tried 1 button (power), 2 button (vol down + power), 3 button, (both vol + power), captivate jig (301 ohm resistor), one-click odin (both vol + odin running in PC), still no go... did I miss any un-bricking methods?
it still charges (as it gets warm when charging from wall)
no PC <--> phone screen, no download mode, no boot, no AT&T screen, no boot loop, simply BLACK screen whatsoever....
guys, please help!!! I do not want to be the 1st one to brick the unbrickable Galaxy S devices....
Also, if anyone from Toronto could help with their homemade jig, in case mine was not properly made...
When you are using the 2 button method to try and get into Download mode, did you pull out the battery, SIM, and external SD before hand? The directions for that method should be:
1. Pull out battery, SIM, and any external SD. Phone should also be unplugged from the computer.
2. Leave the phone in this "off" state for at least 10 seconds
3. Hold Vol Up/Down
4. Insert Battery
With regards to the 301kohm resistor JIG, you cannot touch any bare metal on the JIG when you're trying to use it. Your body will change the resistance from 301kohm, to something like 250kohm...which won't work. Again with the JIG, you want to remove the SIM and any external SD card as well.
Does the computer recognize the phone is being plugged in when it's at the black screen?
Also does the black screen have the buttons on the bottom of the phone light up?
You might be able to force the phone to go into download with ADB.
Otherwise try the above post... pull everything and keep trying. It should go into Download mode.

Do you have a multimeter to measure the resistance on your JIG across pins 4 & 5?

The only other option I could think of if I were in that position BESIDES getting a replacement would be to use JTAG to restore the phone.
http://riffbox.org/
It's an expensive piece of equipment at $150 USD. You might be able to try calling up independent cell phone repair stores as I would think a few might have a JTAG.

Samsung told me that the memory chip was burnt when flashing rom, common issue on galaxy phones... only possible fix is to replace the board ...

Wow, sorry to hear that bud... and really disappointing to hear that its a common issue!!!
I'm pretty sure something like that happened to me. I was still in my 30 day window so I took it back to AT&T and replaced it. At first it would just loop the AT&T logo. Then it just went black. Typically if you just get a black screen the phone is done. I would be interested to know how much it cost to get Samsung to fix it. Just incase....

Hey guys- I've run into a bit of a situation with my phone. I've had some experience with flashing and I've been bricked before but I've always been able to get back to download mode. This time however, I can't. I've tried every button combination in the book, but nothing gets me past the phone!computer screen. It seems my phone is one of the unfortunate ones affected by the three button issue. I tried making a jig, but it seems like I'm missing something. The two back pins on the USB are 1 and 2, and the front are 3 4 5 right? Maybe I have my jig wrong?
I think you have your JIG wrong. Generally, pin 4 is on one side, and pin 5 is on the other side.
I have my jig without the USB plug right now, so it's just three resistors in series. Does this mean I have to wedge one of the leads in between the "board" in the plug? or can it just touch the top?

I soldered the jig onto pins 4 and 5 on a spare USB plug. Got nothing. It was a pretty clean job and I'm pretty confident with a soldering iron so I'm not sure what the deal is. The USB plug came from spare cable I had for a WD Passport. Think that could affect it? Other than that, I found out my phone is one of the ones eligible for replacement due to the power issue. I'll be calling Samsung when their call center opens if I can't get this to work somehow.

I recently had to make a jig my self. I would use a different USB cable. All it should take is touching the the resistors to the right pins for a few seconds. Have a look at this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889128
I tried both with and without a USB plug. Since I'm under warranty anyway, I sent back to samsung. They should have a new one to me in a few days. I just guess I have to be careful about flashing ROMs without the button fix.
Background: I was in the process of flashing my rom back to stock rom using Odin3 and it froze. Attempted to repeat the process and could not get it to enter the download mode. Use all of the 3 buttons combo methods, still no joy. Tried the 3 resistors (300 ohms) got it to go into download mode but did not have Odin ready to accept (Lost that download mode attempt). Repeated the process numerous times with no luck. My phone screen is BLACK always regardless of what I attempt to do. Would you consider this stage beyond recovery or is there hope beyond the black screen?
You might want to try the jig that is made to get it into download mode. You can make it yourself or buy one from mobiletechvideos.com
Here is the link. The video at the bottom shows you what it does and how to use it.
Here's a way that not too many people know about but always works for me:
1. Unplug phone from computer.
2. Remove battery, SIM, and external SD if you have one.
3. OPEN ODIN! You don't want to lose your chance again
4. Plug the USB cable back into the phone (remember, the battery is still not in the phone). DO NOT TURN THE PHONE ON.
5. Hold the volume rocker down (both the up and down volume keys).
6. Place the battery back in the phone while holding the volume rocker.
7. Download mode!

Lol but no, not too many people do.
This method is very much like another one, which requires you put in the battery first, then hold the volume down button and plug in the cord. But this one has you plug in the cord first, then put the battery in. This method worked for me when I got Phone -!- Comp, whereas the other one did not.
So you didn't burst my bubble at all, seeing as you're wrong. Thanks for the useful post though.
Maybe I am wrong but most of the people who helped me and people I talk to know about that technique lol. But maybe it's just coincidence.

Loggik, I appreciate your the method you have mentioned. I have tried that method and several others numerous time. I also used my (car) phone charger usb end, third pin closest to the headphone on one side and the second pin on the opposite side as jig (300 ohms) and it did not work. Not sure if the car charger is suitable for such. I also read somewhere that if your phone screen is black and unresponsive regardless of what method one would use, then the jig would be useless. Is that a true statement?
Thanks for info.. I was able to get the phone to enter the download state via my homemade jig.

