Since windows 8 will work on pretty much every hardware, is it possible that we will see a windows 8 port for our galaxy tabs? ;D
The developer preview doesn't support ARM. so not anytime soon.
Hold on.
One of Microsoft's official statements about Windows8 development a while ago, was that it would fully support ARM cpu's as i recall.
And as the official preview shows. IT is fully designed for a Tablet (and or) multi-touch device.
well i saw the conference and they said it's Intel processor I5 on Samsung Tab with 4 Gig of ram and 64 Gig of memory .....
oh well, then I guess not until the final release
Don't kid yourself... If anything they'll drop developement for the older devices as there are more and more of the newer ones coming out.... Why support such old tech if its dated? Its more profitable to concentrate finding and killing any problems with the newer devices then supporting devices that, as far as they are concerned, are at the end of their life....
Windows is over
i wanted to really post this, but you had the balls to post it lol.. i downloaded windows 8 dev build a bit ago.... i wish i could install it on my galaxy tab...
No guarantees on support continuing, but I remember reading a Microsoft statement saying that ARM architectures would be supported and there was a mention of Microsoft supporting the ARMv8-based devices at least. It will probably take a hell of a lot of work to make it work properly on the Tab, but once the final Win8 builds hit with ARM support, it *should* theoretically be possible.
always wondered about windows
i for one always wondered if it would be possibile to install windows on our device..
like the iconia w500 dualboot or something.. that would be toooo good....

wtf has this got to do with Android development, and why post a question in this forum when there is a blatantly obvious forum specifically created for QUESTIONS???
The amount of these posts is getting f***ing ridiculous, how hard is it to use use some common sense and take 5 seconds to look where you are posting.
From the forum sticky.....

it does. i've done that and it works like a champ. i have tested with 2 device here where by 1 of it is Acer Iconia W500 which works great.
i also tested on machine with spec like dual core ULV 1.2 processor, 1GB RAM and a 5200rpm machine. it works better than windows 7 with some minor tuning.
Windows 8 has been confirmed to run on ARM chips for months now (I believe there were Qualcomm reference devices at BUILD.) however as stated above the Tab 7" is almost a year old now which is ancient in terms of mobile hardware. So if there's a dev that is willing to undertake the project then it is theoretically possible (although there's no minimum system specs yet so we'll see if the Tab's hardware is even capable of running it). Additionally the radios used in our devices may not be supported in Windows 8 simply because they're outdated by now and the device is designed for Android so Microsoft may not bother to build in such compatibility. This means possibly no Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, etc.

Android? Fix the compatibility between the hardware vendors first.

ultraprime: I've been following the progress as closely as possible. Can't wait to see Android on my Tilt. So far, a dev on the Android Google Group has managed to dump the filesystem: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/thread/277a73b32a02f26a?hl=en . Great, but my Tilt is not already running Linux.
I imagine it won't be long now! Do you have experience with Linux on HTC Devices? It's something I've been reading about but haven't taken the leap yet.

You need a running linux kernel on the wizard first. The main roadblock
is the CPLD register access over i2c.
Here's a recent android presentation video:

Nice!
Discussing android porting now is IMHO completely pointless at the moment... It does not exist yet...
Maybe this time next year...

it may be pointless but good idea to talk about.

