OK I bought an used Captivate is firmware is 2.3.3
baseband i897uckf1
Kernel 2.6.35.7-i897uckf1-cl273832
build.number gingerbread. Uckf1
My problem is that I think it's rooted but no superuser.apk. so I downloaded it from the market, but it tells me that the binary is outdated. I tried to update the binary but su force closed. I tried super one click method, also many other ways to root but when I got into recovery there's no options for reinstall package . Also it doesn't have the 3 button combo to boot into recovery. So I want to go back to stock and go from there and see if I can root and start using custom roms. What can I do? Wolf's toolbox already soft bricked my brothers captivate so any options so I don't go blind here.?

I would use odin to put the phone on a stock firmware. I've done this on an epic 4G, a sister to the captivate . I'm sure there's a guide to use odin and stock firmware somewhere on the forum. After its stock reroot and blah blah etc. That way you know everything is done right if you did it yourself.

ok but do i need any boot loaders? because i read that going from gingerbread to stock you need bootloaders.
also theres 3 stocks f6, h2, h3 so which one is the safest one to flash? i really dont want to brick the phone
You already have gingerbread bootloaders so you don't need to touch them (its safer to not mess with bootloaders). If your looking for gingerbread stock its KH3 use this one with no bootloaders http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1269524

OK thanx for that now with my problem rooting the phone. Theres no option for reinstall packages and when i try to update the binaries it FC, What can I doo to root and flash Roms? Thanx again
If your going to Flash a ROM on it there is no need to Root.

Im kinda confused..... in order to flash the rom I need rom manager and ton use rom manager I need root permissions so, any other way?????
Man thanx alot, I flash H3 and my recovery changed, I'm such a dumbass, well trial and error as they say, right. Many many thnx.
If you follow the link captain Nero gave you it is to an Odin packaged GB ROM. You don't use room manager for this, you flash you're phone using Odin from a widows computer.
Also you don't need root to flash with Odin.

Yes my bad, I meant custom roms, because when I booted into recovery before flashing the GB Rom from the link, all I got was the original recovery as I posted on the photo. But now thanx to you guys everything is up and running. Again many thanx
Just use a kernel with CWM cooked with it. You can use Boog's KH3 cwm kernel or Design Gear's KF1 cwm Kernel (step 2)

Hello All,
I have the Rogers Captivate i-896 and recently moved over from a Bell I-9000 GTM. Reason why I moved from I9000 is due to the scare that most of the Bell Versions weren't flash friendly.
Due to my bad experience in the past, I just want to double check before I flash any roms. My two big interests lately have been either the Firefly ROM or Pheonix 2.2.1 version 4.5. Just wondering, anyone on XDA with a Rogers I896 that is currently running any of these ROMs with no issues at all?
Sorry if this is a repeat. I'm just not about to read 800 pages through the thread. Thanks a lot and your feedback will help a lot!
I too would love to know the answer to this.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I896 using Tapatalk
Firefly all the way!
The only flaw I have found in it is the SMS timestamps, that can be fixed by installing SMS time fix from the market.
Its infinately customizable. (there is a huge thread based on it and pheonix here, alot of the Pheonix stuff will work on it as well)
It also does not apply the AT&T boot screen on startup, so if you do have any warranty issues getting back to stock is all that much easier.
I'm currently running it and its great!
Its also based on our stock rom.........Whats better than that

Dammit. Now I feel like a noob, with the question I am about to ask...........
Sooooo, the old way I flashed the rom is not working for me. I am installing Clockwork Mod Recovery via Rom Manager, and then I keep clicking "Reboot into Recovery Mode".. I've done this process over and over atleast 5 times, and its not booting into CWM Recovery. What do I do?
I am trying the OneClick ODIN, but it doesn't give me an Option of which ROM file to flash..
HELP?!
Have you got firefly installed?
What do you mean? I downloaded the ROM and put it on my SD Card.. But, its just a matter of getting into Clockwork Mod Recovery so I can flash it.. I know what to do in Clockwork, just don't know why its not booting into Clockwork Mod.. :??
power down the phone.
boot into recovery manually vol-/vol+ and power
when you get into recovery choose reinstall packages.

Because you cant push a launcher or get into any settings menu, my only suggestion would be to flash a new rom. And assuming that the rom you just flashed (being completely stock), you wont have the 3 button combo although I suggest you try it. (Im not sure about the combos for 2.2 roms).
If you cant get into recovery/download through any method, my next suggestion is to buy/build a JIG and force your device into download mode, by which you can use ODIN to flash a rom.
You can make a jig for about a dollar or buy one for about 10. (Best purchase i made). Just take a look around the forums for more info on this.
yes i can get into where it says reboot system now, reinstall packages delete data ya know. not much experiance
and i can still get the usb modes when i plug in usb. kies media player mass storage.just an amature
Not sure if it would work...but odin3 v1.0 had a option for enable debug .could he just do that? Then adb push /system/app/launcher.apk? See pic

My apologies. My GNote(international version) is on official Samsung ICS & I just want to root it for the time being till a solid custom ICS based ROM is developed. To clarify I'd like to know which of the stock ICS ROMs in the list(in the thread mentioned in my first post) should I use to flash my Note with. I'm not a dev so if there's a risk in rooting the official Samsung ICS ROM then I'll wait till it's safer. What would you suggest sir?
I got my note yesterday and was overwhelmed with all the threads I ended up flashing ics in Odin and used speedmod kernel. Now all is good and using cleanote ROM.

