Hi all.
I have the AT&T version 7"tab
Already have gingerbread JQ1 and Bell JK3 modem installed.
Everything is up and good.
It was recommended to put on Dip7 kernel for a final step.
I got the file from here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109145&page=27 post number 2
It took me to here where I downloaded the file.
http://www.multiupload.com/STQ0QJ3THX
Now the file is called "galaxytab_kernel-dip.tar.gz"
When I fire up Odin and browse in the PDA button....
NO .tar shows up..
I cannot install this without a .tar & there isnt one in the file.Any-1 know why this file is named with an ending extention of .gz
And how can I load up my tab with the kernell without the .tar.
Thanks to all who reply.
all replies are welcomed and encouraged.
Thanks again.
jh
up-date...
I used 7-zip to un-pack the .tar
Whew.. finally got the .tar..
Now I goto Odin to load it in PDA, pchoose the .tar
push the start button.. and BAM
"Odin communicator has stopped working"
dammn.. I was this close...
Can any-1 help with this problem? thanks alot to all who reads this & thanks again to all who reply..
I am almost done.. but am stuck here..
thanks. jh
I know Odin is working..
I just re-flashed the modem just to make sure that Odin is working.
I re-downloaded the kernel .tar.gz..
also redownloaded and uninstalled & re-installed 7-zip
got a fresh .tar..
STILL get "Odin communicator has stopped working".
Id really like to put this kernel on..
any ideas?? Please..
thank you..
jh
Go get the CWR file and save it to your internal sd card. Then boot into recovery (power + vol up), and flash zip from sd card.
you can also pull the files out of the tar (should be zImage if it's just a kernel you're trying to flash) and use Heimdall to flash the kernel.
There are 2 cwr files attached. The top one keeps giving me and"unsuccessful download" when i capture the image with my price scanner.
The bottom one DID d/l correctly.
Is that the one to use? Thanks alot for your time and patience.
Jim h
At the bottom of Dip7's post there are two files - the top file is the cwr file to flash.
Ok. Rangercaptian. Ill go after that one?
Ok I got the "Recovery_install_pda_zImage_1-4Ghz_v_3.0.2.zip[click for QR code]
BUt Im at about 25% on the battery.
Should I wait till Ive gotten a full charge??
Thanks alot, Men!
jh
Boy oh boy.... I wish I knew why this is so dammn difficult for me...
It's been 10 days or more that I have been trying to get this kernel on my tab...
NOW, I d/l'ed the qr code for recovery_install_pda_zImage_1-4Ghz_v_3.0.2.zip[click for qr code]
using bar code scanner
& I confirm that the file is sitting on my sd card using 'my files'
So I boot into recovery mode..
select apply update from sd card
choose external sd card
downloads
guess what?? It's not there... nothing.. only a " .../" type blue line.
I dont know what's going on here..
dammned if I know...
I delete everything & re-do it all..
same result... nothing there to flash in recovery mode..
& I cant find it in the menues...
So if any-1 has any ideas on what is going on,
I sure would appreciate any help.
it's bugging me that I cannot get this kernel going on my tab....
thanks to all who rpely....
thanks again..

"Install update from sd card" will look for "update zip" and not any other zip file.
Ok...are you rooted and CWM is installed? If so then choose "install zip from sd card" on the CWM recovery. If the zip file you have contains a folder called "META-INF" then it should install without problem.Without this file then it will not install.
Ahhhh. . I see. . . I am NOT rooted. Thats the problem?
can you link me up to the easiest way to root?
Thanks for your reply!
Jh
ok.. I found this for rooting..

gonna give it a shot....
Thanks, jh
Up-date:
the link worked & I got the GT rooted.
very fast & simple.
Then booted into recovery and installed the kernel..
It was there THIS time!
SUCCESS!!!!
thanks for all the help, men!
Now.. lets see what this kernel will do... starting at 100% battery.
Now to explore this 'video call' thing..
thanks again to all who replied and commented.!
I couldnt have done it with out every-1's help!

