Hi everyone,
I just traded my android phone for an htc hd7 and enjoy it so far. I have read that the official mango update is going to be released soon, possibly Sep. 15th. At this point, should I wait to see if official mango is going to be released soon or should I go ahead and install a mango build from the development section? If I install a build, will the official mango update be able to be done to my phone or would i have to return it to stock?
Sorry about some of the noobish questions, have had many android phones and can figure stuff out pretty easy with them, but wp7 is a completely different beast it seems and it's taking some relearning and a lot of reading.
Hello...
I installed it this morning. Even though the rumored date is tomorrow i think it will be a while before local carriers release it. Not as bad as NoDo though. Also, with the RTM release you wont get all the extra fraff the carriers add.
I'd go for it. Its ace!
I would suggest searching around about how to make a backup of your device before doing anything. Its quite a simple and quick process and very important to do.
Mango is awesome btw! But I would contact your network provider if its a locked device to find out when the update might hit.
I would also recommend installing it. The final build is out and ready. That is what I installed, and since its the official version, I will still be able to update through Zune on updates down the road. Its quite easy, even on mine which was carrier branded. It took less than 30 minutes, not including file download time.
Mango is great by they way. My Sensation with its over clocked processor, custom rom, and extras has already been out away. Now I want some new WP7 hardware to back up the software.
Like the previous poster says, its the release build so why not? You also have to remember that its unlocked which means you can side load, etc. I'd go for it just make sure you have all of your music, pictures, etc sync'd. Even if itdid release tomorrow, does not mean you will get it and BTW, its a simple, no hasle process. Just follow the directions! Good luck.
I held off a long time with updating to 7720 from beta2 for the same reason. Was just gonna wait it out. But I ended up upgrading. Thing is that when I updated to 7720 from 7712(??) I was able to receive the HTC update which has been out a while but was unable to receive since I was on the beta2 and didn't feel like downgrading to nodo but for minimal changes. So using even the Zune beta client which I have I'm led to believe that when the official mango is released by carriers I'm gonna be able to upgrade right from RTM 7720. Just a thought. Did it on both my hd7's soon as updated to 7720 I was able to receive the radio update.
Sent from my HD7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Thanks for all the feedback! I will continue to read up on the process to update it in the meantime and maybe tackle it this weekend if the update doesn't come out by then.
tried flashing to mango..but games seem not to be working. So flash back to the original firmware.maybe i just wait for the official update...
Am a Happy bunny with Mango RTM installed. I feel its not really a point waiting for your carrier updates as such cause WP7 is as closed as apple.
and all HTC will ever do is update its HTC HUB which you can update anyway via market.
so go ahead and do it.
Whatever you choose I hope you enjoy it. I'm tired of waiting for official Mango, going back to Android. I had high hopes but it doesn't feel worthwhile anymore.

You know, I've haunted these forums for a long time with different phones and I've used WM6+, Android 1+, IOS 3+ and a few others and comments like this really piss me off.
WP7 has come a long way in a short amount of time. Is it perfect, of course not but Mango is a major step forward and puts WP7 on par with any other mobile OS. Granted we dont have as many useless apps or the same apps repackaged and there are a few that are just plain missing but its getting there.
BTW, did I mention what a helpful post it was? Not...
I've just flashed my HD7 up to Mango because I know O2 will load it with Yahoo Crap, and it'll likely arrive some time in November if their track record is anything to go by.
Was using a Blackberry Torch until recently, but swapped it out for the HD7. My second phone is a Galaxy-S, and it was my main phone until I got the HD7. Previously I've had various XDAs Mini-S, a TyTn, and a HD2, as well as work phones at various places. The only handset I had issues with was the HD2, though that was more to do with crap O2 messed with firmware than anything else.
Before Mango I would have rated this handset 6/10 for missing features. Now 9/10 as I still can't have OTA Podcasting, and the Battery could be better.

