What do you mean by enable 3G? If you mean you don't get service from your provider the phone may not support your UTMS frequency and there is nothing you can do about it. If you mean 3G data, as the phone will generally only have the access point information for US providers, you will manually have to enter in your access points, additionally, I know with my droid 3, I had to enter the access point information several times and restart the phone a few times before it would attempt to use them for data.

Droid 3 In Australia

Hey, I'm in Australia (GSM) and I purchased a Motorola Droid 3 (XT862) from America a few months ago.
Should I have bought the XT860 (GSM version)?
I was with Optus but because they don't support the 850mhz network I switched to Vodafone because they had it. So now I atleast have data working on my phone after those months of not having it, but vodafone sucks, especially on this phone (text messages sometimes don't send/signal cuts out all the time) but the 3G is very good.
The phone I previously had before the Droid 3 was a HTC Tmobile G2 which I had also bought from America, and everything worked perfectly.
If I buy the XT860 will it fix everything?
On the Motorola website it says the XT862 and XT860 have the same networks... but the XT680 is supposed to be used on GSM, so would it work fine?
Sorry if I confused anyone, I'm really baked.
Thanks in advance for anyone trying to help
Maybe you could try the T-MOBILE AT&T hack?

i have XT 862, on GSM and it works perfectly. More than that, I use also vodafone
The xt860 (and xt883) would not be any better; all they (along with the xt862) support UTMS 850/1900/2100mHz. Thus, you probably didn't get a lot of 3G on the Optus network (which uses 900/2100mHz). The main Vodafone 3G network in Aus is 900/2100mHz, but they are in the process of rolling out an 850mHz network.
Telstra Next-G uses 850mHz (and they have 2100mHz as well, but only in cities I believe)
Anyway, in brief: If you're willing to switch to Telstra, you should get great results. If not, Vodafone is the next best option.
I have xt862 on optus in Austraia. I just stay in global mode. I did experiment around with some of the custom roms but found weirdnesses like my calls not coming thru. I went back to stock and now im going to stay on stock until cm9 reaches release. Im not having any issues on stock.
Hope this helps

Just did it, I suppose it improved the situation a tiny bit, but i'm not sure.
I will do some tests on the Telstra network, see if it's better than Vodafone.
Im using the phone in Global mode atm and I'm getting a decent 3-4 bars instead of the 1 or 2 i'd normally get which excites me
And the network type is displaying HSPA.
But I cannot send text messages, everytime, it just says "Text message not sent" which is very annoying. Anyone know anything about this? When I swapped over to Vodafone from Optus I could send texts but after a point it just stopped working...
Anyone know anything about this?
thanks
So does the droid 3 bought from usa connect to data services with optus at all?
How fast is data transfer in "global" mode?
late reply i know, but I'm on TPG [Optus network] in Qld, Aus with the droid 3 XT862.
from memory, all i've done is done the 'hack' to show actual reception, rather than 1 bar. I run the phone on the global setting.
I just ran a speedtest.net check, got an internode server in Sydney. ping 139ms, DL 5241kbps, UL 1202kbps.
OP, when you were with Optus, did you go through your account settings and make sure you had 3G data turned on for your phone, etc? I'm not trying to patronise or anything, but it always helps to start with the basics when fault finding.
Regards,
Hi All,
Im also in Australia, with Vodafone, and am looking at getting myself a Droid 3 as well.
Since the phones aren't released here, what happens about software updates? Im assuming they won't happen via OTA?
Im leaning towards the XT860, rather than the XT862, any particular reason to go for either?
Thanks,
cevad

No difference between them but the xt860 has more dedicated roms here. Both are the same phone and just build.prop edits are needed to get the phones up and running in 5 mins. OTA updates will still work anywhere tho if you root and mod your phone don't use use the OTA feature as you will screw your phone.
All you need to do select wcdma/gsm mode and manually put in your service provider APNs to get 3G. Find this on the Voda site.
Best place to find your APN is here:

I managed to get a xt862, but I cant get data working on optus? (live connected)
calls/text works - tried global mode, tried GSM/UMTS mode, tried manually selecting optus 3g network, made sure the data setting was enabled which is actually under "battery & data manager". Already manually input the optus apn.
what am I missing?
Do you have to do the tmobile at&t hack? running everything stock from factory; or will rooting the phone/install ics help?
I have the one bar reception bug which I read on another thread if that makes a difference.
nvm, got it to work, for some reason manually inputting an APN didnt work, had to find the optus site and send it via sms.
Speed isnt too bad.
The next problem now though is wireless hotspot. It connects but no data goes through for some reason

If the xt862 is the verizon version, I have read that verizon have blocked the hotspot stuff from working.