I'd go back to Gingerbread to root it. Then, I'd flash a GOOD ICS rom (something CM9 based). But that is my opinion, I just don't like stock TouchWiz.
You can Odin one of those stock Gingerbread ROMs from DrKetan's thread in Android Development. I live in the U.S. so naturally I didn't have a country rom so I just used Open Germany. It doesn't really matter.
To root it use this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1647148. I already tried in lq2.

Righto. Just a few questions... I went through the entire thread and found folks were having some issues. So:
1. Are you getting permanent full root via this method & SuperSU? Or is it temporary?
2. Any Wi-Fi/ overheating/ slowdown issues after rooting?
3. Do you need to rename CWM.zip to update.zip or do you leave it as is?
4. Lastly, if needed, can custom ROMs be flashed safely, and if so, generally which ones?

1. Permanent
2. No, the same.
3. Leave it as is. Go to stock recovery. Click update zip then choose CMW zip in external sd
where you should put the downloads. After that the recovery will change to touch CMW(use your finger to navigate), it is only temporary, then click INSTALL ZIP and find the rooting zip file you download. Finish you are rooted.
4. After rooting I use mobileodin to flash an ics. But you can flash any ics you want and flash ics kernel speedmod k3-3 to automatically get CMW or flash cf root to get CMW. About custom rom, this i recommend. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716088. You must have speedmod k3-3 before flashing it, very important.
If you want another custom rom read carefully their procedure. Different custom rom different procedure, there are not the same. Be carefull, for example if you want to flash paranoid rom you must be in gingerbread rom before flashing it, if not, you will BRICK your phone. The cm9 is the same, you must be in gingerbread. Just read and again and again untill you know what you are doing, if not sure, read the threads, learn from their mistakes, ask question there, they will help you.
Success! I did it but only CWM.zip got installed from the ext SD card. I had to install SuperSU from the internal SD card. Now I'm gonna use MobileOdin to flash speedmod k3-3.
Hi all,
I'm currently on stock Gingerbread, which I have rooted via the ODIN method (I flashed No-Wipe N7000XXLA6_N7000OXEULA1_XEU Europe (03/02/2012) from THIS thread) and would like to move onto installing custom ROMs (namely the ParanoidAndroid ROM)
I was just wondering if someone could provide me with some instructions on how to do it, as the ones in the thread doesn't mention any kernels or moving from stock ROMs.

since you are on GB, you may also flash abyssnote42 touch kernel.
you may wish even to stay on that GB rom with that kernel, but from that setup, you can follow the rest of the instructions.
I've heard a lot about abyss, but how would I revert back to stock kernel in the instance of warranty etc? And if I flash abyss I can follow the standard instructions for PA right? e.g
Install Rom: http://d-h.st/DtV
Install HYBRID Gapps: http://4ndr01d.com/drcmda/common/
Wipe caches, factory reset is a must if you're coming from another rom than CM9
If your statusbar is gone after the first reboot: longpress Powerbutton > Toggle Statusbar
Reboot and edit your Apps Dpi under Settings/Paranoid Settings/P.A.D. Hold the powerbutton to see the new fullscreen-togglebutton

yes, your right, Because your on GB now you can just flash the abyss kernel and flash the ROM.
as for reverting to stock, When / If the time comes, just download a full firmware package from XDA or Sammobile and flash it using ODIN, that will flash everything back to stock
easy peasy !
That's it guys, I've decided I'm going to go with Franco kernel, from his thread here:

If I flashed franco kernel or Speedmod kernel through Mobile ODIN that would be fine right? I don't want any yellow triangle and plan on installing either of the 2 kernels, and then after a while MAYBE install Paranoid Android.
Would that work?
Thanks!
yes, you can use mobile odin to flash kernels
you wont get yellow triangle via mobile odin

Thank you for your response, dratif.
The custom ROM you have suggested, is it based on Gingerbread?
Also, what are the other available custom ROMs based on Gingerbread?
Friends, I am currently on a stock Gingerbread ROM and the Android version is 2.3.6
Considering I intend on flashing a custom Gingerbread ROM, should I look at one built only on 2.3.6 or would any custom ROM built on 2.3.x would suffice?
Hello everyone, im fairly new to the rooting scene and I had a question about CMW. I would like to apologize in advance if the question appears to be off-topic.
Anyways after rooting my GT-N7000 and installing CWM, I wanted to backup my current stock rom before trying out the Jelly Bean AOKP ROM. I found a tutorial that explains the proper way of backing up your phone. So i followed them and powered off my phone, held Up volume, home and power buttons, however unlike in the tutorial video ClockWorkMod recovery didn't show up on my screen but the stock Android recovery did. I would like to know if I made a mistake during the rooting process, or is smth wrong with my phone?
Can somebody please take the time and answer this n00bie question because I wanna try out new roms as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance.
I have included a picture of how my screen looks like when I followed the aforementioned instruction.

It may be that you have root, but you do not have CWM. You can use Mobile Odin to load safe kernel (Speedmod, Notecore, Hydracore). You can also upload a secure kernel using Odin PC, but you will have a yellow triangle, which can be removed TriangleAway.apk downloaded from market. This way you get full root and CWM.

You've got root ok, just flash hydracore kernel which has cwm in built. Flash with mobile odin and you shouldn't raise flash counter, even if you do you can use triangle away to remove, then you're set to go.

If you have rooted and on a stock kernel.. then installing new roms are of a greater risk as this involves full wipe.. which triggers the erase...
its best to flash the hydracore latest version 5.1 using mobile odin... as this has latest version of CWM and is safe for wipes.. do a nandroid backup in recovery and then u good for other roms
With the root files which I downloaded from downloadandroidrom.com was included the franco kernel which upon flashing grants permanent CWM recovery.
Hope it helped.