And i will be able to help others as they come along.
I realize that this mod is a year old already, but i just got mtg GT a month ago
and this is the coolest thing ever.
Yesterday i had a phone conversation going AND was txting pictures at the same time!
And they were receiving the txts
Everything was working simotainiously and flawlessly.
I love this thing and my friends hate it.
They tease me when i hold it to my head.
Harass me all you want.
I can do all this on a large screen even WITHOUT wi-fi !
CWM
i have a quick question,
the newer Gingerbread 2.3.5 that came out,
can i flash using CWM? just update.ZIP ?
Thanks

Hello everyone. Tonight, nothing works on my AT&T Captivate (used on Fido here).
First, I am trying to flash Darky Official Port 7. I have copied the ZIP on my SD card and successfully boot into Recovery (CWM), but when I choose to browse for the ROM zip, I don't see it, even if I know it is there! What is happening there? I have tried everything and I can't. Find. That. *&%?% ZIP file. In the past, I have rooted and flashed many ROMs (long time lurker...), but this time.....
In desperation, I have tried to use ODIN to revert to stock; and I can't get into download mode. No matter what I do, I always finish into Recovery instead of Download Mode.
Any ideas anyone? I just want to revert to stock and then to Darky.
PS: Oh by the way, I am on a 2.2 moded AT&T ROM, but I don't know which one, since in "About Phone", the info is erroneous (kept the info from a Cognition ROM I was trying, the 1.7 Unhelpful Kernel one).

Darky 7 is dead, go for 8.0.1. You're positive that you have a. CWM recovery and b. the zip on the internal sd card? To get in to download, you press both volume buttons (but not power) and plug in the usb cable (but don't press power)

Yep .... Could it be something to do with my kernel? I read something about "2" kernels and "3" kernels? It's easy to get confused with the many many threads here, often it is hard trying to see if the solution explained is the one pertaining to your own problem or not...

If you are able to reboot into recovery you should be able to find a way to get into download mode using odin 1.3 (not the one-click one) and adb tools...

My problem is actually a bit worse. Well, maybe. I'm stuck in the, "phone ! pc" loop. For other phones, you can just remove the battery, and then press the three buttons, but for the tab, since the battery can't be removed, I have no idea how to fix it.
You can try this, though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939360
Here's another thread that may help you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888071
1. Go to http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-p1000.htm and download the firmware for your device. (you must register first)
2 download the flashing guide and make sure you follow all the steps (without the part to remove the battery) http://www.samfirmware.com/SVC Android/P1000 Flashguide.pdf

i have the solution on your problem igot that phone and pc icon...
all u have to do is flash the file
*open odin then connect your tab
*click repartition
*click pit then select the file u downloaded
*then click start then that's it just wait for it to pass then it'll now boot
the phone ! pc icon is also download mode so u wont have to do the download mode just connect it to you computer and make sure odin detects your tab
hope it will work for you sorry for the bad instruction
Tried your solution didnt work
Mine didn't work with Odin too. It worked with Heimdall instead.
1. First, I downloaded ROTO JMI from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939360
2. Press the power + volume down button. It'll still have the phone ! PC icon, but it will already trigger itself to go to download mode.
3. Unzip and then extract the tar from the ROTO JMI.
4. Using heimdall, put everything inside the extracted file to its appropriate filed. You won't need the moveend.
5. Flash. Do NOT remove your tab.
6. It'll auto-reboot
Very busy at the moment, really appreciate your help will try your solution later and post results

When you unzip a compressed file, you will see a number of files inside like cahce, factory data, etc. Just put them in the corresponding field in Heimdall. As for the zImage file, put it under the image field.
Edit: @andrew - mine was in the logo for like 5 minutes. Even up to now it still takes around the same time to boot.

