So I put a 2.4gb .mp4 over to my sd card which is in my D3 and I can't seem to get the vid to play as it should. Tried the stock video player as well as Mobo.
The video plays with Mobo only if I use the soft-decoding option, but the audio gets ruined in the process. With the stock video player, I get a black screen and the track bar shows the video skipping at very fast rates. If I close and reopen the video again, the player crashes. If I scroll through the track bar, I can see the video screen caps but once the video starts playing again, black screen.
Video is a 720p bluray rip of The Dark Knight. Not sure what the exact specs are on that.
Btw my laptop plays the vid flawlessly so the file isn't corrupt or anything.
Do I need to convert the file or something, because I thought the D3 could play .mp4 files.
Try RockPlayer Lite from the market. I've had good luck with that app playing videos encoded for ipad/touch. The description is in Chinese but the menus are English so its usable.

Yeah try a different player like vlc on the market, the video encoding might be out of spec with audio and video slightly and enough to confuse the stock video player.

Tried it, worked the way Mobo did (audio ruined) but also distorted graphics in some areas.
I've heard that SD cards (or maybe the Droid 3/android phones) don't like vid files over 2 gigs, and this is 2.7 so...? or maybe I should use a different format instead of mp4 :/
bleh i dunno.. so many possibilities
Are you putting it on a physical sd card or on the phones internal memory which is labled sd? If its on the card that's prob your problem, but it on the internal storage. If not, idk

Yeah it was on the SD Card which I heard isn't nice to files above 2GB.
Anyway I downloaded DVD Catalyst 4 and the newly converted file worked on the card fine. Still, good to know about the sd card vs internal storage for future large video files.

Is there really no player avialable for N1 that can supports divx/xvid up to 1500kbit/s yet?
Im also waiting for this one. Have a 16gb sd card with a lit of space to put some divx movies in it. Always nice to watch movies in the train.

Google rock(divx)player. It is fairly new and handled my 900kbit/s avi fine, but my 720p 3000kbit/s movie ran at only 15fps (as expected).
Yeah, thats a start. But it seems that the rock-player is still a little slow, I was hoping there are allready solution that playes everything (sd) pain-free like tcmp or coreplayer on windows mobile. I know the coreteam is working on a port but there is no timetable yet.
Isn't it possible to just port the divx-player (or the entire rom) from the htc desire?
hello I just bought captivate three days ago and yet haven't figure out lots of it yet.
I love this device, but only problem that I got now is that it plays regular .mkv video files without converting it but I can't skip or fastforward it. I tried to dl some other video programs, but that wasn't helpful.
and you know you can't just finish the 3 hours of movie at once.
If someone knows how to fix this plz tell me
thx
let me throw an mkv on my phone and test it!
I played it through the stock player, and all I did was tap the screen and I was able to move the seekbar. My guess is that you have a broken MKV file.
I tried 3 different movies.
Pirates.of.the.Caribbean.3.2007.Bluray.x264.720p.AC3-WAF 4.5gb
King.Kong.2005.720p.HDDVD.x264-BKL 8gb
You might want to try RockPlayer but you have to side load it to use the ARMV7 version.

It could be the format of the movie. I've got some ctrlHD movies that are working.
yea i tried rock player, but it didn't work
ty though

If you play your MKVs on your computer using vlc, can you seek? And most likely this is going to be moved to the general or app thread once a mod sees it.
but isn't it kind a weird? I can skip and fastfoward w.e i want to do with on my comp, but not on galaxy when it plays flawless

VLC will only temporarly repair broken movies. I think it prompts you when it does.
I have my Blu-Ray backup of avatar on my device and it seek works.
I had to split my movies into 4gb chunks bc of FAT limitations. Are you running a different file system? How did you get an 8gb file on your phone?

Oh I didn't know I have to split, and yea it didn't work when I tried to put them on with samsung kies. so I just put them with regular method just by putting directly into the folder. I will try to split the movie and try again maybe that was why it won't work properly. what kind of program do you use to split the blu ray movie though? mine takes forever to do that
alright I just split my videos with mkvmerge with less than 3 gb which works fine on my computer and run with vlc before I put on my phone. Somehow, movie doesn't even play at all.

