[Q] Unusable phone, phone freezes and launcher restarts constantly - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I wish I could explain better what I did, but I can't figure out what it might be.
I am running Captivate rooted, mostly stock 2.2 with a modded camera app, and sideloaded apps allowed (for the Amazon market). The behavior is this:
Phone takes about 5 minutes to boot, was previously booting in maybe 1-2 minutes before launcher comes up. Launcher loads and i have a slow but usable phone for 30 seconds then phone freezes, and maybe a few minutes later, launcher will restart. this whole time, i am getting double vibrate every few seconds, like something is freezing/crashing in the background (that's my best guess). I disabled all Widgets in both launchers and it does not hookup via USB once it freezes, but will charge.
This is happening with Samsung TWlauncher and with LauncherPro. Thinking this was a LauncherPro issue, I switched default launcher to TW, but same behavior occurred. I also uninstalled LauncherPro, but still no change in behavior for default launcher. I would like to try to get back to a usable phone, or if worse comes to worse, get my data off the phone before reinstalling either stock, CM7, etc. I do not have a phone recovery as I could never seem to get the clockwordmod recovery to install, so I only have reset user settings as an option from default recovery mode.
The only thing I can remember doing when this started was changing LauncherPro memory presets to see if it would stop restarting often, so I thought maybe LauncherPro was the issue, but it does not appear to be.
I reinstalled LP during a few hour period of usability, but then it occurred again and it took all day to have the right moment of unlocking my phone and getting to be able to uninstall LP before it froze again. If I wait too long to unlock, it is frozen until I restart or pull battery and try again at first bootup before the launcher goes crazy.
My main question is this:
Is there a way to determine which app is causing the problem, pull logs, etc. when the phone is off, and does not connect on USB (when it's frozen)?
If not, is there a way to pull data under same circumstances? (I'm guessing this is tied into the first answer)
If these all fail, I guess I will probably go to CM7 and try that out, but I have a hard time finding out what known issues there are as it still appears in unofficial status, since there's no downloads from the Cyanogenmod site.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. This has been a hard one to search for, so if anyone knows of other instances of situations like this, I would be glad to see what else was encountered. If I have this in the wrong forum, please forgive me.

[Q] nc randomly reboots

Hey guys, my nookcolor has been randomly rebooting since i rooted it. Never while i was using it, i just sometimes hear the bootup sound, and look to find that my book is now on.
Im just concerned this will affect my battery, and i also don't want it rebooting while im using it.
I noticed it doing this one time, but right after i powered it off. In use, it has never rebooted on me (yet)..
This is why we so desperately need a custom ROM. Remove the B&N bloat, and start with a clean 2.2 (or even 2.3 now) base, and really open her up..

