Yes, this sounds like a stupid issue, but I find it incredibly bizarre. I'm not really tech-savvy, especially with phone hardware, and I've searched through the forums for any possible answers with no luck.
My Note is actually the Korean LTE, SHV-E160K, running stock ICS 4.0.3. I have not rooted it or done anything to the phone. My current service provider is Straigh Talk, on the AT&T network. My issue is, I can not get my Note to connect to the ST network while I'm in TEXAS. The phone works perfectly while I'm in California. I've tried countless solutions that I found online, with no dice.
One person told me that it might possible be the ST Network, but the sim in question works with my old unlocked G2 in both Texas and California. So I'm thinking it's the Note that's the issue, but I can't figure out what. I'm going absolutely crazy, and with my limited understanding of phones, I can't think of what else to do.
Any phone-savvy people know what's wrong? Please let me know if I can provide any more info!
ok, check imei if its intact, dial *#06# should be the same as on the box or label below battery. If not it could be blocked. You need samsung to fix it. Or restore an efs backup.
Next to this, check if apn settings are as specified by provider. Go to settings, more, then mobile networks then acces point names. These on some providers can be pushed throught website. Most likely settings are on their website to set manually. sometimes you need to delete(need root) apn and then setup again. I read instances of that.
If provider is not active in the country you are in, then you might need to set it to connect to your preffered network. do that also from mobile networks. Check this anyway.
Next to this Gnote does not have all bands capability, if in a country that provides on band frequency that note does not support you lose connectivity.
You can also check airplane mode on of. Select packet data on of, just data on off. Just to test.
Be carefull with roaming option in settings, cause that allows you to register on different then providers network, you can incur additional roaming costs.
As you see a pletora of possibilities, let me know if it worked, or if you need more info, pm me

Hello all,
I have searched these forums high and low, but could not find a solution to my problem. I have a Kaiser which I use on the Canadian provider Fido. Since late 2004, Fido is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rogers, another Canadian wireless provider. Fido and Rogers now share one same network: Rogers'. My problem is that my Kaiser, having a Fido SIM in it, seems to always think it is roaming because it is connecting to the Rogers network. This causes me a problem since I cannot tell my phone to only download when on my home network, otherwise I would never be able to download anything (since I am always roaming). If I tell my phone to download even when roaming, I cannot control my usage when I actually am roaming in another country. I know there must be some kind of setting somewhere that I can adjust to make my phone think it is not roaming while connected to Rogers' network, I just don't know what it is. No matter what ROM I try, I can't get rid of that pesky "roaming triangle"! My gf's phone, a Samsung Jack, does not think it is forever roaming, so I know it is possible.
Does anyone have any insight on this?
Thanks in advance!
Dom
Hello there.
I have used my kaiser with Saudi Sim card, Lebanese Sim card, Jordanian Sim card and now FIDO sim card. Ive always had this triangle and has never affected my data plan.

