Otter Box Cases - Motorola Droid Bionic

Hey guys,
Just got my Bionic and was wondering what you thought about cases.
Mainly the Otterbox Defender and Commuter. which do you like better? my problem with the Defender is the plastic bit covering the entire screen, i'd rather a regular screen protector. Can it be removed?
Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

I just got my Commuter.
It's pretty damn awesome. It is slightly larger, but is worth the protection.
I saw the defender, it's really just too big.
The Commuter's screen protector (separate that you apply) only covers the middle of the screen, not including the buttons. It feels slightly strange to swipe down the notification bar for that reason.

I just returned the Commuter. The DB is already a big phone, and either of those two cases really just add to the bulk of it. I'm going to use the phone naked for a while until some minimalist cases hit the market.

I can't believe they have the Defender available the same week the phone is released. Took them over a month to have it for the Charge. I was raging when I saw the Bionic Defender case in my news feed.
/endrant

I think the commuter is absolutely perfect, coming from someone who wore the Droid 3 naked and ended up with a spider Web screen from dropping it. + 1 otterbox for getting this case out so fast and radio shack for the 25% off!

I'm extremely pleased with my Commuter case. It actually makes the phone feel higher quality, which I didn't believe possible. The included screen protector was cheap IMO, so I'll be looking for a replacement.
Great case all around.

I have the commuter and love it. I modified mine to fit the extended battery.

I second that it makes it feel higher quality, the screen protector I feel is great, had the employee do it and it has not One bubble. I loved the defender protector but too thick of a case:/

I love my Otterbox defender. It took some getting used to the bulk, but the protection is superior to any others, imo. Protection & functionality over sex appeal. This case isn't for everyone, YMMV.

Cut up a defender this morning to fit the extended battery and love it. I used to always break my phone at least once or twice during my contract due to dropping it. I am extremely clumsy and get the dropsies a lot. Since I started using otterbox cases 4 phones ago I have never had a problem with a dropped phone breaking, and i drop mine a lot. They just bounce now. LoL thank you otterbox. XD ill happily deal with the added bulk for the protection

I have the Body Glove I got from ebay for $16. It has a kickstand built into the clip which is very handy. I had a Body Glove on my droid 2. I dropped it alot, and I swear by that brand. Cheap Price Good Quality.

Interested in your modification

What or how did you do this? Pics?
I have a defender too but would like to use it the extended battery.

I got the defender and I got used to it although its huge. When im out and about or at work i keep it on but once you snap it on and off a few times it becomes easier so I take it off while Im at home and it makes me appreciate the design a lot more. You really do get used to it and I'm saying this coming from Eris and Nexus S without cases. The only thing Im not really pleased by is the full screen protection as mentioned already. You could definitely remove it if you wanted to. having the extra inset of the defender plus a regular screen protector is definitely enough to keep Spidey from webbing your Bionic.

I got the idea off someone who did this on MDW. Used a dremel cutting wheel, a dremel grinding wheel, and an exacto knife.
I traced a rough pattern of where I wanted to cut the stock battery case, so the electronics would be covered. Left me with this after a few cuts and lots of grinding to fit the corners.
Ill warn you it is not pretty and i make a horrible craftsman. But the rubber covers all ;-)

Then I took the back cover to the otterbox and did the same thing. Once again not skilled craftsman quality. But if you do it good enough the rubber covers all and you can barely feel it has been cut
With the case on the back you can't see anything. But if you run your finger over the back you can feel a slight groove. I did the initial cuts with the cutting wheel. Then used the grinding wheel to make out more space where needed and round out sharp edges. Exacto knife was used to clean up the stuff the wheel couldn't do well.
The guy on MDW made the otterbox case bevel in near the batter to hold it in place. Mine is holding fine as is with. But I guess it is all how you cut it and where. Make sure to rinse the part off with water or use condensed air to clean the cut part between fittings. LOTS of plastic and rubber dust in the air while doing this. Don't want it getting into the phone.

Edit: with case on
No real visible humps or anything

In my opinion, these cases are unnecessary. My OEM gel case protects mine just fine. You guys are putting a paper bag over a Bentley....