Android would be great! What are the plans?
Hi,
I think this would be a good project, and in fact it might be helpful for supporting and advertising the new platform if Android could be used on already existing phones as well. I would definitely install Android on my Wizard rather than staying with Windows Mobile (even though TNT/its right provides great WM builds).
Are there any plans to port Android on existing HTC phones? I am sure that the Wizard is fast enough. Actually, from the technical side there was not much progress since then. Even in 2007 HTC and others presented phones with TI OMAP chip running on 200 MHz, which is sufficient. And the display resolution is stuck to 320x240, unfortunately. In fact, I plan to stay with my Wizard until I can get a phone that replaces my Notebook! Therefore, Android would be welcome meanwhile ...
What are your thoughts?
Eriol
Hi!
I have an HTC trinity since a year now and I've been waiting for a linux port since then.... I swear, if I was a coder I would start a project yesterday... but I'm just a sysadmin and the only code i can piss is script.
Windows mobile is an insult to such a nice device (flashing to WM6 is nearly useless.... and sometimes worst) so to me it would be great to just have a better OS on it.
To be straight, when I bought it I was certain that someone would have been able to port Linux to it so Android....would be perfect.
Of course i'll be happy to help in any way if someone sees a role for my "resources" :-D
the screenshot posted are ugly but the presentation of android that i saw on youtube are beautiful. its got all those iphone kind of transition effects and its a O.S so it would be great . In windows the emulators provide transition effects and finally reveals the traditional windows os.
News update:

I have a working kernel + Android combo
but as of now, it's pretty much useless..can't really interact with it.
Will post a guide/ howto if anyone needs it.
kudos to the guys on #linwizard!
Maybe we should keep stuff from linwizard were?
Just asking whats the status of getting android on the wizard??
( unfortunatly im a non coder so cant realy help in setting it up but i would help in testing it)
But one thing im really intrested in is getting linux running on the wizard tht would be awesome but unfortunatly the linwizard project seems to have slowed down considerably.Anyway cheers to the developers so far and heres hoping a breakthru comes soon.

Now we need is the phone working (RIL driver compatible with Wizard). I've done some experiments with android's SDK, if this thing gets to work properly, that would be great! (I was working on a online backup system for your contacts, events, etc).
Excellent man , excellent. So hopefully we wont have much longer to wait.
Updates?
Gentlemen (and Ladies, if appropriate),
Can you give us an update on your progress getting Android running on the Wizard? I am eagerly looking forward to the experience and check here regularly.
Thank you for sharing your work.
Ea mobile has said that they will release an android version of the sims 3. I have checked their website but there is no mention of the game. There is a video floating around the web showing an ea mobile representative talking about the game.
Now i do a basic google search on g1 the sims 3 and i find this website.
http://store.handmark.com/p/124778/Android/The-Sims-3-for-Android/HTC-G1
Is this possible or are they just trying to pull a fast one?
I bet they did
I saw it too. It has the same screenshots for WM smartphones. I guess they did a quick java port of the game and are expecting people to pat 8$ for this ****. Gameloft are doing the same thing. Let's face it - with only 2 phones on the market and not - so - big market share, android phones won't get much attention by the big game developers. I'm glad I got my G1 only 2 months ago, I think there will be more an more interesting games coming in the near future.
for big games companies, android is just seen as another crappy j2me phone, unfortunately... let's hope easy native development will soon be possible (and better market share should help too)
Sims 3 on the g1? I doubt it. Have you seen the requirements for it running on a desktop? Lol my laptop, my moms desktop, or her laptop can't run it without replacing the graphics card. She just bought a new laptop last night just so she can play sims 3. I can't see this running on the g1.
Not to mention it's only available for osx and vista. Not even Linux even though there are a lot more linux users than android users.

i wouldnt get my hopes up. i tried EA's monopoly port to android, and it was horrible. i'm expecting the same for this.
Yeah I don't really like EA's games. Gameloft has made some pretty good ones though. It just sucks b/c this same game for Iphone is 3d whereas we are stuck using sprites. I can't wait for the day when we start getting games like that.