Me too, I even had my roaming turned off by Fido for some time and the triangle was still there.
Thanks for the input, guys. I know that the roaming icon will not prevent me from accessing 3G data. What it does prevent me from doing, though, is differentiating between "real" roaming (i.e. in another country) and "fake" roaming (i.e. on the Rogers network). As it stands, all settings which can be set to "use 3G data only when not roaming" are ineffective as I would never be able to download anything if they were enabled.
I hope that clears things up. And I hope that someone smarter than I am has a solution for this problem.
Thanks again!
Hello, I have the exact same phone on the exact same fido network and have the roaming triangle as well. It does not affect your data/voice plan at all. (ie. if you are in the Canada, you will not be charged for roaming). This is all explained in the following link:
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=837503
Essentially the gist of it is that you are "roaming" on the rogers network, but since they are the same company, it doesn't matter or affect any of your plans. I have used my 6GB data plan from Fido with no extra charges.
It does effect some programs that do provide options for disabling web traffic when roaming (ie. hotmail push e-mail from windows live) as these programs will always think you are on another network.
What I have done is, predominantly, I use my wifi connection where available and have turned off all the "disabling traffic when roaming" options in various apps. Then in the fido internet (3G;GPRS) settings, I did not include the password. What this does is that when I connect to the internet without wifi it asks me for my password which I then enter to connect. Definitely mildly inconvenient, but prevents me from 'accidentally' connecting to the internet when in the US.
Thanks ibhimani.
I have taken similar measures to prevent roaming fees, but I use MoDaCo's NODATA app, instead. Basically, it allows me to completely turn off all cellular data connections (WiFi remains intact) while I am away.
Still, I don't think this is a real solution; it is a workaround at best. I know there is a way to force the phone to recognize the Rogers network as a "Home" network since my gf's Samsung Jack does not claim to be roaming at all times. I will try to look through the registry on the Jack to see if there is some setting I can tweak to achieve the desired effect. I'll let you all know if I find something.
That would be great. Thanks in advance.
No luck!
Hi all,
After a little research in the registry of my gf's Samsung Jack, I've found that the way the network is handled on it is different than on our HTC. The Samsung uses something called MITSMan.exe (Mobile Intelligent Terminal by Samsung Manager) which can identify the network correctly on her phone, but not on ours. Unfortunately, this is not reusable for us. The search continues. Hopefully, a WinMo HTC device will launch on Fido sometime soon so I can reuse something from it.
If I find anything else, I'll post it here.
I have a Nokia e62 and the Samsung Jack from Fido. Both these phones do not show the roaming icon. Must be some sort of custom firmware brewed for Fido by the manufacturers.
BTW - I am now using a Samsung Omnia II. This shows roaming too.

Hi hameedx,
With a Samsung Omnia II, you may be able to make a change to the registry to make it think you're on the home network, if it works like the Samsung Jack. On your Jack, search through the registry for something called MITSman. There should be a value corresponding to Fido's carrier code (MNC-MCC), which is 302-370 (or 302-720, which is Rogers'). It may actually be easier to search for these values. If the Omnia also uses MITSman, then you might be able to make the registry entries on it look like the ones on the Jack. If you need more detail about the registry entries, I could get them when I have access to a Jack again.
I searched the Jack's registry for anything with 302 720 370 72 37. Couldn't find any meaningful entry. Perhaps it is a DLL that we need to replace?
I believe that the Fido Samsung Jack has roaming indicator disabled completely. I used a Telus SIM in the Jack and does not show roaming. The Telus SIM shows roaming when I put it in other unlocked phones.
I've recently shifted to another country,
Used my o2 SIM for a day or two and obviously phone showed as Roaming, with the little "R"..
I've now bought a local SIM card and installed and running on a local Provider, yet the phone still shows as Roaming and Data does not work unless I allow Data connection while roaming...
Is this a bug or something?
I should state I've been in a different country recently and also used a local SIM from there and I never had this issue at all... I saw the local provider when using their SIM, Now, I use a local SIM and this still shows an "R" on my signal.. Same with my girlfriends phone...
Any ideas?
Edit: I'm on a N/W unlocked phone..

In my country there were 2 networks, and when a third network started it's business, it was using the infrastructure of one of the existing networks. The phones that were using Sim cards of the third network, all showed that they were in roaming, and if they wanted to use data, they needed to enable "data while roaming" options. Of course, they were never billed for roaming charges. Now this third network has it's own infrastructure, and the roaming sign is a thing of the past.
Maybe this is the case with you too.
I would try to contact the local network provider, to seek the answer you are looking for.

I get this in Thailand because my provider has different names/IDs for the 3G and 2G networks.
The 3G is called "True-H" and the 2G "True Move", or something like that.
The SIM will automatically register on both networks, but if it connects to the 2G network I get the roaming symbol.
The solution is either to enable roaming data (I don't get charged any extra, but need to remember to disable it if I travel), or set my movie network to WCDMA only. This way it won't connect to the 2G network.

