[Q] Trouble moving to GingerDX - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, i decided to swap Android to GingerDX since it looks much better..
I was able to root it, but CWM couldn't be installed as when i'm prompted to select my model, it's not in the list. So i installed xRecovery instead...
xRecovery works fine as far as i can tell, but when i try to install GingerDX, this happens:
v0.12: Freeze at the static logo
v0.16 and above: Animated bootscreen results in a loop
I think i missed something, but i can't figure out what...
Help?

Try installing CWM Recovery with this toolbox and remember, from GDX 014 and up, you need CWM to install it, not xRecovery.

Ah, i missed that, anyway:
Do i need to mount the sdcard and how long is a normal time for such thing to be installed ?

When you switching from one rom to another you need full wipe.
If you change only version of same rom it is mostly unneeded.

I left x8 toolbox running with the sdcard mounted for about 2 hours and it still said "waiting for device..."
How long shall i expect it to take?
And what did i do wrong this time?
(While adding xRecovery on the phone i also updated the baseband, but i dunno if it's still applied.)

I was able to get it working yesterday, and it works much smoother than stock android..

[Q] tips for x8?

Hello dear XDA forum!
I'll start with an apology, I believe there are answers to my questions, but I'm just to confused to understand everything since there are answers all over the place. And I couldn't find anyone having the exact same problem as me.
So, I'm fresh to the Android OS(was on symbian before) and is awesome for now. I rooted the phone once, but then I couldn't get Wi-Fi to work and tried to hard reset it, couldn't turn it on anymore. Did a software reinstall and tried to root it again.
I understand what Superuser does roughly, but I have a feeling I don't use the benefits of the rooted phone fully. For instance, ROM Manager is not working at all, downloaded a ROM, starts, resets the phone, when the phone turns on it's like nothing ever happened, so a little help with that would be appreciated.
The second thing that is driving me crazy is the low space on the phones internal memory, and I just can't figure out how to install stuff on the SD card, I have "Root All to SD", but the thing just won't work.
Any useful tips for a new rooted x8 user are very very appreciated!
Thank you, HeLLaTec.
Well, im new to into this things, and i have this X8 since friday. And im exactly in the same place as you, i just rooted my phone, and installed on it the xRecovery, and made a backup of everything just in case. You should do that too.
There's a guide on this same forum for you to follow and install xRecovery.
Goodbye!
if you want to change your rom , use xrecovery , search the thread for install xrecovery on your phone.
then change your rom with xrecovery, dont forget to backup your old rom with xrecovery too,
if you want to put your app to sd card, use link2sd on market, and its free. but you must partition your sd card and follow the instruction in link2sd.
clear?
Thanks for the info, but looks like I'm having some issues with installing xRecovery, I followed a guide on how to install it. Downloaded 3 files, moved them to my sd card then used "Root Explorer" to move it to system/bin. The guide said that I can access xRecovery by holding the back button while the phone is turning on(the boot screen), but absolutely nothing happens, the phone just turns on.
Any suggestions on how to get that going?
Thanks, HeLLaTec!
Don't hold back button, you must press it repeatedly when white SonyEricsson text appears
Thanks a lot, turned out I didn't actually install xRecovery, but now I had it installed, went into it. Wiped everything, and now the phone won't go past the first Sony Ericsson logo.
Any suggestions?
open xrecovery
goto partition tools
select mount/system
then browse your sd card put a rom in it
you can download it from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079463
then go back
then select install custom.zip
select custom zip from sdcard
browse the rom select yes to install
here u go u got ur rom installed
Ok that helped a lot, fixed my phone now, managed to root it, put on xrecovery and root explorer, and now followed the link. Installed the ROM, but it just played an froyobread animation for a few minutes and now it just froze and nothing is happening... ideas?
Thanks, HeLLaTec.
Pull battery, enter xrecovery and do a full wipe and wipe dalvik cache and cache partition, Froyobread will take a few mins to start 1st time. Did you make sure your baseband is 15? this can cause some problems.
Ok, I'll try to do that. Can you please tell me if the wipeing will remove the root and xRecovery and everything?
And how do I figure out what "baseband" do I have?
Thanks for the reply!
No, the wipe will just remove any user data left behind from old rom. If Froyobread boots then just go to settings, about phone and check that baseband number ends with 015, if its 06(i think) then you need to flash new baseband(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976538) kernel should be 2.6.29
If Froyobread wont boot then restore backup from xrecovery of stock rom and follow the steps above to check baseband.
Its good practice to wipe after installing new rom. DONT full wipe if you upgrade Froyobread to a newer version if you want to keep your apps and data, cache partition, battery stats(charge to 100%) and dalvik can always safely be wiped.

