ive found a number of guides out there on how to build a custom rom. i followed one, didnt realize i had the boot loaders in there, and bricked my phone. i got it back to life after a couple weeks and $60.
my question is this; so as to prevent that crap from happening again, which guide is best suited for i897uckh3?
EDIT: i dont like to ask for help, i prefer to search and read. well, that cost me $60, so i figure i earned the right to ask this ignorant of a question.
to clarify, this is the one that i followed and black screen of death'd my phone. now that i got one working again id like to give it another shot but with more caution this time. mind you i plan to build on a kh3 base.
in theory would this work?
umm just remove the bootloaders....
right i understand that part and dont know why i didnt the first time around but my question is has anyone successfully used this method with kh3
might help if i linked it. brb getting link.

i know not to use much of anything from that post as far as software goes aside from the progys used for building and can find all the resources mentioned there for the captivate vs the i9000.

I got help here to root it so I could get a proggy on there that would allow me to get fonts in larger sizes and yes, I'm very happy. HOWEVER, my HOT SPOT feature is not working and I"m guessing that pimpin' it is what did it and NO, I'm too stupid to fix it and the guy that helped me rooting it had no idea what to do. I'm close to Charlotte, NC and I was wondering if there's anyone around here that could help me? Ie, rooting it AND getting my hot spot stuff to work which is one of the reasons I bought this one and paid a small fortune for it.
Thanks and yes, I would be glad to pay a lil' sumptin' for it, take you out to lunch or help YOU out in any way.

you may be a noob, but seriously you didn't really expect anyone to have sympathy did you?, we all started somewhere.. hint: start by reading the stickies
God forbid someone would have sympathy but NO, the crying icon was there to spruce the thread up.
I have gotten great help in forums and I've run into a lot of a$$holes if that answers your question?
As for reading the stickies, I have a reading comprehension problem so that doesn't work for me. Of course, you may want to say that this is bull$hit
and I'm just trying to make it easy on my self and yes, I am but no, the reading thing is not bull and reading instructions are useless.
Last time, I had someone talk me through it in a chat and it worked but took around TWO hours. This would not have happened if it had been
done through here or e mail. You'd be talking days or weeks just getting the thing rooted.
However, I"m not sure how helpful your reply is? Plenty of that around the web. Lots of replies in help forums but LITTLE help. Mostly people that
think their $hit don't stink and that they can say anything just 'cause they're anonymous. Sounds like my neighbor. She used to talk all kinds of
$hit about EVERYONE and tell me how she stood up to someone and told them this or that to their face but she never did. Just told ME how damn
cool she was but I never saw any proof of it.
Yeah, it's easy to have an opinion online and make comments about any damn thing...
guiri_too,
Post in your local listings (Craigslist, for example). I'm sure there's probably someone in your area that can help you out.
An online forum isn't really the best setting for what you need. You need someone that knows what they're doing (no offense) to look at your phone and do what needs to be done. Otherwise... read through the threads, find rooting/modding instructions, get a custom recovery image on, make a backup, and flash a new ROM.
If you didn't know what you were getting yourself into, you shouldn't have done it. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, either.
If I ONLY stuck to buying things I completely understood, I would NOT have a damn thing today and no worries, I wasn't insulted.
As for craigslist, haven't found much there but morons but I can give it a try.
However, I KNOW there's plenty of knowledge here, the trick is to find it. LIke I said, I got great help rooting it but now I see there's some problem which I ASSUME is from the rooting.
Note, NOTHING against the guy that helped me out, he did a great job and was very patient so I have no complaints, it's just that now that I found this out, I'd like to get it fixed.
Georg
well man, what you can do is give us some details too.. are you on a custom rom, or stock w/only root, also do you have stock recovery or kosh(sp) or Amon Ra's
If you know how to check you can simply go to about phone and check in there if you are on custom, usually in kernal it will have the devs name.. to find you bout recovery you get the app quickboot(in app market) and hit recovery if you have list of options and i mean a list then you have a custom recovery, if you only have 3 options then its stock..
If you got custom rom& recovery, then you can flash a different rom, this could have broken wifi or something along the way.. so what you do is find a custom rom you like( i say go with enomther) that one is close to stock as possible but with all perks taht are really needed
im new to the n1 communtiy as i barely got my n1 rooted, but i had my g1 for over a year or so and had bout 3 of those, and not much has change except the way to root it
Okie dokie Spanky, I'll see if I can figure it out and post back. I was hopin' someone local that's got more brains than I could pimp it but that's what I get for livin' in the boonies I guess

Um...that depends. Do you want to?
If you're comfortable with flashing then I would, if not then probably no.

should you rom?
if you have to ask....
NO.
you should read.
then decide for yourself.
and know what you are doing before you are the 4th person in 24 hours to PERMANENTLY brick thier phone.
rom? no.... not yet at least...

