For the last few hours, the touchscreen of my Milestone is acting very erratically. When I turn the phone on, it works for a few seconds (sometimes minutes) and then suddenly stops working. And then when I turn off the screen and turn on again after a while, it again works for a while.
And when it stops working, sometimes it totally fails to register any tap, sometimes it has ghost touch and sometimes it registers a tap when I press very strongly. I have noticed that the problem mainly occurs in the right side of the screen. And the soft touch buttons at the bottom are affected as well.
Is my phone done? Pls help me. I really cannot afford to buy another phone at this time.. PLS help!!
Ok, since no one seems interested, I better post an update myself. I did some searching and found some info. One of the probable causes could be moisture getting into the digitiser. Although it didn't rain today, it was pretty hot and I sweated a lot, so it is possible that the sweat somehow got into it.
So heres the solution I am trying now. I pulled the battery, sim and MicroSd, opened the keyboard and put the whole thing in an airtight bag of PUFFED rice( they are much better dehumidifiers than uncooked rice). Lets see what happens after a few hours.. Wish me luck...
This is surely the problem dude... humidity to digitizer.
Happened to me too... what i did was pull everything off and applied cold hair drier for 5 min.
For me worked like a charm.

Ok, so the phone was in the bag of puffed rice for the whole of the night. I put everything back and turned it on, and it seems to be working now. Thank God! Hope the problem doesn't resurface..

Actually the easier way is to just buy the digitizer from ebay, and replace it yourself

Be interested in what your definition of easier is Puffed rice is Rice Bubbles, a breakfast cereal. You can also just use plain rice, the idea is that it will create a dry environment and absorb any moisture. You can actually put the rice in the fridge as well, its actually a very dry environment as well. My daughter dropped a phone into a lake once, stayed in the water for about 10 minutes (was flashing strange lights and vibration from being shorted). Wasn't working when she showed it to me a day later, we put it in a bowl of rice in the fridge a day later, she thought I was slightly insane but it actually worked after that!
had the same issue too , screen was acting very strange...like taking the worng command or not calibrated,or like...someoneelse playing on the screen like a mad man...after cleaning the display problem not solved...thought was the digitizer but...voila...before ordering one,just thought about making a hard reset cause the software was actig quite slow lately and voila...problem solved...so...if it's not the moisture ...it's the software......or at least in my case ... make a backup on your sd card,and do a software reset..if after that still doesn't work,you know for sure u need a replacement part

I have the same issue, i will try using the rice/salt bag to dry it out, but i think my problem is the motherbord cable ribbon... anyone replaced it with success?

recently i bought an htc tytn II
but on a rainny day, i was on motocycle, and my kaiser was literally in water!
when arrive at home i dry it and dissassembled it to ensure that i dont have any water!
my kaiser turns on fine and all, but the problems are there, like:
when kaiser turned on: 1 - i cannot connect with pc, 2 - i cannot charge it! 3 - my keyboard, just 3 keys work(i'm coming from replacing it)!
do you have one idea what problems it is?

Yes - I have an idea as to what the problem is - it was not designed to work under water.
Suggest that you search for water and drying out as other people have had issues like this and there are several threads on what to do and how to dry out your phone.

Hello, bummer it got wet. if the 3 problems listed did not exist before it got wet, if safe to say the problems are a result of getting wet. i know, duh. if soft reset or turning the phone completly off does not fix, the only thing i can say to do is perform a hard reset, of course back up all you important data. i know nobody like to hear that.

Did you find the threads that talk about hair dryers, rice etc to "dry out" the phone?

So in other words, you were using it before it dried out. Most electronics can handle getting wet so long as they are dried out and any participate is cleared out of it first. If it's salt water, it must be very well cleaned. If it's dirty water, it's also suggested to clean. Typical rain water probably would not be a problem.
But it still must be completely dry before attempting to turn it back on. And regardless, the battery might be shot.
My guess is you were using it when it was still wet.

