Ok, So I rooted my HTC Hero, flashed clockwork, flashed cyanogen. The first time I was having a few troubles with force closes. Wiped and reflashed and now my SD card doesnt mount to the phone, recovery, pc, anything. Ive tried several sd cards. formatted, through the phone, windows, everything.
I get abolutely no messages, text and voice.
I cant do anything at all to try to fix the problem since the sd card wont show up at all.
Every once in awhile a message will pop up saying the sd card is damaged and to reformat. When I reformat it will just hang at "mounting card" then go back to the "damaged" message.
Is there any possible way to get my sd card working again? is my phone done for?
BTW, this may be a factor. I am running cyanogenmod with s-on. so my phone is running cyanogen mod but isnt rooted. weird.
Cant even get my hero to show up in windows.
Im stuck in a serious corner here.
try holding the volume down/power buttons witch from there youll go to hboot then press volume up to fastboot usb then make sure your phone is plugged into a computer and run a ruu that should undo any partitions you did and restore it back to stock.
just out of curiosity are you sure you installed the right version of cyanogen.

I downloaded it straight from the website. clicked on the hero, flashed 2 phones. one was successful, one was a total failure.
Booted to hboot, moved to fastboot, cant get it into fastboot usb though, its plugged in. not working at all

I think what he was getting at was are you sure you clicked CDMA hero and not GSM. If you can get it to go to fastboot but got nothing on your computer, did you make sure you had the drivers? There are 2 separate ones. Install both to make sure. You might also consider pulling the SD card and formatting it through your PC. It won't affect your BIOS but if the SD wont mount in the phone it could help. Also some of the SD cards have a lock and unlock tab on the side. Check for that 2

Turn the phone off. Plug it in to the computer. Does the led come on? If not it's probably hardware related. I'd check the USB cable first simply because it's the cheapest route.

Ok can you insert the SD card in to the PC directly?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Sd card works perfectly in my computer, my laptop, and in my evo.
Sometimes I can get the sd card to kind of show up on the hero. Sometimes it'll say the card is damaged, sometimes blank. A few times it said "Safe to remove" when i try to mount it, it says "checking for errors" then force closes.
I think im starting to lean towards a hardware problem. But I definitely cant take it in to get fixed if im stuck in root

Well you're not really stuck in root. You can flash without an SD card at all. There's a thread explaining the entire process which is what I was going to recommend if it is a hardware problem. If that doesn't work you are ****ed. Sorry but I don't know how to change an SD card reader on a hero.

I probably wouldnt take it as far as popping it open and trying to change the reader.
This was my personal phone but now its hardly in use since I cant receive messages. I just forwarded everything to my evo which was supposed to be my personal phone, but I am now using it for work until I either replace this hero or find a way to fix it.
I saw a thread that tells you how to flash without using the sd card, but it has to connect to the pc I believe. Mine can do neither.

I've seen the threads about rooting without unlocking, but I have a more specific question.
Could I root and flash to 2.2 without unlocking while reserving the option to flash back to completely stock including stock recovery and not touching boot loader back to 2.1 update 1.
I am asking specifically for epe54b on att. I've seen most threads were targeted for t mobile versions of n1.

why don't you first try to see if adb can see you device in recovery first? 'cos i cannot
seems like that is the showstopper for me
So I tried what you suggested and I was unable to get into recovery, here are the steps I performed:
Step 0:
- Install the SDK
- Make sure there is no "update.zip" in SD card
- Connect your phone with the USB
- Extract all files I provided to your <SDK>/tools
Step 1:
Enable Debugging in Setting->Development
Then, shut down your phone
Step 2:
Booting into bootloader by holding vol- and press Power
Use vol- button to highlight "Recovery"
Step 3:
Open CMD, and cd to the <SDK>/tools
Run "loop"
Step 4:
Press Power to enter Recovery now, you will see the triangle and <!>
Hold Power and vol+ to show the menu
Step 4a:
If your CMD shows you the devices is in recovery, press control + c to stop the "loop"
Step 4b:
If there is nothing, reboot your phone and repeat step 2-4 until it shows up.
(This is 99% caused by the sd card, faster card make it easier to show up)

1- Wrong section.
2- You do not give any info about what is going on.
Have you used Odin before? Did you have USB debugging enabled? Have you tried other USB ports on your computer, or other computers if available? What happens when you plug your phone in to a computer? Do you have the proper drivers installed on your computer?
Going "only" by your topic, if that's truly the case I can only recommend that you build/use a jig. Otherwise we need more info.
Thanks...

