I'm fustrated with N1's touchscreen, it is sometimes a pain to use. Most of the time it works just fine, on other times, either touch input is not registering or the X/Y coordinates is off! Playing touch intensive games sometimes "hang" the touchscreen. Turning off the screen and back on always fix the problem.
Is it possible to replace the touch screen sensor with from a recent phone of the same screen size? E.g. desire S?
It's impossible, because a different touchscreen requires a different drivers
look into the desire forum i hear the two phones have very simular hardware.or buy the latest model nexus1 touchscreen. my n1 was brought new recently and the only problem i recieve is multi touch with games at times.

i did look into that, HTC Desire uses the same crappy clearpad 2000 touchscreen.
The only solution is a new phone, nothing you can do about it.
Well, if I'm not mistaken, you should be able to buy the new Super LCD in the Nexus One after Google stopped selling them. I'm not sure how to obtain one, but I bet you could easily modify your N1 with the screen of the newer N1. Or hell, just buy the new Nexus One altogether, and you'll be okay. Though I don't know how well it works (Or if it works at all) in the US.
Panel != Digitizer
SLCD and AMOLED both have faulty digitzers so the problems are the same for both.

I've seed third party digitizer parts for nexus one on the net, are these any better? Would love to hear from people who had replaced their digitizer.

I think that doesn't make any difference, both the SLCD and AMOLED screen uses the same clearpad 2000 digitizers
I can confirm that the SLCD doesn't do sh!t to fix the digitizer problem. I have an SLCD model and have to fight frequent urges to destroy the phone against a hard object.
Previously I had an Incredible, but recently switched to the N1 because it was cheap and easy to obtain them fully unlocked and I'll be spending the next couple of years on the road in GSM countries. The Incredible's keyboard was not even comparable to the N1 keyboard -- though with Sense ROMs it had its own share of annoying issues.
Ironically, it seems that the N1 keyboard runs OK if using HTC software for it (search for HTC_IME), particularly when compared to the native keyboard in Gingerbread. On the Incredible side of things, it was the opposite -- ran like butt on Sense ROMs, but very smoothly on AOSP Gingerbread. Go figure.
With the variety of device manufacturers out there using different hardware components, a big part of me wishes that Google recreated Android as a display manager sitting atop a standard Linux install. That way we could just drop into a shell, mess with some driver source code, and watch it fail miserably when we tried to compile it.

Hey Guys!
I'm very confused with which phone to pick. Desire has better speaker and it seems not many problems compared to Nexus One however i like the looks of Nexus One a lot better since it reminds me of my old iPhone 1G. I have been using an iPhone from last 3 years almost and want to switch.
Both these phones are available in the grey market and will carry very limited warranty. Desire is cheaper by almost 100$.
So for those who have picked a Nexus One, would you switch to HTC Desire if a choice was given?
Some of the problems with Nexus One that I seem to have found out :
1) Touch Sensitive buttons
2) Loudspeaker is not too loud due to bad placement of speaker and the voice is distorted?
3) Issues with the screen where the phone becomes unresponsive and one needs to restart the phone.
4) Screen burn in of Notification bar.
I personally really like the Google branding at the back
Please help me out with your opinion.
Thx
I went from a iPhone 3GS to a Nexus One and I won't ever look back. Also in my opinion the Nexus One is a whole lot better then the Desire in terms of design and also the fact that Google's updates are released 1st on it and the XDA community is so big on the Nexus that literally everyday you can find something new.
In summary, my advise is go with the Nexus.
Yeah! I was hoping Sense UI would be released soon for it through a rom, good updates are available, lets hope a proper one is released with not that many bugs
Issues number 3 & 4 are the same on both phones. Both phones use the same touchscreen and OLED components.
Issue 1:
There is nothing wrong with the touch sensitive buttons. I've never had any troubles with them, they take a little getting used to as they are different then regular pressure buttons. Plus you get a small haptic feedback vibrate when one is pressed so after a while you never notice that they are any different then regular pressure buttons.
Issue 2:
The loudspeaker is about as loud as an iphone, however it is on the back of the phone and if you are looking at the screen it can sound lower because it is not facing any longer.
Issue 3:
Never happened to me. But tech in general sometimes freeze and restart nothing that would be different from nexus one vs the desire.
Issue 4:
Totally abnormal, this can only happen if you NEVER let your screen go to black when it is not is use. To my knowledge the recent post on this problem is the ONLY time i have ever heard this complaint.
Now as to which one to chose that is harder to explain. The are both fonominal phones, not just because they are android, but because they are mildly the same phone bundled differently. I personally would ALWAYS go with the Google branded phones because google tends to favor them, giving them first rights to new updates like froyo, and flash. I personally don't like the way the desire looks with the physical buttons but thats personal.