I didn't even think about it being too large. What filesystem are you running? FAT32 can not handle a file larger than 4gb. If you are streaming from your PC it would cause seek issues.
1) wrong place
2) Format/container/encoding/size
just because it's an MKV does not mean with will work the same as there may be any number of differences in the stack of details that make up the file.
(! Personally, and forum wise, I say rip your own legally owned copies !)
Let me ask a dumb question, do you have the screen locked? Pressing the power button when playing video locks the screen.
I may be under-thinking it but I fear people are over-thinking it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
HAHAH No that's not the case here.
I just won't be able to seek the movie if I put mkv files in it
Alright, so I'm running Nookie Froyo (customized?) and Sometimes my SD card has problems mounting but I just pop it in and out and it goes.
However, Gallery and Music are not picking up any of the music I have stored on there.
Similarly, when I use Astro to play most of the videos I have, it FC's. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

Off the top of my head I'd say for the video issue verify the format is compatible (h.264 baseline with a resolution at or below 854x480 for example) and short of that use ROM manager to fix permissions, reboot into recovery and wipe cache and then check again.
On the custom emmc 0.6.8 build I'm finding that the best thing for me is to re-encode my videos using handbrake with the custom preset found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894165
I've tried various video players and have settled for just using the stock player and uninstalling all others. I sometimes get video rotating into portrait mode which I resolve by jumping into Youtube app and running a video while rotating into landscape mode and then jumping back into gallery. Seems to often kick the movie player back into playing in landscape as it's supposed to.
As for music, I haven't tried loading my SD card with MP3's so I can't comment on that.
Hope this helps.
Hey thanks, helped me out too haha.
Does HandBrake have a batch convert/process option?
If it doesn't, I need a program that does.
I used freemake to do the conversion for my nook, and it worked great. But, you do have to be careful what video size, audio and video codecs, bitrate, and file extension that you pick.

It has. Press "Soucre->Add folder", all video files will appear in title list. Simply switch titles and add them to queue.
Honestly, call me dumb. But I clicked "Source> Add folder" Then Start and it only converted 1 file.
EDIT: Sorry ,I figured it out.
what I've tried...
-rockplayer 1.6.3
-qqplayer
-vplayer (unlocked)
-vital player
What I watch..
-mostly divx avis haven't bothered trying nor do i care about mkvs at this point
ideally, where I would play video from nfs/cifs mounted storage
-cifs is working via cifs manager
what I've noticed
-rockplayer doesn't want to play anything
-qqplayer plays things but its choppy
-vplayer doesnt want to play anything either
- vital player cant play anything outside of /sdcard and doesnt play anything.
by doesnt work i mean i see the file in the player, i select it, either nothing happens or it appears to load and just closes the app. (yes software decode mode)
as a side note I've also noticed adb push file.avi /sdcard is much slower than my old 32gb class2 microsd card in my evo, and slower than the internal 16gb storage in my nexus s. (1266 KB/s (732659712 bytes in 565.100s))
anyone else having as much trouble as I?
My avi's play fine with rockplayer universal

You know whats strange? This device can handle the mkv format just fine.. whereas my gtab cannot.. yet plays avi's without any issues what so ever.
My m4vs, at first, will blank with weird rainbow lines for first few seconds but play terrific on RockPlayer afterward. Every time I select a m4v file.
Didn't try other formats such as avi, mkv, wmv, ogg, etc.
Tried VPlayer Unlocker, QQPlayer, all no good.
I'm looking forward to either VLC or CorePlayer which I think will hit first, on twitter, it's said to be expected to go out by middle of this month. Let's hope.
i dont know why, but every time i try to load an MKV file onto my xoom, windows explorer crashes. anyone else have this problem?

But do you get audio?
Here's what I've found:
I suppose it depends on the audio that's muxed in. AAC should work in place of AC3 - downmixed to stereo. Though I actually haven't tried multichannel aac, I doubt it would work out correctly. Question is, do dts and ac3 pass thru work (thru HDMI)

I stated this in another post for video, so here goes again.
PLEX
I am working with the Android devs for Plex right now as a beta tester. At this very moment he is working on the video subsystem. Once the kinks are ironed out the next update will be pushed to the market.
I dont know about you, but I dont like having to encode my movies into another format just so I can watch them on my phone/tablet. Also having a collection closing in on 1000 movies makes that even more of a pain. I like the idea of having a server at home push my movies, NO MATTER the format to my phone/tablet.
Plex on my Nexus S looks near perfect, and there is early work being done to improve the video quality.
If I had to take a guess I would say the public is about two weeks or less away from an update that enables playback on the Xoom. Even better the interface will be tweaked to take advantage of the screen size and Tegra chip after that.
I will post in the forum the moment the official release goes live for our new toy.
Does anyone have any idea how I can play my videos on the SGS.
They are taken on my camera and have transferred to my internal SD card as MTS files and will not play. Any help appreciated.
I have sorted this now, people are not very helpful on this forum.
You could try Moboplayer? SD card will not support files over 4 gig and neither does allshare. You could also use iMediashare if you want to stream files over 4 gig. You only other option would be to convert the files to a format supported by the phone.
Yes I converted them to mp4 and that worked but Dice player will play them I have now discovered so next time I will use that, thanks.
