Remove kies from phone - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I just upgraded my sisters custom 2.2 ROM to a custom 2.3.4 with the 2.3 samsung apps. For some reason, samsung have now replaced Androids USB Mounting tool with some kies MTP only mounting app thing.
We only use Gnu/Linux on our machines, the MTP protocol is not my most faverit thing, and applications like kies is not either.
Is there anyway to get the regular mounting tool back? Otherwise does anyone know what this app is called in the system app folder so that I can at least remove it, and install MultiMount from the marked instead, without having this kies app pup op every time a plug-in a usb cable?

Go to Settings > Wireless and networks > USB settings > And select 'Ask on Connection'
That will stop the kies MTP thingy when you attach the USB Cable

Tanks, that helped

Thanks!
Thank you! That advice helped me too. I thought I'd looked at every option there was in Wireless & Networks, but I missed the obvious one!
Kies was annoying me, thanks for the advice

so is there any application available which can help me out
thanks in advance
You can, go to setting under about phone, select mass storage. The only let down is you need samsung driver, which u can download it on softpedia

Enable usb debugging and plug usb into BACK PANEL of motherboard to recogonise.......or go to settings and use which way to connect when usb is plugged in, should give a mass storabe option

To use as mass storage - I use mine with Linux, for example:
Settings -> About phone -> USB Settings
CHOOSE "MASS STORAGE" HERE
Then, go to Settings -> Applications -> Development
ENABLE "USB DEBUGGING" HERE
Then to use the internal storage, plug into your computer. On the Galaxy, you should see a notification "USB Connected". Use the pull-down notification bar at the top to see this.
Click on "USB Connected" in the notifications list. You should be given the option, "Mount".
Click on the "Mount" button and your computer will find the Galaxy's internal flash memory. Now you can drag/drop files without using the ****ty Samsung drivers.
Confirmed working on Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows XP.

Kies, connection impossible? Tried guides..

Ok, decided for the first time to try out Kies in an attempt to see if Froyo was available for me.
Well ffs, after 1hr I am for throwing the phone out of the nearest available window.
I am not a complete fool btw, as I previously owned windows phones and was a weekly flasher on XDA (in a rom sense and not a naked sense).
I have tried both methods described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758212
and here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758429
Neither work for me.
Kies just keeps trying to connect, but with no joy.
I am running the latest version of Kies, and am lost as to how to proceed.
Are there any other working methods to get this piece of s**t working?
All advice is welcome.
Are you running any sort of launcher like awd or Pro? If so you must disable it before you connect.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
running launcher pro, however disabled it and was running TW whilst trying to connect to Kies (as per instructions).
set it to use TW (as you have done) then in Settings> About Phone> USB settings...select Kies
reboot the phone, wait for it to complete boot up. Have Kies started on the pc then plug the usb in
That should do it
Thanks for the replies, I tried this to the step and in Kies it just says:
Connecting the Device, please wait, and the bar keeps cycling back and forward.
Tbh, this is all I have ever got. *sigh*
Are you sure there is no application running in background blocking internal nor external sd card? Check all tasks, nothing should use sd cards, while trying to connect to Kies.

Hi Guys,
I had the same issue and I connected the usb cable to another usb port.
That pretty much solved it.
beside that I did disable LP+
Hope that helps

This is what works for me (on Windows 7 32-bit):
1. Select Kies USB mode on the phone, disable USB debugging
2. Exit all apps and stay on the TWLauncher Home Screen
3. Connect phone to the PC
4. Open Control Panel > Hardware > Device Manager and check if the 'GT-I9000' appears in the list under 'Portable Devices' without an error icon (that exclamation mark thingy)
5. If 'GT-I9000' does not appear AT ALL, try another USB port. Also see step 7.
6. If 'GT-I9000' appears but with an exclamation mark in Device Manager, right-click > uninstall > refresh. You might need to do this more than once.
7. If instead of 'GT-I9000', you see 'MTP Device', do an 'Update Driver' process and in the wizard manually select location as '\Windows\Inf'
8. Once GT-I9000 does appear correctly in Device Manager, start Kies - it should work.
PS: I don't have a Windows machine around right now, so apologies in advance if I got some of the nomenclature wrong in the above steps.
Why are u using kies. If u want to upgrade just use Odin like everyone else. Kies is a piece of **** that gives ppl brain tumors and murders puppies like itunes