Yeah you say before have used the resistors trick and doesn't work and then you use a homemade jig and work. I understand jig is the same to resistor trick(if not, someone correct me).
I have 2 captivate now, 1 work fine and the other don't turn on of any way after a flash fail... using 301k working phone enter to download mode, the other one don't give any sign of life.I need to revive my phone :'( plz any help is welcome.
Looks like your 2nd phone is hard bricked, You will need a Jtag service for it. Contact Adamoutler on the forum he can help u.
Ok so here goes my soft brick story.
First off I've been searching for about 4 days and cant get anything to work.
The captivate has a bad power button, I've tried opening it up, doing that QCD cleaner and nothing works. So anyways I got USB debug on and was able to get into DL mode with ADB and used Odin one click, but thats where the problem started. After about 2 hrs of waiting after the process started it just hung so I pulled the cable, and now Im in a soft brick(Phone---!----PC). I read of some people saying they can flash while in that screen but I cant get Odin or Heimdall to even recognize the phone while it is like this.
I've tried the most recommended way of pulling battery, connecting phone to USB and holding both volume buttons to get it into download mode but that doesnt work. As soon as I pop the battery into the phone the Phone---!---PC screen pops up, I tried with both volume buttons, just the bottom volume and just the top volume button but nothing works, as soon as the battery goes into the phone the Phone---!---PC screen pops up.
Only thing left to try is making a USB Jig but I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before and was able to fix it without the jig. Im doing this for a friend and I dont want to have to wait for the JIG to ship to my house, and Im not confident enough in making my own considering I dont even have a spare mini USB cable(I have an HTC Amaze so the cable isnt the same) and the cable I'm using is someone elses so I cant tear it up to even try and make a jig.
Also I've tried three different USB ports on my laptop and another three on a different laptop but it still doesnt get recognized.
Sorry for the long ass rant. but this is just driving me insane, I'm about to just use this phone as batting practice if I cant get this to work.
Edit: oh yea this happened while trying the Odin one click to get it back to stock, no GB or anything of the sort, the phone was still Froyo, just a custom froyo rom.

First, please don't double post, because it clutters up the forum. You could have added a post to your original thread.
Second, with this type of problem, I didn't need a jig. First, take out the battery and put it back in (dont turn on!!). Next, plug the USB part of the data cable in the computer. Use one of the various combos to get into recovery mode, like hold both volume buttons, and power/lock button). It should show the recovery screen. Then plug the microUSB part into your phone and run one click recovery here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989. This should solve your problem.
Please dont quote the OP when youre the first post...

are you putting the battery back in first? if so try leaving the battery out...I just tryed it on my spare captivate i took the battery out removed sim and sd card plugged the usb in and held all 3 buttons to simulate the power button sticking and then put the battery back in and it went right to download mode i hope this helps you.
Sorry about the duplicate threads, didnt realize that one had gone through since I got an error when I pressed post.
Anyway @nirajpant7 I cant pop the battery in the phone without it coming on by itself. Even if I dont press any buttons as soon as the battery goes in, the screen comes on with the phone--!--PC screen. Also my power button does not work so I cant really try all the button combos.
@SGA was trying to stay stock, phone was on a custom 2.2 rom so I wanted a stock 2.2 rom for the phone. Also does the cable matter that much? Hmm I dont think I have a way of getting a OEM Samsung cable.
@4-2ndtwin Yea thats what I heard but Odin, nor Kies, nor Heimdall recognize the phone while in that screen. Also on that thread you posted I've tried all the different ways more than once with no luck.
Anyway thanks for the fast replies guys I'll keep working on this and update with any new info...or a nice video of a flying captivate Lol
Just try another cable... even if it not OEM. In most cases where the PC does not match up the drivers its the cable. Even when I assigned the drivers manually to the device it would not work. It would always register as an unknown Google device. A new cable quickly sorted the problem out, and you can see that has been the main issue for anyone where Odin does not recognise. I am currently using a generic cable from the dollar store and it works, but the phones are picky. Sometimes they don't even like their own cables.
My cappy is recognised with cheap cable, my nexus s won't for the life of it identify with anything other than its own cable....
Its worth a shot...

I brought it back to the service center. The putting pressure method only works for a small time and is unreliable. Eventually my entire powerbutton stopped working and I couldn't charge my phone anymore. I suggest you bring your phone to a service center before it gets worse.
Guys,
I have the same problem and I ended up opening my phone to see what is going on.
Basically, there is a bus (a group of cables) that comes from the power button, usb port and ear speaker and is connected to the motherboard exactly in the area where you apply the pressure, more or less around the LG logo.
The connection of this bus is done using a 14 pin dual inline package.
What happened in my phone, I assume it is the same in yours, the base on the motherboard where this bus is connected got disconnected, it lost the solder around the pins and the connection it has with the board is loose.
I will try to provide a picture the next time I open my phone..
When you apply pressure, what happens is that you fix the connection so the button works.
In my case, the whole base got disconnected and there is no way to solder it back manually because it is surface mount and it is extremely tiny, you can barely see it with bare eyes, but it might be done using a microscope although I doubt it due to the crowding of the components in that area.
What I did was to put some papers behind it to increase the pressure, but it was a temporary solution.
At the moment, the button works only with pressure, I cannot use the ear speaker (it is dead), and the usb port only supports charging and no data transfer.
I do not know why LG uses such low quality components.. but what can I say?
Be careful guys, it might get worse with time, make sure you do not let ur phones fall or receive hits.
Good luck!
I have the same problem, usb connector and speaker is ok, both are in the same cable flex with the power button,
the only way to power up without the button that i found is:
1.-remove the battery
2.-press and hold volume + and connect usb to charger or pc (the software update screen is displayed)
3.- insert battery, then disconnect usb (the software update still show up)
4.-here you need to be quick, remove and insert the battery quickly
after that's the phone restarts.