[Q] [Problem] Note will not connect to network

Yes, this sounds like a stupid issue, but I find it incredibly bizarre. I'm not really tech-savvy, especially with phone hardware, and I've searched through the forums for any possible answers with no luck.
My Note is actually the Korean LTE, SHV-E160K, running stock ICS 4.0.3. I have not rooted it or done anything to the phone. My current service provider is Straigh Talk, on the AT&T network. My issue is, I can not get my Note to connect to the ST network while I'm in TEXAS. The phone works perfectly while I'm in California. I've tried countless solutions that I found online, with no dice.
One person told me that it might possible be the ST Network, but the sim in question works with my old unlocked G2 in both Texas and California. So I'm thinking it's the Note that's the issue, but I can't figure out what. I'm going absolutely crazy, and with my limited understanding of phones, I can't think of what else to do.
Any phone-savvy people know what's wrong? Please let me know if I can provide any more info!
ok, check imei if its intact, dial *#06# should be the same as on the box or label below battery. If not it could be blocked. You need samsung to fix it. Or restore an efs backup.
Next to this, check if apn settings are as specified by provider. Go to settings, more, then mobile networks then acces point names. These on some providers can be pushed throught website. Most likely settings are on their website to set manually. sometimes you need to delete(need root) apn and then setup again. I read instances of that.
If provider is not active in the country you are in, then you might need to set it to connect to your preffered network. do that also from mobile networks. Check this anyway.
Next to this Gnote does not have all bands capability, if in a country that provides on band frequency that note does not support you lose connectivity.
You can also check airplane mode on of. Select packet data on of, just data on off. Just to test.
Be carefull with roaming option in settings, cause that allows you to register on different then providers network, you can incur additional roaming costs.
As you see a pletora of possibilities, let me know if it worked, or if you need more info, pm me

Not getting 3G :(

Hello,
I live in a country where 3G is in 2100 Mhz band. I bought the phone unlocked but it is still showing only E even after enter the operator's 3G APN.
I am not able to use the *#*#4636#*#* code OR able to choose the network. It is greyed out.
What should I do?!
Thanks.
That 4636 menu is disabled on the Atrix HD, download the app Phone Info from the market. It will allow you to access the menu and change the network settings.

Its disable on the AT&T Atrix Hd just like on my Atrix 2 AT&T before. But for the Bell Atrix hd we can access the menu and we can change the network settings. Look for the app NETWORK from playstore but im not sure if you can change the network settings.

I'm not sure if this will work with you, but I have an unlocked Bell Atrix HD on AT&T and I had similar problems at first. I was not getting any LTE even though there is LTE in my area.
I went to the AT&T store to tell them, this is what happened: When I first went there to get a micro SIM card (I had a regular SIM), they activated a new card, and put my AHD's IMEI number on my account. This allowed my phone to text, make phone calls, and connect to HSPA+, but no LTE. Well, since this phone is an unlocked version from another carrier, the IMEI number is not recognized by AT&T. So, the system didn't know that I had an LTE phone. So what they had to do was get a real IMEI number from an AHD that they had in the store, change the last number, and apply it to my account. This then activated the 4G LTE data plan for my phone.
I would try this.

[Q] Can Lumia 928 be used overseas ?

Hello all- I have not found a definitive answer so will post my question here as well. I have a chance to get a Lumia 928 (Verizon) but would like to know if I can use it in New Zealand with my Vodafone SIM. I am not sure if there will be limitations such as maps, etc.. not working.
Cheers for any help, LL13- :victory:
LTE will not work in any country besides the US. Aside from that the 928 shouldn't have any issues with taking a different SIM, as all 928s are SIM unlocked when they shipped from the factory. Before you leave though, I highly recommend you download access point via sysapp pusher in the marketplace/store. Sysapp will check for any and all OEM apps that need updating.

