Can't wait!
What everyone else thinks about this?
So excited for this. Will flash it without a second thought.
I want it badly on N7.
Just need to repair it's usb
I'm excited for this as well, although I probably won't use it for very long, I can't go without my android games.
I'm also excited about this....finally a real alternative OS to Android..hopefully it can work with the MultiROM hack.
So I've got to ask, from a daily use standpoint, what would be the advantages of Ubuntu over Android OS?
I cant believe i just sat staring at the countdown clock on my phone in class just to see it will be released Thursday. Way to get my hopes up canonical. Really reduced my trust level in you guys.

Oh wow.. I am so glad I've just seen this.
I've been in two minds about the Nexus 7 as I already own the S3, so it's basically just buying a bigger screen with the same OS.
As soon as this is released I'll be buying this and flashing Ubuntu tablet, that video won me over. I'm really looking forward to it

That's just because of seem less multitasking capabilities, better use the OS like its meant to be rather than putting on crappy devices which can't handle multitasking and will end up giving crappy experience to the user. And its flexible, they announced they are gonna release image for N10 and N7. And nexus 7 doesn't quite matches the requirements.

Not exactly duplicate, that post is more about the desktop version of Ubuntu running on the N7.
My bad tho, posted this thread from my phone.
N7 deserves more ..........

I was kinda of worried that they would leave out Nexus 7 due to its lower specs than recommended .......... but what's up with 4GB ram? I mean there no tablet with such memory in the market!!!
And also i think Nexus 7 would not have the desktop mode like Nexus 10, but I hope browsers are going to be good!
Also, does any one know ..... are they planning to use debian packaging system for ubuntu phone and tablet, or something else?

High ram is so that if its docked on a large display like a TV, people can use heavy Linux softwares which require way more ram than mobile/tablet applications.
No, nexus 7 won't have feature.
We'll see.. If it works it works.. I'll give it a fair shake.. I just can't help but feel there is a catch coming.. It all sounds a little too good to be true.. I'm also curious how much data mining this thing will do and if they are data mining if it's as easy to turn off as it currently is in 12.04 and 12.10. It's bad enough Google and Facebook siphon every bit of information out of us they can.. I don't need another company doing it.

Duh, they're NOT talking about an Android tablet for the Desktop one; they're talking about a full blown x86 tablet.. My guess; a Surface Pro type thing. Anyone else making x86 tablets these days?
I hope that there will be other Ubuntu based distros coming out with a tab is, like mint for example
Nexus 7:
Unlock/Root
PRIME D
M-Kernel
PimpMyROM
This is one of the many reasons why I love being a nexus device owner. Can't wait to try this out. Not so sure about it being a daily driver now that I've seen the spec requirements. But only time will tell.

Since windows 8 will work on pretty much every hardware, is it possible that we will see a windows 8 port for our galaxy tabs? ;D
The developer preview doesn't support ARM. so not anytime soon.
Hold on.
One of Microsoft's official statements about Windows8 development a while ago, was that it would fully support ARM cpu's as i recall.
And as the official preview shows. IT is fully designed for a Tablet (and or) multi-touch device.
well i saw the conference and they said it's Intel processor I5 on Samsung Tab with 4 Gig of ram and 64 Gig of memory .....
oh well, then I guess not until the final release
Don't kid yourself... If anything they'll drop developement for the older devices as there are more and more of the newer ones coming out.... Why support such old tech if its dated? Its more profitable to concentrate finding and killing any problems with the newer devices then supporting devices that, as far as they are concerned, are at the end of their life....
Windows is over
i wanted to really post this, but you had the balls to post it lol.. i downloaded windows 8 dev build a bit ago.... i wish i could install it on my galaxy tab...
No guarantees on support continuing, but I remember reading a Microsoft statement saying that ARM architectures would be supported and there was a mention of Microsoft supporting the ARMv8-based devices at least. It will probably take a hell of a lot of work to make it work properly on the Tab, but once the final Win8 builds hit with ARM support, it *should* theoretically be possible.
always wondered about windows
i for one always wondered if it would be possibile to install windows on our device..

it does. i've done that and it works like a champ. i have tested with 2 device here where by 1 of it is Acer Iconia W500 which works great.
i also tested on machine with spec like dual core ULV 1.2 processor, 1GB RAM and a 5200rpm machine. it works better than windows 7 with some minor tuning.
Windows 8 has been confirmed to run on ARM chips for months now (I believe there were Qualcomm reference devices at BUILD.) however as stated above the Tab 7" is almost a year old now which is ancient in terms of mobile hardware. So if there's a dev that is willing to undertake the project then it is theoretically possible (although there's no minimum system specs yet so we'll see if the Tab's hardware is even capable of running it). Additionally the radios used in our devices may not be supported in Windows 8 simply because they're outdated by now and the device is designed for Android so Microsoft may not bother to build in such compatibility. This means possibly no Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, etc.

