[Q] G1 versus the Cliq XT - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
If you had a choice between the G1 and the Motorola Cliq XT, which would you go with? I bought the Cliq XT a few months ago because my G1 just didn't have the memory or battery life to get me through the day. Then I discovered the world of ROMs and rooting and have switched back and forth between the two and just can't decide.
My G1 is running GingerYoshi 1.4 and my Cliq XT is running CM7. I bought an extended battery for the G1, but it does make it a little bigger. Any suggestions for battery life that don't increase the size of the phone?
I LOVE the keyboard on the G1. That is why I've kept it thus far. I also did a lot of reading on this board and thanks to you guys was able to partition the SD so I can install a lot more apps than previously (another reason why I switched to the Cliq XT).
As you can tell, I like my G1 more, but it seems like the Cliq is faster and a bit more reliable. What would you guys do?
I know it's ultimatley up to me, but appreciate any advice.
Nick

I enjoy it better than the G1. It has more RAM so that's a plus. It's essentially the same phone but with bigger nand and RAM.

If I have to pick between the two, natually it will be the Motorella cliq XT, since it got more memory etc... Still keep you G1 as the backup etc... thou. You can also use your G1 in support for ROM testing for these nice DEV here in G1 community. That is what I am planning to do once I get my new phone (right now I am looking at getting Motorella ATRIX).

Saying goodbye to G1....

Thanks to this forum and especially Cyanogen, I was able to enjoy my G1 much more than what I would have. As much as I loved my G1, it still frustrated me and was ready for something better....I broke down and got a Motorola Droid. There are a million reviews, so won't bore you with redundant info, but give a quick comparison to my G1 experience.
My G1 was running Cyanogen 4.2.3.1 and I have owned it since last years pre-order.
What I love about the Droid
1. Speed- the phone is FAST...not just running multiple apps, but network speeds put T-Mobile to shame. Downloading and installing apps takes seconds. I can use Google Navigation and run Pandora and text away and the phone runs flawlessly, has yet to freeze or get bogged down.
2. Display - it's gorgeous and with 2.0, the icons and pics look amazing.
3. Android 2.0 - Google backs up all your settings, including bookmarks and apps. I had to exchange my first Droid and when I signed into my Google account on the replacement, all my apps were automatically downloaded and installed, my background changed, and my bookmarks were all there. Doesn't store app data, but still nice. Nice integration with Facebook without being in your face. Lots of neat touches here and there, seems like a much more finished and polished OS. Google Navigation is a great product, look forward to updates.
4. Fit and Finish - compared to the G1, the feel is sooo much better.
5. Battery - so far been great. Haven't put down the phone since Friday and it lasts all day no problem.
What I don't like
1. G1 keyboard way better. More spacious and just easier to use.
2. Sound quality - using Pandora, my G1 was crisp and clear, with the Droid, I get distortion if I turn it up to loud through the 3.5 jack to my car stereo
3. No root - no home screen rotation, wi-fi tethering, etc.
Happy for you. Right now all of us T-Mo guys are jealous of Verizon subscribers.
Unless they can match it, our carrier is going to lose all the enthusiasts they gained when the G1 launched.
Your comparing a phone thats out of its leauge(hero vs droid vs cliq s better)? Anyway thnks for review verizon has bigest network so theres no reason to put down us tmo users.
Yeah I love my g1 but I am wanting a new android phone also. Verizons pricing is way to ridiculous for me. I was tempted to get a sprint hero but it looks like the hero is going to be outdated soon. I kind of like the sprint samsung moment with its 800 mhz processor, so its between this or the behold II unless there is something coming soon that I should wait for?

Haha...not putting anyone down. I didn't even realize I had been with T-Mobile for so long but when I called to cancel my service, she said but you have been with us for 8 years, is there anything we can do. I didn't have the heart to say quit getting crap phones. I shouldn't say crap, but every phone they have or are getting just has at least one major flaw (for me). I have to have a physical keyboard, although honestly with the bigger screen on the Droid, the onscreen keyboard isn't so bad and because I am not completely used to the physical keyboard, been using the onscreen quite a bit.
Verizon is a little pricey, but through work I get a 20% discount, so it actually works out cheaper than T-Mobile. I was paying just at $100 a month with taxes and Verizon is going to be $10-15 cheaper.
I am just happy to finally see so many Android products being released. I was a bit nervous the first few months with my G1 because it just didn't seem to be catching on and the apps were lacking. I think a lot of big comnpanies took a wait and see approach and they are finally producing some quality apps (like Pandora, etc.). Competition is good for us all and I hope the G1 keeps evolving through the guys here that keep making ROMS for it.
just ordered a new ext batt for my g1. i'm keeping it until i see something that is a major hardware upgrade that wont have to be upgraded soon. maybe bt 3.0?

