is that i have already forked out $38.50 for just having a look at it and i don't really want to spend that money again by sending it to another repairer.
The part that needs to be fixed is only a 'female' connector so its nothing really important i suppose. Would frying that part be that bad?
I get my phone back Saturday the 27th so i'll post some pics and decide what i am going to do.