It was announced at Google I/O
The Sims 3 for Android – New Information from EA Mobile at Google I/O
While EA wasn’t able to video demo the game, they were nice enough to give us a bit of info to hold us over. We talk with Vikram Saraf who discusses new gameplay features and performance adjustments for the mobile platform.
Sims 3 is scheduled for a June 2nd release date on PC and Mac with the Android release to follow.
http://www.androidandme.com/2009/05...-new-information-from-ea-mobile-at-google-io/
Hrm Ill have to try this. I played the Sims on the N-Gage and it was a solid game to be honest. Ran a lil better then its GBA counterpart. So anyone asking about the G1 version, Id say its a strong possibility that its fun. Would run well too Im sure. =)
Yea. This could really go either way. I've never been a big fan of large games like guitar hero and prince of persia on mobile devices, but this looks like it has potential.
I could go for a sim city game.
Perception and psychology of Android vs. iPhone vs. Blackberry in an awesome diagram.

windows mobile users dont really have an image. I think it is because you hardly see any in real life. Most phones are supporting android/blackberry/ios. I know one person who still has a WM device (HD2) and I tell him to put android on it all the time. lol

That's just it, just about everyone I know IRL who wanted a Windows phone gave up when they couldn't find one they liked and just made the change to Android.
The last person I knew who had Windows mobile only kept it so long so he could keep his precious tethering (on edge no less since he had the Dash that wasn't 3G capable). I told him repeatedly that he could tether with android, but whenever he called the TMO store they said it wasn't possible. Finally I just disconnected his laptop from the web & tethered to prove to him it was possible.
Then, he went and (ignored my suggestion of phone) got a MyTouch Slide and is pretty happy with it. Whenever he finds something it can't do, I point him at a free app that'll take care of his problems.
So, in my experience, the Windows Mobile users image is that of people who just don't research and are afraid of change or were holding out hope for WP7 (which is another discussion for another time).

We're too busy getting on and using our phones to care
Honestly though, our typical view is probably similar to the typical android user, but not ginger
View ourselves maybe like Neo (with all that ROM hacking)
Viewed by iPhone users as some big scary moster, and by BB users as BB users are viewed by iPhone users, and by Android users as Old Father Time.
Needs one more column: How seen by xda developers!

Yes and Windows Mobile phones were the most hackable and customizable.
Then, as Microsoft seems to LOVE to do, they assumed they were #1 and no one could ever possibly make anything better, so they just stopped giving it the attention it deserved.
They then lagged behind the rest of the smart phone world. The users who still currently use them

Not trying to be insulting to the phones, but as you said, while revolutionary and groundbreaking, the phones themselves were almost impossible to use because of the horrible interface and slow hardware. By todays standards, the OS is lacking.
In a few years, I'll probably be saying the same about Android in its current incarnation.
Windows 95 was a game changer when it came out, but I think that anyone still using it has got to be pulling their hair out by now.
I know how xda started, I had an account long ago with an email that no longer exists & a password long since forgotten
hahahah this is great!!

my arguments for gigabyte:
much faster cpu (atom equivalent of an i3)
standard 2.5" hdd allows more and cheaper upgrade options (hybrid hdd anyone?)
dual usb with one superspeed
mouse pad, mouse buttons and scroll buttons make it much easier to navagate freely, also certain combos will send certain commands like C+A+D
looks really sexy, pretty much like the hp slate
thoughts: if it had atleast 720p resolution and atleast dx10 supported gpu id be all over this thing
summary: has ehh hardware compared to msi but ease of use seems exponentially bettermy arguments for msi:
slightly cheaper
ips display at 720p+ (you sexy beast)
lower tdp cpu
radeon 6 series gpu with dx11 absolutely OBLITERATES any atom gma (the ability to do some light gaming like bejeweled and heavy weapon would be nice, at more than 15 fps would be even better)
double the ram at a higher data rate
msata insures low power consumption
dual cameras
gps (cuz why not)
slightly bigger battery
dedicated C+A+D button can be pretty useful
tpm security module
thoughts: if i could find a better cpu to upgrade to i could live with everything else and would buy this thing in a heartbeat but lack of mouse controls, super slow cpu and lack of i/o ports are a real turn off
summary: has some fairly impressive hardware for a tablet, but the ease of use seems lacking compared to the gigabyte
I can see where this will end up, so ib4l
ha ha ha! way to be productive bro.

