[Q] flashing eng hboot to flash custom rom - HTC Incredible S

Hi guys.
Im new here and i cant find my answers from other treads and if my questions hv been answerd then im deeply sorry for my mistake guys. Im quite a nooby in this and this might be a silly questions. My incredible s is s-offed and rooted by Revolutionary and CWM ver 4.0.0.8
Here goes...
Does it a must or important to flash eng hboot to flash new rom?
Im using the stock hboot now.
Tempting to flash either Cyanogen 7 or Virtuous Unity with sense 3.0.
What are the requirements guys?
Does it OK if im using CWM 4.0.0.8?
Thanks in advance if anyone can assist.

A good way to find out what the requirements are for installing a particular ROM is to read the instructions in that ROM's thread.

If you are S-Off with Revolutionary there is no need to flash the Eng HBoot because the Revo HBoot gives you the same functionality.
Here is a simply thing to remember. You flash custom Roms using a custom recovery such as ClockworkMod. You flash official HTC Roms using HBoot.

Ok. Im goin to do that. Thanks.

Ok. I wonder how im going to flash the official rom in hboot because ive backed it up using the rom manager. Is flashing from hboot, the file has to be an IMG.zip file? Sorry tpbklake, im a total noob.

Yes, any flashable file from HBOOT needs to be named PG32IMG.zip. You wouldn't use it to flash a backup made with ROM Manager, you would use ClockworkMod to do that.
In the Development section there is a thread that contains all of the official HTC RUU/ROM files for the Incredible S. When you manually extract the ROM.zip file the RUU, this is the file you would rename to PG32IMG.zip and use HBOOT to install.
So again, for the custom ROMs, the requirements are usually spelled out in the original post and you would use ClockworkMod to flash and install those.

Ok. Its clear for me about this now. Thanks a lots. A new thing ive learned from u and i will continue learning and researching. Thanks again guys.

New Owner, Rooting Questions

Hello,
I just received my Incredible S yesterday, and after some searching around, I've finally found the guide to root it on this forum.
I'm going to use the guide, but as a new rooter (only rooted an HTC Desire), I have a few questions regarding this specific phone.
My phone is currently s-on, and I'm going to follow the guide to get to s-off mode. However, does it matter that I'm only running 2.2.1? Am I still able to root?
Also, when does s-on get activated again? Only wen I go back to a retail ROM?
And, this is a total noob question...Am I able to use the Recovery ROM on one memory card (an 8GB), go through the root process and then switch to a 16GB card to install a custom ROM?
Thanks.
1. alpharevx works for both Gingerbread (2.3) and Froyo (2.2)
2. If you flash an official ROM (you can find them in a collection thread somewhere here on xda) you'll go back to S-ON.
3. After you've "installed" the custom recovery, it doesn't matter how many times you change SD-card; the custom recovery will still be there since you flash it over the original recovery.
Short answer; Yes, you can use a different SD-card to install a custom ROM from!
OK, just found this information in the ROM that I want to use...
HTC Incredible S S-OFF
Radio S-OFF in order to flash new radio
ClockworkMod Recovery with EXT4 support from here
Does using AlphaRevX put the radio into s-off mode?

I've been searching the forums, but I can't find anything about that...
I'd like to know how to find out if your radio is S-OFF or S-ON. Or is radio S-OFF the same as HBoot S-OFF (which you get by using alpharevx)?
Sometimes I have to say it's a bit hard to find info about some things for he IncS
alpharevx s-off is sufficient...you don't have to do a special radio s-off..I'm already running Android Revolution HD 1.1.0
edit: even I didn't find anything specific about radio s-off

Me neither, that's why I'm starting to get confused about the "what you need" part of ARHD forum topic...
And since it works for you, I guess what he means with "Radio S-OFF" is that you should flash that radio he recommends to use with his ROM, or does he know something that no one else on this forum knows?
Yes, I think that's what he means unless ofcourse he has some secrets
hey, i am new to this all this root and stuff...
just few question.
so, the s-ff in hdboot mean the phone is rootable?
and the Radio S-OFF means i can use any carrier I chose?
thank you :]

[Q] Radio s-off for idiots (like me)