Except the Desire uses a black notification bar by default, so the burn-in would be greatly reduced.

unless ofcourse if youre using the desire rom
I chose the nexus one over the htc desire. I owned the desire for about 2 weeks and that i wanted a phone with faster browser speeds cause all i do is browse the web and watch youtube videos. long story short, i sold the desire, then picked up the nexus and rooted it the desire rom. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS! HTC DESIRE WITH NEXUS 3G SPEEDS.
I just went through all this, to me the desire is the nicer phone, and sense is an improvement on an already good UI. But the prospect of a 2.2 update swayed me to buy the nexus. The touch button issue isnt a big deal, you get used to them and touching the top half.
The nexus tracker ball isnt as ugly as i thought it would be, it much smaller than the one on my magic. If HTC didn't already have a bad history of updating the android version on their sense phones i'd have def gone for the desire.
BTW people always say you can use custom roms, i used loads on my magic and they were always unstable in some way and in the end I went back to standard.

You are forgetting the the Nexus has a whole lot more support from the community in terms of development which is why I have yet to try a unstable ROM...

Noise cancellation for the win
-------------------------------------
Swypin' on my Nexus
I am not a fan of Sense UI, and love vanilla Android.
With Froyo, I'm sure they have fixed the dodgy screen calibration too, as the capacitive buttons now respond when pressed in the "proper" place, as opposed to half a centimetre higher above the icon, which was the case before.
If you're not bothered by Sense, like the idea of having an FM radio, and are not interested in having the latest release of Android before everyone else, or custom ROMs, then I'd say go for the Desire.
Otherwise, Nexus all the way.
1. Touch sensitive buttons are much better responsive on Froyo but still not perfect.
2. The speakers are fine. Noise cancellation is great. The inbuilt speaker on the back is pretty **** tho'.
3 & 4 as mentioned. Both model will suffer from this.
Want Desire ROM.. Paul got it.

I've never come across an unstable rom for the Nexus.
From what I hear, people are also bricking their Desires when trying to unlock and root them. The Nexus One has built in support for unlocking, so no brick possibility at all unless you flash the wrong radio or interrupt the radio flash.
And you might only flash a radio every 6 months or so, if that much.
If there's a way to remove sense ui completely then I might consider the desire.
i like the sense ui and plan to run it. Which is the most stable version? Afaik, the recent roms are having issues with long text messages and other things.
The only thing that will make your decision is if you want Sense UI or not. That's something you can't use other peoples opinions about because some people hate it (me) and some people love it. I'd say use Sense UI and use a stock Android ROM and see which one you want. Also look at the pros and cons of each and see what features you want the most.

I'd say if you like Sense UI get the Desire. That's what its there for. Personally I love stock UI
Nexus One = Froyo, will have to wait months to get it on Desire, and the same will happen when Gingerbread comes and every OS after that so pretty much there is no way I would ever take a Desire over the Nexus One considering they are essentially the same phone. I am considering swapping my Nexus for an EVO though LOL Will be hard to give up Froyo but that 4.3" screen is amazing.
I'm thinking between the My Touch Slide, and the Nexus. Obviously I love my g1's keyboard.
But, I know the MTS running Sense will never be up to date on current Android OS (though I read they're limiting updates to 2x a year which helps) So I would want to ask if you'd think any hackers would strip it of it's Sense UI and run normal android on it?
And if not the MTS it's a Nexus one and while playing Yongz emu's with multi touch which handle surprisingly really well, I've thinking an all touch phone might do just fine.
Thoughts?
It's happened with just about every other Android device, so I don't see why it wouldn't with the MTS.
However, you may want to consider holding out for more info on the HTC Vision, supposedly a Desire with a keyboard.

And a "Desire" is basically a GN1 with an optical trackdot.... so expect the Vision to be the best of both.
One thing to realize though, is that even the GN1 is still an HTC PHONE, and is still going to be subject to the same support/upgrade life as every other HTC PHONE.
Android is such a pain in the ass
Hm, I guess it doesn't matter all too much. I just read the My Touch Slide is scoring high GPU benchmarks then any other Android out there (though probably because it has less pixels to push around so it's easier, but still)
I guess it will be an ok buy, hope so!
After 2.5 years with my trusty Vogue, I dropped it yesterday and cracked the LCD screen inside. The phone still works and I can sort of see what's going on on the right side of the screen, so I'm convinced nothing else is broken (including touchscreen capabilities). So, I ordered a new LCD replacement online and will try a little DIY repair when it arrives.
Right now, I have a Froyo build flashed to NAND on this phone. I remember way back in the cupcake/donut days, we used to have to set the panel to type 1, 2, or 3 in default.txt based on the manufacturer of the LCD screen in each particular Vogue. Since this is a replacement screen from an unknown manufacturer, am I going to have to worry about my panel type when it comes to booting Froyo? Is panel type taken care of automatically these days on Vogue?
Yes panel type is automatic for Vogue.
Thanks! After I placed the order for the replacement screen, I started to worry that I was going to have to set the type and that I had just lucked out in the past with the default on my phone. Since I can't see anything, I'm not really in a position to change any settings at this point.
Fingers crossed that my replacement works out. If I can't resurrect this phone, Sprint's offerings aren't particularly impressing me...

