Easy Tether - Motorola Droid Bionic

Just curious to see if anyone has tried Easy tether or PDA net with the bionic.

Give it a shot and let us know

I ask because I am not completely sure the Bionic is for me... trying to make an informed decision before I drop the $$$...

The only tethered apps people were able to use without paying are the USB tethered apps.
None of the WiFi hotspot apps worked.
I ended up signing up for the service so I would be able to do both. I can USB tether with my laptop, but not with my Tablet. Now I can easily do both.

I just tried Easy Tether on my Bionic. Connects just fine, but not giving me internet access for some reason. Will have to troubleshoot it later.

Is PDA Net the one that is recommended or are there other ones that work as well over USB?

I purchased Easy tether from the Amazon AppStore for $5 and it works flawlessly.
I am curious as to if anyone has been able to get USB tethering going on their Xoom.

Thanks. Will try it out. Did some researching. PDA Net claims it can hide Tethering from being detected. Wondering how valid of a claim that is.

i downloaded easytether light for free from the market and it works easily and perfectly on my macbook. any questions or troubleshooting, let me know.

Works good, bought it from Amazon App store today, dowloaded drivers, works great. Didn't do a speedtest on tethered pc, but pages loaded quick, no video stutter from youtube or netflix with good 4g signal.

Are you wanting to tether the xoom to a pc/mac or the xoom to the Bionic? I am able to tether my xoom and Bionic via bluetooth.

I recieved my Bionic last week from Verizon. The ads touted mobile hotspot with 4g LTE.
It was not working on my phone so I called the subscription number and asked why.
With the Bionic (4gLTE) service your phone will allow it to be used as a hot dopt for up to 5 devices at a time. This is a no cost option (at this time). If yours is not working call them and ask for the service to be turned on for you.
The current sales literature tells you that this is included at no additional charge.

i was told in the store this was a 30$ a month add on. i will be calling them. what number did you call?

I'm using PDA Net as we speak!! Works fine for me.

So today there is a new update for EasyTether.
I go to the marketplace to try and update but on the top it says "This item is not available on your carrier". I still have the app on my phone and it still works flawlessly but this is something new that I've noticed.

I just called the number that pops up (800) 256-4646 and was told that it is $30 per month.

Send the folks over at EasyTether an email they will hook you right up

i just got off the phone with verizon about their add. claiming that it was false advertising. i told them that i had an unliminted plan, why should i have to pay for another internet plan. well no no avail it did not work. i asked to talk to the supervisor and she told me that if i use verizons wireless hotspot that i would have to pay. but what i found odd was that she divulged a very nice tidbit in not so many words. she literally said if i root my phone and was android savoy i could manage to get it to work. she told me to look on the market for apps that would benefit the cause i was looking for. now i have never found a verizon rep that would ever say something like that. but i took one step further and asked her if i went the market app way, would i get penalized? her response was no. she told me that there is no way for them to see how many devices were hooked up the the phone. nor do they look for that. its all computer run. she said if i use gigs upon gigs of internet it would throw up a red flag and they would look further to see what was the cause. but if your a casual tetherer here and there you would be fine. she also told me that she has worked there for 5 years and has never seen anyone get in trouble for tethering. now this is when i diall 611 on the phone. not in a verizon store. bottom line is, there is hope for us lol

You can tether computers with bluetooth.

So, I was bored and sitting in class, when I decided I should add my D3 to my laptop as a bluetooth device (for file transfers down the road).
After I established a connection, I figured out you can tether through bluetooth.
Here's how (for Windows 7):
1) Press Start
2) Open "devices and printers"
3) Enable bluetooth on your phone
4) Click on "add a device" in the top-left of "devices and printers" on your computer
5) Establish a connection.
6) Find your D3 in the list of devices
7) Right click the phone's icon
8) Hover your mouse over "connect using" so that "access point" pops out to the right of the menu
9) "Click "access point"
10) INTERNET
just found this out too...
is there any way for verizon to figure out that youre doing this (other than the obvious 'if youre torrenting and pulling huge amounts of data they'll know')
I don't know if they can or not. I've pulled over 15gb of data this month (on my Incredible before I switched to D3 2 days ago) using the wireless tether app. I know they can't with that, so maybe this works the same way.