I just got this tab and like every other android i get I rooted it. I used superoneclick -- worked fine. then downloaded cwm and flashed the recovery. of course when i went into recovery it was 3e so i couldnt actually use cwr without the bypass fix. Anyway -- i used some recovery fix -- which i think was for a vibrant -- wasn't thinking. Once it rebooted into recovery it showed some yellow letters then went blank. The computer still recognizes it but the tab won't boot. i can reset it by turning it off and on but it only shows tmobile splash and the yellow letters scrolling in recovery then goes blank again. please help. i've been reading everything but no one seems to have had this problem.
thank you very much

i figured there would be some manual way to reflash the recovery or maybe complete firmware with a recovery built in. it will still go into download mode -- like i said the computer still recognizes it but I just don't know where to start. ive never used odin and not a pro at adb/sdk but i can usually follow directions pretty well. i've rooted g1's, mytouch 3g fenders slides, inspires, atrix, vibrant, captivates so i'm not giving up yet. i know someone is willing to help.
from the off position, when you press and hold volume down then a moment later without letting up from volume down also hold power button until lights turn on, what does it do?
download all below zips, and unzip them
run it usb driver. say yes to everything. plug in tab to computer in download mode. let it install tab drivers
unplug tab.
open odin
Watch the first box on the left. ID:COM
plug in tab to comp in download mode.
That box should light up yellow, that means your tab in connected and ready to go.
place unzipped stock rom in PDA.
Press Start.
When done it should say all threads completed, and your tab should restart on its own.
Let it boot, and welcome back to stock Tmobile
uploads are taking a bit, be patient.
Do you want stock 2.2, or 2.3?
yes -- it goes into download mode
sounds promising -- thank you -- i will keep you updated on the progress.
prefer 2.2 where it was.
thanks so much

ok download stock rom froyo and not Gingerbread
where can i find froyo version?
Well guys....i think this problem stems from me prematurely removing the usb cord. I Understand that. But here is the other couple of predicaments. lol Ok i'm on ICS Stunna 4.3 ......well after something went wrong i'm unable to "repair" my internal storage. Everything still works smooth....but i can't add things to my internal card. Every time i hook up to the computer it says it needs to scan and fix the card.Well the problem is starts to fix it.....but never does....progress bar never finishes. Tried this on 3 different computers. Nothing. So try to install a different rom....i have some on my internal and external. Always aborts in cmw....never finishes. So on top of all this Stunna has started acting odd. Likely read errors.....but problem is i can't switch roms! lol I have tried everything. I was wondering should i format both cards? But if i do that how can i back everything up if i can't access my card? Any help would be appreciated guys. Hoping i don't have to Odin back to stock.
Cliffs- Internal storage won't repair on any computer-Can't install anything in CMW because of it
I have the exact same problem now, as you do. CWM can't install any .zip files, I can't flash Abyss kernel, so it's just stuck in that end.
I installed ICS Stunner 4.5 coming from GB with full wipe. This happened to me after I tried to copy some files over to external SD Card and it failed, seemed like the phone froze (SOD), so I figured flashing another modem would do the trick (read it in ICS Stunner thread's 1st post). Tried to transfer the file over a cable, but same thing happened. After rebooting I just grabbed it from dropbox and installed the modem successfully. I went ahead to try and fix the mounting problem, so I plug in the cable and it offers me to scan and fix both partitions (internal and external). External card finishes successfully, but not the internal one. And after that I'm in the same situation as OP.
Any ideas anyone?
Enable usb debugging(setting-appl-development)
Connect to pc
Select to copy file to fr computer from notification
You will find separate drive letter for int n ext card
Rt click on int sd card letter n format(you can backup imp data to pc b4 this)
Hope it shud b fixed

Gonna try it now. Have lots of pictures to backup first tho
EDIT: Same thing happens as with scan and fix procedure. It starts and just sits there, nothing happens. When I try to stop "USB Storage in use" it just shows the spinner and hangs in there. Only holding the power button helps solve this. My guess is something in the internal SD card partition is broken... just can't say what or how to fix it.