It makes a lot of since to have have both apple or both android. You can use your purchased apps on both devices from the same company. But you can't use your ios apps on your android and your android apps on ios. You would have to buy them all over again.
That display is really something to behold. Never seen anything like it before. Would I buy one? Nope. Would I buy an Android tablet? Nope. I have 0 use for both of them at this point.

Have fun with the rest of the sheep.
And why is that high of screen resolution needed on a 10" screen?
Just like the rest of the iDrones, ooh look it is shiny, look at the pretty colors and lights, and I only have to sign my bank account, soul, and first born child over to crapple? Sign me up! Morons!
Give crapple 500+ dollars,
Get higher screen res than is actually needed,
Tablet overheats and shuts down,
Firmware fix will just slow down CPU reducing performance,
Pay crapple hundreds more dollars for apps that aren't actually worth it,
PRICELESS!

my arguments for gigabyte:
much faster cpu (atom equivalent of an i3)
standard 2.5" hdd allows more and cheaper upgrade options (hybrid hdd anyone?)
dual usb with one superspeed
mouse pad, mouse buttons and scroll buttons make it much easier to navagate freely, also certain combos will send certain commands like C+A+D
looks really sexy, pretty much like the hp slate
thoughts: if it had atleast 720p resolution and atleast dx10 supported gpu id be all over this thing
summary: has ehh hardware compared to msi but ease of use seems exponentially bettermy arguments for msi:
slightly cheaper
ips display at 720p+ (you sexy beast)
lower tdp cpu
radeon 6 series gpu with dx11 absolutely OBLITERATES any atom gma (the ability to do some light gaming like bejeweled and heavy weapon would be nice, at more than 15 fps would be even better)
double the ram at a higher data rate
msata insures low power consumption
dual cameras
gps (cuz why not)
slightly bigger battery
dedicated C+A+D button can be pretty useful
tpm security module
thoughts: if i could find a better cpu to upgrade to i could live with everything else and would buy this thing in a heartbeat but lack of mouse controls, super slow cpu and lack of i/o ports are a real turn off
summary: has some fairly impressive hardware for a tablet, but the ease of use seems lacking compared to the gigabyte
I can see where this will end up, so ib4l

oh yes i know ive been here since i found the place back when the og evo came out so i know that people can be really helpful... when it comes to phones. other things tend to be not so much. atleast in my experience.
I had no intention of being a troll - it was early in the morning here, I briefly skimmed the OP and had visions of it going exactly the same way the recent Mac thread has gone, turning into a haters vs fanboys outing.
To be honest, I would also recommend waiting for one of the 'Surface' tablets running Windows 8. 7 just isn't designed for tablets and is still really difficult to utilise without a keyboard - I speak from experience as I am an EPoS engineer by trade and spend half my life using both XP & Win 7 based touch-screen PC systems in my job.
I have played with 8 and it just looks much better designed and far more ideal for the Tablet market.
The arm version of the surface would have a processor that is similar to those of android tablets and the ipad right now. You wont be able to run any current windows programs on it. However the pro version of the surface should run older windows programs, in addition to the metro apps. The pro version will most likely be a bit pricey though.

Yes I just looked it up and saw that and that is my problem with new Surface machines. RT is supposed to start out at $600 but basically is a glorified WinMob/WinPhone, and since its ARM it will most likely use SOCs which means no CPU or RAM expansion options. On the other hand 8/Pro will be fully compatible with everything and use standard mobile components, but starting at $1000+ is way out of my price range. Again, I have an expensive ass laptop for the power computing area of my life, I just wanted this as a thing that is more mobile and just to mess around with it. And as far as the keyboard thing, SimonTS, a $15 generic mini USB keyboard case from Amazon can easily solve that problem.
I guess when I end up being able to buy something Ill go for the Gigabyte because of the body, ports, and the couple of accessories offered by Gigabyte compared to the... nothing that MSI offers (that Im aware of at least). I bet I can replace the screen on it too hopefully.
Alright, I'm sure some people will get a little crazy about this subject but I'm just wondering what others think...
We all love our Android devices and how open and free they feel but some of us like the "quality" of an iPhone..
I've been debating whether to stick to android or try out iOS. Now I know how great android is and how limited iOS can be but I haven't been able to find anything where someone talks about rooted android devices vs JB'd iPhones.. we all the android is better than an iPhone when they are both not hacked or rooted but what do you guys think is the better device for development and features after its been hacked?
I've seen some pretty cool stuff on iPhone but I also love how we can replace our stock apps to have different themes or better functions, etc.
I basically just want to know what everyone's thoughts our about this.