The great HD2was stolen from me had to settle on the replacement HD7. I gotta get rid of windows 7 on this phone.
bummer
but I doubt they will ever root windows 7. windows phone is locked down. and people on in this forum like the fact that its un customizable. so your probably out of luck buddy. why don't you just trade someone for an hd2. thats what I do
Well yes its locked down. But it wont be forever.
Im sure that at a certain stage some one will hack the HSPL. Then it will be the job to port MAGDLR to HD7
Waiting for that time to come sooonnnnnn!!!! =P=P=P
Wow, yousuf18691... way to necropost a thread from February.
It's already possible (and has been for many months) to put HSPL on the HD7, although if you have the latest set of updates (SPL 5.x) that's currently not working.
As for putting Android on the HD7, first somebody would need to port Android to the HD7, and nobody seems to have done so yet. There's plenty of Android phones if you really want one, though - nobody is holding you at gunpoint and making you buy a Windows phone, I assume.
I've looked around, and couldn't find a solid answer, so I thought i'd ask.
I'm a n00b when it comes to the smart phone world. I've been using the same nokia cellphone for 4 years now, and it refuses to break. But the other day, I wrapped my hands around the HD7 and fell in love.
However, looking around online and reading more than 10 reviews, including Anandtech's 32 pager, there seem to be some glaring... i don't want to say problems, but maybe oversights with the functionality within WP7. So I must ask:
Regarding WP7 and the HD7, since the HD7s launch, has there been any updates to the WP7 OS?
Will there be any (official) updates to WP7 in the future, and will it be easy to update? Like, is it just as easy as getting a wireless internet signal on the phone and downloading the update?
and just for fun, in your opinion, do you think that some changes will be made to WP7 that make it more customisable in the future? Are updates like these possible for this type of phone?
Main reason I ask is that i've never owned a smart phone, and have NO clue on how updating works.
From what i've seen in the past, if something gets 'outdated' or is 'not robust enough', the company will just put out a brand new phone, making the previous one seem like a waste. I know why i shouldn't feel that way, but with cellphones, I do.
Which is why i'm wondering, if there are some 'problems' with WP7, is it possible that updates or fixes will be out in the future.
Sorry for seeming long-winded. I just don't want to seem TOO n00bie... been an avid tech-head for 20 years, but the cellphone thing just never got me.
Until the HD7. Grrrrr...
EDIT:
omg, i just saw the windows phone 7 updates thread.
lol
as you've seen updates are coming, features will get added, I doubt the interface will become more customisable, what will happen is Microsoft will release the tight grip it has regarding what devs can and cant do, which will lead to more great apps and hubs.
just incase you hadn't seen the update procedure, you get notified on your phone that an update is available, when you get home you plug the phone into your PC the zune software fires up, tells you an update is available and asks do you want to install, if you say yes, Zune takes a backup of your phone, downloads the new ROM and then installs it for you, while you get a cup of tea.
Hope this helps

Cool, thank you very much
Any news about flash coming to the browser???
haha
Out of curiosity, I just sent an enquiry to HTC UK about when they might be officially updating the device to 2.3.3 or a subsequent version. Here's the answer I got:
"Thank you very much for contacting the HTC technical support help desk. We are excited to announce that HTC Incredible will receive the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Summer 2011. Stay tuned for details as we get closer to the update availability. Please, for HTC INCREDIBLE S downloads and useful information about your device goes to: http://www.htc.com/uk/help_howtos.aspx?p_id=389"
I don't know about all of you, but this disappoints me - the Desire S is about to be released and yet that will be shipping with 2.3.3. And 'Summer'? That could easily be as late as September. This is all starting to sound very similar to the last time I was burned by HTC when I had a Hero and I was hanging around for 6 months waiting for a 2.x update from Android 1.5.
Anyway, I've told them I don't think this is good enough. I just hope someone finds a root exploit soon so there's a chance of me keeping vaguely up to date with new Android versions. Otherwise I'm going to be more and more tempted to sell this thing on later in the year and find something a bit more update-friendly.
to be honest, that just sound like the marketing department haven't been told anything, and that is a safe, wide target area, I wouldn't read too much into it.
I too suffered the Hero saga, don't want a repeat of that

I see no reason why they shouldn't be able to release an update within the next month or so, rather than 'Summer'. It's the vagueness that concerns me more than anything else!
Also, am I right in thinking that all Incredible S models ship without any carrier/network specific branding or functions within the software? I'm hopeful that will cut down the time it takes to build and release the update.
I think the update comes in May or June the latest. You figure this phone is gone be in Canada on Virgin and Bell sometime early April and in the states on Verizon at the end of April. I figure once the phone is more widely available the update will come. If we are lucky maybe the official gingerbread rom for the Incredible S gets leaked in April.
According to Engadget Chinese (during the press conference of Desire S announcement in Taiwan), hTC representative suggested that Gingerbread for Incredible S would be available "in next 2 weeks". Considering European countries always get the OTA update earlier than Asia Pacific region (Desire, Desire HD, Desire Z, Aria, Legend...). If the news is true, UK should probably get the update in April.
And also they announced a partnership with Skype to provide customized version of Skype in 2.3 update to include video call ability, which is a great news for us. Just hope this Skype version works better than the one in Market...

I had similar bs answer from them..
my enquiry was that as I purchased the phone sim/ carrier free, and it is the carriers who will release the update..which carrier sim wld I need to be using to get it?
in fact the reply bypassed the question completely, saying just 'most carriers wld release the updat (really htc? so do i have to use a sim from a carrier that supports IS???)...and then went on to say 'what is more important is that when the OTA is released by your carrier, make sure you are using wifi to download..
All I wanted was straight answer like 'O2 will def be releasing the update, it doesnt come direct from us, and expect it in xyz'..
HTC havent even released it to carriers yet, so when they do that'l take another couple of months for them to tamper with it..HTC obviously have a finished product which works with sense ui as they've been parading it around on the Desire S..so must be ready for release before now.