oh yes i know ive been here since i found the place back when the og evo came out so i know that people can be really helpful... when it comes to phones. other things tend to be not so much. atleast in my experience.
I had no intention of being a troll - it was early in the morning here, I briefly skimmed the OP and had visions of it going exactly the same way the recent Mac thread has gone, turning into a haters vs fanboys outing.
To be honest, I would also recommend waiting for one of the 'Surface' tablets running Windows 8. 7 just isn't designed for tablets and is still really difficult to utilise without a keyboard - I speak from experience as I am an EPoS engineer by trade and spend half my life using both XP & Win 7 based touch-screen PC systems in my job.
I have played with 8 and it just looks much better designed and far more ideal for the Tablet market.
The arm version of the surface would have a processor that is similar to those of android tablets and the ipad right now. You wont be able to run any current windows programs on it. However the pro version of the surface should run older windows programs, in addition to the metro apps. The pro version will most likely be a bit pricey though.

Yes I just looked it up and saw that and that is my problem with new Surface machines. RT is supposed to start out at $600 but basically is a glorified WinMob/WinPhone, and since its ARM it will most likely use SOCs which means no CPU or RAM expansion options. On the other hand 8/Pro will be fully compatible with everything and use standard mobile components, but starting at $1000+ is way out of my price range. Again, I have an expensive ass laptop for the power computing area of my life, I just wanted this as a thing that is more mobile and just to mess around with it. And as far as the keyboard thing, SimonTS, a $15 generic mini USB keyboard case from Amazon can easily solve that problem.
I guess when I end up being able to buy something Ill go for the Gigabyte because of the body, ports, and the couple of accessories offered by Gigabyte compared to the... nothing that MSI offers (that Im aware of at least). I bet I can replace the screen on it too hopefully.

I want it badly on N7.
Just need to repair it's usb
I'm excited for this as well, although I probably won't use it for very long, I can't go without my android games.
I'm also excited about this....finally a real alternative OS to Android..hopefully it can work with the MultiROM hack.
So I've got to ask, from a daily use standpoint, what would be the advantages of Ubuntu over Android OS?
I cant believe i just sat staring at the countdown clock on my phone in class just to see it will be released Thursday. Way to get my hopes up canonical. Really reduced my trust level in you guys.

That's just because of seem less multitasking capabilities, better use the OS like its meant to be rather than putting on crappy devices which can't handle multitasking and will end up giving crappy experience to the user. And its flexible, they announced they are gonna release image for N10 and N7. And nexus 7 doesn't quite matches the requirements.

I was kinda of worried that they would leave out Nexus 7 due to its lower specs than recommended .......... but what's up with 4GB ram? I mean there no tablet with such memory in the market!!!
And also i think Nexus 7 would not have the desktop mode like Nexus 10, but I hope browsers are going to be good!
Also, does any one know ..... are they planning to use debian packaging system for ubuntu phone and tablet, or something else?

High ram is so that if its docked on a large display like a TV, people can use heavy Linux softwares which require way more ram than mobile/tablet applications.
No, nexus 7 won't have feature.
We'll see.. If it works it works.. I'll give it a fair shake.. I just can't help but feel there is a catch coming.. It all sounds a little too good to be true.. I'm also curious how much data mining this thing will do and if they are data mining if it's as easy to turn off as it currently is in 12.04 and 12.10. It's bad enough Google and Facebook siphon every bit of information out of us they can.. I don't need another company doing it.

Duh, they're NOT talking about an Android tablet for the Desktop one; they're talking about a full blown x86 tablet.. My guess; a Surface Pro type thing. Anyone else making x86 tablets these days?
I hope that there will be other Ubuntu based distros coming out with a tab is, like mint for example
Nexus 7:
Unlock/Root
PRIME D
M-Kernel
PimpMyROM
This is one of the many reasons why I love being a nexus device owner. Can't wait to try this out. Not so sure about it being a daily driver now that I've seen the spec requirements. But only time will tell.

They need to clean up that table though, it's not very understandable.