They offered unlimited packages then get indignant when someone uses more than a couple hundred megs.
They put the new tiers in place PURELY to make money. They know as people start using netflix and spotify/pandora they will use more and more data. They could have beefed up the network, or charged people so much money that people won't be able to use the features they bought on said phones.
They went with option B.
I didn't see this post before, I've been trying to get Wifi Tethering to work on my SIM Based (3G) Droid 3 on Telstra (in Australia).
I tried everything, new ROM, wifi tether hack, tether market apps but nada. It would connect to Wifi, but either NAT doesn't work, or something like that is stopping data from passing "through" the phone.
This morning I thought maybe I can get Bluetooth tether to work with my Asus Transformer (unrooted).
After pairing, and selecting "Internet Access" in the pairing options on the tablet everything works! Awesome. I was so close to sending this phone back.
All I need to do now is work out how to fix the CRAPPY battery life! (and figure out wifi tether when I have more time).
Cheers
If you want more battery life, get the official extended battery. It gets me through a heavy day of usage with ~20% to spare.

I'm in the same boat as you. All I've got left to deal with now is Verizon's radio lockout of the call forwarding/waiting options, and i'm set.

The technology has been around a while, its greedy carriers that have been blocking it. It makes no sense with metered data plans, x GB is still x GB whether consumed on the phone or on a tethered computer. We are surprised the Droid 3 and other Droid phones can bluetooth tether for free without root. Why would I pay for wifi tether when bluetooth is free. I'm not sure what the speed limit of bluetooth is but I get full 3G speeds.
Mine is extremely slow on my work laptop compared to when I use the mobile hotspot. Is this normal? It's a work laptop and they still force me to use windows XP could that have something to do with it?
Is this free without any rooting/hacking?

wifi tethering

I'm rooted and have installed both wireless tether for root users and barnacle, but when I turn them on I get a notification that my vzw mobile hot spot is active. Should I ignore this since I didn't sign up for it? Also the wireless hot spot box wasn't checked off. Am I getting charged for hot spot now?
Not yet Available for the bionic, if you did not get the hotspot with verizon it wont work it will ask you to call verizon to add hotspot. no tethering yet

Is "Wireless Tether" app actually working for you? Have you tested using a wireless device to use the phone's 4G? Which version are you using? 2.0.7 or older, or the new 3.x beta?
Ill tell you from my own eyes...if you use a rooted tethering app...VZW does recogize the IP addy being broadcasted and will promt you to purchase the tethering function from them. If not you will be charged 1.99 per MB. Ive seen a bill reach over 700$

Aye Bernardo... What luke says is true. When you purchase a data pkg from any upstanding mobile service company they attach a public ip addy to your account. That is how they know your ip address... You can't change your phone's public ip without more money than it's worth. If you decide to and can get it to work for less than $30/mo, or whatever Verizon charges, lemme know, because I'll have a hefty business proposition for you.

I simply asked for proof..... I know many people who tether without overage charges. I simply need more information.
I would also like to see some links regarding the "research" that I need to do to better understand how phones handle IP addresses. I am no expert by any means.
I am curious...while tethering I pull up http://www.whatismyip.com/ from my phone and the connected device and both are the same. How does VZW differentiate which device is pulling the data if it is routed thru the phone first?
Please take this as a time to inform the uninformed..
It's not an IP address that identifies your tethering transgressions to Verizon, it's your network access identifier (NAI), which is used to authenticate your phone on the network. Depending on how the device is communicating to the network it will use a different NAI. The trick is to convince the phone to use the same NAI for tethering as it would for on-device data usage... unfortunately that hasn't been figured out yet. Apparently the old method no longer works with the new LTE chipset.
There is a hack to get the included "Mobile Hotspot" application to work without an account, but Verizon can easily track this and I would not be at all surprised if your next bill included a tethering plan or a charge for $2.99/MB.
My advice is to forget about illicit tethering for the time being, or legitimately subscribe to the tethering plan.
helpie a girl out please

