Question Icon Replacement Guide
posted this in q&a- but had no response
Hi guys Im looking for guidance, I know it's possible to break open an apk file, find the .png being used for the icon and replace it with another .png. Can someone please guide me on how to do this, where to look , what to do, framework ect, I ve used the search button - but havn't found a definitive guide - looking at changing dock icons, txt, home ect and app icons. Ive found Android Asset Studio, which can be used to reform the icons for android - but unsure on the whole process.
Can someone shove me towards a definitive, easy to follow guide or produce 1 or give me a guide on at least 1 dock icon (software needed ect, ect)
Many thanks guys
you can use desktop visualizer to change app icons

Hi,
what's in your mind? Do you want a single APK that overwrite every .png files?
Do you wanna change the icon time by time?
I can't understand!!!
In any case, if u wanna get custom icons and replace them, u can use as WORGERM wrote, desktop visualizer.
A very easy app that allows you to insert custom widgets on homescreen (u can choose how big they have to do 1x1 2x1 3x1 etc) and the possibility to change the icon (choose it from your SD card) and the application to start when click on the icon.
To get the specific icons for replacement, i sugget you to use Photoshop.
I hope to help you with this post.
Bye
You can try this .. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=927405
thanks for the responses guys, looking at individual apk, .png replacement and possible dock and probably apk icon pack edits

Quick question for users of this app.
I have cyanogen's rom installed and a really awesome ahome theme developed by crazydudeproductions. I am getting horribly annoyed with the lag i get from ahome and am considering going back to the default android homescreen. I know i can use the same wallpaper for the default home screen. Will better cut allow me to change all the icons to match what i have with ahome? I don't have the actual resized icons, i just sent the photobucket links to crazydude. Do i have to resize those icons myself, or will better cut do that? Thanks for your time!
yes it can...but next time PLEASE put questions in the right fourm
Uh, if you can't post questions about an APPLICATION here then anyone who has ever posted about an application and then asked a question about it should have their thread removed. I'm from TX, but you must be from the country dude cause you are a dumbass!
save the theme you want to sd then transfer to your computer.. open it up with winrar or anything and in the drawable will be all the icons and they should be the right size.. from there put them on your sd and apply them all with better cut ..im pretty sure even if they are 60x60 as long as u use the use icon image option it will resize it by itself (which kinda sucks because u can never have anything but 48x48 on homescreen then)
You need to get the apk for the ahome theme you're using, extract them, and then either pack them into an icon pack apk or just put them in a folder on your sd card
Got my answer thanks to Draxter!
Thread can be closed, thks!
I am trying to create an icon pack similar to the one by smithtech, which can be found here: http://androidspin.com/2011/01/13/app-drawer-icon-pack-for-adw-launcher/
Having made icons for metamorph before, its not the images that are giving me an issue, but finding documentation on how to create the xml and arsc code files that are built into the zip file.
Any help is appreciated, thx in advance.
exact same question!
posted this several times on some other Droid forums but haven't had any luck yet.
i know this is old, but I've been searching it as well for a few hours. lol.
I went on LauncherPro forums, and they posted how to do them, dated May 19: http://www.launcherpro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7754
Hi.
I am sufin' the web to find clues about custom adw icons packs to create mine.
I found a wiki explaining how to create themes for ADW. There is a vid on custom icons on this page : code.google(dot)com/p/adw-launcher-android/wiki/ADWThemeGuide#Getting_Started_On_Your_ADW.Launcher_Theme
I'm currently testing it.
Hi.
I found figured out a simple method to create an kind of icon pack for ADW.
Using an already existing theme.apk, i inserted the custom.png in the drawables folders and finally resigned it.
Using adw i can select to apply only the icons from a given theme. It works if i only add/replace .png. Howewer adw crashed when i tried to suppress the unwanted icons in drawable-hdpi (i only wanted to change the icons appearing in the drawer)
Since i'm a beginner in themeing, I would be thankful if someone could give me some help or advices if it is possible to remove those unneeded icons.png without crashing the theme adw.
Edit: Removng original png files is not allowed with simply winrar and such. However the ADWLauncher theme wiki allows to create own themes/icon packs
I'm using one of the stock HTC Sense 2.5 skins as a basis for a custom skin. I'm using apktool to access the files and build my updated apk file. I've found a lot of the the things I want to replace, but I'm a bit stumped on where to find some of the button backgrounds and background panels (I don't see anything that looks exactly like these in any of the subfolders for the skin I'm working with). I'm attaching two screen shots with big orange arrows pointing to the specific parts I'm looking for. I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone can point me to where these items are located and what they are called.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
Id say look in the htccamera.apk, framework, settings, htc res or system ui! Its so hard to find the correct png from all the different locations? Ive been in & out of the Rom frameworks & have modded my phone ui but those ones dont ring a bell sorry mate
Thanks. I hadn't thought of checking any of those files since these specific items seem to change according to the skin. I'll dig through them (especially the framework one, and see what I can find).
I am also interested in modify icons (specialy on my home screen) and cud you tell me what soft to use? Tku in advance