the LG optimus is prolly the best i can see at the moment other than the epic and evo, the optimus has the same gpu as the nexus one and an 800mhz processor, only short coming is that it doesnt have notification LED's i thought we moved passed that stuff years ago
Yeah, the Optimus and the Shift are the only two I really have my eye on right now in case my Vogue really dies for good. The Evo and Epic would be nice, but as 6+ month old phones, I'm hoping to limp along until the next generation of phones comes out. With Sprint's announcement about the mandatory premium data fee for 3G phones today, perhaps locking in with the Optimus for another 2 year contract before the pricing kicks in is a good idea...
I played with the shift today the keyboard slid really hard and the volume buttons are on the wrong side

Yuck, I wasn't terribly jazzed about the Shift in the first place, and hearing that just confirms I probably shouldn't go that route. I got my shipping notice about my new screen today, so hopefully I'll have my Vogue back to life by the weekend. I'm terrified that this thing is going to end up being panel type 4, which is to say, something that doesn't exist in the current kernel.
I have the LG Optimus S and it is quite nice!
Very responsive touch screen compared to the vogues screen.
Speed is really good, and there are already 2 replacement roms you can use.
Z4Root does the rooting automatically for you, no need to do a hard hack.
Tweaked kernels exist to allow the device to be overclocked.
Supposedly handles upto 32GB MicroSDHC cards.
Running a 16GB class 6 card in there now, it runs very smooth.
Battery life is quite good.
And - best thing, it was free, just had to renew for 2 years, which I was going to do anyway.
Update! My Vogue lives to see another day. My replacement screen came in the mail and is now working. I can confirm that panel type was not an issue, as Android fired right up and displayed correctly. Thanks to all for your answers and suggestions---my Vogue will not live forever, and I will probably have to pick up a new phone at some point.
Interesting outcomes from the screen replacement:
1) The new screen is much dimmer than my original. I think the backlight is less powerful. Of the three brightness settings on the power control widget, the new screen on high is comparable to the old one on medium. Also, the color gamut seems to be a little different than my old one. It's not problematic or anything, just noticeable after staring at that screen for the past 2.5+ years.
2) The pitch of the vibration has changed--it is a lower frequency now. Also not a problem, but a noticable difference. There was a little box on the circuit board in the lower left corner that was wearing a little rubber hat that fell off during disassembly. I put it back on, but I suspect that reseating the hat must have changed how it vibrates a bit.
Hey guys!
I'm looking at getting myself a secondary Android device to accompany my Galaxy S i9000. (I use my phone a lot, and it's quite difficult to rely on a single phone that has quite poor battery life.)
Put simply, I'm wondering whether you would recommend a Nexus One as a good 'secondary' device, or whether I should consider the Nexus S. From friends, I've heard that the N1 has much better build quality, and there isn't anything particularly inside the Nexus S that jumps out at me as a must have feature.
Anyway, I'll leave this with you.. you haven't got to answer me, of course.
Lewis
I haven't had a hands on with the NS but I love the build quality of the N1. Beyond the multi touch issues I'd highly recommend it as a second phone, if not your primary one
I've owned them both. Get a N1. With a NS, you will not be able to install your SD card from your galaxy (it uses internal flash only). The N1 is a metal unibody design with soft-touch plastic covers, while the NS is too 'plasticy' (IMHO).
Also, I am sure the prices of used Nexus Ones are less that that of used Nexus S. You can probably pick a used N1 up with accessories (including the docks) for cheap.
How bad exactly are these multitouch issues I've heard about? Do they affect daily pinch zooming of webpages etc?
Price isn't an issue: I'll be getting it on Vodafone UK - my aunt is due an upgrade, and she doesn't want a new phone at all - she's still happy with a 2006 Nokia!!
I understand that I can unlock it pretty easily and remove the Vodafone software?
It's looking more and more likely that I'll get the Nexus One!

Nope, pinch zoom isn't affected at all, at least not in my experience. It only occurs when two fingers pass each other either horizontally or vertically E.g. putting one finger in the bottom right hand corner and one in the top left then moving them to the top and bottom respectively, at the point they pass each other the axis swap. Fortunately this is a rare gesture, even in games and one I haven't had a real problem with in over a year.