Hey There, I bought the extended battery and a hard case/clip with my phone from the Verizon store and I am happy with it. (It was the only option they had) Not as much protection as I might want, but covers the corners, holds on well, and looks good on the phone. I looked at the OtterBox, but that thing was a beast!!
Verizon shell / holster hard case is good
I also got the shell / holster combo hard case from Verizon when I bought the Bionic. It feels sturdy, accommodates the extended battery, and has a kickstand. Also, it still fits in the HD Dock wth the case on.
Oh yea I forgot about that one thanks for the heads up ima have to go check it out that should hold me down until other ones come out and I'm cool off the otter box that **** way too bulky for my taste

My opinion beats spending $49.99 for a Seidio Surface Extended that still isn't confirmed to be released yet.

I saw that thing today, fully assembled. It looks like a black brick with a phone sandwiched inside. Makes the Bionic look like a Zoolander phone.
Not for me.
EDIT: I grabbed the wrong quote. Talking about the defender case.

The other option with the otterbox case is to leave the extended battery back cover off and u can get both pieces of the otterbox to fit together almost. I have the top and bottom cliped together and the rubber outter cover holds it well
Could one of you guys post some pictures of the Otterbox / extended battery hackery? I'm on the fence of doing this myself and would love a visual.

Here you go, Bud. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...ustom-otterbox-commuter-extended-battery.html
I cut up my otterbox defender 5 min after opening it this morning. Cut a hole in the stock battery cover to fit the extended battery like I saw someone post about doing before. Then cut the back of the otterbox itself. I'm not an expert with a dremel, so it isn't pretty. But once you put the rubber on, its all hidden. You can just feel the outlines of the cut into the case just barely if you slide your finger around the back with the rubber case on.
I used a grinding wheel on the dremel and exacto knife to round the edges and clean up my cuts

You like it because its your only option LOL. I skinned my phone with skinomi black matte fully body had to stretch it out a little bit for extended battery then bought that shell holster case. It looks better with the phone skinned and the black matte matches that case perfectly. Only issue is when you apply the skin i had to grind the inside of the case to make it fit. Yea 1/32 of a inch makes a difference the phone wouldn't fit but now it does!!!

I bought the extended battery but removed it and put the phone back in the Defender case. Yeah, that thing is huge, but I've already dropped it twice with no ill effects. I'll wait on the extra battery until I have something safe to put the phone in.
Just picked up extended battery hard case from Verizon. I highly recommend it, solid build, excellent fit and not too much bulk.

A little to much bulk for me but I know some people love these... I plan to stick with the VZW TPU case and the holster for the shell case. They work well together...

The defender cases are a little absurd unless you work construction or are in a war zone but I have the Commuter case for the Galaxy Nexus and It feels like a solid part of the phone. It adds about a cm in all directions to it but it's really worth it if you want good protection and a really solid feel. It's really the first case I've ever had that felt like part of the phone.
Commuter for M Pics
Got the Commuter in last night, thought you guys might like some pics.
imgur.com/a/NuwBV (Can't post links yet, sorry. Just copy&paste.)
Overall Impression: Excellent case. Fits perfect in the hand, giving me a confident grip I didn't have with the naked M. It is the most painless install/removal of an Otterbox I've ever experienced; Simply line it up at the top, drop it down and it seats perfectly. The silicone used is so far not attracting any dust or other particles, and if it does they simply wipe off. Included screen protector fits well, however it had a bad case of rainbow banding in certain light (such as at my workplace) making it impossible to use there. Highly Recommended! :highfive:
Trident confirmed yesterday that they are producing cases for the M. One that interests me is the Aegis model. Its a competitor to the Otterbox Commuter and Incipio style cases. They will launch their line the end of this month or beginning of November. I just purchased the Boxwave Duosuit. Should be here Friday. I'll let y'all know how that one turns out.