It sounds like you have the long file name extension problem. Basically, there are files on your sd card with extensions longer then three characters and this is what prevents Kies from initialising.
Mount your sd cards as mass storage and do a search for *.* This should expose the offending files. Delete them and recollect to the PC with Kies.
Tried all of the above with no luck :-(
Phone shows up as GT-I9000 fine with no errors, removed external sd card, and unmounted internal sd card, etc, etc.
How do I use Odin? Does it invalidate my warranty? Sick of this Kies sh1t.
Here's what I did:
1. Uninstall kies
2. Clean up registry using ccleaner or similar registry cleaner (kies doesn't clean up after itself ) and remove all kies registry junk
3. Reinstall kies
4. Reconnect your g
Hopefully it should work for you because it did for me.
Goodluck

Also tried removing Kies, cleaning and reinstalling and allowing it to update. Still doesn't connect to my phone! What a piece of crap software! Is Froyo out yet on o2 uk or do I still have some time to figure this crap out?
Is it a win 7 64 issue? I could dual partician with xp?

[Q] Captivate USB problems

Hi everyone,
I have an AT&T Captivate SGH-i897 (2nd hand) and i can't mount the phone to my laptop (winXP 32bit). When i plug in the cable to the phone and then the PC i get the "device not recognized".I've donwloaded the Samsung drivers from the xda wiki page and extracted them and tried to update the driveres via Device Mng ,but didn't work. Also dl'ed the Samsung drivers 5.0.x instaled ,and still nothing.USB Debugging is on...
So to recap,my top can't recognize the phone('s internal sd card) so plz help ???????
Try this, go into usb settings and choose "mass storage"
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
install kies
I would also recommend trying to fully uninstall all the drivers that associated on your pc with your phone (samsung or otherwise), and then reinstall the drivers before you plug in your phone. Then try to reconnect.
Just covering the basics. Assuming your phone is working correctly.
You have tried multiple USB ports on your computer, particularly those on the back if it's a desktop.
You have installed correct drivers (x86 or x64)
" for the correct operating system.
You have uninstalled the drivers before trying to reinstall.
You've tried to get Windows/ Mac to find them online (assuming you're using versions of OS that support doing that)
You've first tried Kies mini before full version, uninstalling in between. (Kies full version isn't supported for US, there are workarounds, but that's a different discussion)
On the phone you tell the phone to connect 'USB storage' (from the pull down menu after connected or in the settings)
I too am having problems with USB connectivity on a notebook with Win7/64. The usual failure mode is Windows not recognizing the USB device. I have followed ZBigT's basics, step by step and still cannot connect.
FWIW, my registry is awash with Samsung entries, some of which cannot be deleted.
I've even tried the AIO Toolbox application (to install the 64 bit drivers) to no avail.
Any other tips?
Is usb debugging turned off?
o hey guys sry for keeping u waiting,
i menaged to install ginger ,
the problem was my lap....rusty old bucket!!!!
had my friend come over with his lap and it worked like a charm ,
the problem is now i need a new one ;(,

Yes. Still no love. Have tried:
usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64
SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2
mini-KIES
Kies
AIO
uninstalling reinstalling each time
When I plug in the Captivate, any of 3 USB ports on the laptop, Windows gives the "Unrecognized Device..." message.
Go to settings/about phone. Look at the very bottom to see what rom you are running.

Paragon RC6.0
FWIW, I also have a Win7/64 desktop with the usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64 installed and that works fine; can connect see "drives", use ODIN, adb commands etc.
It just the notebook, which I would like to be able to use to connect, especially when I travel, which has issues.