How do I get radio s-off so I can install another radio. I'm not a complete idiot (as the topic says), but I'm having trouble understanding these "adb" commands, where to typ them in, and if I need some program on my computers.
So I would appreciate an idiots guide to s-off
You don't necessarily need radio S-OFF to flash a different radio. If you have HBOOT S-OFF you can flash a new radio in the bootloader.
Hello,
As said above you don't need radio soff. I think to be able to flash you need only boot soff.
If you have a stock rom you can gain soff using alpharevx (see dev section).
For windows the useful software is:
- htc sync (from HTC site) for the correct usb drivers;
- Android sdk (google)
- I don't know if eclipse is a req or not (i've installed)
- fastboot (google)
The "famigerate" adb is in the Android sdk.
For tutorial, there are a lot in the dev section.

actually - no. AlphaRev HBOOT cannot flash radio.
I managed to update my radio in the AlphaRevX HBOOT screen by booting into it with the new radio (named as PG32IMG.zip) in the root folder.
It does seem, however, that you can't flash a radio like this on some newer phones (at least that's what the word on the forums is telling me), so maybe my way doesn't work for everyone. Guess ENG HBOOT might be the only way for some people after all, but my phone didn't need it.
So can someone actually confirm, can we flash Android Revolution with Alpharevx S OFF In his post it says the radio needs to be S OFF, which is different to Alpharevx S OFF, and reading other posts who only have Alpharevx S OFF when they have flashed AR ROM they are experiencing problems during calls, so they then have to install eng hboot which, in itself, seems to cause problems also. Have i lost u yet
Android Revolution post says:
"HTC Incredible S S-OFF

jaysonline says:
"alpharevx s-off is sufficient...you don't have to do a special radio s-off..I'm already running Android Revolution HD 1.1.0

Can someone please finalise...maybe someone has flashed AR using just Alpharevx S OFF and all is ok.
Cheers.
btw, watching Terminator 2....what a film...even after at least 100 watches
You don't need radio S-OFF to flash a ROM, so yes, you can flash ARHD with only the HBOOT S-OFF and root. The only thing you may not be able to flash is a radio, but that depends on the individual phone, as I mentioned in the post above.

Yes, exactly my experience. Two UK Inc S's, both s-off'd with XTC clip, one flashed radio no problem, the other newer one would not flash radio til ENG hboot installed.
I have flashed new radio with HBOOT S-OFF. I tried to install ENG hboot but had some problems. Just installed adb and followed instructions from Android Revolution HD 1.1.1 post. Maybe i'm lucky

Yeah, though the ROM should still be functional with a different radio at least.

Think I'm gonna stick with the stock ROM. Quite happy with it really, sooooo much better than my Samsung Omnia HD i had before in every way....it actually does what it says it can do without having to implement a **** load of workarounds! All I would be interested in if i flashed a new ROM is better battery performance, and they cant necessarily guarantee this. Think Ill try this out first for battery performance:

[Guide] Upgrad old hboot revolutonary s-off to new hboot 2.00.0000 s-off

HOWTO Upgrad old hboot s-off to new hboot 2.00.0000 s-off (7.00.1000 upgraded to be installed on revolutonary s-off 6.xxxxx)
1. download to your sd-card this file xttp://rghost.ru/34060371
2. Then reboot into bootloader - phone will install PG32IMG.zip by itself
3. Now you can install the stock firmware 3.08.405.3 (RUU or OTA), s-off
for downgrade use old eng s-off xttp://rghost.ru/34168821
or
use adb:
adb devices
adb shell
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 of=/sdcard/backup.img
dd if=/sdcard/hboot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
reboot bootloader
You can flash any hboot
Any references? I want to know how it works.

Yes these are vary obvious noob questions and the answers to both of these can be found in this forum by using the search functionality. Flashing CWM or EXT4 is the whole basis for customizing your IncS, so my suggestion to you is search, read and research to learn how to do.
is there and what is the advantage of updating old HBOOT (S-OFF) to new HBOOT (S-OFF)
You should flash the hboot back to ENG S-off if you want to go back to S-ON
For me it worked... thanks
I have updated the phone with the last firmware revision.
Now I have android 2.3.5 and sense 3.0.
Of course, hbtoot 2.0x too and the phone is s-on.
Now, what I have to do for Root my phone (set s-off and install clockwork mod)?