Picked up a black commuter the other day. Really wanted the white one for my white phone, but they didn't have it, and I wasn't going to wait after seeing it in front of me.
Fits great, seems plenty protective, and the phone doesn't feel bulky to me. The black case leaves a little room where a "white line" from the white phone shows up, kind of a cool little accent. Would recommend for $35 for sure.

any idea what the difference is between the defender case and defender hybrid case? The review on Otterbox's website says there is no built in screen protector just a adhesive protector for the screen. Can't seem to figure out if the hybrid has the screen protector like other defenders have?

I got the Defender about two weeks ago. Yes...the case is bulky but I do spend some of my work days on construction sites. I love the case.
My only complaint is the latches in the hard inner case. The top, bottom and USB side latches are all solid. Maybe it's because the volume/power button side only has 1 latch but it rarely stays latched. Fortunately, the outside rubber case keeps most of the free play of that side to a minimum.
Biggest complaint: cheap ass belt holster. Cheap material. Kick stand won't even stand up with the phone in the holster. I can't believe they use that as a selling point because it won't even come close to keep the phone from falling over. What a joke!! No lock on the holster latch and it would be EASY to bump the latch, allowing the phone to fall out. Very easy!
The holster is a joke in comparison to the Seidio clip lock holster that I had with my Blackberrys. Much better latch, a lock and better materials. I mostly keep the phone in my pocket because I'm scared of my phone falling out of the holster. The case is nice but it won't protect the phone if it falls15+ floors from one of my projects.
Good case. Terrible holster. Worth $35 instead of $50.

OtterBox Defenfer or Commuter

Hi guys,
I need your help choosing a case from the above mentioned.
To be honest, I've already purchased the Defender, but that's because I didn't see the Commuter in the shop
I spoke with the seller and he told me that there is no problem switching between the models.
On one hand, I am looking for a good protection, after my first Galaxy Note was tragically crashed.
On the aecond hand, the Note 2 with the Defender is f****** HUGH!
What would you recommend me to do? Staying with the Defender or switching to the Commuter?
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Boris

I have the Defender (been using it for several days), switching to Commuter bc Defender is wayyy too damn big and Commuter should give me the best of both worlds; protection and not bulky. My mom has a Commuter and I should have just gone with my gut and got the Commuter in the first place.
Is there such a big difference? And should the Commuter protect against any big falls from one meter height?

Yes the Defender doubles the size of the phone while the Commuter prob adds like 1/2 that , yes the Commuter should be able to protect it from that distance. What I am going to do when I get it is put on a screen protector bc thats the only thing I'd be worried about even with the raised edges.
OK! Thank you very much for yor help.
Are there any other opinions or recommendations? I really would like to hear some other's opinions. (I hope I don't hurt your feelings ).

Not at all, it also depends on your lifestyle and how much protection you need for the phone. Some ppl will need the Defender due to their job or if they have kids that play with their phones etc just keep that in mind.
My defender will be here Monday, so personally can't really give much input but I've always loved the defender series, and I kinda need that extra protection. It it all depends on your needs. Also if you want a holster the commuter doesn't have one, which is also the big seller on the defender for me

the belt clip, can also be used as a face shield/stand too alt not super great in the later
They both great cases. I personally like the defender case if offers better protection. I also like the feel of silicone on the outside rather than slippery plastic like the commuter. Sure it has some silicone on the sides but its just not enough for me. I also like having a belt clip, which I use as a kickstand and I also use it to mount my phone on the Sun Visor of my car.

I have the defender and used it for about a week. I took it off when I had to pull the battery and couldn't put it back on! I love the protection the defender provides but it really does an injustice to the beauty of our phone and further more is cumbersome to handle. I went and compared it to the commuter case and found the commuter is not that much smaller. (Notice photo a few posts back). So for the high cost of the case I decided to send it back. Maybe when the prices drop I'll pick one up again.
I have also had the sedio surface and took that back. Too slippery and didn't care for the hump created by the kickstand.
What I would really like to see in an ideal world is otterbox and tech 21 team up. Tech 21's D30 technology with a slim otterbox case. Tech 21 does make a case for our phone that is actually a decent case except for the lack of protection on the top and bottom (where every phone I have ever had hits the ground).
I have been searching for the perfect case for so long and honestly am getting fed up with the lack of innovation.....otterbox defender is up to $60 depending where you buy it! Without any enhancements to the technology to give the same protection in a slimmer package. Its time companies start putting money back into the products they design. Bring us solid protection in a slim package!