Yep, exactly. Sounds like a classic case of someone getting too eager to see if it still works before LETTING IT COMPLETELY DRY. Something was probably still wet and shorted out.
Hi All,
Unfortunately my other half has managed to, quite accidentally, spill orange squash onto my X1.
The phone still works except for the buttons on the front of the device, ie the panel button, and the directional button.
They respond but do not do what they are supposed too. For example, pressing right on the directional pad seems to bring up the phone app, left doesn't appear to do anything.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I have left the device to dry out in the airing cupboard over night and I am hoping that when I get back in from work it will (magically) be working again.
You shouldn't have used it after the spillage.
The right steps are too turn it off, remove the battery, let it dry for a couple of days and then turn it on.
I don't know what the effects would be in your case...
P.S. It wasn't accidental. Trust me.
well orange juice is sticky, but i once "stepped" into a small pond and everything from my belly downwards stood underwater for about 3-4 sec. including my X1 in my pocket.
i exitedly turned it on, though i knew i shouldn't do that and I saw a load of colours and it tried to boot but got stuck.
well i thought it was ****ed up and already searched for a new mobile. but then after 2-3 days it recovered. first it booted, but the touchscreen was still broken. then everything recovered, even my battery still works perfectly.
my 2 "water indicators" inside my phone and battery are red now

Sorry for the OT, but where exactly are the water indicators? Have only been able to find the battery one.
Ah bugger, I have taken it back to O2 today and they have sent it off for repair.
I claimed I knew nothing about why it failed.
Oh well, it should be covered under my insurance if need be. (Well it better bloody be, I have had it long enough with nary a claim to my name)

Hello all (first post here) I had a water spillage on my x1 and after looking for advice i came across something that worked. half Fill a bowl with uncooked rice and put the x1 in to the rice( take out the battery first). then poor more rice on the top of the phone. the rice will absorbe the moisture from the phone and this should help the phone to dry out. tried it with mine and it worked. everything was working fine but the m button on the keyboard. since then i took the phone apart and cleaned the keyboard and its back working fine. hope this helps or if not has made people laugh as it sounds so stupid it may just work as i did for me!

Actually, using rice is not a stupid idea - at all!
It is known to absorb moisture, go ahead and ask your grandmother (if you still have one), in the old days, when silicagel and the sorts didn't exist yet, a bowl of rice in the basement made sure that it wouldn't become too moist. Still works today, ofcourse.
Another thing you can try if the unit remains defective after cleaning it up a bit - buy some distilled water (at a hardware store or something).
Distilled water consists of H20 (yes, the real deal) for about 99.9% (depending on brand and quality). This means that harmful minerals like Kalium and Natrium will not be in it, meaning it can't cause electrical damage. If you use it carefully, you can rinse your device with it, dissolving any residual stickyness/salt etc inside.
Do take into account that - if not done properly - you might just move the crap from one place in your phone to the other, making things worse.
Just an idea!
NOTE: THIS SOLUTION IS POTENTIALLY DAMAGING AND MAY NOT WORK FOR EVERYONE
PROBLEM: touch screen acts erratic, notification bar keeps opening, screen appears to be touched by someone else continuously (Ghost Touch), and parts of the screen DO NOT RESPOND TO TOUCH.
MY OWN SPECIFIC CASE: I had the Ghost Touch issue for 3 days suddenly without intro, which often used to go away after a reboot or two, then phone worked normally after I removed the battery and left it in a dry area (in a closed drawer between books, no air entering, very dry atmosphere), however the RIGHT SIDE of the screen (Search button, rightmost letters [L and Delete and sometimes ENTER] do not work. If the phone is in normal landscape, you cannot open the notification bar by dragging it normally.
DIAGNOSIS: for some people, the problem is more severe. The Digitiser itself could be malfunctioning and has to be fixed, while for others it could be a true problem with the screen itself. However, for MANY OF US, it is a problem of HUMIDITY. The humidity sensors are causing the phone to act like that. Some say part of this problem happens because the way the keypad affects the phone internally as you open and close it a lot.
SOLUTIONS:
1- To be safe: send the phone to the shop. Ask them to open the phone and apply an extra layer of insulation, in case the digitiser and the screen are okay.
2- If something is faulty, replace it at the shop.
3- MY OWN SOLUTION: based on something I read many times, the solution was to apply DRY HEAT for at least 45 mins. What I did, based on averaging out many experiences I read online, was to remove the SD Card and SIM, remove battery, I heated up a toaster oven for 10 minutes, waited until the temperature was at about 60-70 degrees Celsius, SHUT DOWN THE HEAT, put the phone on its screen on a plate, screen facing down and covered by a cloth to protect it from direct contact with metal, then all inside the oven. The oven is a relatively big one, so phone was AWAY FROM A SOURCE OF DIRECT HEAT. I closed the lid, then every while 15 minutes I would heat the oven for 40 seconds to maintain the temp. This is LIKE (ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION) leaving your phone in the glove compartment of your car while its parked in a sunny spot, to find it really hot in the morning and tough to touch for a while. TO CONTINUE, after the phone was out of the oven (I can't believe I am saying this), I left the phone overnight in a dry area for 8 hours (could need less time). Then, I put everything back in, plugged it, and THE PHONE IS WORKING PERFECTLY NOW!
NOTE that solution number 3 could affect your keyboard buttons if heat is too much. It may cause the glue holding the keys to melt a bit. Be delicate with your keyboard after you restore your phone.
Again, I only did this YESTERDAY. With the exception of some keypad stickiness, the phone is working perfectly now.