I absolutely agree with this answer. If you are thinking of flashing a ROM, what is the reason you are thinking about doing it? If you decide to go for it, then absolutely make sure you know completely what you are doing by reading as much as you can. Research first will save grief and frustration later. Let's just say I learned that the hard way. The only time I had any issues was when I didn't follow this advice.
Good luck with whichever way you decide to go.

Just take time to read and understand the while process before you start flashing. DO NOT try and figure out stuff as you go, as that is how stupid mistakes are made and you mess up your phone.
Check to make sure the 3 button combo for recovery and download modes are working, and just know and follow the steps laid out in the many tutorials you can find here on xda. If you can follow directions at all, your phone will soon be doing sweet ****, and you will probably become addicted to flashing and trying new things.
I am not all that knowledgeable about how stuff works, so I never try and modify stuff that hasn't been tried and tested by somebody else, and I've never run into any serious problems. I've flashed too many roms to remember, and never screwed up my phone beyond a simple fix, all thanks to a little careful reading.
Once you flash your first rom successfully, the process is simple and fun. Just make sure and read the thread for each rom you want to try carefully so that you know of all possible issues, and you shouldn't have any problems.

Make sure you know all the worst things that can happen. Not to scare you from doing it. On the contrary, once you know what's the worst, and you know how to fix it or prevent it, you're good to go.
Like everyone here says (because it's true) READ everything. Read the WHOLE OPs and multiple pages of everything. If someone had problem with something, they probably already mentioned it somewhere in the 23482 pages (it sucks, but you rather spend some time reading than have a dead phone).
At first everything will be uncertain (first time watching the bar go across the download mode screen when flashing from Odin) and sometimes you'll feel like you've bricked your phone. Just read the threads about ACTUAL bricked phones to know what NOT to do.
Actually, what I suggest is to find a rom that you like, but more importantly has REALLY thorough documentation about how to install. Once you do it a couple of times it'll be smooth sailing from there, and you'll be able to work with any kind of rom easily (terminology and stuff becomes more familiar too).

So you ask the same question in a different format. Tell us that you at least read some of the replies above. Right?
Talk to people that have rommed (if that's a word. If not, then Copyright bdgiese90 2011). If they know your phone well and can help if you have questions beyond what is answered in OP's, then you can make a choice from that too. But seriously. Do your reading first. Installing a ROM isn't something other people decide for you.
And one more thing. Don't ask the same question again with different wording. Read what all of these intelligent people are posting to you. Believe it or not, they ARE helpful

You sound ambivalent and unsure. Bad combination. Step away from the phone before you hurt it.
Just bought a Tmo HD7 today and need some help on what to do with it. It seems that if I go and update the phone that if I ever want to throw a custom rom I would need to downgrade then upgrade again..sooo I was wondering if I should just update from Msoft or I should put a custom rom on already.
I also need help on a Tut if I do a custom rom because it is a little weird on the wording or I cant seem to understand. I also cant find the sticky for noobs to put a custom rom.
Thanks again guys.
I checked my bootloader and its a 1.xx .
I have been reading lots of comments and lots of people say that if you have an HD2 then you should stick with that.
I was wondering if I should take the phone back since it seems to be very closed sourced compared to the old Win-Mo phones.
there is a tutorial on how to do all that stickied on this thread. link is in my signature.
Thanks for some reason I couldnt find that one but it is really laid out thank you.
One more question: Is the phone worth it? I mean is the community going to have a long life or is it going to have a short one since it is so closed. I would like to keep the phone since it looks nice but if I cant really do anything with it I'll just stick with my HD2.

