Hello, Iam noob in rooting and there is sooo much information about that, so my head goes burn, my simple question is only - can you recommend me the most easiest way to root my Incredible S? I want to install new ROM. Version Hboot 2.00, android 2.3.5 and never S-OFF, rooted. I have to downgrade HBOOT? Thank you so much
Oh look it's first sticky on the forum! Just a simple read through the first page of the forum might help just sayin'.
Anyways, this seems to be the easiest way to root...it's definitely easy to understand even if you have few to minimum understanding of rooting and flashing.

Since you are already S-OFF, then you should be able to flash ClockworkMod recovery in FASTBOOT USB mode. Once you have CWM installed, you can make a 'nandroid' backup of your current ROM, apps and settings. Then you can flash the latest and greatest version of su-3.0.x.zip to gain root.
This will leave your current ROM, apps and settings intact.

Since you have permanent S-OFF, you don't have to worry about whether to unlock HBOOT 2.00.0000 or downgrading to run Revolutionary, etc.
You should be able to flash ClockworkMod recovery, you could flash HBOOT 1.13, flash a new radio, etc.
You just need to get familiar with using FASTBOOT USB mode and all of the options that fastboot.exe can do.
I am speaking from experience. I have a permanent S-OFF IncS and even after I run the Android 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 RUU and it upgraded my HBOOT to version 2.00.0000, I was able to flash ClockworkMod recovery and install su-3.0.x.zip and root the ROM. I have also since reflashed back to HBOOT 1.13.

With HBOOT 1.13, ClockworkMod recovery is able to flash a custom ROM in one step. With HBOOT 2.00.0000, after you flash a custom ROM in ClockworkMod, you manually have to extract and flash the boot.img file in the custom ROM's zip file. In other words it is easier to flash custom ROM's with CWM and HBOOT 1.13 than it is with HBOOT 2.00

The only option you have right now for ICS is to run a custom ROM from the Development section and all of those are already rooted.
If you are talking about the official ICS OTA/ROM from HTC, we will have to wait and see if it will be rootable or not.
Once again since you have a permanent S-OFF on your phone, you shouldn't have to worry about. If you install the official ICS ROM and you lose root, you should be able to reflash CWM and then install su-3.0.x.zip to gain root.

Stupid question, how did you achieve s-off with hboot:2.0000? As I understand, Revolutionary doesn't yet support hboot:2.0000?

No a stupid question because the answer isn't very obvious, but the is a sticky post in the General forum that describes a process where you can downgrade the ROM and HBOOT to a version that Revolutionary does support.

Hello,
I just received my Incredible S yesterday, and after some searching around, I've finally found the guide to root it on this forum.
I'm going to use the guide, but as a new rooter (only rooted an HTC Desire), I have a few questions regarding this specific phone.
My phone is currently s-on, and I'm going to follow the guide to get to s-off mode. However, does it matter that I'm only running 2.2.1? Am I still able to root?
Also, when does s-on get activated again? Only wen I go back to a retail ROM?
And, this is a total noob question...Am I able to use the Recovery ROM on one memory card (an 8GB), go through the root process and then switch to a 16GB card to install a custom ROM?
Thanks.
1. alpharevx works for both Gingerbread (2.3) and Froyo (2.2)
2. If you flash an official ROM (you can find them in a collection thread somewhere here on xda) you'll go back to S-ON.
3. After you've "installed" the custom recovery, it doesn't matter how many times you change SD-card; the custom recovery will still be there since you flash it over the original recovery.
Short answer; Yes, you can use a different SD-card to install a custom ROM from!
OK, just found this information in the ROM that I want to use...
HTC Incredible S S-OFF
Radio S-OFF in order to flash new radio
ClockworkMod Recovery with EXT4 support from here
Does using AlphaRevX put the radio into s-off mode?

I've been searching the forums, but I can't find anything about that...
I'd like to know how to find out if your radio is S-OFF or S-ON. Or is radio S-OFF the same as HBoot S-OFF (which you get by using alpharevx)?
Sometimes I have to say it's a bit hard to find info about some things for he IncS
alpharevx s-off is sufficient...you don't have to do a special radio s-off..I'm already running Android Revolution HD 1.1.0
edit: even I didn't find anything specific about radio s-off

Me neither, that's why I'm starting to get confused about the "what you need" part of ARHD forum topic...
And since it works for you, I guess what he means with "Radio S-OFF" is that you should flash that radio he recommends to use with his ROM, or does he know something that no one else on this forum knows?
Yes, I think that's what he means unless ofcourse he has some secrets
hey, i am new to this all this root and stuff...

so, the s-ff in hdboot mean the phone is rootable?
and the Radio S-OFF means i can use any carrier I chose?

