Alright, I tried first with the stock rom: different usb cables, kies, installing uninstalling samsung drivers, double twist, on a mac and on windows 7, and nothing works, no matter what I tried, none of that could show me the notification bar asking for what to do with the usb connection. Of course I tried setting the phone on debugging mode and on mass storage, also ask everytime, etc.
Finally I decided to leave the stock rom and move to Cognition froyo, in order to discard a hardware issue. Thanks to Rom manager I could make it without needing the usb at all.
Once in Cognition v2.3b8 I crossed my fingers and looked to the sky (even considering that I'm atheist) and plug in the usb to my computer.... and nothing happens besides the phone charging.
Can I say right now that this is definitely a hardware issue?
Some people here are use to say, "if it's charging, definitely it's a drivers issue", but after moving to a new rom, and trying in three computers (two windows and one mac) it is a drivers issue that I can fix without buying a captivates motherboard?
Please help me out here and I'll buy you a beer, a blue moon one if you like ;P
Have you played with your USB settings; debugging, mounting SD card etc?

I'm pretty sure there's a problem with your USB cable if it's not the drivers. Try using a different cable and check.. Should work!
I am having the same issue and I took it to AT&T device warranty center and they found that the USB side on the phone had some water corrosion in it and therefore my warranty is voided. I also went down the path of installing drivers, different OS but this seems to be close. now If some can tell me how to clean this port...awesome
Is the water sensitive patch under the battery still white?

First make sure its not the usb cable. Main power leads in cable usually hold up but smaller wire leads are much more fragile and the only symptom you may get is either wont be recognized and/or usb registers as data connection on the dropdown menu. Ive had a captivate with a corrosion problem but Ive also had a Samsung cable that had broken shorted out data lead but still charged fine.
You can clean port with fingernail emery board cut to shape and stripped on one side of board to proper thickness. Its a five minute mod to a 99 cent board.

I've seen long threads of people who reported the same issue: no actual water damage, but a messed up USB port and their warranties being unjustly denied. Try cleaning the contacts in the phone's microUSB port with a coffee filter dabbed in rubbing alcohol, or scratching at them with a thin wire.
I'm currently having USB port issues with my brand new replacement Captivate (phone sometimes randomly thinks it's plugged in when it isn't, thinks it isn't plugged in when it is), haven't had any luck fixing them yet.
If there's no visual residue on the charging port, they cannot rightfully void your warranty. The captivate has 2 LDI's(Liquid Damage Indicators), one on the battery and one on the phone itself, behind the battery. As long as those two are white, and as long as there isn't a bunch of green crap on the charging port, they will replace it.
I work at AT&T, and we deal with this everrrrrrrrry day. 3 big rules with warranty swaps; LDI's need to be white, charging ports need to be intact and not corroded, and there needs to be no physical damage, any scratches or dings that you can feel with a fingernail are considered physical damage. We help people who terlet their phones get warranty exchanges sometimes, nothing an exacto knife and some raw effort can't fix. AT&T is a weak beast, be assertive and they will bend to your will.
In all honesty though, just make the charging port as clean as you can and call in. Ask for a supervisor, tell them it's a documented defect with a recent wave of Captivates, and you won't hang up until they exchange it for you.
well thanks for the help, now I'm gonna check the white indicators and if the phones usb needs to be clean

I had that problem with my brand-new second Captivate out of the box. Not going to deal with warranty and bull**** water damage accusations, this is being returned to the retailer first chance I get.
I've had something weird happen as well. I've had my Captivate plugged into my PC using USB Debugging at least 10 - 15 times today. I also clicked "Mount" so I could transfer files that I have backed up.
Now suddenly it stopped working. I have jumped around using every port on my laptop (all 4). I have noticed it's acted weird before.
But now (without anything plugged in at all) the laptop keeps popping up saying USB Device Not Recognized.....even though I'm not trying to plug anything in.
Should I reinstall the Samsung 32 bit drivers? I did uninstall Kies today because I had no use for it. It was annoying to have Kies open every time I plugged in.
I have a captivate lying around which have the same problem, i/e the USB cable works fine for charging but not for PC connectivity.
Since it is a development phone, I just reverted to using adb wireless widget.
Other than that, after reading this thread, it seems to be a common issue.
I got my phone exchanged (again) and no USB or GPS problems this time. I got a grainier-looking screen though...meh can't complain really, since this is the only Captivate I've owned that doesn't have any major/hardware-related problems.
My USB not working ended up being my laptop (not phone). I had to unplug the power supply....shut down for a few minutes.....reboot and it worked. I had tried reinstalling the drivers but it did nothing.