First of all, I am going to assume (perhaps wrongly) that you are 14 years-old (from your user name), and believe me when I tell you: I know that age is hard, and I know because I've been there, however, no matter how hard it was for me I knew that if I dared asking my mother what a word meant, I'd get immediate attention and instructions to f-off and check up on a dictionary (there was no wikipedia nor google back then) and that no-one else was going to do for me what I didn't do by myself, it is with such background that I want to tell you something:
Last saturday I decided to try ICS on my N1, I had no idea where to start since it had been over 8 months when I last did anything to my phone. Still it took me 25 minutes to not only find the right thread, read it, understand it, download the stuff I needed, and read again to make sure I am not doing something dumb, it also was enough time to actually do the whole process.
Now, considering you already found your way into XDA-Developers and you know how to read threads and know how to post questions, I'd say you have wasted approximately 1 hour thinking somebody is actually going to give you the ROM for ICS and Blackrose, let alone baby-walk you through the process.
I am going to assume that most devs are ignoring this thread (and rightly so) as well as most respected members (and I'd like to consider myself a quiet, self-respected member) but still, I do believe its good to take a bit of time from everyday routine to let someone else know "hey! you are doing it wrong" and hopefully get into that person's head and make that little switch go click.
If after all of this you still feel entitled to have someone hand you over a couple of files, please by all means head over to this location: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2031989&postcount=45
Thanks and have a great life!
srry im very new here and i couldnt get my way around and ive been checking for hours on the files for ics on the N1 and had nothing but thanks for ur reply
as i said, again im extremely new to all of this and i dont know how to put ROMs in the phone and how to just do any of this if anyone can just give me something from where i can start i will be gladly appreciated
See, now that is different and worth of paying at least a little bit of attention. However I don't believe you have spent hours without making some sense of anything, at least you know about ICS and Blackrose, you may have a rough idea of what you want to accomplish, and so I'll point you in the right direction by telling you to look for the very first thread on the android development forum for nexus one, the one referring to the wiki and to now read it instead of skipping it as you probably did the first time. I'm sure if you read through it you'll understand the basics and will be able to figure it out really soon.
Good luck.

I use this one in my (now replaced by SGS3) nexus one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366897
You should read the instructions carefully, the process involves a few steps...
Note that there are 2 o 3 ICS ROMs for Nexus One, and they all have some glitches (USB tethering, camera, SoDs) but they are quite usable.
Long time xda fan, first time poster. So, I have a bone stock AT&T Galaxy Note 3 N900AUCUEOC1 running lollipop 5.0. For about a year now I've been contemplating rooting it but I'm worried I'm gonna jack my phone up. Besides replacing my lcd screen I haven't done really too much with it. This will be my first attempt at rooting any phone and I wanted to ask a few questions to get some clarification and direction.
First, what currently is the easiest way to root a droid for someone that doesn't speak a lick of tech?
I've read 10 different ways but if anyone would know, its you guys. Does Kingo work with what I have?
What do I need to do prior to root? I.e, what do I need to download?
Also, could you recommend a decent ROM? Whats a good backup app that will actually work?
Lastly, I have a game ive been playing for a couple years and I dont sign in, it recognizes my phone or something, its on my sd card but will i lose it when I wipe my phone? Thanks in advance for your time.
Cassidy
I would never discourage some one from rooting their phone, however, you have chosen a hard place to start. You need to become familiar with odin, and /or safetrap. There are great instructions already posted, but unless you have a working knowledge of Odin, you are going to cause yourself a great deal of headache.
I suggest finding a friend who has done it, and have them walk you through it the first time.
By the way, I have been rooting Android phone since the original Motorola Droid. And I have this one rooted. But I not so easy for people new to the process.
Any way you go, I hope it works great for you!

Thanks for the concern. I used to be pretty smart. Ive watched and read a ton about odin and I guess people just make it look super easy. I've noticed theres a different variation for every model of droid so I gjust need to find the right one and figure out what to do before and after the video stopped. Im just hoping I can find some help here. Thanks again

Best I seen about Odin with a video http://www.samsungodindownload.com/odin-tutorial/ and this is the Odin I use http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3109599&d=1420980613 Once you think you're ready http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/help/att-note-3-lollipop-t3100657 and post #4 has all the links you need. You are Lollipop so you WILL need to do all four files (first picture shows, if you try the All-In-One you will have problems). I'm on here everyday so if you need any help post here or send a message. I don't mind helping and NO, you do not have to donate to me.
Thanks a bunch Rooted! Thats gonna simplify thing a bunch, I really hope. Im sure id be bricked right now if my girl didnt catch me getting ready to do it and beat me up, she bought it for me on my bday. Needless to say she didnt approve. Ha. Ill wait till tomorrow i think. But I appreciate your help, you're a good man.
