[Q] Worth upgrading from original HTC Desire? - HTC Incredible S

Hi folks, I have the original amoled sim free HTC Desire and I'm wondering if it's worth replacing it with an Incredible S? To be fair I probably wouldn't be considering doing this if it wasn't for the current deal at CPW.
What do you think?

Definitely this phone rocks....
The newer gen chipset makes a huge diff imo.

Agreed..
I just traded my x10 for this recently lol
Best trade ever..
This phone is easily the best I've ever owned.

Does the IS need to make use of a2sd, or does it have enough app space as standard? Apologies but I don't know much about this phone.

It has a full 1.1gb of internal storage available to the user.
You can use apps2sd on any froyo or GB ROM for any phone so you can use that if you like. I haven't had to yet and I have a ton of apps.
Seriously, this phone is pure win

I also came from the desire amoled and now the IS. Sure worth it! The newer sense and the phone just runs a bit smoother.

I agree. There is plenty of internal storage that I haven't had to consider A2SD at all. I still have over 700MB free.

Brilliant, thanks for your replies. I've got got home with my new phone.

My phone shows that there's a system software update available, is it worth having? I'm on 2.3.3 now.
EDIT: Well that's odd, I've just checked again and now there isn't an update available! I must have been seeing things.

The moment I got my phone I rooted and soff lol

Hmmm, I have very poor phone signal here compared to the Desire. I've tried the GSM/WCDMA option too. Has anyone tried the 'foil' antenna boost trick?
Also just done a factory reset and I now have the 'software update available' message, installing it now.

What version were you on? What version is it after you installed the software update?

I don't have this at all, I actually find my signal pretty damn good. Might be because it is the canadian version of the inc s perhaps?

Software number is showing as 2.30.405.1, I don't know what is was on before.

I believe one of the things from the update you just installed was providing a better signal... I also did the foil thing when I was on froyo. Now I removed it and signal is doable.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using xda premium

My phone signal might well be showing a bit stronger than it was before the update, I'll give it a few days and see how I get on with it.
The foil antenna mod is interesting, but I wonder if it has any negative effects, aren't antennas usually a specific size/ratio?

The antennas on this are on the phone cover. Try cleaning them.

Well.. I use AT&T's 3G, as I live in the US. So, I had to "import" it from Canada. I already have a jailbroken iPhone 3G S. So, I really don't want another touch screen phone with the same form factor. The G1 has the physical keyboard and seems like it could make a pretty good back-up phone. Do you think it's pointless for me to keep this G1, even if I get the latest and smoothest ROM available???

The HTC Dream is the only phone with Android that I can think of that has support for AT&T's 3G network AND a physical keyboard. The BACKFLIP is coming out, but ... yeah, I'll pass on the whole MOTOBLUR OS. Also, what are my chances of bricking the phone? Seeing as I've never done this before and have no clue where to start.

I LOVE my touch now

I just thought I'd mention this even though its a little off topic, but I love my Touch now with 2.2 on it. It does absolutely everything I ever wanted a phone to do, the app market is full of awesome and useful apps, super stable, and my god, the battery life is out of this world. I only wish it had a glass capacitive screen to be a little more scratch resistant and finger friendly. I'd never get rid of it when my contract is up next March if it had that.
I wanted to give a shout out to all the devs and dedicated testers to put the Vogue back on the cutting edge.

Incubus RLS9. But not for any good reason really. It was just the last 2.2 I installed and called it perfect at that point. I've probably flashed my phone 30 times so I needed to find something that worked and stick with it before I wore out the NAND.
I'm considering buying a cheap used Touch to try this out instead of the phone I am using now on Sprint. How well does Android work on the Touch? Are there any downsides or things that don't work? What's the battery life like?
Thanks!

I am currently using a Palm Treo 755p so I am completely new to this. In terms of functionality, what is the difference between running it from the SD card and doing the NAND method. The SD install seemed pretty straightforward and the NAND version seemed more complicated. I am pretty tech savvy but have never installed a new OS on a mobile phone before. Can anyone provide a link to a simple straightforward instructions for installing via NAND? Also, which release should I be installing? I see people talking about more than one.
Thanks so much for your help!

Just a small thing, does SMS work as it should? I'm pretty much intending to make the Touch my No.1 phone, and SMS is a major factor. So, all apps work, including Wi-Fi? Impossible.

Personally, I would not upgrade to anything that has yet been announced as the dual core phones already hitting the market are soon to be leapfrogged by the quad-core Tegra & Qualcomm chips late this year / early next year.
The N1 is still an awesome device and still gets plenty of Google love as evident by the OTA to Gingerbread (though many were claiming abandonment due to the delay).

Well, whichever phone i'd choose i would certainly want one where all the letters on the keyboard work properly. It seems that the keyboard you are currently using is broken
The next Nexus Phone, so probably when Android Ice Cream Sandwich comes out. It should be a better improvement from the N1 to the next Nexus than it was going to the Nexus S.
Keep the N1 for now until a much better device arrives especially if your T-Mobile usa. Consider the Atrix if on At&t...
I would suggest the next Nexus

Its not a hacked Maps apk, but some changes to your system files that trick the system into thinking the N1 is a true multitouch device. You can either replace the files found in thread below or flash the zip in recovery depending on your comfort level.