I still want to use the B&N stuff. Any rom that emits them, I will not be installing.
I think it likely that there are NC users in both camps-
Those who want the B&N stuff and those who don't.
I am one of those who don't; the Nook for Android software does better for reading ePub, imo and I am rarely near a B&N store.
Right now we have root and Market plus B&N and I would guess (could easily be wrong) that the first custom roms will be pure Android with no B&N.
We will probably end up with an option to set while flashing: retain B&N customizations or straight Android.
I base this guess on what I have seen in the other roms for various devices (mainly Droid) I have looked at.
Same here. If I want to read B&N books, I could still use their Android app on a custom ROM.
After switching to Cyanogen on my phone, it's been quite relaxing to not have to worry about provider updates bricking the thing or otherwise screwing up the rooted customizations (or just randomly resetting the thing back to factory defaults because I started up one of their apps and it got confused). Not to mention that the CM team does a far better job supporting the device than the manufacturer and my service provider does.
And yes, like other Android devices, there will probably be ROMs in both categories: completely built from scratch with no B&N portions at all, and improvements on the B&N system to add more functionality.
Fair enough for those that are interested in the reader portions - i have to admit, i bought this as a tablet, with literally 0% in it as an e-reader; i already have a Sony 505 for that. I may use it on occasion, but only as an afterthought.
However, this topic is really drifting - perhaps we should just bring it back to the rebooting issue?
Yeah, I installed the Uptime Widget on my NC today and picked it up a few ago and its uptime was 1:30; max 15h (from before it rebooted 90 minutes ago). I'll keep running it.
What we need to do is get a logcat when it happens.. So maybe overnight I'll leave it running or something. It just rebooted on me and I was semi-watching it, didn't even notice but Uptime Widget was reset to 7m up, 15:30 max..
I have started up a logcat and I'm going to leave it running while I get ready to go out for the day.. Although I just installed and fiddled with Google Earth, which failed badly, so I wonder if it caused some problem. Also saw it happen after playing with Google Maps, so I wonder about Location stuff maybe doing it.. Dunno. I just launched Maps a few ago and it's been up since. Hopefully a logcat will capture some info.
I have noticed that I've seen some crashes that don't show the Crash dialog.... TweetDeck is particularly bad about crashing viewing some Facebook posts, and in this case it just goes black for half a second then back to the list of posts. A logcat shows it crashed. But I don't know the two are related (not having the crash dialog stuff and the reboots that is).
I had it reboot on me twice last night, one time I didn't know about it until I picked it up later and noticed the uptime widget was down to some 30 minutes, and another time right before bed I hit the power button and about 10s later I saw the boot up text and a reboot happen.
Still haven't caught it on logcat.
My doesn't reboot spontaneously, but it does "lock up" and won't turn on with the power button from standby occasionally. If I remember to use the Nook Button to wake from standby, I don't seem to have this issue. If I use the power button, and it won't wake, I need to hold it down for ~15 seconds and it reboots.
AFIAK, it has done this since I purchased it (I rooted after about 1 hour with the NC in my hands).
Mine has never reboot WHILE I'm using it, it's sneaky about it. But I suppose I'd much prefer it reboot while I'm not using it than while I'm using it; I have yet to have it do a full reboot while using it.
Trying to set up a Delicious account.. yeah, that rebooted the Java VM. But only time I've made it reboot at all.
Hahah, damnit, it just rebooted after it went to sleep. I seriously think it has something to do with going to sleep. I've been sleeping it and waking it repeatedly on adb logcat and it won't crash. Figures.
I had this same issue a while ago. I don't have the logcat from it, but from what I could tell is was some sort of error coming from the system dimming the brightness before turning the screen off. I had Extended Controls installed and was using the widget to adjust my brightness. Whenever the screen would dim before turning off I would get a reboot. I have since uninstalled it and have had no issues with reboots. I'm not sure if this is the issue youre facing but thats my story.

Actually not using any of those on mine.. I have Beautiful Widgets in ADW and Beautiful Widgets + Note Widget in WidgetLocker.. Not adjusting the backlight at all either, in fact I don't think I have at all since getting it now that I think about it.
I have the same issue: rooted Nook Color reboots occasionally and it does seem to do it whenever I put it to sleep or it goes to sleep by itself (when the screen dims). It hasn't rebooted while in use, but it does reboot occasionally when left alone. Have no idea why.
From apps that control dimming I have Advanced Task Killer installed besides the stock app that controls dimming... Could it be the issue? I will uninstall Advanced Task Killer and see if that help.
Otherwise I love my rooted NC. It's fast, beautiful and works great as an E-reader and an Android tablet.
to summarize: Do you think it's the hardware issue or software. I've heard of people who have non-rooted (stock) Nook Color having the same rebooting problem, but apparently it doesn't have to do with rooting. Do you think it will adversely affect the Nook?
If anyone finds a solution please post here. It would be tremendously appreciated.
Thanks and have great holidays.

I suspect it's a software thing, as it doesn't randomly reboot in use, it ONLY seems to happen going into standby, and I have YET to make it happen connected USB for adb.
You know actually, I think alogcat can log automatically now, maybe I should try that.. but it'd have to run for a day or so, as I only see this happen like twice a day at most.
Do you have setcpu installed? I was getting random reboots when I had it on conservative. Switched to ondemand for all profiles, and no more reboots!