Android OS is superior regardless if it is Rooted or iOS is Jailbroke or not. From what I hear JBing an iDevice makes it slow and unstable, whereas rooting and Android device can only improve its performance. Jailbreaking doesn't get you out of the garden, it only puts a hole in the wall you can look out. Now if you were to say you would like to carry both I can understand, but just trading from Android to iOS is a bad idea development wise.
Edit: I am Android biased of course, but long story short you can see from my sig I do have some value for iOS. If I had to choose only one it would be Android, easy choice. But I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy owning both. Although I think an iPhone over an Android phone would be a huge mistake for anybody except older people that are unfamiliar with tech.

There's tons of threads in this forum alone comparing Apple vs. Android and the consensus most of the time is Android devices are better.

True but this time it's not the OP's fault. This thread came from a different forum.
I had the chance to use both of them and prefer android devices for a long list of reasons. I bought an ipad because well everyone on teh interwebs said it was best and that android tablets were not ready yet. after 2months i sold it, i wouldve sold it earlier but i wanted to wait for the ipad 2 jailbreak in case it improved anything. indeed it could add some features at the cost of stability and speed. at tnis time i already had an android phone and knew that android was moar capable especially when rooted, and so i sold my ipad to get a galaxy tab plus, and i would never switch back.
reasons for idevices were the higher density of high quality apps, which by now isnt true anymore. spontaneously i would say, unless you really really need that one app which is ios only, dont get an idevice.

You're far too nice
I know there are other post like this but they haven't helped me in any way...yea I would love to carry both devices...if I could then I wouldn't have created this thread..I had an itouch before and I enjoyed it for a very long time...but when your look at iOS it seems more complete. Yea I love android and if I were to switch it would be difficult...another reason, look at the support for jb'd idevices...with android phones if u want good development then your selection of phones is really slimmed down.....for example, at Verizon they have a lot of cool phones, one of the best out now is the razr, but there's crappy development because of a locked bootloader...so its like if you don't get a nexus( or similar device) then your basically s.o.l. when it comes to development.. I think most people can agree that it sucks that u can't get the phone that you really want because you know there isn't great support behind it

It's like phone, people who don't want customize interface and want friendly os buy ipad, and people who want to do everything possible with a tablet buy android one.
I've got an iPhone and now a nexus 7 and i didn't regret and go back. Apple it's over now
Was that a statement or a question? If it was a question then simply no, unless Apple do something about the price most people will compare the price of that with the price of other tablets in the same area, even then most people take into account screen size, storage size and price only for tablets, if you take screen size out of the equation then unless they lower the price people will generally decide to go with the cheaper product.
Also the Microsoft surface is out soon, yes it's 10" but it will surely steal audience away from the iPad mini if it's actually confirmed.

No the Mini will not defeat the N7, there a totally different ball game.
As said before the iPad mini will be for those who don't really get what there doing, the N7 is for the enthusiasts who want control over their device.
If the ipad mini ends up being the size that everyone is speculating, it won't(to me) have the portability that the Nexus 7 sports.

No doubt it will still sell millions even if it's pricy. Because wether we accept it or not, it has Apple logo and branding is what some people only care about.

Of course it will. They are late for the 7" party, but it will be a great success.
But why should that matter? Competition is good. 7" size is perfect for a tablet, 10" is way too clumsy. In a few years time I'm pretty sure that 7" tablets will make up for majority of the sales.
this might be better option for most people

Who cares? How about we stop being so damn entrenched in our OS? Does it really matter to you if it succeeds or fails? Will your life change in any significant way?
What most interests me is another quality tablet in a crowded space. That should, in theory, force a price war and a spec war. Both benefit consumers.
Why so many Apple comments in the nexus 7 section. I don't want to read about apple everytime I am trying to read about nexus 7

No offence guys, but I see the ipad mini being a massive hit, in the Australian market especially.
Because of its simple interface and ipad name. And how it syncs with itunes and iphones. That's what apple users want, they don't want customisation, individuality and tweaks like we do.
Although we android users are different to most of the community, some of don't understand how the normal person operates. They don't think to change the look, colours or performance, or to install a whole new interface. All they want is smoothness and usablity. And that is the ipad/iphone, my friends.
My 2 cents, Markj out

I meant *normal* as in the average person. Not saying we are special, but we are not the *normal* population and target of apple devices
Sorry if I offended anyone lol
Meh. Some people will buy it BECAUSE it is an Apple product. I WON'T buy it for the same reason. I own a N7 because it is the best product for my current needs. I also own a TF300T as it is a great budget Android tablet.
This doesn't have anything to do with the Nexus 7