More likely than not, the official update will get leaked anyway, so I wouldn't worry too much about that if you're lurking here as you'll probably see it here first. I'm on 3 in the UK who definitely don't support this phone, so this is what I'll probably be relying on unless the update comes direct from HTC. I wouldn't rely on HTC support to know where it's coming from, they're clearly as much in the dark as we are but have to give an answer of some kind. They don't count on people actually being clued up already, sadly.
I agree that if the Desire S is getting it, we should be getting it soon, but I do understand if there's a short delay due to it having to be tested fully on differing hardware. It's just the vagueness and the timescale that gets to me.
if the official update does get leaked, could it be installed without root?
update def won't be from HTC direct, thats the one thing they are adamant about..your's is a perfect example of a carrier that therefore wouldnt be releasing the update..and as for the clowns at 3 dont get me started..I had a DHD from 3, contacted them about a ginbgerbread update and they just told me they were'nt doing it and that 2.1 was the latest version 3 had...erm, hello 3..i bought the phone from your shop with 2.2 already on it!
glad i got rid of my dhd tho...IS is tons better
HTC WP7 owners take note, a new update is likely being pushed to you. And there is no need to take cover: this one is coming from HTC proper, and not Microsoft.
That in mind, we are expecting little difficulty with its distribution, a pleasant change from the past few weeks of struggle that have surrounded the first major WP7 update, NoDo.
What does it contain? According to various comments, the update, called “HTC Update for Windows Phone,” interacts with the a handset’s “radio, firmware and bootloader.”
Another comment claims that the speaker on his handset was significantly louder after the update, which took around 40 minutes to install. If you own a HTC WP7 handset, please check with Zune to see if you have an update, and if so, sound off in the comments what changes you experience.
This is what people are seeing:
Isn’t it refreshing to hear about a WP7 update that is not NoDo?

POST UPDATED TO REFLECT CHANGES:
UPDATE 7712 is Available for download via 'ZUNE FOR MANGO' for all those of you on Mango Beta.
This is called a REFRESH UPDATE ( Its the most closest to the RTM BUILD 7720)
THERE WILL BE NO RTM FOR BETA USERS, AND YOU WILL HAVE TO REVERT BACK TO NODO TO UPDATE TO MANGO WHICH WILL BE RELEASED IN AUGUST
"We didn't do enough testing on this particular build to get the green light to do fully public release. It is stable, but not tested to the extent we do for full public releases. This was a major reason on why you see this released as a 'refresh' rather than as a 'beta 3'. The RC (in Aug) will be released publicly (and freely) to all again"
AND HERE
"For the folks wondering why we’re not providing the ‘RTM’ version, there are two main reasons. First, the phone OS and the tools are two equal parts of the developer toolkit that correspond to one another. When we took this snapshot for the refresh, we took the latest RC drops of the tools and the corresponding OS version. Second, what we are providing is a genuine release candidate build, with enough code checked in and APIs locked down that this OS is close enough to RTM that, as a developer, it’s more than capable to see you through the upcoming RC drop of the tools and app submission. It’s important to remember that until the phone and mobile operator portion of Mango is complete, you’re still using a pre-release on your retail phone – no matter the MS build. Until that time, enjoy developing and cruising around on build 7712 – it’s a sweet ride, to be sure. "
First, next time try to use smaller font size.
For the second, Mango is not yet RTM, it was just a rumor.
Like Bill Cox from M$ wrote: For those following the rumor mill, Mango has not yet hit RTM. We’re excited about the progress... stay tuned.
Can you please make the letters a little bit bigger? I find them difficult to read...
So now it's official. Mango is RTM

for some odd reason, I can't edit my post while using my hd2, but this update has taken 40 minutes so far, and it's still on step 8....

Please let us know how you get on

I didn't try the beta, I stayed stock. I don't think it's Mango though, the os version says 7.0.7392.0.

You will be required to downgrade to NODO in order to be later upgraded to Mango RTM.
I'd wait for your carrier to actually start pushing Mango before downgrading if you like the features in Mango. It could be quite some time (just ask a Samsung Focus owner how long it took to get NODO).
Interesting post here
looks like MS don't wanna push it early to the DEV's as BETA was leaked and also as It was just an MS IMAGE without the proper OEM DRIVERS etc,
DUH.

7661.WP.5.Trial is the current leaked release which most of us are running.
Apparently its rumoured that the RTM release is 7710.
But It doesn't look like we will be able to update it early, might as well have to wait until end august to get it
Official RTM build is 7712.
Official RTM is 7720. The next DEV build is 7712 and will be released tomorrow.