Surly you are talking about i$hone development... Not Samsung? I too am waiting... An otterbox commuter case with a built in kickstand that sits flush with the back of the case would be perfect. Was using the seidio active but just got the commuter.

Samsung Galaxy Note II DualPro SHINE Case

Hi All,
I just got this case in the interim until I get the otterbox defender. I had it fedex overnight because I usually put my phone in my pocket. It reminds me of the otterbox commuter but not bulky and its in a silver Aluminum finish with a good feel and not a fingerprint magnet. Not slippery. Tactile buttons are responsive without any problems. Very well built dual protection case. Access ports are not covered.

Not to be nosy but by the time you're done buying cases, I think you would have spent enough to buy squaretrade insurance.

Yeah the problem was that the Otterbox Defender wasn't available but all these other cases were so I had to go thru looking for a case that would fit in my pocket. The cheap tpu cases didn't instill confidence when I put it in my pocket and the Speck Candy shell case was a little better but it's rubber gray material frays when you put it in your pants. It also was more rigid than the tpu cases but I still was worried about it not being rigid enough. This case however is different and the hard shell is really rigid. No worries about putting this in my pants. The hard material is very solid and a very nice feel. Oh well still waiting for the otterbox but this will do until it gets here. Otterbox using Fedex smartpost sucks! I'm praying it gets here and not lost in the usps christmas frazzle. lol.
This one actually looks very nice. Interesting..
Wow, looks nice and sleek.
I see a seller in ebay has it for about $24.95.
Let me know how you like it when the Otterbox comes since this looks much thinner and easier to pocket.
Nice!..the color blends well with the white note 2..any other colors?..found some pink/white on ebay..
Psy, could you snap some pics of this case on your phone? Its hard for me to see how it looks with the stock images on their site. Thanks.

Finally stumbled across this case after searching for three days or so for a case for my incoming Note 2.
I just ordered it off ebay and had to cancel my other case I had ordered from Amazon. I figure the extra $8 will be well spent, and I really like the aesthetics of it. No kickstand is a positive for me.

One more.
These pictures don't do this case justice. Its a very beautiful, well-built, classy, slim and durable case. Friends and fellow employees are telling me what a beautiful case it is....Its really shiny.

How the sides hold up to pressure, around the outside of the screen? I noticed theres no support from the hard shell to stop the silicone lip from being pushed back from the screen. Ordered one, will just have to see I guess

Because the outer shell is very rigid there is very little play to move the silicone lip. You have to force it hard to move. This is not a case for changing batteries. I'm actually scared to pull the phone out of the case. I had the otterbox commuter for my old Galaxy Note i717 and the material for the outer shell of that case is less rigid than this case. my 2 cents.

Thats too bad, I have to do battery pulls occasionally (especially now that the power button long press doesnt reboot) and I usually depend on dual layer being fairly easy to remove. Right now the Aegis case I have feels like its bad to remove and replace frequently - which is good I guess in general just cus its snug, but bad of you need to remove the battery once or twice a day

Thanks for posting pictures. Mine should be coming in soon. I gather from your asher past that you're suggesting that removing the phone from the case seems pretty difficult?

I'm taking my phone (Galaxy S III albeit) out of the same case on a daily basis (to put into an arm sleeve for a run) and it holds up just fine - pry off one top corner, then another and you have your phone out of it.

Just got this case in last night and it is a great case no doubt, beautiful, not bulky, and offering decent protection, but holy cow is it tight and both hard to put on and remove. It's a concern for me, as I need to change the SIM when traveling.
I'm really afraid to damage the case, it is the tightest fit of any case for any device I have ever owned.