I appreciate the advice use some acetone to remove the green stuff but phone is still being difficult when trying to connect to the pc ...be nice if samsung came up with something so there wouldnt be a possibility that water would get in the port
I've had this problem since i got my phone, and i've had it for months now.
Always thought it was drivers.
My last try was with the new AIO captivate tool box app and the drivers their.
For those of you that got replacements how did you go about this.
just go to the store? Or is there a number to call to do it over the phone?
It's just annoying not being able to transfer pictures and such off my phone, hell it worked with my iPhone. I know you can setup wifi file transfers, but if i'm at a friends house it would be nice just to be able to plugin the phone and transfer files too it.
I fixed this problem selling out the phone. Not joke.
BUT, thing is, that the buyer, couple days after the purchase, told me that he fixed this issue by simply restoring the phone to the stock rom through odin 1 click.
Why I didn't try that easy fix? Simply because I thought that the phone was already in the stock rom :S
Lesson learned: always double check if you're in stock rom or not. (obviously you don't need to do this if your purchased the phone brand new!)
It's really weird, a week ago my phone suddenly freezing while I was out, I took the battery off and put it back but it was stucking on AT&T logo scree. I've tried that for few times nothing changed, put it away and the next day tried for few more times and this time came up (also recovery mode and 3 buttons didn't work too).
Everything was look fine but had a problem it was when I plug the USB cable it's just showing the charge status, means couldn't connect the Phone to PC ,I tried with some other cables and PCs, also put hair dryer if possibly water went in but the problem was from the phone.. also when took the USB off the charging status was keep going. first thing I thought it would be the ROM, I had some other ROM in the memory to I flashed to another ROM, but the problem was still there.
tried many times nothing changed, I was almost wanted to grab a new one, till 2 nights ago after a week while it was charging I suddenly noticed that it can connected, I straight away got backups copied to PC and flashed to Stock, now everything looks fine after few days and it works good.
any suggestion on that? is it could be water inside or something?
My ROM was Cognition 2.3 at that time
hope it's not gonna happens again.
I had the same problem and it was a bad USB port any phones made before December '10 have had a lot of problems. Warranty gave me a replacement without question.

I've scoured this site as well as many other sites and have not found a solution.
i phone is in a soft brick state - phone--!--computer
and i cant find a way to get in to recovery or download mode...
what i've tried:
3button combo - and every permutation of buttons and usb plug ins and battery inserts
home made jig - made with resistors and a multimeter reading of 301k ohms
One-Click unbrick - cant find device perpetually prompts to reinstall drivers
Heimdall one-click 1.3.0 - connects then prompts to install drivers to Samsung USB Composite Device (successful) then repeats process... (did not check box bootloaders)
Super one click - stops responding after waiting for device
Odin3 - cant find device
I've run out of ideas... is anyone else having problems with this?
What else is there that i can do???
the phone to pc screen means a jig or 3 button combo will work (if you have 3 button fix).
try again with jig or order a professional jig.
Homemade jigs are a pain in the ass. Did you wrap them in tape where you're holding them so not to throw off the resistance? It may take a while for you to get them touching the correct pins. That screen means soft brick. Try Heimdall again, that can take a few times. Did you install the drivers for Heimdall? Keep trying because you're only soft bricked. Jig or Heimdall unbrick should work. What were you doing to your phone when this happenned? What ROM is currently on your device? What were you ettempting to do?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944418
This has recovered me from many soft bricks
Only thing I can say is Isolate your fingers from the resistors, make sure your connecting the correct pins and give it a few seconds for the phone to register the jig. (also it might take a min or 2 for your comp to recognize your phone)
If you happen to be on KF1 then you very well might be in DL mode, because they have written in that if that err notice is triggered it will still show even if booted by a jig. You might have to work a lil on your timing.
Also, you can't use ODIN and Heimdall from the same physical USB port on the PC. These drivers are dealing with low level function and are less flexable, so make note of which "com port" hemidall is using and find another for ODIN. Also be picky about which USB port as there seems to be a major difference between ports that are hardwired/built-in to the PC motherboard and others connected by wire. Lastly make sure your using a "good" cable as this has been a problem for many.
The connect reconnect loop makes me think you have a bad cable (really only bad for samsung phones cuz well... samsung).
I've never had a problem with my home made jig. It saved my a$$ on more then one occasion. I did have one problem with flashing GB bootloader, but then I realized that I could still flash with odin.
What phone version do you have (marked under your battery)?
i have sgh-I896
but under "IC" it says SGHI897 ???
My jig manages to turn it on no problem... it just goes to the phone--!--computer thing though..
Edit: I made my jig on a piece of solder board, and i connect them to pin 4 and 5... closest ones to 3.5m jack
Try to run Odin or hemidall after you plug the jig in. I recovered a 7" galaxy tab when it was at the phone! computer screen.