HD2 Vs. N1

I am sorry if this has been covered in other posts, but I currently have the HD2. I love it except for the fact that it lags and I basically have to reset it once or twice every day because it freezes on me. I am thinking about getting an N1, and would like to know if there is anyone else that has gone from an HD2 to the N1 and what their feelings are on it. I had the G1 when it first came out, but since they didn't have 3G in my area for almost a year after it came out, I got rid of it. Plus it didn't have a lot of things I really wanted like saving MMS and the like. However, now it does. Anyway, any feedback would be appreciated.

The HD2 is really beautiful hardware I gotta admit but it's downfall is the software, IMHO.
I say the N1 easily, especially with the rumored 2.2 update coming up in the horizon. Beautiful hardware combined with awesome software, I can't imagine going back to WinMo after spending a few months with Android.
It also might be better to jump on a new N1 now since Google might be pulling the plug on their web sales and going carrier only.
went from nexus to hd2......back to nexus

I had the HD2 and liked it, but after I tried N1 there is no looking back. I love the speed and the OS with the Market is unbeatable. No regrets.
I'm a former HD2 user, now converted to the Nexus One. My story is a ittle different than the other posters. I actually loved everything about the HD2, and was hardpressed to trade it when it came time to. It is truly a pocket computer, and which gives you the ability to tweak it to death as long as you have access to the registry and custom roms installed. I actually found myself turning Sense off at times becomes I didnt need to glitter all the time. Task Manager is your best friend too. I only got rid of it because I got bored with it after a while.
That said, Android is the **** for its own reasons as well. You have the ability to mod it to you liking, you get a more polished OS overall and access to thousands of useful apps without paying a hefty price, or paying at all.
to each his own.

"Old" Motorola Droid offered to me for free...

So a guy I know has this "busted" Motorola Droid, the original model, with an apparently shattered glass/digitizer that I'd need to replace (as I understand it the LCD is fine), and while I'm a huge fan of getting myself yet another HTC HD2 and working with it, since this is gonna be a complete freebee I figured I'll do some experiments with it.
Is the original Droid still useful for many people, since it came out well over 2 years ago? I am not expecting ICS on it (although I see a few people making claims they're working on it), and with the low end specs - compared to today's high end "pocket rockets" with dual cores and 3x the speed or more, I figure I'll end up using the Droid (after I get it functional again) as a PMP actually; a makeshift "Droid touch" of sorts (iPod touch pun) since I don't plan on using it as an actual cellphone anytime soon. Already have 2 phones with NET10 and I can't do anything to the Droid to flash it and make it compatible so... it's basically going to be a PMP for me.
I'm guessing if I can get Android 2.3 on it then I should be able to run all the apps that I've used with my HTC HD2 in the past running Gingerbread, shouldn't be any issues aside from them just running slower overall because of the Droid's far slower clock speed.
I'm sure overclocking is a potential but I need to do a lot more research to see what's possible there without causing damage to the device. Just because it's free doesn't mean I have intentions on destroying the damned thing.
Just wanted to ask if other people still have their Droid 1st gen and what they're using them for if anyone cares to say. Also, what kinds of cases, docks, accessories might you be using, especially with battery life too and any recommendations for something with more capacity/time available.
Thanks, and have fun, always...

[Q] New Motorola Milestone

I had an OG droid back in the day on Verizon. LOOOVED it. I'm pretty rough on phones nowadays. Anyways, make a long story short, I'm no longer on Verizon (they raped me), I'm now on AT&T (Family plan, paying a third of what I used too) and ran across a brand new milestone. Am I just crazy and feeling nostalgic, or does whoever is left on here think I should jump at it???
I realllllllyyyyyy miss my droid lol. Gone through an Incredible, Admire, Two SII's, and a Galaxy Nexus in the meantime...
Tell me what you guys think!
Crazy nostalgia.
I moved on to a Nexus 4 and regret nothing!
I still use my Milestone 1 as a hotspot - which means I just turn airplane mode on and off.
As soon as I try to do anything else it feels like self-punishment.

Mabe you should use another rom on your milestone?
I've been trying almost every ROM for the past year or two.
It's unbelievable how good CM7 works - but still, Milestone's tiny RAM is a pain in the neck.

[Q] Should I switch from Verizon Galaxy S4 to Verizon Moto X (2014)?