Wireless Tether on Bionic

Has anyone gotten wireless tether to work on rooted Bionic yet? I can get connected, but it seems as though verizon's hotspot tries to start with it and thus blocking an IP from being given out and any internet tethering to my devices.
I was an avid user of wireless tether but please do not use it while still running stock rom. Verizon and motorola have security features built into the stock software to help them track people using what they consider illeagal tether apps. Please refrain from using such apps until there is a custom ROM released so as to avoid bringing us to the forefront of verizons attention. In the meantime use pdanet USB tether app located in market. It is important that we as a community stop using our knowledge to continue pushing carriers and handset manufacturers from locking us out completely. If we continue our current trend of outrite defiance in use of these wireless tether apps (wheather you think it should be ok or not is irrelevent until a court rules on it) we are only hurting ourselves in the long run. Please for now use pdanet or similar USB tether app as they are not frowned upon by carriers. If you need to know why here it is, USB apps allow only one device to be connected which limits bandwidth used at one time, wireless tethers allow you to run everything in your house simultatiously greatly increasing individual strain on the network and makeing the user experience for all worse in the long run as the network can only handle so much.
Well, there it all is, an informed public is a better public... Happy modding to all.

Just curious, why would they frown upon wireless tether yet pdanet is "acceptable"? Either way you're bypassing the tethering charge. I can see how wifi tethering would lend itself to a greater amount of abuse as you could have multiple devices using it concurrently - but you can do that with pdanet as well with a little more effort. So I'm wondering how you reached this conclusion? Thanks.
Im confused as to how doing wifi connection is more of a burden than usb. Either connection you're bandwidth is still limited to your 3G or 4G service. On 3G my download speeds are around 3mbs. This is usb or wifi. Now that bing said. If i connect my computer by itself, I keep all this speed to myself. Connecting my wifes computer, xbox, etc. This doesn't bump ky speed to 3mbs per device. Now the 3 devices are sharing the 3mbs im able to connect at. So pleased enlighten me how usb is more acceptable than wifi? All you spam nothing but fear with no actual proof. This has been goingnon since the.DROID OG, and I still have read no proof, just scarce ramblings of people who think they know what they're talking about. P3Droid has stated that the tethering is coming to an end, and that they're getting smart enough to detect it, but still nothings happened yet. Usb or wifi you're "stealing" internet from Verizon, get over yourself and do it or don't.
This will probably only come when we get custom roms.
Wireless Tether
I have GOT to be able to use Wireless Tether on my Bionic. I had a D2 but am in limbo trying to get it back to stock so I just decided to order the Bionic, root it and use Wireless Tether because I really don't know what I am doing, have already spent WAY TOO much time trying to get my D2 to work and am VERY frustrated. :-(
I am hearing mixed messages. Does ANYONE have any experience with using it? I am going to use the D3 root method to access the app.
Thanks for any input anyone can give me!

Since tethering with a USB cord works, what's keeping you from doing that?
I've tried all the apps out there to no avail. According to what I've read, you'll havento have 2 separate programs on your computer and get into the actual coding on the antenna side of the phone to over ride this. Easy fix is keep a DROID that the tether works on, and activate it on myverizon.com, and deactivate it when you're done. It takes less than 2 minutes to do this. A headache, yes, but a simple fix till someone comes up with a patch or better way.