SECOND EDIT: Phone did it again for 2 days. Applied the same method, and it worked again. I think partially it happened because I was in a very humid location.
That didn't work for me, I had no option but to replace the touchscreen/gorila glass.

I have to admit, I cared litte whether or not this actually worked. I just wanted to toast it But it did work, so
Pretty tempted to try this out, I think I will when I have free time.
My phone had the dead zone problem for 2 months now, but in some very rare cases, like when it's a very hot day, the screen will work normally for a minute or something. Then it goes back to dead part. I assume this would fix it?

If it DOES indeed work on hot days, then it means the phone is not entirely dead. But I would suggest you do something less drastic first, such as the Glove Compartment method. No responsibility though
If you're trying to remove moisture, you could also try putting it in a baggie of crystaline cat litter (NOT the clay kind!) - this stuff is sold at a MUCH higher price as a way to save a phone from water damage, but it's the exact same substance. Does a great job removing moisture. It's the same sort of silica gel that's in those packets in medicine/vitamins that says "Dessicant - do not eat".
Or you could just put it in a sealed bowl with raw rice for a couple of days... this is the best and cheapest way (and then you have the silicon "grains", the ones that you find in shoe boxes or computer parts boxes).

Pretty sure that rice doesn't do anything, I don't know how that started as a suggestion, but its not better than anything else; its not known to be absorbant, but the silicon is.
I've tried the method but the right segment of the digitizer still doesn't work.
My biggest issue with regards to "lack of responsiveness" are the 4 capacitive buttons. Pressing the Home key is always hit and miss. I know I hit it all the time because I can feel the vibration feedback but it only goes to homescreen 50% of the time.
Will also be testing this out as soon as I have the spare time. My screen started acting up after I accidentally put my milestone in a small beer spill at a party Hopefully this will work out for me too!

Luckily for me, I was still under warranty, heh. Cause I had insurance. This is my second Droid this has happened to. Hopefully my replacement won't do the same thing.
How many times did you reheat the oven? I tried just once and it didn't help. My phone has been having this problem since January.

I feel I am on a cooking show
Well, depends on your over. Mainly I was trying to maintain a temp varying between 50-60 c. Mostly 50, but sometimes 60 to up the ante a bit and make sure things stay warm. 30 minutes at least. However, I have to say that I did this twice in 6 weeks, and after that the phone just died again, and I found my warranty card and sent it there to be fixed, and they fixed it, but ruined something else.
If you have the warranty card, take your phone and send it to them Someone told me the method worked and the phone has been good for quite a while, but most of us seem to re-experience the issue after a while.
I've been having these issues for a few days now too, and I think I know why. I've been using this Milestone for 4 months now, and I never had this problem until a few days ago. What I noticed yesterday was that after some acting up, the phone started working properly again. So I ran Touch Test. And I noticed that if I pressed really hard on the top side of the phone(where the logo and the ear piece are located) it started acting up again. My first impression was that the glue holding down the gorilla glass was loose. So I left the phone as usual on my night stand and then I tried the same thing with the pressing on the same area. Guess what? It didn't happen again. Now there seems to be no problem. So I tried to remember what happened yesterday before the screen started acting up, and I remember talking to my wife for a while when I was in my car. Yesterday was a pretty hot day and I was a little sweaty when I talked to her. Now since only that specific part with the earpiece was causing this issue(I tried pressing equally hard on other areas without any problem my guess is that the insulation between the earpiece and the touchscreen has been breached. Maybe because of all the sweat that went in there in time. You know the salt and acids in the swear are known to melt things, and poor quality glue is among them.
How to fix this? I do not know yet, but I do have a good idea that I'd like to share. I want to buy a screen protector foil, and put just a little band around the ear piece. That would probably lower my in-call volume, but since the Milestone is very loud anyway I hope it the quality of the calls won't be too much affected. After that I'll use it in normal conditions again and see if the ghosting happens again.
try completely formatting your SD CARD/PARTITION.
& then reinstalling using (FAT 32/EXT 2, 3, or 4)
sometimes traces from the previous ROM might interfare with touch codecs (maybe)