You won't be able to gain true S-OFF (as shown on the HBOOT screen), but you can unlock the bootloader by using the procedure at HTCDEV.com and then you can install ClockworkMod recovery and flash su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip to root the ROM.
FreeWolF80, you can unlock the bootloader, downgrade to old hboot, s-off revolutionary and upgrade to 3.08.405.3
Superuser: http://goo-inside.me/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip
Clockworkmod: http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-vivo.img
P.S. The clockworkmod for above ^^, must flash through fastboot.

I'm running VIVO PVT SHIP S-OFF RL HBOOT-6.13.1002 (dated 1 april 2011) with rom ARHD 2.1.1, for what reasons should I upgrade to HBOOT-7.00.1000 (dated 1 november 2011)?
Are there advantages, like it will be possible easier to go back S-ON for warranty reasons?
Inferi0r , this hboot for stock 3.08.405.3
So we have only an advantage if we are still on one of the newest stock roms?
I'm curious to know too, following on from Inferi0r's question. If I'm running a custom ROM already, does this mean there's no benefit with a newer HBOOT?

@Knightrocker: let me know if the flash was succesfull. I can´t get rid of the modified hboot. I´ve tried to flash different hboots even via fastboot but did not succeed. Using fastboot it says that hboot flash is bypassed and does nothing. Also PG32IMG.zip tries failed by me.
If you succeed please share the PG32IMG.zip file with me. Thanks

HTC Incredible S 2.3.5 most easiest root

Hello, Iam noob in rooting and there is sooo much information about that, so my head goes burn, my simple question is only - can you recommend me the most easiest way to root my Incredible S? I want to install new ROM. Version Hboot 2.00, android 2.3.5 and never S-OFF, rooted. I have to downgrade HBOOT? Thank you so much
Oh look it's first sticky on the forum! Just a simple read through the first page of the forum might help just sayin'.
Anyways, this seems to be the easiest way to root...it's definitely easy to understand even if you have few to minimum understanding of rooting and flashing.

Since you are already S-OFF, then you should be able to flash ClockworkMod recovery in FASTBOOT USB mode. Once you have CWM installed, you can make a 'nandroid' backup of your current ROM, apps and settings. Then you can flash the latest and greatest version of su-3.0.x.zip to gain root.
This will leave your current ROM, apps and settings intact.

Since you have permanent S-OFF, you don't have to worry about whether to unlock HBOOT 2.00.0000 or downgrading to run Revolutionary, etc.
You should be able to flash ClockworkMod recovery, you could flash HBOOT 1.13, flash a new radio, etc.
You just need to get familiar with using FASTBOOT USB mode and all of the options that fastboot.exe can do.
I am speaking from experience. I have a permanent S-OFF IncS and even after I run the Android 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 RUU and it upgraded my HBOOT to version 2.00.0000, I was able to flash ClockworkMod recovery and install su-3.0.x.zip and root the ROM. I have also since reflashed back to HBOOT 1.13.

With HBOOT 1.13, ClockworkMod recovery is able to flash a custom ROM in one step. With HBOOT 2.00.0000, after you flash a custom ROM in ClockworkMod, you manually have to extract and flash the boot.img file in the custom ROM's zip file. In other words it is easier to flash custom ROM's with CWM and HBOOT 1.13 than it is with HBOOT 2.00

The only option you have right now for ICS is to run a custom ROM from the Development section and all of those are already rooted.
If you are talking about the official ICS OTA/ROM from HTC, we will have to wait and see if it will be rootable or not.
Once again since you have a permanent S-OFF on your phone, you shouldn't have to worry about. If you install the official ICS ROM and you lose root, you should be able to reflash CWM and then install su-3.0.x.zip to gain root.

No a stupid question because the answer isn't very obvious, but the is a sticky post in the General forum that describes a process where you can downgrade the ROM and HBOOT to a version that Revolutionary does support.

OK, first of all if you use the HTCDEV unlock method, you HBOOT screen will only show UNLOCKED, but it still shows S-ON, so you never really have true S-OFF with the HTCDEV method. The unlocked bootloader will allow you to flash custom images, such as boot.img, recovery.img, system.img, etc. but not radios like a true S-OFF bootloader does.
So the key is does your HBOOT screen still show UNLOCKED at the top? If so, then you can still boot into CWM recovery and flash another ROM.
And also it would be great if you used regular font sizes and colors...
since that was your first post, the heavens forgive you
but i need to look away cos my eyes hurt
