I'm looking for a tablet and I was wondering if there is anything cheap out there that's is worth having. I don't want a complete POS, but I don't want to spend $400 neither. I'm just looking for something to take to work and watch some netflix on or browse the net. Also, if it can be rooted, even better.
I was just about to start a similar thread. I am looking for feedback on different tabs since I'm trying to decide what to get.
I like the fact that the Acer A500 has a usb port into which an external drive can be connected. I was wondering if any others have that. I also like the look of the Asus Transformer, but I've read that the build quality was less-than-ideal. Weight is also a concern for me, since I have arthritis in my hands.
Thoughts?
yeah well see what kind of info we get back. I may just go with a HP touchpad and see where it takes us in terms of android.
Im thinking the same thing as you guys.
Im gonna shop around for a good second hand deal, the likely candidates so far are the touchpad, the acer already mentioned or the advent vega.
If I could find a xoom at a bargain price I'd be pretty tempted too.
yeah I found a XOOM locally for 250 they say brand new on CL. I really dont trust CL but if I see it in person, and it works.. that might seal the deal.
Id really like android on mine ASAP, and that would lean me to the XOOM more so than the TP.. But only in due time IMO for the TP.

Hey everyone
Im inlove with this site and have had great success in routing and trying different roms for my Htc Hero CDMA, Amazing work from all of you.
i pose a question to you folks about these upcomming tablets that are being nocked off. And would like some input. Take this tablet from ebay
cgi.ebay.com/7-Notebook-WiFi-Google-Android-2-0-MID-Tablet-PC-/320619058357?pt=AU_comp_laptop&hash=item4aa66294b5
super awesome price for a pretty basic setup. Im in the research and development ideas of tablets. And have written off Apples due to some of the limitations.
I would love to be able to snag one of these cheap ones and experiment.
they come loaded with said to be Android 2.1 and looks alright but id love to be able to load in like the gps navigaitions and maybe update it to similar like services in Froyo 2.2 im thinking i wont be able to just download the root program and flash a cyanogen mod and were good to go? but at that price i wouldnt mind taking a stab at it almost.
anyone have any ideas?! or if this would be possible to flash?

The risk you take with a cheap "chinese" device is that it most likely won't receive any support. If nobody wants to buy it, and the manufacturer can't be found it's unlikely anybody other than yourself would be interested in trying to modify the firmware.
On the same point, the good manufacturers (Samsung, HTC etc) build decent mechanisms into their devicies to allow firmware upgrades, wheras cheap devices can be hit and miss.
Essentially, I would say that if you were to buy a cheap one such as that, you will be lucky to even get a root, but I wouldn't expect anything more.
Long story short, you want a good device, don't waste money on cheap junk, fork out for a GTab and get the real deal.
I tend to agree. "You get what you pay for" is definitely true in this case.
If what you want is a learning project, something to actually just "experiment" with, then yeah, some of the cheaper ones might not be a terrible idea. I learned a lot of the stuff I know from modifying some of the much cheaper devices (Velocity Micro Cruz Reader/Tablet). They were a good way to get into the swing of flashing new firmwares, modifying source code, etc.
That said, what it sounds like, is that you actually want a useful device, you just want it to be modded 'just so', for what you intend to use it for. If you want a GOOD device, that you actually intend to use for things like GPS, then I would have to say, avoid the cheap ones. They are usually buggy, updates are infrequent, and they just don't perform as well. Plus, there will be far less people working on them, so less people to provide assistance if you get stuck.
If you want a fast car that doesn't give you a lot of problems, buy a brand new Mustang.
If you want a cheap project, a way to learn about fixing and repairing cars, buy an 15 year old Geo Metro.
It all depends on what you're biggest priority is. The Galaxy Tab is a very solid, fast device, and has tons of potential for customization. If you intend to 'use' it (do something other than experiment) then I'd say this is the way to go.
I bought one of those cheap chinese tablets a few months ago, and I can honestly say I got what I paid for.
Poor screen, poor battery life, no support, no upgrades, no kernel source.
My advice - don't bother! I gave mine to my brother to use as a browser/media player, and he's happy with it, but for your requirements, I wouldn't bother.
Regards,
Dave
I found a used nook color for $150 on craigslist. Worth it to get and tinker around on then sell on ebay?
Vibrant - Bionix V
Sounds like a good price if it's not a scam. though you may not want to sell it after playing around with it. Once it gets setup with froyo and your favorite apps, it may become your device of choice.
If the deal is on the up & up, then ABSOLUTELY it's worth it. If you like tinkering with things, this'll keep you busy for awhile.
The only problem is that it will be like a puppy. You won't want to let it go once you've played with it long enough.
Seems legit. She wants a face to face transaction. I really want a tablet but I figured I would get the g tab or the toshiba one when it comes out.
Vibrant - Bionix V
Sounds good. That's a great price.
This is the first tablet I've ever owned. I don't count the Windows XP tablet that I had back in 2005 (the rotate-the-monitor-and-fold-over-keyboard variety). That thing was H-E-A-V-Y and had crappy battery life..
I've learned a lot about tablets having the Nook Color. They're not ready to replace my desktop PC or my full-blown laptop. I would not want to work on my resume or do a spreadsheet on my Nook. Holding with one hand and typing with the other is S-L-O-W. If I really need to find something on the Internet, I know that it's going to take at least 2x as long on my Nook.
Having to pinch-zoom a page in the browser so that my sausage-like fingers can click on next page links slows things down.
No regrets on the Nook; it's a great value for $250.
If you guys had 700.00 to spend on a tablet, which would you buy.
PS I rather have a sim HSPA+ compatible.
For what purpose?
Normal usage with a little advanced user (root etc etc)?
or completely crack the core out of it like DJ's dev style?
I am having one for flashing images, (dell-cheaper and powerful underdog which got DJ's blessing), one of in home entertainment - xoom wifi for now(later if transformer is really that good and not looking that ugly, may consider switch to it next week).
"edit": you meant 700.00 USD right? not Pound or Euro? LOL

