I want to know how to root a samsung captivate without a usb cable because my usb port for the phone doesnt work and the captivate doesnt let me install any apps for rooting because the firmware i am on does not have unknown sources in it. I was thinking, is there a way to root it using an update.zip in recovery. If there is then please upload it for me. I am on recovery 3e just to let you know. Please help and thanks in advance

1. I think that app only roots eclair, but could be wrong.
2. Its not in the market, therefor he would need unknown sources to be able to install it...

So what should I do please I need help. I remember rooting my vibrant with one click lag fix but this is when it was at the market and when I tried to root it, it downloaded an update.zip file and made me reboot into recovery and reinstall packages. Then I had root on the vibrant. What I'm wondering is of there is an update.zip for the samsung captivate. If there is then please provide a link. Also does it matter if I am on recovery 3e
Yes it matters that your have 3e recovery, that is now the bane of your existence, because even if we did provide an update.zip for you 3e requires signed zips and i'm quite sure none exist.
There are workarounds to get 2e recovery back BUT those either require a working USB port or you to have root already...
so unless you get that port fixed I think you're sol...
Keep looking though maybe someone does have a signed zip but I haven't seen it.

Is there an update.zip that has a verified signature. If not then can't someone get it and do some tweaking and try and make it work. Please, and to let everyone know that I have already sent the phone to samsung and they determined that it is beyond economical repair. Whatever that means lol

considering rogers will fix (by sending to samsung) my REALLY cracked screen for 75$ (out of warranty for smash), a usb port would probably be less, if your carrier offers such services

I doubt the will support an of carrier branded device, but it's worth a shot.
Or you can try Samsung directly.
I feel your pain...sorry. I was just curious, your phone charges OK via the USB port but data doesn't transfer?
Sent from my Cappy
samsung provides support, not tmobile, in this case
also, i dont get why someone would want a captivate on tmobile in the us when you can just get a vibrant or galaxy s 4g.....
No I just like the way the captivate looks. To answer your question about whether it charges or not. The answer is no for everything that's supposed to function properly. Meaning the USB port does not work in general. The question is, how hard is it if I repair it myself and could someone help me out here and make an update.zip that would work through recovery 3e

Try and understand this. Read it slowly if you have to.
THERE WILL NOT BE A WORKING UPDATE.ZIP FOR RECOVERY3E.
None of us work for Samsung and we cannot sign the zips. Try to take a few minutes to let that soak in. We have been dealing with recovery 3e since October/November of last year. There has been many efforts but bypassing it requires root. So stop asking for something that is likely NEVER going to happen.

I too am having problems. For all those that need the old version, I am including it in this post. For those that might know how to fix the new one, I am including it in this post as well. Just unzip. Both files inside. 2.0 is obviously the newest version.
Mods, I don't think this is a problem, as the app is not protected and readily available on the Market.
Thanks in advance to someone that can fix it, and I hope the old version helps someone who might have forgotten to back it up.

ok i have something strange to report...
i have the new version installed (2.0) and like everyone else it wont open BUT
my battery level just dropped below 30% and my phone got a notification from My Account 2.0 and when i clicked it a popup came up giving me suggestions to save my battery by changing some settings...hmmmm FC but still running in the background...
2.0 myacct
i am also getting foreclosures hope it was an error by tmobile and theyll update tomorrow or something i cant believe they would target rooted ppl.
Anyone with a JF US CRC1 rom tried it?
Could be that since most of us are on anything but the T-mobile rom that it does this
I mean most of these ROMs are based of ADP or AOSP..
I'm not sure, and maybe im just talking non sense..
But also someone in the comments said they had a Google Ion and it didn't work also..
So this could be ONLY for T-Mobile branded phones?

Give credit next time. There is some property in build.prop that the app is looking at to see if our phone is supported....dont know which tho since my ROM's build.prop keeps going back to its default every time i apply a "fixed" one.
The app is getting a NullPointerException, I don't think it has anything to do with being rooted or not.