It fixed the Issue of my friends MS without other problems
I'll have to try and the oven methode again. My phone has started to really act up again.
I've tried to install new roms, wipe ect. and it doesn't help with the screen.
Have anyone tried to replace the digiziter? They are pretty cheap on ebay
My milestone started freaking out just an hour ago. No more warranty here but I'm not brave enough to do the oven method. Had anybody tried the Rice alternative?

Last night my phone fell in water, and was still working so I turned it off to let it dry put it in a bag of rice etc. phone kept turning on by it self, I was debating if I should try and extract the pics right then and there but I kept telling my self the phone just fell in the water and its working let me turn it off so it can dry ( the smart thing to do right?)
well I turned on about 2 more times finally got it in the bag of rice and didn't turn back on by it self after that ( I don't think )
Well this morning I went to turn it on and nothing, put it on the charger nothing.
I just had a summer vacation and all my pics are on there with no backups, I am willing to try just about anything to extract these pictures any suggestions?
I also have a small theory that maybe the phone died, and charging port is not working from water?

I know this doesn't help you. But this is the reason that I backup pictures I can't do without to picasa. Google plus has the auto backup thing. Good luck extracting the pics.

If the phone's completely dead, then there's nothing you can do. That's been confirmed by developers and moderators in a similar thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414049 ... just go to the nearest service center and see if they can somehow extract the data from the memory, in case it's still intact. Also, I had a similar water accident several years ago with my old phone ... it started working again after several days of drying on a warm place. So put it back in the bag of rice and leave it for several days. Bear in mind that One has an aluminium body which is always cold (especially when the phone's not working and internal hardware can't heat it up), so that won't help in the drying process. If you don't succeed to power it back on, then the service center is your only solution. Good luck mate!

put it back in the bag of rice for a few days. don't touch it and definitely don't try to power it on. the only way the phone can get damaged (any more) is by turning it on. as long as it's off, no damage can be done.

Aluminum is a good thermal conductor, so it draws heat from your hand faster than other materials, making it feel colder, even though it's the same temperature.
Hello.
There's water in connectors (from keyboard, screen, plugs, ect... to motherboard), the only way is to completely dissamble the phone for remove each drop of water.
If no, it append this thing, the phone died because oxydation corrupt contacts and "eat" the copper tracks of printed circuits, so, there's no communication between parts.
The rice cannot blow this water because connectors are very tiny and deep inside the phone.
You need an electronician for trying to rework the tracks (big deal) and clean connectors.
I already rebirth an SGS1 by this way.

Thanks for the help guys just wanted to update, I took sim tray slot out, left it in the bag of rice for a bit longer, and then the phone started charging. I extracted everything I needed to from the phone and got my pics out.
Phone has been working great, only thing now is there is some condensation on the camera lens. I might stick it back into some rice again and see if I can get that out.
Hi all, hoping you can help! Sorry if it's too long, just trying to give all details I can.
My lovely toddler gave my phone a brief wash when I turned my back. When he handed it to me it wasn't too wet at all, looked more like a couple of drops on top, and I didn't realise what he had done then. Thinking there was only a couple of drops, and that it might have just been dead I plugged it in and tried to charge and turn on (obviously kicking myself now!!!). It initially came up with an orange light and vibrated when I tried to turn on, but wouldn't. And hasn't turned back on since. So I took the phone out of it's case and realised there was a bit more water round the back. It subsequently turned out there was water in the charging port itself and where your SIM/SD card goes. We are on a boat so have limited resources, but I dried it out with a cloth then went to hunt out some rice. Popped it in rice for a few hours, then realised I could open the back up so I did, only one drop in there which I wiped up. I read another blog which said that you get better results with drying out by fan. So dried it in front of the fan over night. It suggested silica, so got some of that this morning, in the form of damp rid, and have popped that in a container with my phone. Currently the phone seems dry to me, but I'm a little unsure what to do next. There's a few photos that weren't yet back up so I'm hoping I can find a solution somehow. Frankly, if I never get my phone to work but can take my photos and data off I would be rather happy with that. I was wondering if I perhaps short circuited it when I tried to turn on??