I myself had not played with SetCPU at all. So had you in the past and set it to conservative, and switched it back, or you switched it from its defaults? Reminds me, per my observation that it never has rebooted while on AC or USB, was there a default profile when plugged in that it's set to ondemand vs conservative? This could start making some weird kind of sense. I'll try it, but using something called CPU Tuner since it's free..
EDIT: I looked on USB and on Battery, both times was conservative, so looks like that's the default... Does the Nook have an automatic switching utility like cpuspeed in it? Hmm.. /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor is the file if anyone else wants to look.
BTW, has anyone on 1.0.1 auto-nooted etc not seen these random sneaky ninja power-off reboots? I swear mine waits until I'm not looking and reboots. I've only SEEN it do it once or twice, but in the last 5 or so days it's rebooted at least 10 times while powered off. Again NEVER while I'm using it, so I'm at least thankful for that. If it were rebooting while using it that would not be acceptable.
I have the Uptime Widget, kinda wished I had an uptime graph to see if there is a pattern.. I'm about 99% sure it never happens when plugged in AC or USB.
EDIT2: IT IS CLEARLY MOCKING ME. It just rebooted after I peeked at the governor files and let it idle to sleep.
I have the same random reboot problem since I upgraded to 1.0.1 and used auto-nooter. I only see it when it goes to sleep...or so I thought. This morning I heard it reboot and i hadn't touched it since last night. FYI, it was not plugged in when it happened. Thankfully it never reboots while in use.
Oh...ad i havent used any CPU clocking tools. Also...never saw this on 1.0. So weird but I am sure someone smarter than I will figure it out.
UPDATE- Just got out of the shower and while getting dresses...heard the Book reboot twice within a minute or two.
Wondering if its an app that is causing a fatal crash when it tries to update.

I haven't had a random reboot in 3.5 hours and i have used the Nook on and off. I did remove my email account from the Google email app (not gmail) and its been good for awhile now. I will update if this changes but I am feeling confident this fixed the random reboot.

I've had one unexpected reboot today that I know of, I think this has helped, although I keep finding my Wifi turned off, even though this program I installed is only set to turn it off when the battery is extremely low. So I changed that profile and it hasn't turned itself off since, so seems to me maybe the battery reporting is a little wonky sometimes.
I've been watching, and I'll keep an eye out, but I think wvcachi is onto something.
BTW, the Nook has been primarily idle for the last 5 hours, just popped it on a few times to read an email, check on something, or see if it reboots so I haven't used it a bunch but it's lost a whopping 2% battery in that time. I also disabled the Phone stuff too, per this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883908
I am at 6.5 hours now....no rebooting so far.

[Q] Stock 2.3.3 issues [other than battery problems]

Note: I just blogged about it and planning on posting on few Googler's twitter to see if we can get some attention to fix these issues, if they already haven't started looking in to these! If you are interested, please visit "Is the latest Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) OTA update for Nexus One buggy? "and share your experience with Android 2.3.3 on your NexusOne's the Android team can get a bigger picture of these issues! More the merrier!
By now, I have reset to factory default couple of times but still after about 50hrs of usage my Nexus One starts acting freaky! Performance slows down, launching apps gives me black screen, lock screen freezes until I receive a call and not answer it and finally forcing me to reboot the phone.
Is anyone else aware of these issues or experiencing these issues?
I've had a few, repeated issues since upgrading to Gingerbread:
The stock messaging application will sometimes crash after sending a text message. The message gets sent, but the program closes out and returns me to the home screen. When I try to get back into the app, it animates like it is opening, animates like its closing and then gives me an error message about it not responding. I have found the only way to get rid of this is to reboot the phone.
Occasionally, all of the items - icons, widgets, etc - will disappear from the home screen. All I can see is my background image (just a plain JPEG, nothing animated) and cant get anything else to happen. I've tried to give it a few minutes (coming from Windows Mobile, I've learned to be patient) but it never came back. As expected, only a full reboot of the phone fixed the problem.
I've been having strange WiFi and data connection problems. Sometimes when connecting to WiFi it takes several minutes to establish a working connection; however most times it is pretty instant. The data connection will sometimes completely drop out and not come back on its own - even in areas with known good signal (I'm on AT&T, insert jokes here). Again, the best solution I've found is a full reboot.
I have heard some reports from friends that they have experienced issues with Exchange support after the upgrade, but I haven't seen it personally. Other than those above issues (which are very annoying) Gingerbread is has been OK. As I like to tell everyone, I'm sure glad my phone makes a cool TV of animation but can't seem to want to send text messages... Thanks Google?

You are right, I've been having those home screen issues as well, though my wifi connectivity seems to be fine so far.