So what IS the build.prop change that we need to make? And will it hurt anything else if I modify it?
See my post above...its using the build.prop to detect if we can use it...thus this error on some rooted phones.

Recovery Reflash Tool
Available for linux, mac, and windows all at once. Also should support Evo, Incredible, and Aria, Eris, and Desire.
First steps:
1. You will need to make sure in windows at least that you have the proper driver for hboot:
http://www.unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php?id=public:windows_hboot_driver_install
2. HTC Sync is BAD news... If you have it, please uninstall if you have issues, or just for spite. It interferes with us communicating to the device randomly, also pdanet, doubletwist etc could cause issues. If it uses USB and you have problems, try disabling/uninstalling until after the reflash is complete.
3. When asked ALWAYS CHOOSE CHARGE ONLY, perhaps you should check remember this...
THE LINK: http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
FAQ: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/unrevoked2
Help I'm stuck at waiting for system to settle
check these common issues:
- You switched your driver to the one from this post? It's NOT identical to the SDK one.
- You don't have any usb applications that might be taking focus while we are working with the phone right?
- Is the SD card present in the device?
- You did give su permenent access when you allowed it in superuser right?

It's coming soon, we are about to test on some users devices. No need to volunteer, we will choose folks out of the incredibleroot irc channel as needed.
Will be available for linux, mac, and windows all at once. Also should support Evo, Incredible, and Desire if we ever get someone with one to help test and set a few things. To clarify it will require that you have root already. If you don't, please proceed with the other method for now to get it until we have a better option (which still is in the works).
This will be the release thread. Subscribe if you like.

Still new to android world. What will this tool actually do ?
Well it's primarily going to allow users with root to get around the nand lock and flash a custom recovery that will allow custom roms easily. As well as modifying system at will by rebooting to recovery with adb enabled inside it.

Will /system be rw while booted in android?
not until our next project completes, a special hboot to enable full nand write. For now we are just enabling it to flash recovery as the next step gets very dangerous.

So we will still have to jump through the same hoops to get into recovery mode? I did it once but can't seem to do it again so i have root access but haven't been able to remove all these crappy sys apps.
no, this will flash a custom recovery that ENABLES adb.... so you get it every time.

I really just want to get root on this phone one time before I die... I have staired at loop.bat so much I'm dreaming in DOS...
Really I had a dream that I got root and passed the shell... I woke up and my wife asked me what was going on I told her I got root she laughed at me and told me I was dreaming. She now makes fun of me calling me a Nerd... She says most guys dream about women and I dream about rooting my Dinc.
I didn't mention to her it was two naked cheerleaders that helped me get root.
Great work guys!

Hello all. If you are as tired of this ODIN method as i am, than you on the same boat. This sucks. But its all we have. So i have made a visual guide to odin. Attached below. Its a JPEG. Here goes.
REMEMBER PEOPLE I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DECIDE TO BLOW UP THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL, WARS, FIGHTS, and in NO WAY responsible for bricking if
Trust me, i have been in this scene 2 years now, since the g1, and i can bet that this phone will continue to blow peoples minds with its capabilities. This ODIN, is pre-historic. But the best way. I know there are 45 other flashing programs, guides, but none of them helped me like i bet this will help you. If you need any more screenshots of the process shoot me an email, or gtalk. Thanks again guys/girs.

I have not used Odin yet as I am new to Android, but I am positive I will at some point.
One thing that would really help this guide would be all the necessary files that you reference. I know they can be found via a search.... but it can be pretty nerv-racking when trying what you need when your device is dying.
Just a suggestion.
Thanks/ Andrew/
You might wanna also add that you need to remove both your sim card and memory card in order for Odin to flash your phone.

