That is for a vibrant, the model number for the captivate is I896(Canada) I897(America)
At this point you need to get into download mode and flash a stock firmware with either Odin or heimdall.

should be possible, you need to find the oldest possible stock rom and try flashing it with AiresVE.ops , MultiLoader Odin v.4.43
This happened to me, someone flashed cm for i9000 on i9001 and it worked for a while but it progressively started crashing, i took that phone and tried flashing stock but never could get pass setup connection in odin 4.43, tried all the variations (driver reinstall, new cable, remove battery, other PC etc) and in a hail marry attempt i managed to flash i9000 stock witch odin 1.83. Phone now works, enters download and recovery mode, but i still cant get past same error in odin 4.43 or flash custom recovery i any way (verification error from update method, adb flash just doesnt stick). ROM manager sees some custom recoveries but i cant enter them, my guess is because of different pit file from i9000.
Havent tried flashing i9001 rom with odin 1.83 because i cant use ariesve.obs from 4.43, i managed to connect to phone with heimdall and download pit, so that kind of connection works. My guess is that if i could somehow create pit file for this phone that works with heimdal i could flash proper stock rom, so im here to ask is it possible and how would i do it ?

If so, Download GB firmware for ODIN and flash it.
I believe you flashed the wrong kernel.

When you downloaded the clockwork mode recovery file you should have flashed via Odin v4.38 and not trough stock recovery cos that might end up soft/hard brick your phone try to follow the tutorial from af(android forums) on how to unbrick your phone it might help

Try to follow that tutorial that i've been talking about the one on (andorid forums) (it help'd me allot)although i'm not quite sure that it will help you very much cos that tutorial is for SGM s5570 but try it if it help's i would recommend before flashing clock work mod for your device (via Odin) not trough stock recovery, cos mine got stuck at boot logo the same as you i try'ed to flash cwm trough stock recovery and my device bootloop'ed so try to update your phone with latest version of gingerbread and then start to flash cwm on your device if the unbrick tutorial from af help's

i opened an update rar file instead of a tar (should have noticed) and ran odin it failed and now i cant,
get my gt I9000 to boot into service mode or start up.

i did backup using titanium and saved the entire contents of my phone to my pc can i restore my phone from that, via the Pc?

Update
Hi just a quick update
i reinstalled windows 7 on a old harddrive and managed to install heimdall & oneclick unbrick installed on that
in the cmd box it says
Error: Null
Set Temporary Folder:C:\Users\xai\AppData\Local\Temp\\xaiHeimdallOneClick\
Log:C:\Users\xai\AppData\Local\Temp\\xaiHeimdallOneClick\log.txt
Operating System: Windows
Found Heimdall Version: Heimdall v1.0.2b
Is the Null Error a problem?
the oneclick unbrick window says
Set Temporary Folder:C:\Users\xai\AppData\Local\Temp\\xaiHeimdallOneClick\
Log:C:\Users\xai\AppData\Local\Temp\\xaiHeimdallOneClick\log.txt
Operating System: Windows
Found Heimdall Version: Heimdall v1.0.2b
Ive installed the samsung drivers Pc installed compensate device and mass storage or something.
Im on an old pc with crap internet connection which keeps disconnecting every few mins, and it makes trying to view threads very difficult, am trying to find some threads i was looking in at the time of posting my op
is it safe to go ahead with the unbricking?
some advice at this point would be greatly appreciated
Thank's :

theres a few conflicting guides on how and what to do and a few of the guide take me to links that want to install stuff on my pc etc which i dont trust.
some links say it will work as i decribed there others say you need a stock recovery file or an e2 recovery file for the Froyo.
im lost with how to proceed, can anyone help or link me to the files i need please?
Thank's Xai
E2 is totally outdated thing, why would you need that?
What is your point, what do you desire to install?

Hello Tetakpataki hope your good & thank's for your reply :good:
i was trying to apply the lag fix but it wouldn't install cos i was in recovery E3 and kept geting the "E Signature" failed error
Ive since flashed my phone with "speedmod-kernel-k13c-500hz.tar" and can now access E2 recovery but I'm now stuck in clockworkmod recovery v2.5.1.0 speedMod ULFK.
When i flashed it it auto check repartition i didn't notice till it was too late.
Every time i try to start the phone it goes to "clockworkmod recovery v2.5.1.0 speedMod ULFK" screen and i cant get out it, i can still get into download mode, but the phone wont boot up normaly
Ive flashed with bootloader "i9000 boot.tar.md5" but that didn't work i change the extension to "i9000 boot.tar" it flashed but i still goto recovery.
Ive read through a lot of threads and guides a lot of the links to files i apparently need are down
I'm at a total loss as what i can do now? i cant find the froyo stock rom or the bootloader either (international version) can someone help me out please?

I finally got it fixed
Hello
I finally found a copy of the I9000XXJPO firmware (the other night) and flashed my phone with it.
the phone was getting stuck on the S slash screen.
But to fix that i flashed it with I9000 dbdata.rfs file (as i had a few E fail errors showing in recovery mode too) and it booted up fine after that.
I'm all up and running again
A Huge Thank's...
To All The Folk & developers, who spend a lot of time on the software, & contributed the guides and files to the forum
