Hello everyone, Do you know which is the best way to root android 2.3.4 on my Captivate. Do you have any experience about this. Help me please!!!!!!!!!!!
See here... FuguRoot Mod
I know the thread is titled for i897uckf1, but don't fret that, because this root method works for 2.3.4 i897uckh3 as well.
Look behind the attachment paperclip at the Title of the thread and u will find the "stockKH3zImage.tar" that is the original stock i897uckh3 kernel that u will need to Odin back after u Odin the zImage-root.tar to get rooted. This is a very easy method of getting root.
Thank you. And I need to know do I have to odin back to the stock?

By the way, I can not find out the files that you mentioned (i897uckh3). the file also names i897uckf1, is it ok if I flash this kernel on my phone? because my stock is i897uckh3
I have a problem that I can't not odin my stock kernel, so, can you make me a TAR file that flash able with odin, this my original kernel

If u r on stock i897uckh3, the leaked gingerbread 2.3.4, then all u have to do to get root is Odin the zImage-root.tar that is attached to the FuguRoot thread (click on the paperclip at the title of the thread...u have to back out to where u see all the titles to the threads in the development section and then u will see the paperclip that i am talkin about). Once u Odin that tar (the phone won't boot up all the way after u odin the root kernel. It may boot loop so-> ), then pull ur battery, replace, use button combo to get into download mode again and then Odin back the stock kh3 original kernel that is attached behind the paperclip. After this u have successfully obtained root.
Everything is there in that thread that u need to get root.

Thank you very much but I found another method to do, I will post on this site when i am free. you are the best
I can enter download mode, using a jig or adb reboot download, but once I do that Odin loses the connection to the phone; it doesn't get re-added.
I'm trying to root KH3, which I flashed using UCKH3 Heimdall-One-Click [beta], but I'm not sure flashed bootloaders? The phone is working fine (calls, SMS, 3G, WiFi, etc.).
Any tips?

i had sgs i 9000 version
android 2.3.3
jvk version
then i just rooted it using odin.fine.
use speedmod kernel for gingerbrid works firne.
then when i tried to go to that rooted stock kernel made by chainfire it rebbot then
here is story..
samsung boot scree looping again again.
i can enter in recovery mode and download mode,
tried nandroid restore but same happen.
plz help what to do to make it alive.
i know its not bricked bit i didnt worked either?//
Get into download mode and re-flash a stock 2.3.3 or a 2.3.4 rom with Odin and it should help fix the boot looping.
any stock firmware .i just downloaded this from forst link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1011901
will it work?
NO ONE??/my * is burning.i got very sow internet,
Yes any of those in that thread, Froyo or Gingerbread should get you sorted out.
i mean first one 2.3.4 jvq veersion in the given link bddy.is it okay?
should i tick re partion in odin or not with this 2.3.4 jvq version?
JVQ is fine.
If it's a 3 part firmware (separate phone, pda, csc), then 515 pit is required with repartition ticked.
hey thefirmware i download is just .exe file.one file what to do
Uploaded it for you.
Just unzip it then add it to Odin.
Double click it as it has to extract, which then will give you 3 files.

Awesome, glad I could help
If I upload custom kernel on my Galaxy S with 2.3.4 JVQ, is it possible to revert to original JVQ kernel in order to check if same issue will appear on original kernel to detect if custom kernel has bug?
Thanks.
Flash as pda with odin.

To get just the stock kernel in a flashable state you need to extract the zImage file from stock ROM (either one file or PDA of 3-file), then put it in a tar file by itself. Then you flash that as PDA with Odin.
I'm just going to expand a bit.
Find a single file tar of the stock firmware that is meant to be flashed as a PDA. Use winrar to look inside the .tar file to get the zImage and put it in a tar by itself. You can then flash it as PDA in Odin.

I thought that it is proper way to extract zImage from original ROM but I wasn't sure that it is good way. Thanks, I will try in this way.
I created zImage.TAR with 7-zip but Odin cannot load it. It comes to step when zImage should be loaded but upload is not happening. Do I have to exec some certain parameters when zipping it in TAR with 7-zip or how can I do it?
EDIT: I managed to make proper (flashable) TAR with IZarc application. Nevertheless, I uploaded stock zImage but I still have root access although other mooded kernel specific applications are gone. So, basically, I didn't revert it to original state. Or I am wrong? Please, advise.
Thanks.
Rooting doesn't necessarily mean changing kernel. You can root a completely stock phone and still use stock kernel. You can also unroot the phone.
You can use the SGS kernel flasher free app to flash a zImage directly from the phone.

He's right, root often stays behind. To get back to stock just do a factory reset.
Make sure you can get into download mode before flashing just in case.