I used my jig to turn on my Captivate, wile showing the phone--!--computer logos i plugged in my usb.
my computer recognized it and i opened Heimdall.
It connected and i pressed flash... it then gets stuck on Handshaking loke...
it stays like this for hours.... i left it on over night and all during work...
could it be my usb cord?? its a samsung
Edit: OMG!! its working now... moved usb to behind my computer then used One-Click unbrick.
Thank you all very much
Hey the One Click unbrick detected ur phone in the phone----!---- PC screen? Bcz i have the same problem than u, 3 keys comb were allways locked, my pc cant find the phone and i cant use the ADB commands for get in download, i made a jig and nothing (i think that i did something wrong), i bought one but have to w8 about 5 days more to get it in my hands. I will try connecting my phone in all the usb ports now..
Yea bad usb port seems to be the culprit. Always go with a usb off the motherboard. Jig will always work if the screen turns on.

this has happened to me as well. as long as u install the heimdall drivers you can get around that. i have my heimdall.exe in my c: in downloads. i open up my cmd prompt then type cd\ then press enter to get to the c:. then i put downloads\heimdall close-pc-screen after that as long as u have all ur drivers installed it should boot right up.
I ended upo bricking my phone pretty bad today. Everything I tried is not working and all I'm left with now is to wait for my USB jig to come in which I purchased off eBay. I really hope it works.
^^^ How u manage to do that......? post some more details.

Hey guys ,
While i was updating the phone using ode3 , the pc restarted , and the phone restarted while it was installing the os . Now the phone doesnt response to anything , no power noting at all .
I have seen some articals around but i dont know which one I should follow to try to fix that or what to do .
1- there is the usb dongle where I make a 300 ohms resistance and plug it in the usb port to force download mode . Does that apply to the phone ?
2- another way i found where i have to solider and open the phone , which i hope not the case
I am not sure what to do , but its been 3 days the phone is fully died .
Ya, if you get nothing its bricked. However, if you get any small sign of life then you would be able to get to download mode via usb jig.

Are you saying with the usb jig?
Mine crashed the same way just the other day. I took 3 100k resistors and 2 1k resistors, put them in series then carefully touched the two ends to the two pins on inside edge of the usb female plug. It took about 15mins of trial and error then I touched them just right and it popped up with the DL screen. You say it's completely dead but if it had any charge left in the battery when it crapped out on you it should still have it now. It shouldn't drain just sitting there.
Take the battery out and try the button combos for download mode again... vol+ vol- and insert usb

My stock rom M8 is answering and making calls in speaker mode all the time. Also, the home screen is allowed to rotate. I've read a bit about some other phones having this issue caused by a bad USB port. Has anyone reported issues like this with the M8? Plug in a USB cable and it's back to normal. The USB cable doesn't even have to be connected to anything on the other end for this to work. Unplug the USB and the screen comes on a couple seconds later with the issues back again. I'm hoping someone can tell me I don't have to replace my USB port to get it fixed.
Phone info:
Stock Sprint rom
Running ART (changed animation scales down to .5)
Only using 10B of 32GB of phone storage and 10.5GB of a 32GB SD
Factory reset the phone and it didn't fix
Using Tasker for managing Ringer profiles and mobile data connection
Chrome installed and updated
All phone updates are updated
Always use HTC charger and charging cord
Phone is babied (It sits in a case on a microfiber cloth on my desk at work )
HELP! My ears can't take anymore of the auto speaker mode.