look in the folders like i said in post #2 plus try settings, rosie, ect.... you can mod almost any apk & png files, just dont mod the htc_ime.apk! Anything goes wrong.... just reflash the rom before you had problems
Anybody know what needs to be defined in an apk for Go Launcher to see it as an icon pack?
(And without using their "thememaker")

I have the same question!
+1 for icon pack
studying urcipo
How detailed of an explanation are you looking for here?
If you know everything you need to know about making an icon pack and just want the easiest no BS answer, it is this:
Create a Go Launcher Theme, changing only the icons. Yes, it must start off as a theme, just change only the icons if you wish. Assign each icon to its proper internal activity name Compile into an .apk and then sign the .apk. I'm guessing the red bold parts are the things that you would need to look into and are possibly not doing now.
More? Ok.
You don't have to use theme factory, you can use a template somebody else has created. ThemeFactory makes a good reference to the template, not the other way around. The template is a much nicer thing, trust me.
I'll start off with the simple-ish version I guess. In order to be seen as an "icon pack", all of the included icons are automatically assigned to their proper spots, and the user doesn't have to change each icon individually. I'm guessing this is what you mean by an "icon pack"?
Shortest answer on how to do this: Create a Go Launcher Theme that only changes icons.
You don't want to use their "Theme Factory". Ok. You have a few options here then.
1) "drag-and-drop" your own icons on top of somebody else's iconpack.
2) Eclipse . I'm hoping you know something about Eclipse
If you know nothing of the Android SDK or Eclipse, and aren't ready to study a bit and learn, go with option 1) or use themefactory. Either way, it'll be defined as a Go Launcher Theme in the end. But with only icons to apply.
But I'm assuming you either know something or dont mind learning. You can start easy with a template.
You'll probably be using a Go Launcher Theme Template in every case...rather than handcoding every single icon name out...unless you're really just hardcore in love with writing code.
I think this may be the best template. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421724 Worth the read. Getting a bit outdated with some of the new/chanaged SDK coding, but it's pretty easy to figure out what to change on your own.
Also, Quinny889 has two of them made. . Reminder...this is NOT the dreaded ThemeFactory app . These are templates that you import into Eclipse and customize/fill-in. The template then does the work of "dealing with" the Go Launcher/SDK compatibility issues.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324378 Best one. Recommend using this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1314753 Older version, takes some tweaking to make work, but far more streamlined/simple once you do figure it all out. I recommend the newer template.
(Both are templates courtesy of Quinny 899!)
They come with instructions in PDF form as well...quite simple if you take the time.
Basically, fill in with your own icons. Compile the APK. Download/use ZIPSIGNER2 or similar APK signing program on the APK so it can be installed.
http://activities.droidicon.com/ -->You can get the names of the "activities" you assign your icons to here. For example, search for go launcher and you'll see what I mean.
Yes, it's a bit tedious in any case to assign each icon to its proper spot.
The TL;DR version to answer your question if you already knew what you were doing: Grab a template, build it up, compile. Sign it.

There are resources around for every type of launcher, just search! Hope I helped at least a tiny bit.
launcherpro DOT com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7754 More in-depth, still very good reading even though it's LauncherPro.

Hi guys,
I've been searching the web for a long and I didn't find what I was looking for. I search an icon very minimalistic which represent a bubble from a comic. I would like the psd of it and I want a free icon. I'm a very newbie on Photoshop so I didn't achieve to design an icon I like.
Here are exemple of icon I want (but not free)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1912545 (dashboard 2)
http://dribbble.com/shots/455868-50-Free-Delicious-Berries-Icons
http://dribbble.com/shots/119218-Picons-me-Launched- (the first one)
So if you can find icon like that which is free (don't want to spend 30$ for just one icon) it would be great.
Thanks!

Bumb, nobody ?
I'm pretty sure Pfaff has some of those, .PSD is in his thread also has Photoshop tutorials.

Thanks for your answer but I didn't find what I was looking for. I want a very simple and minimalisitc icon and Pfaff has only complicated and colorful one.
I also checked the .psd of his base set but the icon for sms doesn't match with icon I want.
Anyone else ?
Thanks
