Rom Porting - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if somebody could point me in the direction of learning how to port system dumps from other phones to a rom for the Hero CDMA, or any phone for that matter.

[REQ] Android 2.3 with Sense 2.1 Wildfire S ROM

Hello everyone, not sure if any of the devs have seen this already, i didn't see anyone pick it up or talk about it

i know its GSM and all but who knows maybe someone can get the ball rolling.
Thanks
So, I'll attemp civility. First out of curiosity none of the phones in your sig indicate a sprint hero cdma, even your carrier shows T-mo. Second, you shouldn't be posting request in the dev section, seeing as how you haven't dev'd anything. Third, WTF, you want someone to port a 2.3 based sense rom, lmao, we don't even have a fully functioning 2.2 sense rom.
While we're at it, where can I get a honeycomb rom w/sense?

il Duce, whatever happened to that rom that printed money?

Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Gingerbread-on-Hero action here!

well to stay civil as well without any profanity my sig shows MetroPCS because XDA doesn't have it in the list of carriers and i had tmobile before.
i do have a hero but i don't use it since the usb port broke and i wanted at least froyo with sense fully operational but even then haven't really found a rom to meet my needs and likes. sue me for not updating my sig to show every device i own, i have drawer full of phones, i just don't feel the need to put them on there.
and since there is something newer why not at least look at it to see if it's a better alternative. if the whole world thinks like you seem to think then we would still be living in caves, no offense and don't take it the wrong way but that's life, gota always be thinking out of the box
Before this gets out of control, I just want to say that yes, people tend to get upset over these things, but for good reason. You can't just expect some devs to pull a Sense Gingerbread out of a hat - that's unreasonable and just annoying.
With that said, I have a feeling that this guy meant it more as a polite, respectful request. He probably just wanted to tell everyone that Sense gingerbread is out, and if someone is ready to port it, it's out there - and I can understand that. Give him the benefit of the doubt.
If anyone out there is left with a Hero who can do this, I'd be elated if they'd port this ROM over, and I'm sure a lot of others would be, too.
Just don't ask for it like it's an entitlement.

I was thinking about that doesn't seem that bad of an idea

Beginning Dev

So my first ever android phone was a Droid Eris that was declared dead by Verizon after only 8 months of the phone being on the network. The devs created Rom after Rom of both Froyo and Gingerbread for a device that was said to never move past Eclair. There developments always sparked interest in to create my own rom and to get deeper into android, but no one was able to point me in the correct direction of where to start. So now having a device like the Bionic I would like to start creating roms. So the question is: Where do I begin
Also if this is the wrong place to ask this please move it.

Start small. Do some theming and learn what programs you can use to modify apk files. I use a mac to do all of my work. Some programs I use are better zip, springy (which are 7zip equivalent), figure out how to use apktool, there are several guides on how to use this. If you need help, let me know.
When theming, there are three or four apk files that you may want to start with.
-SystemUI.apk
-framework-res.apk
-moto-res.apk
-blur-res.apk
These files will hold the status bar images and files, all of the background colors, highlight colors, etc.
You can use one of the zip programs mentioned above to change the icons and pictures, and use apktool for text colors and things like that. Just start poking around and see what you can find.
Once you get a grasp on that, start tweaking and changing things and put it into a rom i guess lol. You will need to look at the updater.script and learn how to use them inside of roms...if you need help with this after actually opening it and reading it, feel free to ask.
I should also mention, you should probably be theming a deodexed rom. So do a little research and learn how to deodex your phone...its not too bad.
Hope this sends ya in the right direction and once again, please feel free to ask anything.
Yes, I agree.. Start small, like themes and mods fotr other ROM's.. learn how things work at a basic level... then maybe look to join a team where you can learn from someone else..
You will also need the Android SDK so you can use the draw9patch for certain images.
Am I wrong here or is the dude trying to make a ROM, not a theme? Never made a ROM so i dont know. Guessing theres a lot more for for him than us themers.
You need to learn to walk before you run. Also I have android sdk on my computer but it is messed up.
Thank you for the replies. I have a couple theme ideas

any roms?

I know this phone is discontinued and its not the most popular phone. But overall still a good phone. With having stock android under Facebook home shouldn't there be alot of stock android roms? Are there any devs out there still working on this? Would glad to see more progress on this device

You hit your own nail on the head.
If a phone does not sell a lot and is discontinued and is not popular, it well not get development. It's kind of a natural law of the universe, right up there with gravity and the three laws of thermodynamics.
Why not learn Android development yourself? You can visit the XDA University forum and learn all about developing your very own custom ROMs

Lmao "natural law of the universe" its a cell phone for crying out loud. I never said I wanted to learn on android development. There is 1 ROM for this device so obviously it had a start of development. But when someone takes things way to seriously over a simple answer can fix then you have issues. It went from asking if there will be more development to gravity, laws, and universe.. lmao wow
Don't be so hostile, I am a avid HTC owner. And my girl has the HTC first. Just because there is a stock android interface doesn't mean it's easily changed to different versions. I started out a year ago modding on my HTC one x, and now I'm modifying stock roms into my cleanstrip Rom. It's a stock clean Rom with build prop tweaks and maybe doodads here and there. It's not hard to do some changes to Roms. Just takes a good mind and attention to read.
There are lots of guides to make roms, it shouldn't be to hard to follow most of them to cook up what you want.
What are you looking for in a Rom ? I'm wanting a sense 5 HTC one x newest 4.2.2 based Rom, for the first but I have no means or know how on porting sense.

Dev related question.

Hey devs and gals... I feel like i'm new with HTC again since I've been a Samsung user for the last few years. Yet I decided to get an M8 and Sprint gave me a good deal with HKE...
So me having experience with rom and theming development for GSM Samsung phones yet I feel like a totally noob here with HTC and specially with it being CDMA network...
I did a lot of roms porting back in the day for Samsung phones too.. Again I would like to ask devs if they won't mind add me to their team or individual dev to help me out on refreshing my mind about how things work for HTC and CDMA network so I/we can start rom development.
101 views and no answer? Are y'all not interested?
Sorry I'm not a dev but thanks for offering your help

I do this for fun.. However when I used to be a Samsung user devs seems more friendly, we were like a big forum family lol.
We would help each other out.. It was not like who did it first or to each its own.
Maybe that is why this forum is like dead pretty much. There is no lots of devs an they dont seem to care or help anyone else.
If this was like on Samsung forum we would have a SENSE/LP rom up and running a long time ago.
I'm personally trying to get it to work for me. But being new to CDMA I have no idea how it works. But will get there eventually.
What exactly are you trying to figure out? You seemed a bit general in the post [emoji14]

All the devs that I'm in regular communication with are open to helping, but not giving hand outs, I was accepted by TensaiLabs based on what I was trying to do and the very specific questions that I asked. That being said I haven't dove into porting too much so I'm not much help but from what I know and what little help I was with the sense 6 port for the LTE you have to edit build.prop, change libs, and add in sprint files and boot.img

[Q] help with kernel installation please sprint htc one m8