Check if you got roaming allowed and switch it of.
Register if needed handset on your network manually.
You might not have the network where you are due to availability area coverage.
Check your apn settings, if they are on the mobile network you need and settings are correct. Perhaps from website provider, or helpdesk you can request them to send settings.
Go to settings, more, mobile networks and check there. Just explore a bit.

Cheers for the replies,
I'd already checked those areas out, APN is correct, Settings from Provider received and installed, Manually selected provider from the Network list...
Still showing 'R' - AS has been said 0 I'll just have to enable Data when Roaming and turn it off when I travel..
which service provider do you use and phone model do you use?
this phenomenon normally happen in new telco on some phone model
Hello Team,
i purchased a unlocked HTC one and i use a AT&T gophone sim card. i am not able to get the LTE signals so i would like to know is the phone capable or its an issue.

This happened to me a few months ago. The phone is definitely capable and you will get LTE signals on the $60/month GoPhone plan.
1. First of all, call GoPhone customer support (611 from the phone) and confirm that they have your HTC One whitelisted for LTE. They're going to double check with you your phone's IMEI number (they can already see it, but will ask you for it anyway), and then confirmed that the phone is allowed to get LTE signals. They're also going to double check your APN setting and provide you with the appropriate entries for AT&T.
2. Reboot and see if you now get LTE signals. If you still don't get it, check whether your mobile network settings is set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto instead of GSM/WCDMA Auto or WCDMA Preferred (or maybe something else). If you don't see any LTE option, dial *#*#4636#*#* from your dialer, and in the first drop down box choose 'GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto' or anything with LTE just to make sure you can catch LTE signals at all. If you were able to find and switch to the setting you want, exit out, and go back to that menu, double checking if the setting sticks. If it does, reboot and try again.
3. Most people will get LTE signals after #1 above, while some were only able to get it after #2. However if you are unlucky like me, the LTE setting does not show up in mobile network and no matter what I do in the hidden menu, the setting won't stick (it's stuck on GSM/WCDMA Auto). I actually tried flashing a different radio at this point (a newer AT&T radio), but still... no LTE for me. What solved this finally for me is that I flashed a custom ROM (in my case it was ARHD 12.2). This enabled me to choose GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto under mobile network settings, and after that I was able to get LTE. It was great! :good:
Hopefully that helps. Good luck!
Hi. I live in Europe, I was jealous of you guys, so I ordered Moto on ebay. To save some cash, I ordered locked AT&T version. Everything went great, I was able to unlock the phone, it accepted the sim card, I can make calls and send SMS. So far, so good.
Then I turned on mobile data. And...nothing happend.
To clarify: Using the same sim card, I was able to use mobile data on good old Samsung i9000, so the data is activated. It's there and should work.
So I started looking around in settings, tried turning on the data roaming and looked into the "about phone" section.
Here's what it says:
Mobile Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Not roaming
Mobile Network State: Disconnected
Is there something I need to do to "force" the connection, or should I rather discuss this with my mobile network provider?
Thanks for any help
P.S. I tried the usual stuff like reboot and eject sim and put it back, I even switched from ART back to Dalvik, The phone is running latest avaliable KitKat and is not rooted.

You didn't mention whether you checked the APN settings. My guess is that because you purchased a locked AT&T device and then unlocked it, you don't have an APN setup for your European provider. APN will be in Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks ->Access Point Names. If you go in there and either there is nothing listed or it's not the APN your mobile provider recommends, you will need to manually create the proper APN. I'm sure a quick Google Search for your provider's APN settings on Android will get you the answer.

I knew I was missing something important "Copied" the APN settings from old phone and it worked like charm. Thanks a lot
Interesting thing is that on that old Samsung, I tried new ROM every month or so and never had this problem. The phone just "knew" what to do. Guess these are the perks of unlocked devices, right?