What? you can do that with your old phone, do u just dial *228 to activate it?
*288 works on older phones to program them to the 3G network for data and voice. I don't know how all the 4G phones are, but the bionic's programmed and roaming capabilities are done through a 4G sim card in the phone. The bionic wont even allow a *288 phone call to go through

So I can take my OG droid with wireless tether and call *288 and it will activate and I can use it to tether from, then when I want to go back to my Bionic what do I do to activate it? goto my verizone online and do it. This is the one of the things I miss about the OG Droid do whatever I wanted on it with no issues, just was old and slow at the end. The Bionic 4g of course just screams through any D/L, Netflix etc.

First thing you'll have to do is go to myverizon.com and activate you Droid OG with the ESN number, then dial *228 to get service. then you can use your phone as you were before. when you're done, go back to myverizon.com and reactivate your Droid Bionic, and turn it on with your sim card and it activates its self. I myself, have dialed *288 several times on my Bionic, and it has done no ill things to my sim card. I've actually been swapping sim cards out from other companies and trying to unlock my phone and haven't damaged anything yet. (not recommending this tho)
why not just use wired tether?

Work computer won't allow new software to be installed. There is no difference between wireless tether and wired tether. In fact, wired gives a faster connection. It's garbage that we can't use our own bought phone for whatever the hell we want.
I tried to freeze using bloat freezer the mobile hotspot program from popping up but the program doesn't not show up in AND tried to use Root System Tool to identify and quit the program after opening Garden Wifi--- NO DICE.
Need something to quit mobile hotspot from popping up. NOTHING HAS WORKED!

Has this been confirmed as working? I'm supposed to root a bionic for a friend of mine who really wants to use wireless tether. Thanks

It's confirmed to work, but it's also very possible VZ can just track it easily since you're using their service and they'll stick you on a tiered plan paying tons more than the grandfathered unlimited plan. With custom ROMs there is software that prevents them from seeing if you are browsing the web on your handset or using it to power your laptop. Be careful.

Trade in

Just curious if anyone has tried to trade in this phone at Verizon under their trade in program. Is it worth anything?

It's worth $66. That's a little depressing lol.

Oh well, guess I'll have to wait until September and use my wife's upgrade to get a Droid Maxx
How about this?
I have had a few calls to service, the issue is that the 4Ghotspot won't download data to my PC(s) even though I can obtain data using the phone's browser or on tether. If I wait long enough the data will work (something like 10-15 minutes). This does not happen every time but often. If they delete my account and add it again everything work great, but in a few hours it may be messed up again.
The support person offered to send me a Razr, I told him to make it a Maxx, but he was stuck on the idea that he only had a Razr. So one is coming tomorrow to see if this solve the problem.
I will be amazed if this fixes the problem, but I figure it is nice to see them offer a different phone to help with the issue.
Their Network team is working on the issue too. I think an overhead application on their end is where the problem is, I have used a local application that tests the path from my PC to any Internet IP address, it show each IP address, the hop time, and data lost rate in both directions. The my PC, phone and the network hardware is working just fine.

Why would I do something crazy like that? I know I haven't. I still love the phone, and my wife will concur that I only like technology for 3 months before I feel the urge to upgrade. I am getting itchy just thinking about my tv, **** now my laptop. The government is giving me a couple bucks. Hmmmm.

Jeez, see if they will throw in a kitchen sink too. LOL. They have the MAXX. I don't like Verizon sales. You need to do research, or they will stick you with crap. Heard them telling a customer, that no companies do unlimited data. And he was trying to push the Ipad on the guy.

There aren't any companies that offer truly unlimited data. Even Sprint recently announced that they throttle peoples data.