I can confirm Gingerbread on my N1 facing similar problem. Riddled with bugs such as battery drain, Wifi, Exchange Server, Date format on Notification Bar, Awake forever, just to name a few.
REverted back to 2.2.2 More stable amid less 'cheeky' in term of UI.
Also had force close issues with launcher and other programs getting a black screen after about 2 days without a reboot. Got tired of it and went back to Froyo
I've had trackball notification issues. First it stopped working entirely. After a restore it now only blinks notifications if the screen is off. Once the screen is turned on (even if the phone isn't unlocked) it stops. If the screen is on when the notification is recieved nothing happens.
I'm experiencing battery drain that i believe is associated with maps and location services (the alogcat shows it checking in all the time!).
I've had the launcher become unresponsive to touch. You can use the trackball to navigate, its slow, and once you're inside an app it works fine. Need to restart.
I've had the blank keyboard show up and need to restart.
I'm probably going to switch back to 2.2.2 tonight...
Wow! The issue seems to have touched a lot of NexusOne's. I have also been affected by the "black screen" problem after about 48 hours uptime. Returning to the home screen shows just the wallpaper and no icons. Pressing the "Home" button worked for a while to bring back the icons, but eventually most apps started showing some black screens and I had to reboot to fix the problem. I'm sticking with Gingerbread 2.3.3 for now, but it is disturbing after the multi-week uptimes I was getting under FroYo 2.2.2.

[Q] Atrix won't stop rebooting? help?

I'll try to keep this brief. Earlier tonight I downloaded the Nova Launcher on the google play store. It worked fine, I set it up how I wanted, etc etc. Well I went to looking for an app to replace the circles app on stock ICS. I found an app called "Fancy Widgets" and downloaded it. Practically as soon as it finished downloading my phone rebooted. I thought, maybe, it just needed to reboot for the app to take effect. I had to do that with a previous phone.
But no, Now my phone is just in a constant loop of boot and load to the home screen, wait 10-20 seconds and reboot. It just keeps going through this over and over so basically my phone is useless at the moment.
Does anyone know how to help this? I'm lost. If I can't get it figured out I'm going to have to stay up all night trying to figure it out because my phone is my alarm clock and I'll oversleep otherwise. So.. Please help!! Thanks!

Already tried power and volume down button (6 sec)?
Good news is the att sound works as a good alarm. I found out when mine did that. Restart in safe mode by holding down power and volume rocker then do a factory reset.

funny, I've had nova launcher working with fancy widgets when i updated my phone and it went into a reboot loop. it only happened to me when i updated the phone though
My first Atrix HD rebooted itself daily, sometimes bootlooping and causing me a lot of grief. The phone was fine for the first two days. After that, it went haywire. I would run logcats to try to determine the causes of the bootloops. I always found an error with some random app. I'd uninstall it and the phone would be fine for awhile. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that a problem with the wifi radio was the underlying cause. If not, the wifi problem and reboots were co-morbid, so to speak, and related to the same problem. I was pretty sure the real problem had to do with faulty hardware. I exchanged the phone for another. I've had this one for three days now and it just rebooted itself about 15 minutes ago. That bugs me.
I like the phone, but I think there may be an unusually high number of defective units out there. That's based solely on anecdotal information, but I believe it to be true. If anyone has any additional theories or has an explanation for these reboots, that would be a great help to me.

Yeah, I wish someone knew what the problem was. After I posted this originally at the beginning of October, I deleted Fancy Widgets and didn't have any more problems with boot loop until this week. I blamed it on my two newest apps and un-installed them, but the problem is there somewhere and I randomly reboot after installing Nova back.
This really bothers me. I had just gotten used to how I had everything set up in Nova. The stock launcher is disappointing in comparison now that I've experienced something better.

Replying to myself, but yeah..
It now looks like my issue has something to do with DoubleTwist music player. Nova worked until I tried to put a DoubleTwist widget on my homescreen and it IMMEDIATELY went into boot loop.

Keyboard Malfunctions

Okay, I've got several Samsung Keyboard issues, so bear with me as I explain as it may be a bit long.
First and foremost, my keyboard keeps crashing. At first, I assumed this was just a general issue that a reboot was necessary in order to fix. This is entirely not the case, as it even happens directly after a reboot at times. Also, they keyboard crashing happens in several different ways. This normally happens while using Kik messenger, but it does happen at times while using normal text messaging as well, so I'm assuming Kik isn't the problem.
1)Normal keyboard crash, where it gives an error and the phone tells me it has stopped working.
2)Keyboard entirely disappears, yet I can still type by touching the black area where the keyboard would normally be.
3)Keyboard doesn't disappear, but text entered doesn't appear inside the text box until after closing the keyboard.
4)Keyboard crashes normally, causing either (2) or (3) to happen.
I'm unsure what's going on. I am running a rooted system, so I'm guessing it may be some issue with the root combined with something I've installed, but I'm unsure what it could be. Keyboard was (and has been) working fine for months and months, and I haven't installed anything new since the day I rooted.
I'm rooted with Rooted Community Rom. I've not had any problems with this root since I've installed it, so I don't know what the Hell is going on. Any input would be wonderful, especially if someone could tell me what's causing this to happen, or if others have this issue.