Glad that worked. Correct, Custom ROM's often self-provision based on a database of Carrier/APN's.
Hello,
My note 8 cannot connect to mobile data. Whenever I activate it, nothing happens I don't get any mobile data signal what so ever. I also checked the APN's configuration with my Mobile carrier and they were unable to solve it.
It should be noted that my note 8 has a stock Canadian firmware and I am using in Morocco with a Moroccan sim card

did you check with your morocco sim does include data from your plan? Also which carrier are you using in Moroccan? it could be either your plan doesn't include data plan or the carrier doesn't have the UMT/LTE band for your note 8

Yes, I still have around 1gig of data available and My plan includes data.
My service provider is INWI and they do have LTE band since The same sim card worked on my previous J5 2016 normally.
I forgot to mention that, After activating mobile data and roaming, I checked the sim status in the setting where I found that Mobile network state is DISCONNECTED and Roaming is not running.

Can you test if you can make call or text? if so, i will suggest double check the apn. I checked your carrier in Morocco , you should be able to get HSPA data connection in Canadian Version Note 8(N950W) unless you select (LTE ONLY).

I can confirm that I can make phone calls and send texts without a problem.
I checked all options and none worked .
As for the apn, the configuration message was sent to me by my service provider itself.
I performed a factory reset that didn't help too.
Since you can make the call, I don't think it is something wrong with the phone. I checked there's only 1 hspa band and none for lte available for note 8 from your carrier. I guess either double check with the carrier for the apn or maybe the phone just can't pick the b1 hspa signal from your location.

I won't mind HSPA since there's not much difference between LTE and HSPA in Morocco. I doubled checked with my carrier today and they told me that I have to wait for 48H for them to look into the issue.
The weird thing is when I used an app called LTE Discovery I found that I do have a signal for LTE band 3 yet I have no internet.
It is mostly the service provider's fault, I think.

They might be similar to AT &T where they need to recognize the device IMEI number before allowing full data access onto their Network.

I checked with my service provider. Unfortunately, they don't need to recognize the IMEI number.
They tried to shift the blame to my phone saying that I might have a faulty device. It doesn't make any sense.

First thing I'd do is research and see if it's true what your service provider told you. It might not be. Second use another sim from another network in your device. Third borrow someone else's IMWI sim and use it in the note 8. Also check APN again.
Did the phone receive 4G or LTE prior to coming to Morocco with the same device?
I also don't fully understand on your earlier post about the phone status not being roaming. It shouldn't be roaming status if using a local sim card.

I still haven't tried another INWI nor another Moroccan sim card.
I have no idea whether or not it received 4G Before coming to Morocco since I won the phone from a Dbrand's giveaway. I think it's brand new.
Shouldn't roaming be active when you activate it in menu ?
I turned on mobile data roaming and nothing happens. Check the picture for details.
I turned off my Data Roaming and the Mobile network state remained the same - connected. I'd think " Mobile network state " has anything to do with roaming being on or off unless one is roaming out of their Network onto another network.

I turn them on and off yet their status remain disconnected. I understand why.
I really don't understand how to get mobile data working on my phone.
Hopefully someone else will try and assist.
In the meantime
On the phone dialer enter *#0011# and *#2263#
Also, the mobile network state will be disconnected if you are connected to WiFi.
Should get the following screen.
Also make sure that the correct APN is entered and active / selected.
Then try and go to the connections menu and toggle lte/3g/2g... to 2 or 3 g and back to to 4g to see what happens.
Also make sure Mobile Data is turned ON.
Go-to settings then search for Mobile Data.

That's weird as when I checked Frequency check website with device sm-n950W and your service provider INWI , it lists it as fully compatible. The other Moroccan networks were not though.
This would be the second instant whereby Frequency check has got it wrong. First being Samsung device I used to own.

I checked the frequency myself and I came to the same conclusion.
I was only told today by an INWI agent that devices from Canada and USA always face the same issue.
I triend orange which didn't work too. Gladly, IAM worked as it is the largest and oldest network in Morocco.
From now on, I won't believe what websites say till I see for myself.