If you end up installing Nik's ROM , then you will not get OTA updates. If you are looking to not void your warranty, then downgrading your hboot and using Revolutionary is the safer of your 2 options. If you use HTCDEV.com to unlock your bootloader, HTC will know that you have modded your phone and in fact you must acknowledge to them that you are modding your phone.
With Revolutionary S-OFF as long as your phone is operational and you can get into HBOOT, then you could return to stock for warranty purposes.

No on the OTA because during the downgrade process you will be installing an older RUU/ROM and you will end up with a phone that has a custom HBOOT image and a custom Recovery image, so you won't be able to take the ICS OTA.

Yes, you can unlock your HBOOT using the procedure at HTCDEV.com and then you can install CWM and root the ROM, but it will void your warranty.

Once the update is out we will have full working custom roms (I think we already do, sense 3.5 or 3.6, not too sure??) so no need to stress about the ota
Or wait for update, root phone and make a nandroid backup. You will then have a copy of your ota update.

How did you root and S-OFF? Did you use Revolutionary?
If so, then no you won't be able to run and install an official HTC release, but there are plenty of custom ROMs in the Development section.
Yes I used revolutionary.
I'm looking for a flat ROM like original because each modded rom add some features and tweaks so is far from original and contain bugs or unwanted features.
If you want to brick your phone you can install it.
The best rom install is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756500
this link takes you to the rom, its the offical RUU.
It still allows you to still install other ROMs if you ever choose to.

Original poster, did you get this to work ?
I am trying to downgrade from 2.02.0002 and get the following when running the RUU process:-
"THE ROM UPDATE UTILITY CANNOT UPDATE YOUR ANDROID PHONE"
"PLEASE GET THE CORRECT ROM UPDATE UTILITY AND TRY AGAIN"
I notice you are on 2.02.0002 the same, but the link to 'All in One Noob Guide For Downgrade and S Off' actually says 2.00 and not 2.02.
Just wondering if you got the same issue as me and the poster who mentioned the link didnt see you said 2.02.
Thanks

I was working with a user this week that was trying to use the script to downgrade HBOOT 2.02.0002 and it appears that the tacoroot exploit to get temp root does not work on HBOOT 2.02.0002, so the script is unable to run misc_version to change the mainver value to 2.00.0000, so therefore it will not work at the moment for a stock, unrooted phone.
You would have to resort to unlocking the bootloader at HTCDEV.com, install a custom recovery and then root the ROM in order to use the downgrade and gain S-OFF.

If you have HBOOT 2.02.0002 and you unlock using HTCDEV.com you will be able to:
1. Flash a custom recovery.
2. Once you have a custom recovery you will be able to:
A. Root your current ROM by installing SU-3.1.3.zip
B. Flash a custom, rooted ROM.
So I believe that should answer your questions. You may now exit the maze.

S-ON/S-OFF is used to reference the Security flag setting in the phone. If you have Security Off, then you can flash almost everything to your phone, including a new radio.
With an unlocked bootloader like you have, you can flash some of the same items as S-OFF with the 2 biggest exceptions being:
1. You cannot flash a new radio.
2. The boot partition is not mounted as R/W when in Recovery mode, thus the reason you manually have to flash the boot.img while in FASTBOOT USB mode.
Hey guys I am very new to this stuff and I just got 3 small quick questions.
I want to flash to a stock version of ICS specifially this one "RUU_VIVO_ICS_35_S_TWM_TW_4.10.921.1_Radio_20.74.30.0833U_3831.18.00.11_M_release_266252_signed"
As of now I am S-off and I have CW recovery boot and I am rooted
The Current rom I have is Ice Cold Sandwich "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508435"
My Questions are:
1.) What will I lose? aside from the obvious data root etc..Will I lose my CW recovery booter? and S-Off?
2.) Is this worth it ? I mean how different is Icecold from the real ICS
3.) Is there a way so I dont lose root and the option to boot into recovery?
Thanks alot and sorry for the noob questions !!:good:

If you are S-OFF by using the Revolutionary.io procedure and your HBOOT is versoin 6.13.1000 then you will not be able to successfully flash the ICS RUU. The Revolutionary HBOOT is designed to prevent itself from being overwritten and causing you to lose S-OFF.
In the Development section there are 2 ICS ROMs that are pre-rooted and built from the official ICS RUUs. One is built from the 4.10.405.1 WWE RUU and the other is built from the 4.10.707.1 RUU. Both can be flashed from CWM recovery and will not cause you to lose S-OFF. Both of these ROMs will require you to upgrade your S-OFF HBOOT from Revolutionary to BlackRose 2.02.0002.
Another option which will work prefectly with your current setup is mike1986's ARHD 3.01. This ROM is also built from the 4.10.405.1 WWE RUU but mike has updated the ROM with the latest versions of the apps.
So in summary, if you are S-OFF with Revolutionary and CWM then stay away from the official ICS RUU and stick with the custom ROMs.