It looks like your phone thinks its always on "Car Mode". Some cleaning of the usb connector might be able to fix it.
There is an extra pin in the phone usb connector that detects when its connected to car dock, desktop craddle or in usb host mode.if something is bridging it to the ground pin, this can happen.

I cleaned it with part of a Q-tip and some glass cleaner, then probed around in there with a needle. Nothing looked dirty. I ran a usb cable in and out a few times to see if it would work something out of the way. I'm leaving it dry out now (just in case it's a little moist) and we'll see what happens.

I spoke to HTC and our last resort before sending it in is to re-flash the stock Sprint RUU. Are there instructions on that somewhere? Or, is it better to just root now that it's somewhat busted?

Hit the second link in my sig and read over the section about RUU's. Links to the latest RUU can be found at the bottom of the first post. There is info on the same page as the RUU on how to run it.
Ok, I'm going to start off by saying I'm not big on doing how to threads, but one doesn't exist for this at all that I could find on Google, so I'll share how I did it. Open your console, there is a screw under the sticker on the bottom inside the hole, it's easy to miss. 5 total screws. Remove the board, controller port, front panel and power jack as one since they are soldered together. Look on the board for 6 pin holes, and notice they are marked the same as an adafruit micro USB breakout board, then forget it because those cost money and take a month in the mail and I'm cheap. I mention it because it's an option. What I did instead was take a micro USB cord, and cut the micro tip off and exposed some wire. Solder white to dm, green to pm, black to vss, otherwise known as d- d+ and ground. Do not connect the red 5v wire. Cap it or tape it. The board and PC USB have power already. Once those 3 wires are connected plug the board in and plug the USB into PC and turn the Atari on. If connected properly it shows up as composite device and you can now use adb to connect to it, because it's running Android 4.4. the folders we need are system/atgames for the all-games.ini file and system/atgames/Atari for roms and PNG files(game case). Roms need to be a26, bin works but you must change the file extension to a26, use prompt and type rename romname.bin romname.a26, the photos need to match the rom name, romname.a26.png.
I'm not going to explain adb as many tutorials exist. Before you do anything pull the ini file and make a copy in a safe place. Also keep a copy handy to edit it. As you add games you push the a26 rom and PNG to the atari folder, then you go into the ini and add the game info at the bottom, be sure to leave a space between games and read the ini to see the format to use, it starts with [rom name] and then has some defining traits below it. You can copy one and paste it, simply changing the info to match the new rom added. Save the ini and push it back to the atgames folder, rom and PNG to Atari folder, reset the system and it will show up. There are several variations for cords also, I used a ten foot cord and have it retract into the console, you could buy a USB extension cord and remove the male end, solder those wires and add a hole in the case for the female USB as an example. If you want it to read a flash drive you will need the 5v wire and I haven't tried that. I made the hole for my USB cord in the rear by heating a Phillips head screwdriver driver and pushing it through the plastic then pulling it back out quickly to ensure any excess plastic was on the inside, then used an blade to trim the excess plastic away. You will notice it ends up sitting the same as the power cable. Photos below. Hope this helps someone out there. Also, I'd like to note I don't advocate piracy, I am however an Atari fan and several big games got left out, and since I own the carts I decided I'd add them to my flashback so I could preserve the original copies. I forgot, you need to use this command: adb shell mount -o rw,remount,rw /system to make the system files writeable.
Reserved, take notice of the photo below showing an Android recovery. I'm gonna explore.
Some pictures of the project and results.

yes, you need adb and those drivers installed on your pc