The N1 has multitouch but doesn't do it well due to the crappy clearpad 2000 touch sensor used by HTC. The touch points will cross axis'. You will turn the map to the left and then it may turn right all of a sudden. Instead of enabling a half-assed map rotation, google disabled this feature on the N1. Personally, I have used this "hack" and had decent success YMMV.
If you do install this, remember to do it again after flashing different ROMS/Nightlies etc....

Buyer needs advice

Hi guys, I think there is quite an unbelievable offer for Austria Hutchinson users. Basically you get this phone for 69€ on a 20€ x 24 months contract. With the contract you get also 1000 minutes 1000 SMS and Internet unlimited so should be fine. Before I saw that I thought of sticking to my galaxy s for a while.
Now that said I would love to take it as long as the offer lasts, but I am concerned about 3 things:
a) i am a custom Rom user since 2 years. Never been on stock again. And I looooooove cyanogenmod! Do you think there will be custom roms for this?
b) the camera quality. While I'm not too much concerned about the video quality, I use my phone as a compact camera outside to take pictures. So how bad is it in your opinion? And do you think will it improve with upcoming updates?
c) you know something about the possibility of unlocking this phone?
I guess probably I'm asking too much but maybe someone knows better.
Thanks in advance!

We have root and CWM now, devs are working on CM10 and 4.0.4 Sense 4.1, so soon we'll have great ROMs
And i think we'll have unlocked bootloader soon too.
Hey guys,
This phone looks really cool. I was thinking of buying this phone. I want a phone that can get rooted and a lot of ROMs. Do u think Im in the right place?
I have read a lot of reviews and from what I can gather is that this phone is a tad better than the One X and a loses the battle just barely vs the GS3.
What do you guys think? What are the pros and cons of this phone?
Also which is better looking? The white or black model?
Thanks in advance guys!

You shall like the white one. Also, your favorite food is grilled chicken, and you'll only drink root beer. Also, move to Mumbai, which is your favorite city from now on. Any other totally personal decisions you can't make I'm happy to answer, too.
Hey thanks dude!
I was asking because I've never owned anything but Motorola Androids and they have locked bootloaders. Ive never seen this phone in person and the reviews online only show the white one, so I asked here for this awesome community's opinion...
Also I like grilled chicken but prefer steak. Hate root beer, and if I lived anywhere it would be 'MERICA. Ill be sure to visit Mumbai sometime though maybe we can have a beer together.

Personally, I chose the LG because it has exchangable battery and micro SD slot. They both have Tegra 3 and good displays, so it's no big difference hardware-wise. HTC has a large fanbase, so you'll have more custom roms on the HOX, plus the possibility to unlock your bootloader with HTCdev. LG might learn and do something similar, but as they're not open in saying what they do, no one can tell.
I was checking on eBay yesterday cuz I want a LG O4X and saw there was a developer version kinda like the Razr has one too... can anyone confirm this?

Hello all. What about temerature of subject's surface when it's CPU 100% loaded?

The Galaxy S5 Touchwiz is so bloated that you will need to custom ROM it.

http://m.androidcentral.com/galaxy-s5-rom-bit-monster-taking-nearly-8gb-storage
This is proof that you will need to custom ROM this phone if you want to regain all that internal space that was lost.
I think that Samsung software engineers need to slim things up on their Touchwiz.
Makes me wonder how large the Note 4 software is going to be.

If you are on Verizon or AT&T you can't do squat with it. Perhaps the GS4 is the way to go or something else. I guess March 25th is worth waiting for.
With Knox pre-installed, it won't be possible to customize it...

Couldn't care less about bloat if the batterylife is good. Already suffered badly with Nexus. Pathetic batterylife (putting it mildy). What's the use of less-bloat if the batterylife is so bad?
BTW, I consider G+ integration as the biggest bloat in Android.
This is no different from what's been done before by Samsung and other companies with their devices. Samsung at least gives external storage options still.
System uses 5.28GB.
So you'll have 10+ for the user.
As you can see from the screenshot it is loaded with trailers and demos.

Im with you. I love my nexus 5 to death, it's so fast and fluid. I even put purity and franco for the best battery/performance you can get from it. But still, battery life is not that good. I can get max 5 sot without playing games. And thats not enough. I cant have a peace of mind using a device that doesnt have a removable battery. But with my s4 and its battery kit, it's a pleasure to use. I can have 50% of juice left and have the battery kit 100% stand by waiting to be put. With this infinity battery life, i can have a peace of mind using my phone, even for playing emulators.

Check again the screenshot, it only have 5.28GB occupied by the OS, the rest is files the users put in there.
So you'll have 10.72GB available space.

Yeah until the carriers (well the ones here in the US at least) get their hands on it & add their useless bloatware on top of Touchwiz, which brings me to my 2nd rant - Samsung or any other OEM has no business even offering up 16gb models these days. The standard should be 32gb at least & especially since Google wants to kill SD card access.

I agree about the 16gb part, but at most carrier bloatware will add maybe 512mb-2014mb. Which the major carriers let you delete some of the crap you don't want no problem.