You have been around awhile it seems so give more info so people can help. You never answered any of my questions. It could be as simple as your drivers messed up. But since you aren't really saying what you have done, what the phone does when plugged to the computer you aren't going to get much help.
ok!
So I have been regularly flashing roms without issue. Loaded drivers onto two different pcs without issue and was able to odin every time. Was also able to see my internal and external storage cards from both machines (one is xp, other w7).
I have flashed quite a few roms recently including flashing directly over a rom (phoenix rising 1 to 2) using only CWM. I did this because I couldnt get, my pc to see my device. So I am not sure of exactly when it went wrong.
I reinstalled the dirvers on both pcs
But that didn't help. Phone just charges. I have tried to ' restore' to stock but phone just hangs on bootscreen, but I was able to reflash 2.2roms usings CWM.
interestingly I have had real difficulty getting into download mode. Also, if I use rom manager to install a rom it says I have an error getting into download mode. I can only get in via cwm. I generally cannot get in with the 3 key method. And I van never get in,from the enhanced shutdown menu. It just reboots.
Sometimes when I try to boot I get stuck for a bit on the battery charging graphic, except it sgows an empty battery (when it isnt).
Sometimes ro get it to boot I,have to plug in usb power even if battery charged.
Finally when device is off and I plug it in to charge, it boots up.

*** UPDATE ***
For no reason I can fathom, all of a sudden my PC sees my Captivate. the ONLY thing I did was using TITANIUM I did a re-backup of all my apps. It did something but I dont know what.
lol happen to reboot your computer in between then?
Btw.. there are a TON of posts (including the Q&A sticky) that shows you alternatives on how to get into DL mode on your phone.
The search button is your friend - all you have to do is look for "bricked"
Actually I didnt reboot...
and guess what, after an hour of seeing my captivate, I went into DL mode to run Odin FINALLY and all of a sudden it stopped recognizing the captivate. once again USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED!!!
my issue isnt getitng ito DL mode, its getitng the PC to recognize my device.
anyone???
Sorry man, I am at a loss as to why your computer just up and stops recognizing the connection. I would back up your internal sd to your computer when you are/if able to get it to connect again and get a new one because something has to be defective with the phone.
Edit: You never answered one posters question about a different cable. Do you have one to try? Is the cable you are using the OEM Samsung?
Every time I turn the phone on it loads right to the hboot screen I have tried the dreaimg.nbh three times to boot back to the stock os and still giving me the hboot screen everytime I reboot. It wasn't from custom roms either thats the weird thing. I started after the phones battery went dead any ideas? Thanks for any help.

What is the SPL/radio, ROM, etc...? And what did you do prior of it getting stuck at HBOOT?
I don't have the specs right in front of me but it should all be stock after the dreaimg.nbh correct? I can boot in stock recovery and load the update.zip with signed rom's but still just hboot.
Sent from my HTC Magic/Dream using XDA App
OK! I am assuming you have the dreaming.nbh on the root of your SD card (if not, put it there.
Then turn off your phone (if it's on). While turning on your phone hold down camera + power. it should let you flash dreaming.nbh file, follow the instruction and wait until it's done. DO NOT pull the battery out.
Once it's finish then you can do the root instruction.

root?
why is everyone talking about root?
from what I read no one is trying to root it.
Now that is out of the way.
boot process
tries to load kernel from boot partition
if that fails
tries to load kernel from recovery partition
if that fails
loads hboot (edit or is it just fastboot mode with 0.95.0000? I know with 1.33.x00x it goes to a black screen with fastboot in top corner and not full hboot)
OR if camera button is depressed load hboot
from what I read you have tried to reflash the dreaimg.nbh
I would assume that if it could not write to boot or recovery it would throw some error.
So can you confirm that the camera button is in good order?
and for fastboot you need to press back once you are in hboot, fastboot from the PC should then be able to see it
But, you are not going to be able to do a great deal with that SPL
After looking for quite a few hours on google and xda the only solution thats shows up is to use a jtag and quite frankly that scares the pants off me
here is what happened
-i upgraded the device to froyo then did the super one click root in order to root
-after that i installed the modified recovery to turn off the signature check
-after doing that i flashed clockwork mod renamed update.zip through recovery
-after that i flashed the ICS beta but i could not get the main zip to work through recovery the only other zip i had on my sd card was the kernel so i flashed that and it worked, in clockworkmod 5.0 it wiped everything on the phone so i reloaded the 2 zips i flashed the rom there and it rebooted. (this is out of order from the thread so i know this is what causes the next problem.
now when ICS boots up i get an encryption unsuccessful screen saying i need a factory reset, only option given is reboot now. can't bypass the screen, can't access via adb (driver install fails on windows too), cant get into download mode, and can't get into recovery.
how screwed am i
device is
Samsung captivate
-build number 1009
You need Gingerbread bootloaders.
And since you cant get into download mode... You probably need a USB Jig.
Good news is that you see something at startup. I doubt you are totally screwed then.
Second the jig as an option. It has quite the track record on this forum as making the captivate almost un-brickable.
What have you tried as far as getting your phone into download mode? There are sometimes multiple ways (Vol-up + Vol-down while plugging in USB without battery, sim, or microsd installed is how I always seem to get it working). Here is a list:
http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode
To my knowledge, none of that information is dated... but there are those here that know far more about it than I ever will.
none of those methods worked, it just stinks if it would have been any other rom i would have been fine i think but since i can't do anything in user space and everything i do takes me to the ICS android screen i cant do anything.
also for the record i am a noob to samsung devices but i have been doing this stuff to HTC devices for years

Did you try this method to get into download mode?
1. Turn off phone, remove sim, battery, sd
2. hold both volume buttons, keep holding for remainder of instructions
3. insert usb
4. insert battery
This has instantly granted download mode on every captivate i've ever tried.