The one warning I would give you with the 928 is that the APN settings are a little messed up, and you may need to play around with it a bit to get them to work. My experience (using the 928 on AT&T and T-Mobile in the US) is that you need to manually set the APN settings, even when Nokia Access Point says that the SIM settings are activated. You can usually get data fine, but MMS's don't work properly if you don't manually set the APN
If possible, avoid doing it with Nokia Access Point, because if you do you will lose the ability to use LTE when you get back on Verizon until you do a hard reset (you can't recover the appropriate Verizon LTE APN settings - it will only connect to CDMA 3g). Now that GDR2 is out, you can seemingly manually set the APN's in the Cellular menu of settings, so try using that first and if it fails, copy the correct APN settings into a new Access Point APN, then manually activate it. This has fixed my issue every time, but again, necessitated a hard reset / wipe of the phone to use on Verizon's LTE network.
Cheers for that information AR...
I can enter those settings manually, I've got them memorised :silly:
Cheers again, LL13- :good:
Wow very confusing topic, I mean the process of finding out whether data/mms will work outside of Verizon US, it seems it can not. Too bad as it's a beauty of a phone.

Its not that quite confusing.
LTE is only good for the country it was released in. The international LTE bandplan is different for every country, none of them match up. For using a CDMA carrier, switching to them will require a SIM (there isn't any way to flash the settings onto the phone yet for those providers who don't yet have LTE without it being official from Nokia) so its kinda a dead end.
If your going to a GSM provider, just insert your SIM and manually add the settings for data and mms. You can use Access Point if you don't intend on using Verizon's LTE.

That makes me a bit more comfortable, cheers for that information thals1992 !!
It seems that the main issue would be with the LTE which would not be a problem since I am not even sure what it is !! I believe it may have to do with 4G or fast download speeds but there is no 4G in my town anyway.
I saw one post on another forum saying that some 928's had no way to add/edit APN settings, etc...
Each post and person seems to have a different experience, but if I can simply get a 3G data connection and normal use I would be happy.
I may just go for it then.

When you travel abroad and use the phone on a GSM carrier you will get data up to HSPA+, unless the carrier happens to share Verizons LTE band. The issue with Verizon LTE after you have used another APN is that Access Point won't deactivate all the APN settings, and since Verizon doesn't have dedicated APN data settings, it doesn't override properly and connect toVZW LTE properly without a hard reset.
The 928 has a CDMA radio as well as a fully unlocked GSM radio

a hard reset is required as the access point app changes the LTE settings and can't change it back completely.

Try limiting the connection to 3G or 2G. T-Mobile users reported this as a workaround.

[Q] is there a way to force LTE?

like my phone can just sit on 3G, in the same place, while not moving
but if i reboot my phone, it'll pop on to LTE (if its available in that area)
but i reboot it in known LTE areas (when showing 3G)
anyway to force LTE, without rebooting the phone?
or is there some time schedule where it checks to see if LTE is available that I can change?

Hahaha you're absolutely right. I knew just by reading the thread. Sprint is the worst! My HTC One on Sprint was amazing but I couldn't ever hold on to an LTE connection for more then 30 seconds. Unlimited data is useless if your only on their horribly slow 3g
Sprint does suck, if i didnt have 4 other people on my account that would have to get new phones/account etc, I would have been switched.
but that video i think was to turn on LTE, my LTE is on, but for some reason wouldnt search/connect to LTE when it was available all the time
however i went into my mobile connection settings, and changed it from "LTE/CDMA" to Global
now it seems to switch to LTE when its in an LTE area. LTE icon comes up without me having to reboot, i'll keep a watch on it for a few days to see if indeed that was the solution
by the way, anybody now what the "global" option is? compared to LTE/CDMA

I'm pretty sure the global setting is to allow it to connect to GSM carriers in the event that the device is unlocked and the APN is changed accordingly.
I have the same problem in brazil, looks like a problem with the Phone. I had a Samsung S4 that worked with full signal in 4G in my home, now that I moved to LG G Flex it also works full signal 4G in home, but when I move to some place where is Edge then go Back to home, it never moves back to LTE automatically. I need to restart or change the NetworkMode manually to make it back working in 4G.
I think the phone has a problem to automatic search and change the Network mode.
anyone know how to enable only lte yet? i've tried all different kinds of secret menu codes and cant figure it out.
Answer
How to access the hidden service menu on LG G Flex:
For AT&T: Go to dialer and enter 3845#*950#
For T-Mobile: Go to dialer and enter 3845#*959#
For Sprint: Go to dialer and enter 3845#*995#
Once you're in the hidden menu, go to LTE-Only > Modem Settings > RAT Selection > LTE only
Enjoy!