+1 It is not necessary to have odin flash your kernel.
maybe mixed results? for me, i cant flash back to stock nor can i flash the kernal without removing both sim and memory card. if i have the sim and memory card inserted it gets stuck at the "zimage" part.
I've had it stick there before too, but I usually just close odin, unplug my phone, open odin again, and plug my phone in again. usually after that it works

Thanks for this. While I felt like I had the steps in my head right for flashing ODIN...It was super helpful to have a pic reference.
does anyone know what the differences are between the 512 pit file and the 803 pit file floating around? Im assuming there different partition size layouts but whats the deal? I guess people have flashed the 803 pit file and it works the same as the 512 but what really changes i have yet to find??
please delete. answer found.
You justg saved my butter! My Bionix butter that is. Thanks guys, you guys are the best
the difference i do know is that the 803 pit file changes your entire system, and the way it runs. It sets it up differently, thats why you need it for generally most Froyo's or deviations of the i9000 2.2 (803.pit).
So other than a number, and a file system change .. not a thing
This was working just fine until I installed Master Rom 1.1 Now I can't use Odin. It'll load like it always did, I go to download mode and get everything set right on Odin and it Go and then it hangs. I've tried this process now 20 times to no avail. Any ideas what's hanging it up?

N7000 on LSZ.DBT Stock ROM, rooted with PHILZ Kernel
now after repair on LM5.TGY not rooted, want to update to LSO.TGY and/or root it only if update not possible
To all the Hardware specialist of the community.
Hope s.o. can help me.
I got a strange repair on my N7000.
Out of the blue (I was reading an ebook, so no flashing no wiping no deleting big files..............) I got a hard brick. My phone didn't boot. After some tries it even didn't switch on.
I went to my local Samsung shop they told me it was a hard brick of the emmc/motherboard . Repair would cost about 2000 RMB (240 Euro).
i already had replaced the screen some month before (1800 RMB) and the audio jack input (400 RMB). Well you all understand how I felt at this point in time. However, my street shop gave me an address for repair for only 500 RMB. I decided to go for it.
They repaired it within 2 hours and all works fine so far. Now I wanted to flash a firmware (update via KIES) and it always stopps in the middle, thank God I could restart it and it works fine.
Calling the shop, what they had done, I got informed that they have put in a part of an GTI9220 ( replacing the broken memory part), as this is supposed to be brick safe. My phone shows in all information screens the N7000. I don't know how they did this. However, it seems that I cannot update with KIES.
Now my question to the community (the Chinese didn't want to give me a clear yes or no, as they are afraid if it bricks again, I might hold them responsible)
Can I flash with ODIN and/or mobile ODIN ?????
If not, can I at least root my phone using either supersu.zip or a philz-kernel to flash via recovery??????????
Does the flashing of a Kernel read/write this famous part of the memory which was broken, or does it just write some data in order grand full access (root rights) does it write just through the system or does it use predefined address blocks of the memory (then I am probably done as the new Hardware may have different addresses)
I am NOT a HW tech guy, but I am a quite experienced user. No problems with flashing and rooting up to now........
So, if s.o. could give me advise on how to update and/or root this f....ashion phone, I would appreciate :crying:
greetings from Sichuan China
(of course I am aware that all your advise will be given without any obligation for the case my phone bricks)

sounds interesting. so what shall I do? do you think i can flash an update or root it.
The point is, yes I know the GTI9220 and the N7000 must be quite close or even the same, but they put GTI9220 hardware into my N7000, so
question: can I root it nad / or update it without getting a brick again?
PS: would you pls tell me what firmware version you are on at the moment?
I couldn't find a DBT (German) ot TGY (HKong) version vor the gti9220

OK, so...I was messing around, and I ended up flashing the wrong boot.img file.
The phone just kind of goes in and out of the LG booting screen, which didn't concern me too much, because...it was still turning on and such.
SO I tried to hook up into the LG Flash tool, and......it didn't work. I put my phone in download mode, and it comes on my computer as a QHSUSB_BULK, and it opens up 15 "portable devices", all of which are not formatted correctly except for one (which comes up as drive E.