Same problem^^^^ Not sure what to do about all this
Short story:
Formatting didn't work.
Long story:
Okay, so following the idea to format the internal sd card's partition, I achieved it not through Windows format dialog, but through the half-broken CWM. Both my SD Cards were formated (internal and external) in the process. So since I used the external one for backing up important info I had to use [email protected] UNDELETE to get it back (after booting to ICS). In the process the native SD Card mount service seemed like broken, I had to perform a few hard resets. Hangs seemed to occur whenever I tried writing to one of the cards. I downloaded multi-mount SD card app from Play Store and transfered AbyssKernel's .zip and now when I try to install it from CWM it says
Installing: /sdcard/AbyssNotekernel42RedTouchOriginalLogo.zip

I don't know if this will help or not but give it a try.
Enter into the download mode and flash any stock firmware using PC Odin. This way you don't need to access any of the cards. After flashing stock ROM, try fixing the internal SD again and if it still doesn't fix, send in your note to Samsung for repairs.
Sounds too simple to be working though but worth a shot.

Well for now the phone works, but it's stuck on ICS Stunner. I was thinking to use PC Odin or Mobile ODIN, but what if it doesn't work because the partition is corrupted in some way (as it is now, because CWM can't flash anything).
I'd like to hear more insight before I go the odin-way

I'm downloading an old GB rom myself..
While I am, I can share a thought: I feel that ICS is not yet ready.. at least not for me. Feels nice and fast but buggy USB transfers is a big no-go for me. Also after trying AOSP derived ROM, I decided to wait for a good Samsung edition ICS because all the little tweaks add a good feeling to the experience, I tend to miss them on AOSP or AOKP or w/e

Oooh thanks! Didn't know this. So now I'm pretty confident because if flashing conventionally fails I'll just repartition and get rid of all the partition errors. What do you know, I feel like I learned something new today
SOB! Just did the whole Odin to stock thing and i am stuck in a bootloop! lol
I think my problem is used a .tar instead of .pit.....where can i get the .pit?
Ye same happened to me. Reboot to recovery (volume up + home + power) and do a data wipe/factory reset. After that it boots. Rooted and flashed CWM just fine after that, copying my old GB nandroid backup to SD card as I write

Glad it helped!
Too bad for me, since I had recovered the latest nandroid with undelete software (cus external sd was accidentally formatted) and now I'm getting a MD5 mismatch Guess I might as well start fresh now, since the last good backup is like 2 months old... Another lesson for me.. always keep your nandroids safe
So everything fine now??

Yeah. After quite a time of failed attempts we succeeded. ODIN > Stock GB ROM > ROOT + CMW > Anything you like. No re-partitioning was needed in the process
i have same problem but more complicated. iam on stock GB and its happened after flash bad kernel
the case in detail's :
i flashed wrong kernel on my device previously and now when iam trying to flash another kernel even use ODIN or CWM everything going well and completed but when check i found the old kernel still. i tried many times with same results and no error .
- system can read/write/mount the internal memory but the new pasted files deleted after restart. external card behave normal and i can preform flash using files pasted on it.
- in CWM wipe/format/flash operations running well but no effect on device even restarted to CWM only.
- device has yellow triangle. is it effected?
- the devil kernel stacked in machine is 2.6.35.7-gb4846d2 [email protected] #2 and the build no. is jpkj4
system running normal but cannot keep any changes i do if restarted.
-system rooted and no problem with root
-can access adb
- ODIN behave same CWM, operation work but no change.
can anyone help me guys?
i did repartition the memory useing PIT for note butno change also
thank you all in advance