USD, for surfing/checking emails, playing games. Once it has HC, I probably wont be romming it much. I wat 4g, not wifi only, I dont like the idea that I have to tether, even tho I have a MT4G that I can tether off of.
My options: G-Slate - 429.00 Transformer - 399 no 4g, Samsung 10.1 (Tmobile should be selling this soon), Iconia no 4g 399.00
Thanks

I say just wait for the new galaxy tab to come out. Thinner and lighter than the ipad2 Looks sexier than any other tab (IMO)
I was DEAD Set on the transformer.. I had the xoom and sold that so I could get the transformer.. The one thing I dont like about the transformer is the bezel. Even though it's the same size as the xoom 10.1 with the bezel it makes the transformer almost an inch wider. I jumped on getting the xoom and regretted it.. I wanted to jump on the transformer but now I think I'll hold out until june 8th to get the samsung. Because something tells me if I buy the transformer I will want to sell it for the new galaxy tab when it comes out.. so I might as well wait

In the current on-going tablet war, it is pretty much that if you decide to hold with aforementioned reason, you will hold it forever, with my full due respect.
If you are gadgets fan, just enjoy it and trade it later if budget don't permit buying all. Account it in your budget book as "rental" expense.
I am so sure that by the time of a couple of days ahead of samsung's release, there will be a couple of new tablets promised to hit the market days after that. maybe thinner, maybe new cpu, maybe just so sexy that you may want to wait more ^_^

hahaha no I'm gonna get the samsung for sure I want another tablet NOW but the only only reason why I'm not getting the transformer is the bezel. Have you seen it side by side with a xoom? The xoom was wide enough when in landscape mode and it was perfect for typing.. I think the transformer is going to be harder to type on because of the extra bezel.... That's really the only turn off for me..

Thanks

I haven't heard ANYTHING in the past few weeks about ICS, it's status, the work anyone else is doing (except Leo and Xron) or even the possibility of any updates to the beta we're on now. I've heard rumours of a min Jan launch for ICS on our TP, but can anyone else confirm?

Yes yes their one silly rule of not asking about when it's done. I didn't ask just about CM specifically, I also stated "the work anyone else is doing". I'm just looking for people keeping their ears to the ground and hearing things about whatever might be going on from whomever.