[Q] Loop reboot when installing custom roms

What i did before installing a custom rom:
I rooted my phone using superoneclick method.
Then installed xrecovery V0.1. (with busybox and charm*something)
Made a backup of the original room using Xrecovery
How did i install the custom roms and what happend:
Renamde gingerxd v13 to update.zip and place it on sdcard.
Wiped cache and factory reset(fullwipe).
Install update.zip with Xrecovery.
(after my first attemp failed, i tried to wipe cache and factory reset after installing the room too)
Reboot phone.
Phone goes into reboot loop. First sony ericsoon, then the logo of whatever custom room i'm trying to install.
I tried the MiniCM7-2.0.7 (source)
Then i tought, what if i downloader a back from another phone? i got Floyo 2.2.5 (source)
Restoring this backup too got me into a reboot loop.
Final question(and probably the supidest one if the answer is yes)
Do i need to unlock the bootloader to install a custom room? The guides i used didn't mention it at all, and since it may brick my device beyong xrecovery's help i'd like a straight answer before attempting it.
I tried to make this post as clear as possible and maybe someone can point out if im missing something.
Very important thing: Did your baseband end with 015? If no, that's why you are having these problems.
And no, you don't need to unlock the Bootloader to install Custom Roms.
It ends in 006. Thanks ill be reading on flashing a baseband and report back. PCcompanion says my phone is up do date so i'll be using this. If you have a better alternative let me know.
^^
Edit: Is there a way to configure pcc to make the update for me? Like say im from another country were the update is available?
Use Flashtool, go here
Thanks Chris95X8. my phone is now running 2.3.5 gingerdx rom. everything works. The only thing that's driving me nuts is the notification i get when i lose signal. Any way to fix this?
Sadly it didnt work for me... I have tried out flashing basebands but it wont work. still looping around. makes me crazy.

Are you sure that you flashed the right baseband?
If you have, maybe try to boot phone without the SD card in it..

Xrecovery unable to enter!!