Well first you are going to have to achieve either recovery or download mode.
Recovery: hold volume up + home and the hold power until the first screen pops up. Keep holding for about half a second. Which longer than instant lol
Download: same as above but volume down.
If you get to recovery try a wiping cache and dalvik. Then try boot up. If that doesn't work then you'll have to wipe/factory reset from recovery.
If that doesn't work then either download a stock firmware by Ramad on the general forum or go sammobile.com or type in darky in Google and go to his website and navigate to full releases. From there click on the latest for your phone sgs i9000. Scroll down to instructions and look for the link for 10.2 re or something similar. Its the Odin flashable rom. Alternatively just look for a from you like and flash it. If you have recovery you may be able to use CWM flash able zips otherwise you will need Odin flash able files from the places above.
Darky rom will retain root and is a custom from so it'll be easier to move to another custom from if you flash that.
That cover everything

I dont know which stock firmware to go for a while ago i had same problem as im having now and could not get a decent download for stock firmware any pointers in the right direction ??
can you get a Jig from a friend?
it can get you into download mod without button combination..
here is some video that might help to understand how to make one, it has instructions on the info.
also, in xda http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551

Yes you can use a jig that would be easiest and best for the future in-case you run into this again...
However i don't understand why download or recovery is not working if you are already on custom, you have achieved it before right? If not use a video to help.
However if the standard methods do not work then there are sill some tricks..
1. Take out the battery>>>Hold the button combo>>>Insert battery whilst holding combo>>>When the boot screen appears (Samsung GT-I9000) hold for about half a second/whole second then release>>>Wait. If it continues to boot loop again then take out battery
2. From task manager close all Kies apps/processes>>>Put your usb cable in>>>plug in your phone>>>hold the combo>>>Wait.
3.Take out battery>>>Do all of 2>>>When the USB is connected to phone whilst holding the combo insert battery>>>Wait.
4. Repeat 3 with charger instead of the USB cable
If none of that works then yes i think you will need to make or buy the jig. (Or borrow if you can). But also do a search as im not sure if i covered all the tricks. There used to be a thread on it in the general section, try search for it.

Sammoblie.com, [Ramad] Stock Firmware or Darky 10.2RE
Sammobile.com is straight forward. Click on smartphone, then android etc. Just follow the clicks then you select the FW that is relevant to you based on country and provider... If use the Ramad link then you will need your csc code which will be retrievable from the sammobile site its at the bottom.
Good luck

1. Ultimate ROM is it ICS? if yes install samsung drivers.exe from the following link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956
2. Download stock ROM for your phone from samfirmware.com or alternatively you can use Darky's ROM
3. you will need Odin to flash the ROM it is included with Darky's ROM as is a read me file with instructions.
4. Start Odin make sure no kies processes are running if installed. If they are running Kill the processes
5. Boot phone to download mode using jig. Remove jig from phone. Plug USB cable into phone. wait for odin to detect phone then flash.
NOTE you may have to Flash once with re-partition ticked and then once without to get the rom completely booted.
Once running it is suggested to perform factory reset

Stock ROM would be what the phone was shipped with. ie carrier branded OS etc.
Darky's should work or from Samfirmware.com once registered select firmwares. Type "smartphone" OS "android" model "your model" region "your region"
you should then be left with a selection of firmwares for your handset/region
download the suitable version

From what you describe I will assume that your computer is running windows 7. This being the case the file downloaded needs to be extracted so that you are left with 1 file called JVG_JV5_JV4
You say that you are now left with file called JVG_JV5_JV4. Have you downloaded a PIT file? If not find 512 PIT at the bottom of this post.
Once PIT file is downloaded extract file.
Select PIT and add pit file
Select PDA and then select the file extracted JVG_JV5_JV4
Then flash.
As stated before you may have to flash with repartition selected once and then once with out.
This should get you going again.

when you are saying that it is doing nothing is odin flash failing ??
Flash completing and then phone not booting??
If the stock ROM is not working try Darky's 10.2 as it will generally work when other methods fail.
Mate , I can not thank you enough i tried again after i last put message on here and all done i now have 2.3.6 and as far as i am concerned all ok now. I did have to get into recovery mode after i used Odin for mob to start up and just did a system rebbot or should i say factory rebbot. All ok now and alot of songs i had were all still on memory card ok had to re install apps i had before but hey ho.