I'm so happy that I have my unlimited data. 4g speeds and sometimes around 74GB for the month (I pay for the HotSpot) and never a drop in speed. People may complain about Verizon, but I challenge anyone to give me a truly better service than Verizon can. (The only thing that would cause me to leave Verizon at this point is taking away my grandfathered unlimited data plan)
Verizon customer service has gone down a bit, but still surpasses any others I've ever dealt with. Even when they had 3 outages (4g) in December, I made a friendly call and explained I was not happy with the fact my 4g HotSpot was proving useless for the month and a time I really needed it (out of town for Holidays). They gave me a $30 credit without skipping a beat.
T-Mobile has Unlimited 4g Service, which includes Tethering, for $30/month on a prepaid plan. That's the BEST plan/price for max data. But, the 4g speeds are only for the first 5gb, after that, it goes to 2g, which is basically Dial-Up speed. In other words, some major throttling going on there.
Oh, and to add something to go with the OP... eBay or Craigslist your phone(s). Never trade in. You will never get what the phone is worth on the trade in. My Droid 2 Global was worth $56 trade-in. I got $220 on eBay...
-Cybie
Cybies right. I've sold old ass phones on ebay. Sold the old first gen razor for 25$ and got 40$ for an old cingular sliding keyboard.

I've been on Verizon unlimited for years and I've had 4g for about 7 months. I never thought I was affected by throttling even though I knew they did it until recently this month. I have 3 days left in my cycle, I'm at about 11GB and sometimes webpages take for ever to load and even time out on me.
If i download a file, the speed seems the same, for example I downlaod a 100mb podcast each day and that takes about the same time as normal.

Top 5% of users based on data transfer usage. So all these people tethering for like 100gb a month, they'll get throttled.

cant get tether working on ics leak...

I'm on the second leak and tried both regular rooted stock and safe strapped to cm9 but wireless tether for root users fails setting up adhoc on both. Anything I'm missing here or is this a known issue?
Try the generic ICS profile on wireless tether.

You should pay the additional $30 if you want to WiFi Tether. (or switch to Sprint). Don't be cheats. Rooting and installing custom ROMs isn't illegal, it just voids your ability to call in for phone support...WiFi Tethering without a plan is against the TOS. Nobody should be encouraging others, or instructing them on how to violate the TOS. XDA mods really need crack down on threads like this. If you pay for the feature it will work without you having to do any workarounds.
I use it in cases when there is no wifi and we need a real computer, people already pay upwards fo 100 dollars for one line. You pay for the data you should use it as you want. Plus the original android had wifi tether built in for free.

You got that right! I pay upwards of $350.00 a month for 3 lines with unlimited data. What part of "UNLIMITED DATA" does verizon not get? I will continue to hack my phone until it can no longer be done !
Thank you I pay out but for my phone I should be able to do what I want with it besides it's not like they aren't making a killing off me and now they want to make more I work very hard for the little bit of money I get after all my bills are paid I have 60 dollars a week to live off of and that is not including food and I get no food stamps or anything so believe me when I say

Paying for tethering is simply not possible on a ROM that doesn't have moto/vzw apps built in, either. Nobody would possibly pay for something that they can't use due to it not existing

Haha! You tell em.
I don't know about you but I'm tired of paying nearly 200 buck for 2 smart phones that I can't do anything I want with. If I have the capabilities and the know how, then I see no harm. I think you should save your opinion or start your own thread called the "Android Police." I'm personally here to give help where help is needed if I can.
I also personally see no problems using my phone as a wireless tether because the 4GB data plan I have that I pay 30 bucks for each line runs out so quick each month I feel I either have to be rich or be a drug dealer to be able to afford the plan I need to get the most out of my phone.
PS. I think this post is a great candidate for a dislike or thumbs down button.

I was personally with sprint for 10 years before switching to Verizon. I was tired of paying more than 2 grand a year with sprint and couldn't even get good data signal at home or work. Then they made me pay to get out even though I didn't get good service to begin with. Verizon's 3g and 4g run circles around sprint.

WiFi tethering is part of AOSP Android, bud. The carriers (at least in the US) remove this feature and include their own hotspot for a fee. Installing the SQL hack is technically against the TOS, since in that case you are using their service, they just don't know - but when you use an app that does *not* use their service, but rather Android's built-in capabilities, then you are doing nothing wrong.