If you want to keep the warranty you can root the phone without unlocking the bootloader but if you wish to you simply need to issue 'fastboot oem unlock' in the bootloader and you can flash whatever you'd like
Long story short..
Have a T-mo HD2 with android, overall satisfied other than lack of a keyboard. Last week, leaving work, someone's unattended child bumped my arm and knocked my phone out of my had. Making it fall on to the asphault screen first, cracking the screen. Overall, still functions and thankfully I had a screen protector on it.
Right now I am using my backup TytnII.
I have insurance on the phone, have started the claim but they want 130$ and since the HD2 is no longer in production the phoned they are offering is a T-mo HD7.
SO my question is it worth it? for the phone? Resale, and get something else? What is the phone worth if I choose to sell it? Any/all constructive input appreciated. Thanks.
Fix your HD2 or get them to buy you a refurbished one HD7 is not worth it, made move from HD2 to 7 and regretted it since. HD2 can run WP7 if you want.

I'm thinking the HD2 with android would compare to the desire...
As for HD2 being better than HD7, no way... I had WP7 on HD2 and most was fine but web browsing was tedious with no proper screen drivers... The HD7 is much better than HD2 the HD2 overheated a lot, the HD7 never overheats... And the HD2 got a distorted part of the screen, I imagine from the overheating...
If you don't like WP7 the get the HD7 and sell it for a desire...

The HD2 with WM6.5 Pro was decent. HD2 with android was very decent. Was my first non-physical keyboard phone, mostly because it was cheap. Thought about trying out WP7 on the HD2, but do not have as much time as I used to anymore.
The idea of getting the phone and selling it sounds like a good idea.
I have bids on a few phones on ebay right now, have some time left so not holding my breath.
If I can get something more towards what I really do want then I will figure out what to do with the HD2, whether be selling it, using til it breaks, or attempting to fix it myself.
Have only used one, but as far as devices out now, the G2 seems to be the best suited for what I want. I am not set on Android, but physical keyboard and 4g speeds not sure there is anything better for the time being.
If you want WP7 get the HD7 (bad battery life though ) or even better get the Nokia Lumia
Otherwise Just stick with your HD2 as I have seen it got ported with Android Icecream Sandwich
If you don't dual-boot your HD2 then go with the HD7. Pick up the 1350mah Anker battery and the battery life problem will be solved. WP7 on the HD7 is great. The phone feels quality too.
If you run android on the HD2, I would still get the HD7 and either sell or trade it.
Sorry my HD2 never overheated, did not have dostorted screen as well. It was perfect much better built then HD7. HD2 felt like a solid brick and it proved itself as such. The same usage of HD7 over barely a year (had HD2 for 2 years) makes is squick, screen moves in corners, headphone socket is loose and ready to go, power button is collapsing and using that touch screen in light rain proves almost impossible unlike on HD2. BTW my HD2 was also through that time a GPS on a motorcycle so if it was raining it was operating in extreme moisture. HD7 goes crazy in same conditions and everything clicks on screen, you dim the screen and it comes on, music stops and starts many problems. Today in light rain I could not listen to music as screen was coming on and slightly moist pocket was making everything click.
Also HD2 is identical to HD7 in spec in more then 90%. Same CPU, US HD2 had more memory, same GPU, same screen size and I actually believe same screen.
Seen WP7 running on HD2 and did not see almost any performance differences. The one's that were there were mostly due to very slow SD card used in HD2.
I live in UK and had screen fixed in one of the shops on Tottenham Court Road.

The HD2 build is definitely better, but I'd prefer an HD7 since it's actually made to run WP7.
Dual booting is neat, but I'd rather have a device that runs one OS very well than two with serious problems. I love the HD2, but I'd never consider it reliable enough to be a daily driver.

For me HD7 was a mistake, build quality is bad, it adds nothing over HD2 and I for one will be happy to pass it on O am afraid it will be 50GBP at best.
Next for me is Titan or move to Android as all WP7 phones feels cheap.
Seems like part of MS requirement hehe

I've had my HD7 for the same amount of time as I did my HD2 and the HD7 is flawless... The HD2 in the same time showed many more scars and screen problems...
As for back cover, I quite like the flimsy plastic for a couple of reason... Getting it on and off is simple and replacing it is under $10 on ebay...
As for the HD7 adding nothing to the HD2... Well, a pinch to zoom that works properly and the kickstand were the winners for me...
OP should take an HD7 for a spin... Our opinions are opinionated...

I just got the HD7 recently from my organization, I am using it over my SGS 2. Probably because it's fresh, but I like the system in general, although I deplore lack of some standard apps I use in Android. I don't feel the need to tweak that, change this, flash here and there. In terms of hardware and built, it does not compary to SGS2, but it's a good phone as far as the system and usability goes.
