Odin and it's respective files - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone explain to me what each of the file slots are meant for on Odin and which go where?
Sometime's I'll read "flash this kernel" or "use these boot loaders" and the file doesn't have a .pit or .pda to give an idea where to put each file.

Odin filees are in .tar or .tar.md5 format. Usually just use PDA PIT is if you partition with ODIN (Partition Information Table).

usually if you read the post it will tell you which slot. if its a kernel it is MOST LIKELY PDA

That's why I'm asking sometimes it's not in the post.
So Kernals usually go in the PDA slots.
What about boot loaders?
What's the .PIT file?
I guess I'm confused because you'll get a post with 4 files all with .rar or .md5 extensions and I have no clue where to put them. It might say boot loader on it but where does that go?

[Q] cant find correct pit/tar files for odin

I'm trying to use full odin(1.7) to go back to stock an at&t captivate. I've used odin one click before without a problem, but i would like to do this with the full version of odin. I watched the tutorial video from the stickies in this forum.
I downloaded an odin+pit file I found here on xda. odin recognizes my phone, but when i go to pit I have three pit file choices(S1_odin_20100512.pit, S1_odin_20100513.pit, S1_odin_20100512.pit) and no matter which one I click, I cant find a rar file when I click pda.
I've now downloaded a couple of different rar files: I897UCJH7.rar, and I897UCJH2.rar
I dont know which one to use, or even if I'm choosing the right pit file.
You have to unrar them first... The .pit and .tar should be in there.
A nice easy way to do this is explained in: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143

Can't flash Overcome v4.0.0 tar

Hi and thanks in advance for your help! I have searched high and low for the answer. I have flashed "VERSION 5 of the Gingerbread-based stock-safe file " also the right pit file and modem. That flashes flawlessly. I boot the tab, transfer the ROM to internal sd card root and put the tab back into download mode. I then put the 002001-Overcome_Kernel_v4.0.0.tar in the pda section and make sure re-partition is not checked - this fails every time and then I have to flash the stock-safe file again to boot (I get the computer and phone logo). Does anyone have any ideas?
Exact same thing here too. I have flashed previous Overcome versions before without issue :-S
I have read that kernel 3.3.1 will work, but I can't find any live download links.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda premium
Found that out too, luckily I have a copy of it and am attaching it. After this I flashed the rest of the files through Recovery which you access by holding volume up + power.
Thank you for this! You saved my bacon. Surely there are others with the same issue.

No problemo
Hi All,
I faced same problem, you need to re-download 002001-Overcome_Kernel_v4.0.0.tar due to the bad download and check the right file size
Thanks Overcome Team

Hi all...
Same problem with me.
I have trouble when flash the overcome kernel v.4.0 using CMW recovery.....also using Odin v.1.85.
But it solve when I flash it using Odin v.1.7.
Sound rather strange, but it works.

Thanks for the info, what should the correct file size be?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using xda premium
file size is 4.690KB

Update Possible Solution
The download from the "Mizmo" mirror appears to be corrupt. It is only 4679kB.(MD5 hash D498624F1246BE59F77B96C37D62A5B1)
After about 10 re-tries, I got a mirror called "toe.toofickle" which served a file of 4690kB. (MD5 hash 9AE7329EF734719615C021E033762E6B)
I will re-try the kerneel flash via Odin using the new tar file.
(If it also fails, I will try the 3.3.1 version posted above.)
(Original answer to this at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18975791&postcount=307 )
UPDATE VERIFIED Solution
For me, at least:
Everything went flawless after getting the un-corrupted kernel file.
If you see this, alterbridge86, please get a re-sync at Mizmo's mirror. I lost 2 days and a lot of hair to this.
i just came from the previous version just installed the no wipe version and it was all good.
I had the same problem - thanks for the solution.
A working mirror is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?g8j13sn9o3ghi9f
Hi,
the archive is not corrupted...
FLashing the kernel dont work because alterbridge86 have made a mistake.
The archive have to be plain tar file.
The file posted on the website is a tar.gz file.
You have to uncompress it ( to gunzip it) and to leave the kernel as tar file;

What does "N extract" and "N Flash" mean? Do you mean "AND extract" and "AND flash"?
If I am misunderstanding you or something then I apologize but if you are meaning to say the word "AND" when you use the letter "N" then please use proper grammar as it is quite confusing.
Thanks...

Just chill, Jesus.
Not everybody here is an English native speaker!
Don't be rude!
I also flashed the latest Kies-able Firmware and lost cwm due to the fact, that I can't inject the cwm with mobile odin pro. It's not like your tutorial (dr.ketan) cos where to get the cwm file you mentioned in there?
You can't extract anything from inside the zImage.
So you have to get the appropriate cf-root kernel,
extract the zImage (with winrar/winzip),
copy it (external or internal sdcard) and
use mobile odin pro ("Open file...", point to the zImage-location) to flash it.
Mobile odin pro checks the file and automatically set it as kernel.
You should check your CSC, cos flashing a multi-CSC is setting it to KOR
(means no kies-kompatibility/-updates).
Use the *2767*4387264636# to display, and *272*IMEI* to change it to your wanted CSC
(this will do a factory reset)!

Try with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/SD_card_partitioning
Know that you will lose its data, but anyway you can't reach it now...
P.S. I misunderstood, you can't reach internal storage. Try to format it in settings->storage->partition. Or simply change ROM before anything.

Sorry, seems XDA does not allow *.pit extension to be uploaded. You need to unzip it first.
Yes, you needed to flash Stock 4.1.2 in first place.
,
P.S. I needed to put some random image in zip, it did not allow me to upload that small file on XDA... Just ignore it.

Oh, that was fast. Thank you. The reason I ask is because the only way the md5 checks out is by removing the.md5 from the file name. I'm new here, and don't see how to send screenshots of the md5 check.
Select AP???
Now, under step 4 it says to select AP and find the tar file, which I'm guessing he means tar.md5 file because thats the file he linked to. But I do not see where to select AP. I can chose PIT, Bootloader, PDA, PHONE, or CSC in Odin 3.07. I see where I can check dump and there's a AP RAM selection box. I wish I could ask in the thread, but new members can't post in development threads.
@jackeagle or anyone who knows....please fill me in here.
I've apparently met the minimum post requirement so I was able to post in the thread and ask about it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...recovery-qualcomm-twrp-2-8-7-0-t3245256/page4
I got it done by the way. WOOHOO!! I'm now rooted, TWRPed, backed up and Busybox installed!!