Hsini Patrol/Duty Vertical pouch

Way way back I commented that I was looking for some way to carry my phone on my duty belt. It's a complete nightmare to find a good looking and secure way to carry a phone the size of the GN2 on a 2-2.5 inch belt (Duty). If you're in law enforcement or Corrections, typically you're stuck with an Otterbox that triples the size of your phone and still doesn't slide over the width of a duty belt.
Well I finally found it. The HSINI vertical pouch (Amazon link <-- that a way).
Just to start, of course it comes with cheap packaging probably from China. Fine with me because I like China, so there!
Included in the package are a super cheap slim hard case for the phone, a stylus that won't be used, and a carbine ring that also won't be used. Maybe my kid will use it to decorate a bookbag or something. The only keeper for me is the pouch itself.

The pouch itself, despite the ridiculously long name on Amazon, uses velcro to secure the lid, and a nylon canvass hoop which you can slide over a belt or Duty belt in my case. Fits perfectly over my 2.5 inch belt. No wiggle room at all.
I wouldn't really call it 'heavy duty' but I would call it pretty medium duty.
My phone is in a UAG case and still fits just fine, so I imagine most cases would still allow your phone to fit inside the HSINI.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Very similar to the one I reviewed BUT this one has a very important point of a wide belt loop!!! Mine can probably fit a belt no wider than 1 3/4". And it also looks clean without any metal label, plus has heavy duty cloth material versus heavy duty nylon (in my review). Looks cool on that belt!
Now I just need to move my OC spray to a more natural position on my belt
Cool I been looking for something on my belt also. Thanks

Looks good enough that I ordered one. Hopefully the rugged case for the ZeroLemon will fit when that comes out.
Got my Zl today. Fits in the holster just fine.
AWESOME.
Your belts empty compared to mine lol. Dual Mag Pouch / Tazer Holster / OC Holder / Asp Holder / Gun Holster / Cuffs / Cell phone pouch . It really sounds like alot but it all kinda works for me lol.

Just throw your phone instead. It's heavy enough to do some damage and you've got it in a UAG anyway

Awh.. gotcha. I just got my hip holster in this morning so I drop my gun off my hip. I want another for my tazer. Should really give me some freedom on the belt. I just wish my dept would pay for the damn thing. Stupid budget cuts.

Would love a tazer, but then I'd be writing more Use of Force reports I think.
Vectron, the GN2 with the ZL battery is so [email protected] it's LEO approved! :good:
Thanks for the confirming about that the UAG case fits in this. I was gonna make a kydex holster for it when I got around to it.

Considered that too. But I'd have to learn how to mold it
I've grappled a couple of knuckleheads already and it's turned out fine. Doesn't get in the way of a short foot chase. Guess I'll see how well the holster holds up to going over fences sooner or later.
I can't believe you guys carry your phones on you. Mine stays in the patrol car. No worse feeling in the world like clearing a residence and some jackass behind you getting a call from honey wanting a bag of chips or wanting to tell what cute new thing the family cat did. I figure if I'm out of my patrol car, I'm most likely dealing with someone who deserves or has earned my undivided attention.
However, I have seen no other phone in the world that takes such nice crime scene pics! And sending them directly to the database from the scene is hella nicer than burning them to disk!
Plus, leaving it in the car prevents some dirtbag having the opportunity to crush it, keeps me from having to deal with the whole restitution thing to get my deductible reimbursed, and gives me one less reason to whoop dat ass...

Great reason to keep the phone on vibrate. Won't distract anyone in the field.
I have a Roadster 2 bluetooth speaker in my car. The thing is awesome in that it automatically connects to the phone every time I get in the unit. Even announces that it's connecting.
For me my phone is a pretty useful tool in identifying schedule drugs on the spot and referencing Spanish words beyond my vocabulary. I also use it to stealth record folks that I think might be lawsuit crazy.

In your searching around for this, you didn't happen to come across something pretty much identical but with a clip option did you? I realize you guys need the belt loop, but for my purposes I often prefer a clip. The holster looks perfect other than that.
Find a clip that will fit over a duty belt is a bigger challenge since there's often the inner liner belt to contend with.
Take a gander over on amazon. I haven't found anything that quite fit that bill.
