[Q] Fasty 2.4 to serendipity? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im currently on fasty rom 2.4 and i want to flash back to serendipity...is it really necessary for me to flash back to stock and reroot and flash cwm again...or can i simply flash it over fasty? pleaase help

If your not flashing bootloaders you should be fine. Be sure to clear your caches and stuff as flashing from 1 ROM to another can build up some FC's here and there.

Thanks...

Also, you can install cwm directly through recovery without rooting on stock. Once you flash serendipity it will be rooted as its included in the rom. Most people just do this as a precaution but yes you should be fine as theres no need to flash bootloaders unless you're going to serendipity 7. But the instructions for flashing that rom should work from fasty as well.

There is some issue of galaxy s i9000 not having a stock 2e recovery. so we ll have to install a 2e recovery from some where. How to do that..
Also, do we need to undo the one click lag fix before flashing a custom rom?
I ve rooted the phone by z4one click root, do i really need to do rooting again with the cf root (for 2e recovery as some say
will the backup done by rom manager able to save the game and browser data?
Depends. If you are using a lagfix (conversion to jfs for instance) and you are going for a ROM based on a Kernel that doesn't recognize this kind of File System, then you are probably gonna have some isuues.
By the way, no, you won't have to do any rooting again, since CF Root kernel is already rooted

Thanks. Hey i have rooted using the RyanZ Z4root. how to find out whether i will require to install the 2e recovery while using Rom manager for putting on the darky' Rom extreme.
OK, so you are on a root-ed device, without any lagfix on, right?
If that's true, then you have many ways of installing Darky's Rom even if you don't have recovery 2e.
You could use Darky's ROM Configurator (found on market),make your selections and then download this and install it, just like you would with ROM Manager.
My Recommendation:
You could also download an ODIN version of Darky's ROM - BASE ROM, so that you won't have to mess with recovery 3e, and then apply Darky's "FULL" ROM, through recovery 2e.
Once Darky's ROM is installed, recovery 3e will be replaced by 2e
By the way, if not sure about whether you have a lagfix activated or not, I suggest that you choose to install Speedmod's kernel, through Darky's ROM configurator.

if i have GB bootloaders can i flash any GB ROM??

Lets say im already on serendipity 7, naturally i have the GB bootloaders. Can I flash any GB ROM over serendipity, or do some GB firmwares not play well with others when flashing one over another?
Or is it pretty straight forward, if I'm already on Gingerbread, im good to go as far as flashing any other gingerbread ROM over the one im on?
yes it should be pretty straight forward...unless you are switching to continuum(which has talon kernel and cwm 3) you need to odin talon first and then flash continuum from the orange cwm. if you were going to any other gb rom, say mosaic for example, just wiping data/factory reset, wiping cache, and wiping dalvik cache then flashing the rom will be fine.
oh if youve done any converting to EXT4 (chainfire app, or voodoo lagfix) convert back to rfs first.
In the threads for each rom it should say which bootloaders its running and from which model, if it matches what you have it'll work. Just be careful with CM7 and MIUI because they use custom ones.

What did I do wrong?

I downloaded that AIO Captivate Toolbox. I got to 2.1 stock, I rooted the phone. I installed clockwork mod. Then i downloaded MIUI 1.8.19. I booted into clockwork, did a backup, then cleared data, then flashed the MIUI zip.
My phone got stuck on the Att World Phone logo. Thankfully I'm back to stock again, but I'm curious as to what I did wrong to get to where I was.
thanks
I cant see what you did wrong maybe corrupt rom download? You did wipe system, data, and cache yes?
Also what I do step by step below.
Odin Oneclick jf6 (with bootloaders)
Flash cwm without rooting by placing update.zip on internal memory
Wipe data/factory reset
Format system
Flash miui (then language pack if miuiandroid.com version)
Reboot
Enjoy!
Edit: if you plan on using gb bootloaders they have only worked for me in the past if I flash them on stock jf6 before flashing miui. Might just be my cappy though.

It seems like you followed the instructions. Only advice i can give you is try again, maybe wipe davild cache. I'm not a fan on AOSP for captivate since they dont always work well, and can give complications to fix. But that's just my experience Ive had much better experience with AOSP's and other brands like HTC.
edit---what xijar said about a bad download could be the issue.