I've had a rooted S4 since it came out last May, so over a year and a half, which I love, besides a few problems, and I was looking at the Moto X. I have read a bunch and I see that there is no root for the Verizon version. Has anyone made the switch from a rooted device that they loved to the unrooted Moto X? Curious if it is worth it or not as there are some Xposed modules I use quite a bit.
I came from the S3 on Verizon, which I had unlocked and rooted the whole time I owned it. Prior to that I had the OG EVO on Sprint, which was unlocked and rooted as well. I had a blast on the EVO and gained a lot of value from unlock/root then plus it was just exciting and enjoyable tinkering with it. The S3 experience was good in that I had AOSP ROMs, but I basically kept ending back on CM. While CM provided the latest version of Android, I was so tired of the problems that never seemed to go away-- SMS/MMS, bluetooth, GPS and more. It was to the point I would be reluctant to flash any update knowing a new problem would surface. I eventually just moved to a TouchWiz ROM and left it to avoid the problems. TWRP was buggy too, so I had to bounce around recoveries as well. That obviously is a part of using a rooted phone and messing with it, but I guess I got a little burned out with that. If you have free time and enjoy that whole process of testing things and tinkering, you would probably miss root/Xposed. For me, I wanted stock Android that worked. I think Moto's customizations are very smart and useful like a custom ROM. I miss cf.Lumen, which required root, but otherwise I like this phone and like having the latest Android. The Nexus 6 was too big for me. If you can handle that size (and price until there is a on-contract option), that could be an option. I also really enjoyed building a custom Moto with a leather back. You could write down everything you use root/Xposed for and see what alternatives exist in an unrooted world and go from there. If there are no deal breakers, I think it is a great phone with great software.

I appreciate you taking your time to write that up. I am almost 100% on buying it, but I just noticed the Droid Turbo. My real main reasons for not getting it already is the Non removable small battery and the camera. I have heard both sides of the fences with some saying they are fine, and some saying they are horrible. The Droid Turbo seems to have better camera and battery, but then again, I have heard both sides of the fences again, with people saying it isn't that much better, if even better at all. But the Moto X is so sexy compared to the Droid Turbo. The Non removable battery just really annoys me though. I go to a lot of conventions, and I like with the G4 having a spare battery to switch and instantly be at 100%.
I just can't wait until they come out with the PERFECT phone.......if that ever happens.....
Every time I'm at phone decision time I feel the same way. This one is too big. This one has an older chip... different resolution... AMOLED.... LCD... SD card on and on. I passed on the Turbo because I didn't like the back and old navigation bar icons. Spec-wise it is solid. This Moto X is my first non-removable battery and non-SD card phone. I got past the battery thing because I'm a working stiff. Most weeks I'm at the office then home. On weekends I use the turbo charger at home to give me the boost for the evening and I always have a couple of external battery packs for insurance and convenience. It is surprising how nice an external battery pack is even if you are just outside or somewhere away from a charger. Don't have to power down and get to keep on going. When I travel for work, I've noticed there are built in breaks where I can let my phone charge on a pack, e.g. airport security, checking out of hotels, catching rides, meeting suppliers at places, so I haven't found the battery to be an issue. We'll see how I feel about the SD card thing a year from now or so. I got the 32GB for $50 in hopes of at least making it manageable. The Moto X is a good looking phone though that is for sure.
I had the original Moto X (with unlocked bootloader), loved it. Then I got a new job that have me the S4 (which I rooted). Didn't really like it but still have it. Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to upgrade to the 2nd Gen Moto X, so now I'm carrying with me the S4 and new X (just to give some reference).
I liked the size of the old X, and wish I could have retained that. But I didn't want to get left behind by not upgrading. I do miss root, mainly for a few xposed modules like gravitybox, Moto tether, and exchange bypass. But since I have my work phone I can tether in a pinch (not frequently needed at all).
There are sacrifices to all changes. For me, owning the non-rootable 2nd Gen X was worth the tradeoffs. I think you would be happy with the transition if you don't mind sacrificing root (I'm hopeful a method will be released!). I like the feel of it more than the S4 (physical handling, plus the coolness factor of designing it), the speed (S4 just feels more bulky and stutters quite a bit more), and the Moto features. I've found the radios (esp wifi) better on the X. I have the 32GB and haven't run into a problem yet. Though I can't fairly compare batteries since I use the two for very different purposes throughout my day.
Good luck!
Thanks to both of you. I ordered a 32gb last night as well as the Turbo Charger. Can't wait! Hope it comes in fast.