tried to use xrevcovery to install froyopro today but i cant enter xrecovery , when i see the SE i spammed back but it just hangs the phone so i remove the battery and tried again for like 5 times but nothing happened , then i try to enter my gingerdxx fearing it might got corrupted but it's still fine ...but why cant i enter xrecovery?
Really? I couldn't enter xRecovery too when I was on GDX v018, v019 and v020.
Just install another CWM ROM if you can enter CWM.
but iwas able to use xrecovery just a few days / hours ago ..and now i cant ..is there a prolbem with my xrecovery? i cant enter CWM also and ccwm (installed version ) don't have x8 option in it's list T.T ...without xrecovery i cant backup my phone anymore!! is there any alternative or solution? just wondering ...is there a diff between xrecovery and cwm?
tohno ... since you wrote in another thread that you installed ROM Manager ...
ROM MANAGER IS NOT MEANT FOR THE XPERIA X8!
This program is ONLY for genuine CyanogenMod ROMs on a selected range of devices... so... that should actually answer your question why you can't select the X8 in the list of devices.
As for being unable to enter xRecovery ...
a) GingerDX comes with Dual-Recovery by default. This means that BOTH, xRecovery and ClockworkMod recovery, are already installed. You DO NOT need to manually install any of them ... if you do, or did, you will only wreck the installed ones.
b) xRecovery does NOT work on the LinuxDX kernel, and will most likely also not work on all the other custom kernels as well as they don't have xRecovery built into the kernel but only CWM.
Conclusion: If you're on GingerDX and already messed around with the recoveries ... re-flash GingerDX and full-wipe.
If you're on Stock 2.1.1.A.0.0 or 2.1.1.C.0.0 use Flashtool to inject xRecovery into the ROM.
EDIT: Another reason why xRecovery may not work... any chance you messed with busybox?
If you updated the default busybox version that ships with GingerDX - or the original xRecovery installation - you may face problems!
confused a little...but i was able to enter recovery many times before when i was still using GDX
abou a) well i need xrecovery to install GDX in the 1st place...so it's a must for me to install xrecovery
b) i never messed with the kernel!
so i guess i have to reflash then...but how to or what is reflash?? is it means i have to do the xrecovery process all over again?
Depends on what you did ...
If you somehow messed around with the files of the recoveries in your current GingerDX (or whatever else) ROM installation you better re-flash GingerDX (or whatever ROM you're currently using) to undo the changes you may have done to the OS. This means: reboot into CWM and simply re-flash update-GingerDX-v020.zip
i cant even enter CMM!! i click reboot to CWM but then it just reboots like normal ...
help plz i really need to enter CMW and xrecovery ...

I've never used FlashTool but would that work?
Leave a thanks if I helped!
not sure...i dunno whats flash tool anyways >.< n still when i try to enter CMw or xrecoery my phone just hangs ...so i take out the battery
reflash ur firmware and root with superoneclick
whill i lose my mod if i do that?
even i havent face situation to use flashtool yet,i guess so,but since u sAid u cant enter into cwm/xrecovery anymore so flash ur phone and u can root again and install ur rom, root with superoneclick
hey guys, I got a small problem. I want to restore my data onto a new ROM without restoring system settings. Is this possible using xrecovery? Because when I restore data, even the system settings I had on my previous ROM gets restored, and I can't change the setting manually on the new ROM because it doesn't have that particular function in the new ROM.....thanx in advance

[Q] x8 new ROM problem, need help

Hi guys, I'm having trouble with new ROM installation. I've been using Gingercruzt ROM since last spring with stock kernel. Bootloader is not unlocked, I've only rooted the phone. It's been working fine until I decided that I want to try something new today. I downloaded the GingerDX rom and installed it with CWM. Everything went fine and I rebooted the system. The phone didn't start, it got stuck on the SE logo. I couldn't enter CWM or xRecovery anymore. It bricked. Using SEUS I brought back the stock rom. I rooted the phone again, installed newer version of CWM from the toolkit, etc. I downloaded the zip again, installed it again - it bricked the phone the same way. Then I tried with two different roms - FroyoPro and Free Dom experience with full wipes on everything before installing - same thing, doesn't start. I was able to enter xRecovery with FroyoPro but no CWM and it get stuck at rom's loading screen.
Help please, what happened to my phone Why doesn't it load a ROM like it did yesterday?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, I cleared all the possible caches, system and other folders. I even formated my sd card, just in case...
I downloaded all the right roms for stock kernel, all three of them. As I said, I've done this before and it worked from first try.
Thanks for trying to help me!