I'm thinking 1) is due to Low Memory causing Force Close (due to many running apps) or the Keyboard App data somehow got corrupted and 2) and 3) are happening due to GPU not being able to draw the Keyboard and letters when called upon; can't entirely be sure unfortunately.
I can think of two solutions to try however:
Clear Data and Cache of Keyboard App
Go to Settings -> Apps -> ALL -> Keyboard
Select Clear data and Clear cache
Reboot or start a messaging app and start typing again
Try another Keyboard App
Many options available, try: AOSP Keyboard, Google Keyboard, Swype
Hope that helps!
Clearing it and letting it reload does fix all of the issues, but it just happens again shortly after. I don't have very many apps, and normally still have around 100MB RAM free at all times. I don't use social media or anything on the phone at all, and most everything else is just Google things, Kik messenger, and stuff pre-installed on the phone(Like the normal sms app, phone app, etc) Reboot, clearing memory, etc, all have the same result. Fixes the problem, only for it to happen again shortly afterward. Sometimes, in the case of the keyboard going blank, clearing memory doesn't fix the issue. It re-loads with a blank keypad. Doesn't happen very often, but it did once or twice today.
I've tried using Swype since it's already pre-installed, but it's not really the same size as the standard keypad and it's difficult to adjust to typing on it :\ I suppose I'll have to make due with using it for now, because that keypad doesn't seem to freeze or crash at all as I've used it (wasn't for very long, but the normal keypad tends to crash at least twice within the span of an hour if it's used regularly).
It wouldn't even be a problem if it wasn't happening so damned often. I'm used to things crashing at random, because having a load of apps (before) caused it to make things crash sometimes. But this is definitely not a "sometimes" issue. It's a "Please God, make it stop" issue lol

I know how that feels. I remember experiencing those keyboard symptoms you mentioned in the past. Frankly, I couldn't leave the stock ROM fast enough.
You should try AOSP or Google Keyboard, the keys are bigger and appear less confusing than Swype.

Performance and app problems ? U.S. Version...

I am finding that my apps that send notifications, specifically that I send through LIghtflow, are either not notifying, or doing so 30 min. to an hour late.
I am also finding that installing as well as uninstalling apps are quite slow.
POwer saver is not on; battery optimization is not on for the offending apps; they are set to run in the background.
Anyone else experiencing this? Or any suggestions?
Regarding the slow downloads, I am finding the download finishes (according to the status bars, etc), but it then goes into a state of Install Pending. Can't find anything on that.
For anyone who cares, I have it resolved for the time being.
After 2 factory resets, I remembered back to the days i used to root my phones, and remembered that one strongly recommended task in that process was to delete cache.
So I did a final factory reset and deleted the cache also and all seems to be good.
When this crops up again I will try the cache delete w/o a factory reset and see how it goes.
Not getting much help here but I'll keep this thread upgraded.
It is again not working right. Lightroom is either not notifying or it's doing it 30 minutes late.
Play store downloads but then doesn't install for a period of time.
I'm beginning to think something is wrong with the phone.
This thing is driving me nuts. Following is what's going on, and have seen:
I've gone through 4 factory resets. All works find at first. Having decided that maybe there is an app interfering, I installed an app or two, tested, repeat...with delays between repeats. All seems fine.
But then late into the second day, w/o any installs, I goes haywire again. Symptoms are:
I use DGT GTD for my ToDo list. First thing I will notice is that when I add a new task, it will NOT show up in the widget list, and at the same time it stops notifications.
All apps stop sending notifications to Lightflow...or LIghtflow does not recognize the notifications. Not sure which is the case.
When add a new app on the Play Store, it downloads as quick as normal, but then it takes forever to install.
I installed AVAST, and checked for viruses. Came back clean.
I suspect it could be a phone problem. My Mate 9 works fine right now, with all the same apps. But, when a factory reset results in it working (at least during the short time a tech would evaluate), the phone can't be exchanged.
If anyone has any thoughts. I'm all ears. I'll keep posting, hopefully, ultimately, with a resolution. Maybe it'll help someone.