I've read through many threads, but in most they discribe to root a phone via flashing the kernel
like here.
and i also would like to have a backup of my stock kernel, if i would flash it, but i'm not sure from which version i should take it. i do have JVH, but i can't find a fitting csc (it's MOBJV2) on samfirmware or google.
so my dilemma is as follows.. i was running continuum 4.1 on my captivate. i decided i wanted to try one of the new gingerbread roms, so my first step was to use odinoneclick 1.0 to get to complete stock and go from there. my luck, odin froze on me at sbl.bin... so i am soft bricked but i can use the vol up/down plug usb method to get to download mode. because i have only used one click before, and not a full odin like 1.7, i am having trouble figuring out exactly what i need, and what steps are necessary to safely get me back to stock using odin 1.7 so i can then load GB bootloaders and stop messing with BL's from now on.. so i suppose my main question is should i first flash eclair before trying to flash GB bootloaders/rom? my other question being, if so, what files do i need, and do i need to place a pit file and repartition? sorry if this is a noob question, i just dont want to screw it up any further and wasnt sure if specific steps must be taken when you are soft bricked.. thanks very much in advance!
No need to flash Eclair. Just flash the KF1 file in this post and then XCal's reorient for GB and you'll be good to go. Just don't boot into the OS after flashing XCal's kernel else you'll get bootloops since it was designed for I9000 based ROMs rather then I897. Just reboot back into recovery after flashign XCal's Kernel and then flash whatever GB ROM you want.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1126704
I personally prefer to flash my phone using Heimdall on my laptop running Kubuntu as it's generally more stable/successful, and it's easier to choose which files you want to flash if you only want to flash specific files (Like the bootloaders).
Also KH3 is out and it looks like it might have updated bootloaders, but it's not a full ROM from what I was able to grab. It's missing the param.lfs, dbdata.rfs, and the pit file. Also has an added SS_DL.dll which I'm not sure what the purpose of that file is since it's a Windows file...

im getting a big red FAIL on every attempt at flashing KF1 file with odin 1.3 and 1.7 im not sure which route to take at this point. do i need to flash the pit file with the bootloaders?

Use Odin with Fugu, wait for red fish, then reflash the original UCKH3 kernel. Put the root.tar in the pda slot and click start then put the original.tar in the pda slot and click start.

Yes, flash over the stock KH3.
Root method:
1. Extract and open Odin3 v1.81.zip and place the zImage-root.tar file in the pda slot.
2. Connect your phone to your PC.
3. Put your phone into download mode (Same as eclair/froyo 3-button combo or adb reboot download)
4. Phone will boot and show the fugu fish.
5. Power off and put your phone into download mode.
6. Place the zImage-original.tar file in the pda slot and hit start. Phone will reboot.
7. You are now rooted with Stock 2.3.4 Gingerbread.

You aren't flashing over it. Just flashing a kernel. You can use Odin OR heimdall. Just follow the intructions and remember to use the KH3 with cwm i linked

There's a guide in the Dev section (stickied).. a little reading goes a long way!
Basically it's gonna look like this: Stock KK4 w/o BLs with Odin -> Corn kernel with Odin 1.85 (go in recovery to get root) -> Flash custom ROM as per their instructions -> Enjoy!
So yeah, little rundown but you have some reading to do to make sure you understand what you are doing.
Since u r runnin android 2.3.4 then u have gb bootloaders so u r good concerning that.
Simply Odin flash the .tar packaged KK4 Corn Kernel version 7.0A , afterwards reboot into the cwm recovery and install ur rom of choice that u should have copied to ur internal sdcard by now, per said rom's install instructions. (u will have to select to install it twice) Success.
--- Option is there, in the advanced cwm recovery menu, to gain Root access. But the big unrealized fact to a lot of users is that u actually don't need to have Root in order to flash a Developer's Rom. If u follow the method i just laid out.---
Enjoy ur Rom of choice !

Hold volume + & - together with power button until u see the at&t logo, then release and u should be in recovery.

I'd say to retry flashing Corn kernel with Odin 1.85 (don't forget the .pit)
If that doesn't work, flash stock KK4 without BLs, then reflash Corn kernel with Odin 1.85.

The .pit file.
When you use Odin 1.85, you need 2 files to flash a kernel: .tar and .pit
Your flash most likely didn't work cause you didn't have the .pit file (hence why I said a little reading goes a long way).
It can either be found in here (little search) or on the samsung website.
EDIT: here it is: http://www.droidevelopers.com/attac...752561-[download]-ops-pit-files-s1je4.pit.rar
If you don't know how to use Odin, there are plenty of videos on youtube. Please take time to really understand what you're doing otherwise you'll end up with a paperweight in your hands.

No, when using Odin 1.85, you put the .tar file in the PDA and the .pit file in the PIT.
Flashing Corn kernel will give you a cwm recovery and you won't need to root, just flash the ROM you want to as per their instructions.
