im pretty confuse of these two terms here, semi and hard bricks. for what i know semi brick is when you see the phone--->pc thingy on your phone after a flash failure. and can be resolve by a JIG or tricks to get into download mode.
but what about HARD BRICKS?? can they be resolve with a JIG or tricks? what are the symptoms of hard brick phones? is there anyone from the forum that could not enter download mode with the use of JIG or tricks?
pls answer the following. it will help me with my phone before flashing.
Hard brick is just like soft brick, but you cant go download or recovery menu, and you have to send it to shop where you bought it.

You cant use JIG if your phone is hard bricked.
And, well your phone bricks if you flash wrong file with odin (sometimes) or wrong .zip
IN XDA/SGS 1 bricked means phone wont boot may be described as soft brick as its probably recoverable . Only one culprit in a soft bricked phone the user has not bothered to read/follow instructions .
Recovery is usually via download mode /jig and flash a stock rom .
Hardbricked dead never ever recover nothing the user can do combination of above or blown hardware .

I guess the guy recently on the Q&A forum had who did a fatal mistake on flashing (see attachment).
Semi bricks seem to happen far more often but from what I read here it doesn't really matter much on the SGS. I'm way no expert but it sounds you gotta mess up big time to hard brick it or be extremely unlucky when flashing boot loaders or something (correct me if I'm wrong).
Hard bricked phones have to be sent in for repair afaik. There are also some guys trying to figure out a different kind of cable to get into some more advanced service mode or so for hard bricks (?).
Anyways, what to do when you semi brick? Usually go to download or recovery mode and flash again.
My very first flash was about enabling these modes (my SGS came without them) so I had neither mode and semi bricked (better use direct USB). Luckily, thanks to all the info on XDA I knew I'd be screwed if things go wrong so I bought myself a JIG dongle off Ebay prior and thus could plug it in, get into download mode and re-flash, all fixed.

HE IS MESSED up. i wonder what happened his phone?
Is it true that if the devs crack the bootloader.. And if we install a costum kernel..
And if something goes wrong then can we repair the phone with pcc and seue or is it bricked forever?
I think we will can use seus.
we won't be able to repair the phone with seus but we have x10flashtool!
There are two kinds of brick.
Soft Brick - The common/usual brick we talk about in the forums which can be repaired with SEUS or Flashtool
and...
Hard Brick - You can get this only if you mess with the bootloader. This kind of brick is NOT repairable. That means your phone is going to the trash can.

a) Check the manufacturing date (sticker below the battery) and then search this Q&A board to make sure your phone isn't too new - you'll find several threads with a warning about phones out of 11W29 and onwards being candidates for a hard brick due to hardware changes. You can NOT revive the phone yourself - you need to send it in for repair and they will most likely change the motherboard! You've been warned to think at least twice!
b) There are several people who unlocked the boot loader while having GingerDX installed through the manual method. Safest way, or course, is to flash back to Stock and unlock from there.

Unlockin bootloader with date above 11W29???
Hey guys I tried unlocking the bootloader on my x8 the manufacturing date was 11W39 so as you can guess I got THE Hardest Brick. Then i took the phone to my mobile operator, told them that it was switched off when i plugged it for charging and that when it said battery full it would not start. And it worked!!! They replaced my motherboard for free I guess the warranty was still valid apparently xD. So, I came home installed GingerDX right away but i really want to port ICS 3.0 on my x8 and i would really appreciate if someone had any ideas how to unlock the bootloader on a motherboard 12W and something above. I've read that a couple of guys managed to do it, so anyone pls help before i go and cash out 400 euros on the HTC One X.
Thanks.

Well, if with 11w39 you got hard brick, you will also hard brick your phone again because the motherboard is even newer. It's better to not try it. You have very very few chances to unlock bootloader with 12w and above!

Successfully UNLOCKED Xperia X8 11W35 just hour ago!
I was scared with all disccussions here but I wanted to try, however it could finish.
I had followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254225
I am not encourageing anyone to do so, but it is good to know that 11W29 is not the limit, maybe it is 11W35?
Or maybe it has something with guidance? For me, guides by SpiderX were succsessfull.
[Q] what can i do now? my X8 was hard bricked!
after i used the unlocker bootloader command, my phone got bricked
the situation my X8 facing is :
1. NO LED
2. NO Screen ON
3. NO Connection with computer
4. No vibrate after i press the power button
5. CANNOT charge
6. CANNOT use SEUS to recover my phone
7. S1 tool cannot detect my device
8. FLASHTOOL cannot detect my device
Even i replace the new battery, it's still not work.
so, what can i do to repair it by myself?
i don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to repair it

What's your qualification?
You're a hardware engineer / hardware (repair) technician / hardware hacker?
No?
Stop dreaming about home brew repairs (as there is NO option left unless you fulfill the requirement from above, in which case you wouldn't post here) and either send it off to SE or throw it into the trash.

Firstly, you obviously didn't find this thread which would've spared you the trouble.
Secondly, it is a kind-of hardware problem now that you "killed" the phone with a failed boot loader unlock due to the date code being past 11W29
Thirdly, I have no idea what a "experts repair" (to use your words) will cost. So far no one obviously found a phone repair shop where the technicians had the required brains and tools to unbrick the phone - everyone who hard bricked the phone sent it off to SE.

Whoa?! 11W20 hard bricked?
Anyway, since something seems to have went wrong your only option is to send the phone off to SE for repair.
There is, as I already said, NO way for any home-brew repair left - unless you would already own the required hardware to JTAG the phone (RIFF box + X8 JTAG header or Medusa Box + X8 JTAG header).
Get in touch with your local SE service center and ask them how sending the phone in works (and refrain from telling them about what you did - just tell them "I tried to turn it on in the morning and it won't turn on - dunno what's wrong" *1000W angel halo*)
My friend faces same problem with his phone. He hard bricked it. The phone was other one but the logic is the same.
If you phone is still in warranty. Then they wont charge you. As they cannot know whats inside the phone. Is it rooted, unlocked, custom ROM or anything.
Just go to the shop, with this dead phone, tell them you saw this in the morning and something must have happened during the night (like make something up. Ofcourse a good reason) and before you know they will be agreeing to repair your phone with NO COST!
sigh..
guess its a trip to service center..
had that problem too..

Hey Guys,
I have Samsung Galaxy Ace (GT-S5830), recently while uprading the my ace with the Cyanogenmod10, i had bricked my phone, now it never goes into the download mode so that i can flash the firmware with Odin. Actually yesterday, i used Rom Manager to Install the Custom Rom, and when said yes to install the custom rom, phone shutdown, and never started again, i googled around for some way out to go into the download mode, tried all the key combination, but could not go into the download mode, i tried the Home + VolumeUp and connected the USB to PC, with this method, my phone was detected, but because it was not in the download mode (i guess), so Odin just stucked at setup connection... and does not go further. Have anyone went through this dilemma, can anyone help me out of this, my warranty period is elapsed, so was thinking to get phone back to life myself.
Please anyone help me with this, i love the phone... I know that was my mistake to use Rom Manager to Install the Rom.

Don't know where, but its more expensive than a brand new ace (and lots of low-mid range smartphones)
I bricked mine 1 week after getting it. I took it in and said it shut off and I can't turn it back on. They made sure it wasn't the battery, then replaced it under warranty. So if you still have a warranty, it's worth a try. The guys at the store won't know you've been screwing around with it.
To use Rom Manager you need a CM-compatible rom installed. It says that right on Rom Manager's download page. DO NOT USE WITH STOCK ROMS EVER!!!