[Q] illuminace install issue

I tried to install the illuminance Rom last night, and it kept getting stuck at the ATT logo. I reflashed back to stock did a master clear, flashed a stock 2.3.5 uckj3 gingerbread Rom with corn kernel v307 also ATT gingerbread boot loaders. I used CWM to install the ROM, it'll restart then get stuck and get stuck at the ATT logo....is there something I'm missing? I've installed other ROM and have had no issues until now?!?!
If you used Corn kernel, are you sure you where on RFS format and not ex4?
it was rfs format before I tried to install
Did you make the file (don't remember exactly wich) that disable Voodoo. There is no reason for it to bootloop. After you flashed stock did you let it boot up? Maybe try with Boog kernel to flash then flash wich ever kernel you want to use?
I'll try the boog kernel.....I also ensured that the lagfix for system and data was disabled through CWM recovery ....in the install instructions it stated that it would take awhile to boot, I let it set for two hours. One thing I noticed is that 150 jpegs were installed

Doubt this might be it but, If you set it on CWM to disable lag fix reboot in cwm then flash. Random thought.
LOL....did that also.

My boot getting stuck got fixed after Wipe data/factory reset in CWm, wipe cache, wipe Dalvik cache, - all three -then install illuminance. Tried that ? Starting from stock KJ3 no bootloaders.
Importantly: Can you boot with just Illuminance boog kernel (the one that comes wiht the ROM, no other kernel flashed)? I presume you cannot boot a fresh Illuminance install............if this is the case wiping as above should help.
I finally got illuminance to install, and is working great.
this may seem like over kill but everytime I flash a new ROM I start from scratch and flash to stock and master clear and then build from therethis is the first time that I ever had any issues by doing it this way. usually I have it setup up in 10 to 15 minutes it seems to save any issues later down the road as far as being buggy.
Glad to hear it
Hi, I tried to install Illuminance 1.1, but I think the file is corrupted. I downloaded it twice, from different locations, and its the same zip file.
I tried to decompress it before installing it, just to check file consistency, but lots of files canĀ“t be decompressed.
Anyone had this problem? If not, any way /any where to safely download it?
Thanks!
In the Illuminance Rom Thread, in the OP, there is a link to IlluminatedOne's website, where u can find a good non-corrupted download and u will also find the installation instructions.
Not sure why u think u had a corrupted download ?? But u should b good to go once u get to the website.
As of this version 1.1 release, u should only be downloading the Illuminance Rom from said website.

I downloaded my version from Mega-upload. I tried it again last night just for...you know....and received the same results of being stuck on the att logo for hours. as usual i flashed to stock and master cleared, GB boot loaders, reinstalled stock 2.3.5 and reinstalled luminance and before i rebooted i installed the samurai kernel, then rebooted and everything worked as normal....so being fairly new to the whole Dev scene i don't know why that would make a difference, but it works fine and it didn't get stuck on the att logo.
oh and thanks twin I'll try and go to the website and check it out

[q] installing cwm recovery and cm9 on sgt p1000 india

Hi Everyone,
I have the Samsung galaxy p1000 tablet which is rooted and running stock firmware version 2.3.3 ....i have rooted it using doomslord toolkit....
.....I want to install cm9 on my tab....but i want to make sure everything is good before i start doing anything.......
i tried downloading overcome but download stopped everytime.......
i have downloaded overcome kernel 4.0.0.tar though.....
i want clockwork mod recovery on my tab.....how can i do that?
i am on stock firmware so do i need to restock it through overcome......or flashing the overcome kernel would do it all....
should i flash the overcome kernel only......is it feasible to use that kernel for stock firmware.....will the kernel convert tab into ext4 thereby making it possible to flash cm9
please help me over this......
Thanks..
I did that before, flash the kernel, wait for the conversion to ext4, reboot and flash cyanogen mod. For me it worked for installing AOKP mtd.

Thanks salahmed......but one more question...was ur stock firmware rooted when u flashed the kernel cause that's what is bothering me...and how do i return to my original device clean firmware once i am using cm9....
Thanks once again...
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA
You can always restock using overcome stock safe.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA
I have some free time today and so i will flash the rom today.....
Are these the steps i should follow???
1. Flash the overcome kernel only without restocking....
2. let it convert the system into ext4....and let it reboot after it...
3. Then shut down the tab and press volume down and power buttons at the same time till the clockworkmod recovery shoots up....
4. Then navigate to ' install from zip' and select AOKP BUILD 37(decided to flash AOKP) zip file....let it flash and then flash kernel(which kernel should i flash????? or does the AOKP zip contain it and hence it should be automatically flashed)
5. Then flash gapps.....
6. when it's done ....reboot
questions....
when should i wipe dalvik cache and data( before flashing AOKP zip or after that)
?????
also i read somewhere that i can revert back to original samsung firmware by flashing original samsung firmware via odin with "repartion checked".....
After flashing overcome kernel go to recovery wipe cash, dalvic cash, factory reset format data, then flash AOKP, the kernel is included 'z image' , then reboot system let it to complete booting, then reboot recovery again and flash gapps.
And that's right you can revert back with re partition but I did not try it.