Things I can do:
Get into download mode, with crazy folders.
Get into some crazy Korean Screen with three options (Mode On, Mode Off, Cancel)
Turn the Phone on and off
Things I cannot do:
Boot into the OS
Boot into Fastboot
LG Flash Tools
ADB
If you guys want a screenshot of the korean screen, I can get you that. Maybe you can translate more of it, but I was only able to get the mode on and off, and the cancel part. Since I don't know what it does, I can't make it do anything.
If you want the files, lemme know, and I'll upload them.
Hopefully someone knows how I can fix this. Argh....
---EDIT---
Forgot to mention: Sprint Variant, if it makes a difference. I'm in the US. Thanks!

It should be fixable, but going to take some work. This thread will get you going in the right direction.

Going through it now, but virtual machines don't want to play nice for the moment. I'm going to have to fire up the old laptop and hope for the best...
Weeeeeeeeelllllllp.....
...it won't turn on now. I believe it is bricked. Squee.
You didn't use the same files from that link I gave you good you?

Well, I used the .bin files extracted from the TOT files I had before for the sprint gflex. I'm pretty sure that's where I made the mistake.

Yep I think they should have been .img files. I did not think I needed to specify to not use the g2 files from that link, glad you didn't.

Not that it changed the outcome though, sorry to hear. So there's no life now? What about plugged into computer
Sent from my LG-D959 using Tapatalk
Yeah, I saw the difference. *lol* No life in the device at all, my linux mint doesn't discover it anymore. I'm going to try it again when I get home -- had to get to work, damn it.
If it reads it on the computer, which I doubt, but...maaaybe....I'll try it again with some img files. it's ok if it doesn't -- I'll just go to see about replacing it tomorrow.
OK. Plugged it back into the computer, and it comes up as:
Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008
It doesn't show the 15 or so drives, and Linux doesn't read it at all.
LG Flash tool can see it sometimes, but it can't flash anything because it can't read the IMEI or anything on the phone -- fails every time.
Well unfortunately now you f'ed up
HS-USB QDLoader = hard brick
Sorry

Yeppers. It's ok, it's my own fault -- HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION. *lol* Anyway, I'm going to see about what I can find on the net. Maybe I can get QPST or something to work with...something...or something....
Well I hope you find something. Let us know if you do
Sent from my LG-D959 using Tapatalk
I wonder if there's a way to reassign the IMEI and such with CDMA Workshop or QPST...? The LG Flash tool says it can't find the phone, but it reads the phone on the right port.
I take it this method does not apply to a phone that cannot be seen by a pc?
Well...probably not. I still get it showing up as an "unknown USB" device now, lately, but nothing past that. No worries -- I'm just grabbing at straws while waiting for payday.
Need aNew phone it's bricked. I learned my lesson all this flashing is not worth it. My note 2 died the same way

It wont go into fastboot? That korean screen is just the hardware button selector. Pretty much asks you if you want to use your hardware buttons. If you can adb it and get it to reboot thru fastboot then u have a chance.

You simply have to pay attention to what you're doing. If you're into flashing rom's and tinkering, I'd suggest you buy a Nexus device because they're easy to work with and hard to screw up.
I'm enjoying my G Flex just the way it is, there isn't any "must-have" root apps that are worth the trouble of going back to stock, or re-flashing this or that. Just look at all the problems people are having. Plus, I'm paying monthly on this device and have no interest in voiding it's warranty.

That is why I went exclusively to Nexus devices several years ago when I traded in my Vibrant for the Nexus S. Since then I have had 4 Nexus devices and not a one of them have been bricked in any way, after thousands of flashed files have been done to them. On my Nexus 7 I think its impossible to kill it via a bad flash. I think you would need to pull the cable in mid flash of the bootloader for any damage to occur, lol... But for recovery and roms/kernels etc, its near impossible I think.
This is the first non Nexus device in a long time so I think I will stick to stock on it and just root it and do away with the bloat. lol