That's all we know for now. Hope that their work on ICS is so successfull that they literally have no time to post about updates
The vB2.8 Xron thread in the device forum has Leo talking all the time about how he's getting other really great devs involved. I'm sure 2.9 will be out soon, but CM9 is a different story.
Devs are always hard at work. They like to tinker... Patience is key. As for right now, Xron is good enough for me. I use it every day. Can do anything with it besides Skype (although I really haven't tried that yet).
"A little nonsense, now and then, is relished by the wisest men."
we have a very good xron rom so it's not difficult to wait few months for ics)
If you want to stay tuned , check dalingrin's twitter and cm's site.
Xron is pretty awesome. I'm thinking about getting a native android tablet like a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (someone is selling a brand new one for $300) and just selling this Touchpad. Maybe I'll wait it out and see. Has anyone had any issues with the casing cracking on their touchpad? What can I do to get warranty?

i will buy your touchpad if you decide to sell... I know a few devs ready and willing to buy it. This will have ICS long before Galaxy will have a good working one.
It will be a little bit for ICS. It's being worked on by whom I consider the best in the industry. Problem is we have NO GOOGLE or HP support for the touchpad. Then top it off we have a dual boot situation. Tonight I booted webOS for the first time in a month. That lasted an hour then back to android.
There is no way in Hell I would consider giving up my touchpad. No other tablet will have dual boot with two fantastic operating systems along with one that has native beats leaving the door cracked open for beats in android.
But, if you can't wait, name the price and what type of TP you have.
Thanks,

It's a 32 GB wifi Touchpad. I'm having a lot of issues with the casing getting cracks along the speakers and charging port. HP better warranty this. Apparently it's happened to a lot of people. Like I said, I don't know what I'm going to do yet. It works alright right now, a little on the heavy side and I have a few android phones I can sell to make up the $300 someone wants for their brand new never opened Galaxy Tab 10.1. I bought the HP Touchpad knowing that because WebOS was linux based that Android would be possible eventually. It's just development is moving a long a little too slowly. That's not including your ROM though, Leo. You're doing some awesome work for the tablet and in fact am the only reason why I'm holding on to it this long. But eventually the weight thing might be the swaying factor and the fact that a naively supported device is going to have so many less issues and small problems.
We'll see what I decide to do. I have someone looking at a few phones I threw up for sale and what HP says about the warranty on this thing. Max I would make you pay? The original $157.50 I paid for it plus shipping.

well the cracks around the speakers is cosmetic. Contact HP Support they will replace the casing.
I had the same issue with my TP. The customer support was good. They sent me a return box and label. All you have to do is to pack you TP as per instructions and drop it at nearby UPS store. I received the repaired TP within a week.
Act fast before the warranty expires.
Do you really expect these guys to be working on this much over Christmas? They have lives too, you know. Xron has become a great ROM lately as well and is getting new releases all the time. I'm sure ICS will be out some time this month.

My contacts tell me that making ICS for the Touchpad is almost like starting over. They have to get the drivers and all the goodies fixed before anything even close to stable can be released. It's sort of like when we waited for Gingerbread to come out. Man, it seemed like it took forever, but it was WELL worth the wait.
Patience, young ones.
Well I called HP and told them that it's cracking. They said they're going to send me a box that I can send the Touchpad back in and they'll fix the casing or give me a new one. I think I might end up getting it replaced, not touching it for fear of possible cracking AGAIN and wait to see what we're gonna get with ICS. Since we have all month to wait anyway it's a good time to send this Touchpad back to get it replaced. I just need to make sure I uninstall all the android based stuff and reset partitions so they don't see what I did.
why would anyone care about the TouchPad when new tablets are coming out
Okay, so my school just auctioned off a Bluetooth Laser Keboard and the cash went to charity. I didn't get the keyboard, because my IT supervisor told me they're not all that good and I should just get a regular keyboard.
I was wondering if there were any good quality laser keyboards? Something $150 or less. A used one is fine. Also, what about things not working? I haven't really seen anything about them and wanted to know if people knew more about them or had good experiences.
I've seen things in different threads, but they're all dated 2010-2012. I'd prefer something more up-to-date. LoL!!
Thanks for any help. I like the thought of having one, that's why I want to waste my money on something like that.
I owned two, 3-4 years ago, the Celluon version one by its main competitor (since gone out of business, or bought by Celluon, or something). Neither worked well. I recently bought the Celluon evoMouse (it was on massive closeout discount somewhere) and found it to be just as unsatisfying. It just seems like one of those technologies that is an absolutely amazing idea but which requires a real finesse to make it actually preferable over a conventional keyboard/mouse, and they just haven't gotten it quite right yet. It's just inaccurate enough, just flaky enough, just whatever enough to make me give up on them and go back to a regular keyboard.