Check in program files for a Samsung folder. There may be remnants from old drivers that need to be manually deleted.

Thanks for sticking with this. I was able to connect. I as focused on the Registry remnants, but your advice to clear out the Samsung folder in Programs worked. Thank you.
Additional comments: I am now running the Dlev ROM, it's OK, but when I plugged in the USB cable, just to the phone, it launched the Alarm Clock app! So I deleted that.
Then on the first of my four USB ports I got a USB driver failure to install, then the Windows Unrecognized USB device on ports 2 & 3. On port 4 it worked. (This is a Lennovo/Thinkpad notebook.)
I used the usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64 package as that also worked on my desktop.
Thank you very much.

[Q] Auto mount SD via USB

I just upgraded to JB 4.1.2 and notice that the phone will no longer automatically mount the sdcards in Windows 7 Explorer. I got used to simply connecting a USB cable and "GT-N7000" would appear in the list of drives in Explorer. Could this be someting to do with the ROM itself? The stock one for my phone is not available yet to compare.
Does anyone know of an app that will do this that works on this ROM? I've tried several but none of them seem to do what they claim.
I know I can use an apps such as MyPhoneExplorer (phone client) and PC app but this involves as many buttone and key presses as doing it natively on the phone.
Galaxy Note GT-N7000
Android version 4.1.2
Baseband N7000XXLS3 Ultimate JellyBean 4.1.2 v4
Kernel version 3.0.31-422420
Thanks in ad vance
Trevor
I believe this is a bug with the leaked JB, ive seen several similar issues regarding charging / mounting / storage, Basically everything that requires USB.
I too suffer from this occasionally but im a ubuntu user.
Have you tried multi-mount - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rafoid.multimountsdcard.widget&hl=en
Thats the paid version ^^ there is a lite (free) version which does the job, It also has option for auto mount when usb is connected.
Thank you. Yes, I tried MultiMount but couldn't get it to work. Spent a fruitless hour fiddling around with it. Would have been happy to buy the paid app if it had.
Basically, all I'm looking for is to automate the "USB Connected/Turn on USB storage" function of JB when I plug in a USB cable. It works fine right now but too many things to swipe and click on to get there.
Do you use MTP or Mass Storage ? If you go to settings > more > usb utilities, It should have option to change.
If you use MTP it will will automatically mount when connected, With mass storage you must manually mount it.
Alternatively just quick search google for android auto mount
There's a ton of apps / tricks to do this, Not sure if they work on JB yet but worth a try, Ive never used anything like that so i cannot confirm which ones work and which dont.

[Q] not getting detected by any PC via USB

My S Advance I-9070 recently got formatted. I was able to recover my installed Apps, photos, music via gmail account. However Contacts which were on the phone, couldn't get restored. Since i have a contacts.spb recent copy, on my PC, tried to connect S Advance to this PC and it is not getting detected as additional device. The Samsung Kies software also doesn't recoganize the phone. Except that the phone battery gets charged when connected. I tried different cables and PCs, and took to a service center, this phone didn't get recognised. I have backed up all data to SD card on the phone. Is this a new issue with S Advance ?
Please help.

Try to turn USB debbuging on, and see if something shows up in Windows explorer.
If you are on JB: Settings> Developer Options> USB Debugging

Try this one
This is when your Samsung not popup usb notifier at phone upper menu bar.
Resolution
1. Unplug the USB cable
2. On the cell phone, dial the following number: *#7284#
Once the last # is hit, the PhoneUtil application is launched. Choose USB -> Modem and then USB -> PDA mode.
The good mode should be PDA. Even if the mode is PDA, switch to Modem and then back to PDA.
3. Plug the USB cable.
Try settings-more settings under wireless and network. There are 2 to try. Usb utilities if that does not work. Try turning kies on or off on the phone. No idea why but kies on the phone does it on both computers I use with my 9070. Drivers can be a real pain for this too. When i upgraded to LQG I had to update the drivers too, but that could be my computer too.
