[Q] Flashing HELP PLEASE!!

Hi,
This is my second time flashing a rom. I own a rogers captivate and I rooted and flashed to Darky's v7.0 (2.2 Froyo) NO WIPE.
I want to change the rom to Doc's ROM JPY V6.2 CE.
All i know is that I have to copy the .zip folder in sd card folder and flash it using rom manager. Do I have to do the same to flash with this one?
I have read all over the forum and I read that I am supposed to flash back to stock 2.1 and then flash again to a different rom(any other rom). Someone also told me that if I have a NO WIPE version of rom installed then I don't need to flash back to 2.1. Is this true? Can someone please confirm this?
1. Should i just download the rom and just flash through rom manager(if yes, then skip q#2) or change to stock 2.1 first?
2. If i have to change back to stock 2.1, i think I have to use something called ODIN. Can someone explain me the process please? and I dont know where to get stock rogers 2.1 rom. I looked all over the forum.
3. I do not want to overclock my phone cpu. The main post on DOC's rom says that I have to flash a kernel through CWM after first boot. I dont know what CWM means or how to use it. Any instructions?
4. Should I install the Wipe version or the NON-wipe version? and what is the difference? I like changing roms once in a while and I might change it again but I dont know which one I should use.
5. Is this a 2.1 eclair rom or 2.2 froyo? How do i figure it out without installing?
I would really appreciate if anyone can help me with these questions.

I have always just booted into recovery mode with CWM and flash the zip that way as it works for any rom i have tried so far. I have rom manager but never used it to load a rom since CWM works flawlessly everytime for me.

The simple answer is if your changing ROMs (i.e. Cognition to Perception) - should flash back to stock then load the new ROM.
If your just updating an existing ROM and it has the "no-wipe" version? Then you should be able to run the *.zip provided following the instructions given (most likely through ROM Manager/CWM)

I currently have a 2.2 galaxy s firmware witch i got using kies. I added the voodoo lagfix kernel to it.As i have read in the description, clockwork mod doesn't work with voodoo, so i'm stuck using odin for updating.
So, for the question: Is it safe to upgrade to 2.2.1 from Kies? And, moreover, how can I flash a costum rom like darky's or cyanogen? (i'm not sure about them).
P.S. How can I come back to stock 2.2 and delete the Voodoo kernel

create a folder within the Voodoo folder called "disable_lagfix" then restart the phone, it should convert back to RFS from EXT4 and return the rom to normal (ie. no lagfix applied)
once this is done, download whatever rom you want (JPY is the latest uk OFFICIAL relese i believe) or create your desired rom within Doc's Kitchen....

Yes otherwise it would not be offered by Samsung .

You should be SURE before flashing custom ROM. Read and collect as much information from their thread. This will minimize the risk for you to repeat same problems others have had...

[Q] Installing SimplyHoney Full Package and CSC Package

Hi,
I would really like to install latest version of Simply Honey 3.9 ROM.
I believe I understand how to install the ROM.
However, not quite sure how to install the additional packages, such as the Full Package and local CSC packages.
In addition, I am running a Pilotx ROM (Froyo 2.2.1) , should I cancel some lag fixes applied on time of that installation?

Have a baseband S5570XXKA5
with kernel 2..6.32.9-perf
and build number FROYO.XWKAC
from dialing *#1234# got this info:
PDA: S5570XWKAC
PHONE: S5570XXKA5
CSC: S5570TMNKB1
Already have a CWM (ClockworkMod Recovery v4.0.0.5)
tried to backup stock rom several times I attach two log files that I extracted.
I am unable to mount (even mannualy) some partitions (if I am reading the logs correctly...)
Does this mean I can't backup stock ROM?
If I do can backup, how should I do it?
Can these errors be related to the fact that I am not using the most recent version of CWM?
I also have another version of CWM for my device. This is a zip file with version 5.0.2.6.
But, as it is a zip file with no IMG file in it, I am afraid that it would harm the phone if I would use it on the CWM recovery that is accessible through boot.
Is it possible to use CWM 4.0.0.5 to update itself?
I tried to use Rom Manager to update CWM (and to backup the rom, and you may very well check that because the names of the logs are different) RM didn't even recognize the already installed CWM, let alone update it or backup the stock rom...

Any help would be very much appreciated.

But with the info I gave, can I have the 'stock' ROM from samfirmware???
And just some doubt: how did samfirmware got the so called stock roms in the first place?

Samfirmware probably could have ripped from Kies update I guess. Not sure though!

here some infos on how i made a backup of my roms...
only need to say that you cannot spli CSC and /system, as in original ROMS.
another way can be to check with "check fus downloader" for you rom...

Welcome! to xda-forums. If I can guess it correct then I know you ( I don't want to name you here for your privacy concern).
So, after some research around, I found it very difficult to find a firmware for your TMN device. However, I suggest you try another sim card and see if your device is sim unlocked or not.
If you phone is sim locked either wait for TMN to upgrade your rom or just unlock it. Also, since you said you have CWM v4, is it in Froyo that you have to the rom? If yes then I suggest you have CWM v5 and try to do a nandroid backup [I believe v5 will work since v4 worked]. If you are already on GB rom then try flashing a custom rom.

Yes you got it right! (It's who you think it is...)
Now, yes, it's on froyo that I have the CWM (4.0.0.5 that you have on your blog on the tools section, I found that out by comparing md5 hash from the one that I had downloaded from bunnybugs_007 tutorial).
But I am curious to what makes you think version 5 would work on my froyo? Isn't v5.0.2.6 designed for GB or later??? And also isn't v.5.0.2.6 a buggy version?
Summing up: You say I should try v5.0.2.6 out. Should I use my zip file (which I downloaded from clockworkmod site), and use the option '(..)update.zip' from the CWM recovery itself, or should I flash your recovery.tar.md5 that you linked on your blog, doing it with ODIN?
This question is puzzling me: can CWM be used to 'update' itself on its own recovery mode???? Am almost sure it is impossible... and scares me to try...
Besides, the CWM zip file that I've gotten from Koush site doesn't have an IMG file in it, but only folders and such...
Finally I am sure I have the android simlocked (because I've just checked it)...
Will try then to unlock if that is the scenario...
If the carrier would be more thoughtful I would be less troubled...

[Q] Rooted Samsung Galaxy GT-I9000M - Can't flash ROM's

Just rooted my Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000M (Bell) using Root Unlock. Have superuser and ROM Manager installed (recently found that ROM manager incompatible for flashing new ROM's) Error msg - E: failed to verify whole file signature
My understanding now is that I would be better rooting using CF-Root with a customized kernel for my Gingerbread 2.3.3 build (haven't found one yet but see several options for 2.3.5)
Question: Assuming that I can find and install an appropriate kernel via Odin, do I need to restore my phone to OEM (unrooted) before I can head down the path of a CF-Root or can I install a new kernel on my phone as it exists in its rooted condition?
Any info or direction would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to flash a new ROM anyways, you can just flash a kernel via Odin. You will have to wipe everything before the ROM flash.

Do I need a kernel specific to my firmware version? Or can I install say, a Gingerbread kernel of a different version like 2.3.5? I see several options for downloads for this one, but not for the 2.3.3 version that I have currently installed. There was one link I found for a 2.3.3 kernel but it was no longer available on megaupload.
If I can and do opt for another kernel, when you say wipe everything... that includes the partition as well?

Thusfar, it seems to be a bit intensive for this particular Galaxy model compared to the all the success stories I'm seeing on later phones and OS versions.