You should not format /system, cause you are actually removing recovery+rom
& are you sure that froyopro supports stock kernel?

try to redownload the rom. flash it again after a full wipe, then reboot.
signature under repair
I cleared the system folder before flashing a new ROM just to make sure I have deleted the stock ROM.
I tried with three different new ROMs, none of them started. Strange thing... everything goes well with the install and then it just won't turn on.
Do you think it's going to be different If I try to unlock the bootloader and flash nAa's kernel? I don't really want to do that but the phone is manufactured before the 29th week so it's capable.
are you sure it doesnt turn on?,first boot may take some minutes...
Yeah, I know, I've left it for more than 15 minutes with any of the tried roms.
I think I should write down the steps I'm taking after the flash back to stock rom with SEUS.
1. Activating debugging mode and unknown applications.
2. I already have the Android SDK, adb server and drivers from before so I open SuperOneClick and root the phone. Busybox is installed and Superuser is on. Everything goes smoothly during the process.
3. Using x8toolkit I install xRecovery and CWM via Dualrecovery.
4. Reset and entering CWM. Full wipe, install from zip, installation goes without problems and says - Go on buddy, restart and start using
5. Reset, Sony Ericsson logo and that's it. Nothing more happens. With GingerDX and Free Dom experience I can't enter recovery any more. FroyoPro's starting screen shows up after the SE logo but that's all it does - it never goes any further. I can enter xRecovery but no CWM.
I tried installing roms with both xRecovery and CWM - all the same. Could it be some physical damage even though the stock rom runs perfectly well? I don't know, I'm a bit desperate as the battery lasts half a day with the stock rom.
Just to end this thread, nothing worked for me so I unlocked the bootloader, flashed nAa's kernel and got a new ROM compatible with it - it works like a charm now. Thanks for your support guys!

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 (GT-S6500d) CM10.1 Custom Kernel

Hello!
I've been having a lot of trouble flashing recovery, rooting and installing custom rom for my Mini 2. After a lot of researching and trying I have successfully rooted and after installed Cyanogenmod 10.1 and now I got the JellyBean 4.2.2. And now I would like to find out whether or not I should upgrade/change the kernel. Can anyone tell me please if there is another kernel for CM10.1 and for my device specifically, and will it make my phone more faster or not. I have tried to install Semaphor (I don't think this is compatible with my device), Devil (Same here) and Franco (Which is same) for all three of them I have got the status 7 error. I have also tried to install some kind of kernel update for my device which completely messed up everything (different colored display, some glitchy stuff and random reboot every 0.5 seconds ), so I had to install the stock rom (because the cm didn't work) and then the cm.10.1 again (now I'm good). Also to let you know my current kernel version is 2.6.38.6-1214151 (that's what says settings -> about phone -> kernel version). If there is nothing better then don't worry, my phone at the moment runs smoothly anyways!!!
Thanks in advance.....
Please...
Anyone???
I had that error on cwm 6.xxx
Then i flashed cwm 5.0.2.8 and there was no error, it worked
Just wipe everything and go to mounts and storage->format /system and after that mount /system
Make sure you have backup of your working rom. If your device wont boot after flashing (if its just booting in recovery, flash stock rom
(get into downlad mode voldown+home+power, hold power button until samsung logo.)
If thats what you have problem with...
No, don't install something that won't work for your phone. Kernel are main controllers in your phone. You change the kernel, you change how your phone works. If you lucky, you get your phone booting, but with glitch everywhere. If you aren't lucky your phone will dead, no matter if you install a custom ROM, or a fresh stock ROM.

I appreciate the reply, so as far as I understand, Kernel is completely separated from the ROM. So if I get any error or problem with the Kernel, it's going to be hard to fix, because re-flashing the ROM will not change anything. If what you said is right then I will not risk it, because my phone has got already CM10.1 installed and is working nice and smoothly, however I got another question. I'm not sure what Kernel version I had previously but when I installed CM I think it changed the Kernel, because the name of it is not the same as I've seen when I had stock ROM (It says 2.6.38.6-1214151 [email protected]#1 Sat Mar 23 11:49:35 EET 2013). I am really happy with what I've got at the moment so I will not change it, because if my phone ends up bricking, or anything else, I can't afford to buy another one for now (sometime later yeah )
Anyways thanks for your help!!