The team hacksung project might be compatible, but the straight port says in the op that you need to flash kf1 first, which included bootloaders.
You aren't hard bricked and your device is recoverable.
If you are still on the froyo bootloaders, try unplugging the usb cable, removing the battery, sim and sd cards, hold vol up+vol down (don't hold power), and plug the usb cable back in. It should take you to download mode.
If your phone responds to adb while it's booting, you can just issue a quick 'adb reboot download' or 'adb reboot recovery' to get it to boot into either without the button combos.
If either of those don't work, you can try forcing it with a usb jig (just a 301k resistance over pins 4 and 5 of the microusb port). Build a jig, take the battery out, plug the jig in, make sure not to touch the jig while it's in or you'll change the resistance and won't work, put the battery back in and it should kick your phone into download mode. Once you're there, simply remove the jig and plug the usb cable back in.
Sometimes the download mode graphic won't show up even if you are actually in download mode. If the phone looks like it hung, try connecting it to Odin anyway and see if it recognizes it.
Edit: forgot to mention, try using adb from linux (virtual machine or livecd will work too). You shouldn't have to mess with drivers and it's worth a shot.

Are you able to go to CWM using the three button combo? Try pulling out the battery, reinsert, Hold vol-up + vol-down

Hey,
Could you tell us more about how it was resolved?
I'm having the same issue here.
I have searched everywhere and cannot find any answers. I tried to load a custom rom lastnight and my phone got stuck on the white HTC screeen. I was able to go into HBOOT but everytime i tried to rebot nothing would hapen. I loaded the PH39IMG.zip but it said the file could not be read. Now my phone wont turn on normally or into HBOOT. When I plug it in the orange light flashes and goes out. The only response I get is the haptic on the 4 lower keys.
Did you flash the boot image before you flashed the ROM?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
not sure. I made the mistake of using ROM Manager from the market. i downloaded the rom i wanted to the external sd and went into the app, selected "install from sd card", selected the rom and it instantly came up with the white HTC scren. i gave it about 30 min before pulling the battery and loading HBOOT. from there i couldnt do anything so i went to bed. when i woke up i was able to enter HBOOT and got the message "battery low". i plugged it in and the light flashed orange. now nothing. just feedback when i touch the 4 bottom keys. i put a CWM and the zip back on sd card but cant get into HBOOT to flash it...

thats what i thought also but i cant get it to do anything. i hant get into HBOOT or FASTBOOT. all i get is a black screen
Did you pull your battery before trying to boot into hboot?
Did you relock your phone before trying to flash the PH39IMG?
yes. it just doesnt want to enter. i just left the battery out for 20 min and it finally went to hboot. it asked if i would like to go into recovery, i said yes. it said updating then update sucessful and asked to reboot. did that, white htc screen for 5 min then it turned off like it died again. How would i "re-lock" if i can manage to get back to hboot? and is there a reason my battery wont charge? also can i enter it without the battery and being connected to charger? Thanks for all the help guys
yay. i got into CWM!!! now can i install a custom ROM?

Heres exactly what your gonna do. Follow this step by step.
Pull your battery.
Put battery back in.
Turn on phone by holding vol down + power.
Plug in USB cable.
Enter fastboot.
In your adb folder (where you have the fastboot.exe, ect.) in cmd type: fastboot oem lock
(Not using your phone) Put the PH39IMG on your SD card
Pull your battery.
Put battery back in.
Turn on phone by holding vol down + power.
(Plug into the wall charger if your battery is low)
It should automatically detect and flash the PH39IMG.
Now your back to stock.
Now READ EVERY SINGLE WORD in this and then this.
After this if you still have no idea what to do - Don't pass go. Don't collect $100 You're done.
i try to enter fastboot but it goes to CWM based revovery v5.5.0.4. how can i get to HBOOT from here? and when i was there earlier it wouldnt install from sd because the battery was too low
It shouldn't go to recovery if your trying to boot into hboot. Either your doing something wrong, the phone is plugged in before you boot into hboot (if you plug your phone in while its off it'll automatically boot to CWM Recovery), or you seriously messed something up (beyond where I can help you).
well i WAS able t get into HBOOT fine until i got the message "change a battery" now i have to be plugged in to even get CWM. will the battery charge in cwm? my led flashes orange for about 2-3sec and then goes out..
It should. Chargemon file isn't correct hence why we don't have the standard charging screen IIRC.

Yes, it charges in CWM.
Once it's charged enough, try to adb reboot bootloader when plugged into the computer and see if it kicks you to HBoot. I forget whether you can launch ADB commands from CWM or not.
EDIT: Or just do the standard HBoot button combo.
ok, ill let it charge for a bit and try the PH36IMG. i really hope this works. i just got this phone thursday!
well the screen timed out so i assumed i would try to get to Hboot. i cant get to hboot. it will only go to CWM. can i install the .zip from here or does it need to be installed from hboot?

Are you plugged in while trying to get to hboot? If it's plugged in it will always go to CWM for some reason. There is no reason why your phone will boot to recovery and not hboot.
